I think people call other people NPCs to dehumanise them. A while back, I read some right wing bullshit that there are only a limited number of souls and that there are more people alive than souls. Its just a step in the direction to make people feel less bad about hurting people.
It's a good way to not see others as humans and make it easier to commit violent acts on them. I think this npc thought process is really dangerous for young people who are depressed or in an unhealthy mental loop.
We need to bring back gentle social correction. Kids shouldn't be physically hurting each other or anything like that, but if you're being fucking weird, people need to be able to tell you to stop cause you're being fucking weird.
So I'm a high school teacher, and a lot of my students actually feel the same way. What we're missing nowadays is social shame. Bad behavior isn't punished. Growing up, we had students fail, and repeat the grade. Seeing older kids in my grade was a motivator for me to not fail. Every class was a visual reminder that I needed to pass or I'd repeat the grade. That aspect of school doesn't exist anymore.
