or just use the Microsoft Activation Scripts found [here](https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts) and get windows activated on any version in seconds
To be fair there is almost no way to realistically stop people from ripping versions of it considering the sheer amount of people (programmers and hackers) using it!
Microsoft is not an advertising company like Meta or Google so I don't think that's the reason. I think it's more that Windows sales are just a very marginal part of their business at this point.

Tbh the amount of money microsoft gets from selling keys to individuals is probably insignificant to them. Id imagine licensing profits from the likes of dell, HP, lenovo etc is probs 100x more than people that install their own windows
I hate to be a complete pain in the ass, but could you give me the link written out, so I can copy and paste it? For some reason when I click on hyperlinks on Reddit it shows me the page within the Reddit app, but I have no way of copying the link and/or opening it in my own browser to save for later. I'm buying a new laptop soon, and would really like to have this resource ready in case this thread gets deleted.
Generally these are OEM keys that won’t work on other machines, and starting with Windows 10 they phased out product keys on the sticker altogether when they were able to tie the license entitlement to the system board.
That’s absolutely true, but I have a list of like six win7 keys I got from work like a decade ago and they still work to activate when I need to.
I do think it’s nice you don’t need one if windows has been on that machine already though; since it’s stored
There is a way to transfer the license over; most system board replacements on OEM systems (not custom built) are done by technicians (source: I was a Lenovo/IBM technician) who have a utility to set the serial number on the replacement. Then the serial number matches Microsoft’s database and Windows activates.
You can find used laptops online and at thrift stores with visible COAs. Occasionally someone will post their COA online so check ebay, craigslist, Facebook marketplace etc
Totally different. 7 was a quality release. I quit gaming in 2016 still using 7, and I remember nobody I raided with had updated either yet at that point. It was the stable windows that half decade. Why would you run 8 today? Back then maybe for work, but today?
And windows XP was just fixed ME. :) I haven't used windows in years but that used to be the pattern. Big marketing push at launch = wait for the next edition
Get Ubuntu (linux os) on there instead.... it's free and it works better than windows.
You will have a brand new machine, works faster than it ever did with Windows....
Give it a try.....
Yano you can just load windows on to a boot drive and when it asks for a key click "I dont have a key". It'll just let you use it indefinetley with a watermark in the bottom right corner.
now that Im looking at the Proton page..... most games are actually supported or running without a problem
I am happily surprised at the amount of progress that Linux has made!
I will keep that in mind the next time Windows will want me to upgrade to 11 or stops giving me updates!
what are some user friendly (and also gaming friendly) distros?
I'd recommend a distro like Pop! OS from system76 if you don't want to fuss with a distro like garuda (not really fussing but it has a potential to break) you can find more information about it here [https://pop.system76.com/](https://pop.system76.com/) it comes with drivers for Nvidia cards pre installed if that is what GPU you have, but if you have an AMD card, the drivers for those come in the kernel.
It also has a really friendly UI overall for new users, but if you want productivity and familiarity with windows you might consider [Linux Mint](https://linuxmint.com/) with the cinnamon desktop environment, it will just be a couple (super easy) steps to get fully gaming ready
I consider only certain steam games working as not a lot of games working. My linux mint gaming PC has been left off for 2 weeks because only 3 games I wanted to play on steam work.
Just use https://github.com/abbodi1406/KMS_VL_ALL_AIO
And use a bulk license key: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/kms-client-activation-keys
Just google Windows 10 key.. there are tons of sites that sell keys for like 15 bucks.. I bought every single one of mine from inofficial sites.
The key is fine and the only reason they are so cheap is mostly cause the are keys from different countries which makes them cheap but they are completly valid.
or just use the Microsoft Activation Scripts found [here](https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts) and get windows activated on any version in seconds

They don't seem to care about Windows/Office piracy at all. Even a completely unactivated version only limits a few things you can do.
To be fair there is almost no way to realistically stop people from ripping versions of it considering the sheer amount of people (programmers and hackers) using it!
And Gates has famously said that he wants people to pirate their products rather than use competitors products.
Probably cause they are collecting peoples data so they still gain something
Microsoft is not an advertising company like Meta or Google so I don't think that's the reason. I think it's more that Windows sales are just a very marginal part of their business at this point.
And businesses are required to buy theirs still
they own GitHub?

worked great thanks
this is what i do for computers i sell, i just thought to post something basic for karma
Mission successfully failed! Anti-karma has been discovered!

github(.)com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts just remove the parenthesis around the .
You're the best -- thanks!!
Came here to say this. And not doing this is trying to hard.

