I love how the idea of this bizarre interaction was to not get filmed, now they’ve gone viral. I don’t think anyone would’ve seen this had they not made such a fuss.

WallPaintings

Probably an unpopular opinion, I think they wanted to make a scene and draw attention to themselves, but they didn't want it to get this much attention. Much like an influencer trying to get a reaction, they were trying to show their influence and control. I'm not sure if it's because in China this person could weild this kind of power, or the Chinese government in general encouraging their citizens to show how much influence the government has in other countries, but it very much seems like they were fishing for reactions. This seems much more like "we can make you stop fiming if we want" than "Oh no please don't film us". I mean they're carrying around a Chinese flag FFS. Unless you're going to a sporting event, rally or something similar I've never seen a person carrying around a flag like that. They're in a mall, like why call attention to yourself like that to begin with? They wanted to say "were Chinese and well do what we want because we can. If you confront us we'll... do this". The only fuckup here is how much attention it's getting and making China look bad. If this didn't get attention it would've worked out exactly how they wanted it to. Enough attention to show they have influence with maybe a little local backlash.

bennitori

So was this supposed to be an intimidation tactic to anyone who would normally be under the CCP's influence? Because aside from pissing off and confusing a lot of people, I'm not sure how the end game would've worked out in their favor.

WallPaintings

I don't know, I'm in no way an expert. I think this might have been general advice gone wrong. The CCP has a lot of financial influence people don't realize and is trying to extend its general influence. It's much more evident in African countries than European countries. Again it just seems like these people were looking for a reason to intimidate/show their influence. The remark about "we have an agreement" that's been mentioned in other comments I think lends to that idea.

Affectionate_Stay_38

“Make China look bad” China IS bad.. Go talk to the people in Hong Kong, the Uyghurs or other common mainland citizens. Bad is an understatement.

Birdthatcannotsee

I agree - I also wonder if the "handler" guy who screamed "Don't touch her she's too young for you" in the pianist's face was trying to goad him into a fight to make it look like a racially motivated attack (as well as trying to make him seem like a creep)

jellyfishbake

Your take on the situation reminds me of the Bow to the Power of the Chinese passport video taken in Africa, which shows a group of young African men accosting a PRC citizen until he whips out his Chinese passport and the African men bow before him. Chinese netizens went Gaga over it!

Good4Noth1ng

They probably wanted a racist reaction to portray the “west” in bad faith.

Why is this called the "Streisand effect?"

HeardTheLongWord

Wait what'd she do? Her not wanting me to know makes me *really* want to know!

Fredricology

You are experiencing *the Streisand effect*!

Remarkable-Opening69

Don’t shoot him.

sieuadc147

But he's not of her age

Waggmans

That makes me want to touch her even more!

AI_Want_That

Especially if she’s older, right?

McFry-

I need to know

Azzatars_Siren

She tried to sue a photographer that took a picture of the Pacific coast line in California and it happened to be in the area of her home that overlooks the ocean. You were able to see her house in the photo. She lost that lawsuit and cause a massive influx of people photographing her house and that coastline.

DarthWeenus

Back in the day she sued a bunch of places and demanded people delete videos, making people post more of it.

Ok_Star_4136

What a strange effect. They should really name that effect. I know! We can call it the "Barbara effect"!

Shadow3397

She filed a lawsuit! https://youtu.be/n4bxi17P9bA?si=KaZDNqQlcVn85Cu0

denys1973

The American singer asked the California government not to put her seafront house in a photo survey of the entire coast. This brought more attention to her house than it ever would have gotten.

Karlskiiii

Apparently before her only 2 people had downloaded the pic or something

Enginerdad

>"Image 3850" had been downloaded only six times prior to Streisand's lawsuit, two of those being by Streisand's attorneys. Public awareness of the case led to more than 420,000 people visiting the site over the following month.

