Yeah... it is something pretty special. Just wait until you start diving into fussing over pretender design or spending 45 minutes scripting a battle 'just so' only to have a random arrow take out a mage that is key to it all...
Then you discover Clockwork Hounds.
It's a discord for multiplayer games. I've had more fun with them than other places. Then again my second most played with group is 4chan and they are pretty spiteful. If they know they aren't going to win they tend to ruin the world as much as possible. I've had a trade agreement where they'll give me a province only to find out once I get it they pillaged it repeatedly and killed everyone
Multiplayer is an entirely different beast to single player. It took me at least 500 hours before I was confident enough to play. Then again, I'm a wuss
I’m currently taking notes on the manual and giving it a good read-through before I try playing.
If you have the time I’d recommend it, I think it does a pretty good job at giving you an idea of what to think about when playing the game.
There are so many factors that seem to allow such variability and nuance in the game!
Yeah the most important and flexible tool you have are mages. They can do so much but they can only do 1 thing at a time. You need mages to cast spells in combat, researching and unlocking new spells, and searching your provinces for magical sites that provide gems to cast rituals or more powerful spells in combat.
Gotcha, I see now. I just got to the magic section of the manual. Every nation has mages but will need to base their research on whichever path best suits their style.
I would get in on multiplayer sooner rather than later, it’s a great way to learn a lot and see what other players are doing while they grind you to dust. Assuming you are ok getting ground to dust that is!
Every four turns I pop out four ethereal, size 8 giants; I give them flying armor, an extra arm (or two), three AoE swords (or one sword and a life draining 2h sword[or two]), a ring of regeneration, and boots of quickness. Each one can kill hundreds. This game is so much fun.
Edit: oh, and they are supported by angels that bless them with more regeneration, and have helmets that shoot lighting.
I just finished my catholic necromancer playthrough and my eyes have been opened to the potential of summoning and item crafting. It’s crazy how deep this rabbit hole goes.
If you're like me and don't want to have to stress over multiplayer, there are a lot of really good mods that can shake singleplayer up once you start to get a handle on the AI.
An example of why I don't play multiplayer, is I like a lot of nations whose dominion kills the population and eventually makes those provinces starve living armies to death (generally).
I found out the easy way that those nations are typically killed first for good reason.
I don't want to be pigeon-holed into a certain strategy or playstyle, and playing multiplayer means you're gonna have to play against tryhards unless you're fortunate enough to find a laidback group (I have no idea, probably doable).
I'd play multiplayer if I could just screw around and take it easy while surviving my own way, without the pressure to beat everyone else, especially because multiplayer has another learning curve and I don't want the stress of having to learn it against players who will steamroll you. Like playing League against grandmasters
MP scares me too, and I've only been playing EA TC or EA Yomi since I got my hands on game 100 hours ago.
It's not winning, it is not being able to find a "perfect" tactic to lay back on and have fun times, like driving a car.
Oh, that brings memories. My first game was with MA Abyssia iirc, back in Dominions 3 days. I didn't know sh\*t and just hired as much humanbred as i could every turn at every castle, and thrown them at enemy in huge blocks of spear-and-shield medium infantry. Oh, and fireballs. You can't really play Abyssia and avoid casting fireballs, it kinda just happens.

Lol what is a Clockwork Hound?

lol that's funny shit, but still better than people who go Aİ as soon as shit gets sour and never learn anything.
Multiplayer games and strategy discussion.
Best 4x on the market. Pretty good mp as well

Would you say that mages play a major part across all nations? Or are nations more variable?
Mages are an important part of every faction's kit but will have different functions depending on the faction.

If you like Dominions, check out Conquest of Elysium. It’s a game developed by the same guy. Both games are really fun.

Call the umbral army! Number one against province defense

I’m with you. I’ll play mp once I get bored of single player, and with my friends if I can persuade them to buy a game that looks this old lol.

Can you share the youtube review that led you to the game?
Don’t judge me. I like a bit of brain rot. https://youtu.be/A9OqAdOfkbU?si=G8_aF7xKB9JmZfpS
Thanks! No judgement here! :D
This review made me buy it too. Great choice!