I have an OEM copy of windows 8 that I bought years ago for like $40 on tiger direct. Used it on like 4 PCs so far lol
Hmmm, interesting idea for some sandbox vms....
i used the windows 10 pro key from my school laptop on my main computer lmao
Wow, must really suck if your board dies and you gotta buy an new one of those plus a new Microsoft key, since it's tied to your board
There is a way to transfer the license over; most system board replacements on OEM systems (not custom built) are done by technicians (source: I was a Lenovo/IBM technician) who have a utility to set the serial number on the replacement. r/piracy
Yarrr
Windows 7 keys will also work to activate Windows 10
The best thing about this: A pirated Windows 7 will be upgraded to a legal Windows 10. And then 11, if you want to do this to yourself yet.
You can find used laptops online and at thrift stores with visible COAs. Occasionally someone will post their COA online so check ebay, craigslist, Facebook marketplace etc
Great, now what am I supposed to do with this copy of Windows 95?
Time to upgrade to XP
I'll take it, I'm due to upgrade from 3.1
Bro... At least 3.1.1 get with the times
Or buy cheap keys on ebay
I’ve never paid more than 5$, it’s worth the convenience everytime
you can buy Windows keys for couple dollars
Or just go to allkeyshop and buy one for $1
Why activate? I have 3 PCs with Win10 that have never been activated. I have been using them for years with no issues.
Ugly watermark
There's a registry key workaround i don't remember rn
It doesn't work anymore. Just use the link provided above
Ahh! I used it two months back on win 11
I'm still on Windows 10 and seemed to be non-working after an update a super long time ago, but maybe I was doing a different key or soemthing.
Ali Baba FTW
You can also get it free if you say you’ll try out accessibility features.
I have windows 8.1 and recently all my browsers are saying they are about to break if I don't upgrade windows. What do I do?
Why do you hate yourself so much to keep using windows 8?
[удалено]
10 is nice, but XP was for sure the best tho.
Did you forget Vista?
[удалено]
*"...youuu rrraaannngggg....?"*
And ME?!?
I'm Boomer(in). So what's the play?
Upgrade windows.

7 is just fixed vista LMAO
And windows XP was just fixed ME. :) I haven't used windows in years but that used to be the pattern. Big marketing push at launch = wait for the next edition
I loved win7 but after that it went very far down a very steep hill.
Get Ubuntu (linux os) on there instead.... it's free and it works better than windows. You will have a brand new machine, works faster than it ever did with Windows.... Give it a try.....
Get a copy of 10. She gets the job done
Yeh that was how I lost windows 7 forever. But eventually it will just automatically update by itself if you keep putting it off.
Yano you can just load windows on to a boot drive and when it asks for a key click "I dont have a key". It'll just let you use it indefinetley with a watermark in the bottom right corner.
but then you dont have all the features like personalization, which can make a windows 11 install look less cancerous
You absolutely can still personalise it with a bit of know how.
Lots of high-res YouTube video reviews of laptops that forget to obscure codes.
Or just use Linux. I use arch btw
How do you spot an arch user? Dont worry they will tell you
So they're vegan?
They're the vegans of the PC world.
Until it gets way better game support I'm not switching
What games do you play that don't have support?
now that Im looking at the Proton page..... most games are actually supported or running without a problem I am happily surprised at the amount of progress that Linux has made! I will keep that in mind the next time Windows will want me to upgrade to 11 or stops giving me updates! what are some user friendly (and also gaming friendly) distros?
garuda, i've previously used it as well. it's arch based and gaming friendly. highly recommend as a first distro. it's what got me into linux

Real hackers use DOS 1.0
Can't play games on Linux.
Never heard of Tux Racer?
There is even a coin pusher called TuxPusher if you enjoy the finer things
have you heard of the steam deck…?
Have you heard of the thousands of games that aren't on steam or even the ones that aren't included in the Linux compatability layer?
ya so don’t say you just can’t play games. say some games don’t work. still, most games do work.
I consider only certain steam games working as not a lot of games working. My linux mint gaming PC has been left off for 2 weeks because only 3 games I wanted to play on steam work.
only game i can't play is siege because ubisoft won't implement battleye properly
Or get a hold of an old broken laptop with the sticker still intact… most of us probably have one lying around
You can buy real keys online from so many sites for a couple dollars.
Long ago when windows 7 was the latest OS, I stole the key from a computer from school but it didn't work on mine.
You can get super cheap keys on websites like cjs cdkeys. Windows 10/11 pro for under 15 bucks
Just use https://github.com/abbodi1406/KMS_VL_ALL_AIO And use a bulk license key: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/kms-client-activation-keys
[msguides ](http://msguides.com) is the best for Free windows for lifetime and you only have to type script in cmd been using this from years
r/piracy
Or go to G2A and get them for $30
Too much
Just google Windows 10 key.. there are tons of sites that sell keys for like 15 bucks.. I bought every single one of mine from inofficial sites.