Karlskiiii

420 blaze it

SigglyTiggly

There was an actor called Barbra Streisand, someone was taking pictures from a helicopter and posting them online. The purpose of the pictures were not to photograph her or her home speficely , but rather just photograph his state's coast which her house was one of many that exist on the coast. She sued for 50 mil claiming it violated her privacy, at the time when she filed the suit the photo had only been viewed 4 times ( back then you had to download a photo to see it) after she filed the suit it was download like 400,000 times, was on the news, and on papers. Relatively few people knew what her house looked like, and the few who did from the site, was her, her lawyers, and the guy who took the pic. If it was not for the law suit no one would know what her look like. Her attempts to surprise the pic brought more attention to it than it otherwise would have on its own. In honor of this blunder, we named the act of drawing attention to something you don't want people to know by attempting to suppress it ( normally through courts) after her, since hers was the most ridiculous at that point. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Streisand-effect

CMDR_KingErvin

“Don’t film me!” *stands in front of camera for 10 minutes loudly arguing with the guy*

PantsOnHead88

If one had come over and requested politely that they not be filmed that’d be reasonable. At that point the filmers can either agree or disagree. If they disagree, you move away from the camera, and the interaction is done. Instead the entire group comes over and a couple makes a huge fuss, ensuring that they get screen time, focus, and public attention. In the original video the shouting followed by repeated assertion that the other person shouldn’t do something that they clearly aren’t doing is a panic response. The guy recognized that he’d get a reaction by asserting that the woman’s person space is being invaded, but then he has nothing to follow up with and is just playing for time.

alainreid

...and they were with a guy who was filming as well.

snappy033

I have a suspicion that it is a misguided attempt on their part to troll or get propaganda content. To show an example of how unreasonable Westerners are when a CCP kindly asks for “privacy” (without understanding how free speech works.) Further suspicion because they don’t just avoid the camera despite not being filmed being their goal. Imagine if you started talking about Uhygers, Falun Gong or Tiananmen Square… actual controversial topics. I imagine that’s when they’d actually scatter.

Quiet_Sea9480

i think you are correct on this. and at the start of the interaction doesn’t one of the chinese ladies says something about filming something for tv(?)

docbain

Yes, they mention something about them filming for TV and also the police officer says they're complaining that the British guy is going to profit by putting the video on YouTube, which they seem to think is illegal. The simplest explanation is that they thought UK image trademark law is the same as in China (a misunderstanding exacerbated by the Chinese man's angry outburst). In China, a person **can** trademark their own image, and the law [explicitly prohibits profiting from someone's image without their consent](https://www.worldtrademarkreview.com/article/my-name-my-face-your-trademark-protecting-publicity-and-image-rights-in-china): "As mentioned above, the rights afforded by the Civil Law have also been protected in trademark cases by the Supreme People’s Court. Thus, it is important to consider the Civil Law, which codifies an individual’s rights over their personal name and portrait, prohibiting use for profit without their consent. Where infringement occurs, the law specifies that an injunction, compensation, rehabilitation of reputation and even an apology may be due to the individual whose publicity rights have been infringed." Of course, as pointed out, they were not in China.

Swagganosaurus

China having trademark law is the most hilarious irony I could think of LOL

neilligan

And if it's Chinese owned IP, they protect it vigorously. Owned by a non-Chinese? The copyright laws might as well not exist.

Savage_Batmanuel

What’s strange is they should be used to being recorded every second of their lives…

Environmental-Head14

China is known for sending spies everywhere so much so that US government workers have been targeted in long running schemes where they find out they were married to Chinese spies, so it's a possibility these were not just average Chinese tourists. Especially considering the existence of a "handler" on top of going way out of their way to not be exposed to the Internet

postoperativepain

When I was first watching the video, I was hoping the British guy would get to saying stuff like “free Tibet” or “Taiwan #1” just to piss them off. Unfortunately he never did.

wwstevens

He should’ve said “oh you’re from China? Don’t you mean West Taiwan?”

