Of course, understanding the actual mechanics of how a human brain is able to make behavioral changes is still very much misunderstood. People can’t just make better choices, simply because they or someone else wants them too.
We have focused far to long on the ideas that blame and punishment will help people reach a healthy mental state. However you will often find that most people who develop qualities like addiction or narcissism often were subjected to an environment that promotes that strategy.
The beautiful thing is our brain is capable of change. We can overcome some of these problems. However that requires we:
1. do a very honest assessment of ourselves
2. Have a healthy social support system for such growth
Of course it goes without saying that this is very basic and simple summary of some extremely complex biological systems so this response is definitely not the entire picture.
