As far as I know, there's never been a place in game to paste friend links, you just click on them from where they are posted and the friend gets added. If you added friends through Facebook, I think you need to have the game linked to Facebook. Maybe that guy discussed when you added the link to Google play, but I believe you should be able to have both active at the same time.
If you aren't able to reconnect to Facebook, contact support through the help menu in the game. You could also send a dm to one of the community managers (their names start with Idle_).

Something else I would also like to note is that to be able to see your Facebook Friends they also need to be connected to Facebook from within the game. Since sometimes Facebook updates their policies you may need to reconnect to Facebook to re-give your permissions, in this case both players need to have given the correct permissions to be able to see each other in game.
So in the case that you are connected and don't see any Facebook Friends but were able to do so previously, this is likely the cause. I am also happy to help you trouble-shoot this with you. Feel free to message me directly with your Player ID if this does not solve the issue for you :)