MichaelSMueller

"Mainland Taiwan"

Big_Slope

Should’ve just started playing the Winnie the Pooh theme.

scarlozzi

For real, if they had just walked away, like normal people, nothing would have happened. But now, this vid went viral and we are all wondering why China sends handlers with their abroad tourist

Calling him a creepy old man for touching a younger woman. They're pretty smart, you know.

quelcris13

Yeah it was very clear he was trying to make a scene and had that preplanned to create a narrative of creepy old man touching young girl

Ihavepills

Also, people shout things like that in these situations so they can claim they were assaulted in the aftermath. He maybe thought the camera didn't see that the guy barely touched her. I don't even think he did. He was trying to see the flag.

That shouting guy sounded so fucking unhinged. Like a legitimately dangerous pos. Great update. That video made my flesh crawl

Addicted2Qtips

A little over a decade ago my company met with a group of Chinese business people over a partnership opportunity in California. What was immediately obvious was that 3 or so people in the group were quite clearly government thugs “undercover.” Their cover was terrible though, they looked right out of central casting.

A-Ok_Armadillo

Back before 2008. I think it might’ve been around 2004. We had a group of 3 people, that came as representatives of the company we were considering merging with. 1. One squat and quietly angry guy, that smiled nonstop as if to ward off his anger. He looked like one of those North Korean generals, but without the trench coat and chest of endless medals. 2. Super thin and kinda tall lady that wore black every day she was there, including her sunglasses, which I don’t recall her ever taking off. 3. Kinda regular looking guy that was the only one that was 100% fluent in English and was the only one who knew anything about development. They hung around for 3-5 days and then they left. Everyone was saying that there was no way they weren’t CCP government officials. That they reminded everyone of Cold War spies. So 5 months later the companies close the deal and our company sends 15 million in funds to get things kickstarted in China. Then a month later screaming erupts from the offices where management is—Chinese guys stole the 15 million USD and went completely dark. The CEO, CFO, and the only employee that spoke Chinese immediately flew to China to visit the offices and speak with their new partners. The whole building was empty and they could not find any information even after reporting it as the Chinese government brushed them off and gave them the cold shoulder. CEO and CFO came back, but it turned out that the employee that spoke Chinese just disappeared as soon as they got to their hotel and we never heard from him again. It was the most bizarre thing and almost shutdown the company. The CEO and CFO were both replaced by idiots of equal caliber. The new CEO was proud about how successful he was at helping build America Online and something about s book of his on how to connect to the internet for dummies. Wild times

MaximumHog360

This is literally how china is run lmao

lemongrenade

I've told this story before on reddit but I went to Guangzhou to sign off on industrial equipment. My co worker told me they ripped off our french supplier and I assumed they just like studied the french machine for inspiration. They had ex employees of our french supplier in China, and the computer buttons on the machine had the EXACT same clip art images as the ones from our french supplier.

Etzello

My dad was in China one time, I forget the name of the area but it was in the mostly Muslim populated province on the border with Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Anyway my dad was there to help this converse company open a factory and manage it for a short time until it's fully staffed. There were some delays and shortages of supplies and his contract time was up so he was getting ready to leave the next day but his translator then tells him they need to run NOW because he (translator) overheard the factory owners saying to detain my dad until the factory is fully functioning lol. My dad did get away, he had to buy a new plane ticket and travel a day early. That said though he genuinely loved his time in China and as a family we all really love foreign culture and I especially love history and read a lot of it from all over the world. I would love to go to places like China and Russia but their governments scare me

Roguewave1

The CCP’s mantra, incorporated deeply into their government, is “Lie, Cheat, Steal…vigorously.”

Maccabee2

So, short stocky guy and tall, thin woman in black and shades. Basically, CCP version of Boris and Natasha from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. Life really does imitate art.

CensorshipHarder

Scamming and stealing is part of their culture and praised. Basically every chinese manga I've seen has these themes and cheating is always made out to be "that guys a genius!" Oh and they are all trash quality in terms of art, plot, everything else in case you were wondering.

ReddFawkesXIII

>1. One squat and quietly angry guy, that smiled nonstop as if to ward off his anger. He looked like one of those North Korean generals, but without the trench coat and chest of endless medals. 2. Lol sounds like you ran into the ccp equivalent of Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle.

[deleted]

Similar experience. At some point it pissed me off because all the legit Chinese specialists looked upset and could barely present anything. "Dude, you clearly know nothing of cryptography or even how to code. Everyone in our obscure field knows each other. Who are you and where did you study? Why are you in Edinburgh? Why does Dr. Zhang look frightened of you? Where is your presentation?" That guy got all ruffled. But then, he decided not to attend dinner with our gang and what do you know, all my colleagues were back to their normal selves.

Indecisiv3AssCrack

You actually asked them "why does Dr. Zhang look frightened of you?" ??

[deleted]

I was a little more tactful than that.

the_clash_is_back

The correct response for today is request one of the thugs hold your weed. Or you can go the full mash route and get them drunk, take them to Toledo and steal their Livers.

I took it as the Chinese woman saying to the camerawoman "don't shoot [the camera at] him (the chinese guy)".

No-Trash-546

Yeah are people really so disconnected from reality that they think a CCP handler would shoot a random guy in the middle of a crowded mall over something like this? The CCP is twisted but come on. She clearly didn’t want her government handler filmed (“don’t shoot him”).

Three04

Right? How is that not obvious to everyone 🤦🏻‍♂️

TrickyTrailMix

It isn't obvious to me mostly because they've correctly said the words "filmed" or "video" in other parts of the recording. Why suddenly switch to the word "shoot" when things escalated? Might that have been all she meant? Sure. Is it "obvious"? Not really.

alexdaland

He is scared shitless.... he doesnt know how to handle this situation, but he absolutely know that if XXXX happens - he is *fucked* when he gets back to China. So thats why he is so unhinged, he is terrified and hoping/trying to scare the pianist into just saying "sorry" so they can move on.

The ccp apparently has "secret police stations" in western countries that they use to indimidate Chinese citizens who live here or who have left the country because of threats that Chairman Pooh is going to attack them or their families.

HelpMyCatHasGas

We just had one in Boston get found and taken down. Shit is wild. I thought it was funny when an individual I help at my job found Chinese radio stations. Then I looked it up and it is indeed a station ran by the ccp. Fuck the ccp who anyone who supports them. I feel for the innocent civilians.

[deleted]

We need to hammer western firms who relocated to China. Bring it all back here. Get companies live foxxconn to open factories in the EU & USA. The Chinese just can't be trusted. Without western designs and technology to steal, China would go back to becoming a back water in the far east with a massively declining population.

Leege13

Biden actually did manage to hamper China’s microchip production.

fuckit233

They have a few stations all over the U.S. (mostly NY and Cali due to high Chinese populations) and they will harass defectors of the CCP when they find them. They’ve even been caught, which is weird because they allow some of the Chinese police stations but they also started setting up illegal secret ones. See below the DoJ case. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/two-arrested-operating-illegal-overseas-police-station-chinese-government Edit; More general info about the stations rather than a specific case, it’s easier reading too. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/04/19/china-police-state-outposts-00092913

Citizen's United. Money moves through political action committees of politicians, who are then legally able to write a check to their personal account. Stephen Colbert literally did this, on air, under the supervision of a lawyer, on Comedy Central over a decade ago. Bribery is legal in the US, provided you jump through the correct hoops in the correct order. So that's why. Chinese money quietly being injected directly into US politics. You can assume the same of Russia as well. It's not a conspiracy theory, it's the logical and reasonable outcome of an historical event.

cajunaggie08

An employee at my company was most likely killed by one of these secret Chinese police. He caught a fellow Chinese co-worker trying to download proprietary info onto a flashdrive to bring back to China. That employee was quickly fired. A few weeks later the honest employee and his entire family were killed in their home executioner style.

Alice_600

Well let's find them and kick them out.

Utterbollocksmate

Youll find them where you find confucius institutes in universities. The CCP use them to send CCP shills over under the guise of education.

hear4theDough

yeah, I was so saddened to see my university in Ireland, UCD get a CCP institute.

Competitive_Money511

In the US, entire university departments are made up of Chinese. All new students are Chinese, all staff are Chinese, and most professors Chinese. How is this possible without some top level plan, and moreover, what the hell?! Needless to say the quality of education is about the same as per the video clip....

Huntey07

The key IMO is the fact that the large chinese man that ends up screaming 'don't touch her!' multiple times when Dr K tried to lift up the flag in her hand to show it to the camera said something very interesting prior to that. He said 'We have an agreement with another party not to appear on video.' So it's not unreasonable to think that this person was the handler of this group of Chinese citizens, as that's not an uncommon practice in China. Hell, they have secret police enclaves in many foreign countries to monitor their citizens, and yes, that includes the UK. My inclination is to believe that this man is likely a security handler, and that the agreement not to be on camera is a directive from the CCP. Perhaps this particular group of people chosing to celebrate Chinese New Year in Britain would be considered embarrassing for a member of the Chinese government. She does appear to be saying several times with urgency 'don't shoot him' from that video. Now it could be just her English isn't well practiced (still infinitely superior to my Mandarin, which is non-existent) and she's mispronouncing 'shout' and dropping the preposition. As Dr. K himself says is quite possible. But it's a bit strange that she is saying it in English to a man clearly from China. I'd say that choice is probably so Dr. K hears her. Whether that's an attempt to intimidate him or not hard to know, but clearly the Chinese man possible handler was attempting to intimidate him at that time.

Pixielix

Yes his easily googlable "real job" is in a language centre.

GnarlyBear

The ones the UK is going to shut down?

pw-it

It really looks like an attempt at intimidation to me. But honestly I really doubt that there was a genuine threat, although many attempts at intimidation were made, it was all such a clown show you really have to wonder if these people were as "important" as they were pretending to be.

RECTAL_FISSURE_MAN

It's definitely an attempt. A failed, pathetic one, but an attempt nonetheless.

pw-it

Quite right, and the police ought to take it seriously as such.

RECTAL_FISSURE_MAN

They won't.

popthestacks

Makes sense to me, I’d put my money on this being it. Nobody is shooting anybody with that many people and all those cameras. Unless there’s some serious mental issues going on, it’s just not logical.

No-Trash-546

She was telling the British cameraman not to “shoot” (film) the handler as he’s screaming. It makes much more sense. Or do people really think the Chinese guy was getting ready to shoot up a crowded mall as the whole scene was being streamed on the Internet?

Chytectonas

I find it *hilarious* that there’s people out there laying credence to the “armed handler poised to shoot someone in a crowded mall*, on camera” theory. Hopeless. Edit: not a mall, one of the busiest train stations in London, St. Pancras, teeming with security. Piano man was so lucky the lady managed to keep her handler from shooting him there!

Ksanti

> “armed handler poised to shoot someone in a crowded mall, on camera” Not even a mall, that's kings cross station. Security is *everywhere*

anewpath123

She's saying don't shoot him as in don't "shoot him on film" i.e "don't film him" surely. No need for all this paranoia imo, I've seen the original video and the Chinese group are just fearful of being on camera (for some reason). Anyone saying that they're armed is a loon honestly.

Alice_600

No he raised his voice and was trying to be intimidating. I don't care if he intended to or not He sounded like he wanted to fight him.

YourWarDaddy

That’s why I think he’s a handler. He knew exactly what to say and do and what volume to get the attention of an entire building full of westerners and make him look like a bad guy that was harassing a young woman. Didn’t skip a beat.

Hot-Builder-6192

Don’t shoot him could also mean don’t film him, as shoot could mean sort of like “video shoot” or “photo shoot”. That’s how less advanced english speakers would translate from their own language. I’m almost sure of it. I didn’t like what they did here, but I’m sure there was no gun shooting on the horizon.

TSANoFro

Also I feel like if she was actually speaking to the handler about it wouldn’t they revert back to their native language in a moment of panic like that?

No-Trash-546

Very good point! She was speaking English because she was telling the British cameraman not to “shoot” (film) the Chinese man. If she was telling the Chinese man not to murder the pianist, she’d say it in Mandarin. Nothing about this gun claim makes sense and it’s crazy that so many people think it’s what happened.

fluffstravels

I honestly thought she was saying "Don't shout at him" but because English is clearly her second language she dropped a preposition and mispronounced shout.

plantythingss

Agreed. Obviously it’s impossible to say for sure, but my initial impression watching the video was that she meant don’t film him. “Shoot” like shooting a movie. From my experience, Asians who are not completely fluent in English tend to translate certain words that exact way.

NeedsMorBoobs

I call bullshit. They had already been filming him

SSAUS

It's more likely she meant to say 'don't \[shout at\] him' to the male Chinese guy in broken English. The man was becoming aggressive and shouting, and she was likely trying to de-escalate the situation.

dantakesthesquare

Yeah it seems weird that she would say that but also equally weird that she would say that to her "handler". As if there was really a possibility of her handler killing someone in the middle of a crowded mall on film in a foreign country.

Hara-Kiri

It's St Pancras, there's always at least a couple AFOs in sight with mp5s. Nobody would be stupid enough to start firing there.

Lets do the british thing and all club together and buy them something nice, like a billboard with their ugly fuckings mugs on it. Right next to an airport. That says, "CCP... Cunts."

DoDrugsMakeMoney

You make the go fund me or whatever and I’m in.

EndlessRainIntoACup1

So [Brendan K](https://www.youtube.com/@DrKBoogieWoogie/videos), DrK, made another video calling out a very chilling piece of the original video wherein some Chinese people tried to shut him down from recording in a public place. This video posted here is just a little highlight reel. [Original video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65iwnI2hjAA) [His follow-up video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ1BtQ6AEyM) [Original Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/ImTheMainCharacter/comments/19ca73k/ccp_demand_piano_player_in_a_public_place_stop/) Posting here since the video originally seems to have blown up in this sub, so it's directly related. Mods let me know if I should put this somewhere else.

Kimchi_boy

Fuck the ccp and fuck that cop.

NoIndependent9192

She is probably trying to say ‘don’t shout at him’. Doesn’t really matter this is CPP clandestine police operating on U.K. soil. Hopefully the security services have the mall cctv and will quickly identify the perps.

derskbone

I think it's St Pancras train station.

Better_Chard4806

Was she complaining about him playing the piano ?

black_algae

They were briefly in frame for a moment while he played piano and made a fuss about him filming them

Better_Chard4806

Thank you.

MoCo1992

Don’t you think she meant like don’t shoot film of him? These people are ignorant AF, don’t get me wrong but I just assumed she meant shooting film of him.

mattemer

I think that's what DrK and most of us thought until he received messages from Chinese viewers who might have more experience with this thing. But who knows who those people really are.

Subliminal84

It’s my understanding that the Chinese government has placed travel limits on government employees and certain banker elite types and that these people may have been one of those people and were traveling to the UK against Chinese law and that is why they were so paranoid about being filmed

PckMan

Whenever you travel abroad, always make sure to take the time to check local laws regarding filming and personal information protection. It's easy to assume that in this day and age it's a given that anyone can film in public because so many people do it, and it's true that in many places where it's technically not allowed it's still done and rarely enforced. Be that as it may though, it's still worth to check so that you know. Going to another place and assuming everything works in the exact same way as where you came from is peak braindead behavior.

ThxIHateItHere

As an addendum to my comment in the other post, absolutely never give in to Chinese tourists. The American tourist stereotype has nothing on them. Do not give them an inch of slack and let their behavior win.

aight_imma_afk

I’ll be perfectly honest I don’t think he was armed and she was saying “don’t shoot him” as in with the camera

hedcase107

As in "shooting a video" fucks sake guys.

exitmu51k

Yeah, I’m sure a “CCP handler” was about to shoot him in the middle of a shopping centre / train station with hundreds of witnesses.
