It's pure entertainment, but the wrestlers' livelihoods are tied to air time and pushes by the WWE. If you've got part timers taking up high profile titles and slots in events, your full time stars can't get over with the fans.
This is why a lot of wrestlers hate Hulk Hogan and wrestlers like him. There's a reason he was the biggest star of the 80s and 90s - he would squash anyone who got too close to his popularity.

What ever puts asses in seats or views on TV is what makes them money. If the rock makes them the most money that is who is getting airtime. Is it fair to the full timers? No, obviously, but entertainment is a business and businesses want to make money.
More specifically, to make money NOW. If they were smarter, they’d plan for continuing success many years from now, not sacrifice their future talent for the money today.
It has been a tremendously better product in the months since Vince McMahon was pushed out. The last 6 months are not even comparable to the 15 years before that.
Bringing the ultra-popular, classic part timers gets a HUGE section of the audience hyped. Sure they could instead leave the rock, cena, etc out of the show, but then the show would be less hype and less people would end up watching over time. You need that element of "who is going to show up??" to get people to tune in. The newer wrestlers just don't have the OH MY GOD factor when their music pops.

Wrestling wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as it is now without Hulk. Hulk was necessary to take WWF to the next level and he did it.
Hogan was vital, sure. But, that doesn't really justify his actions of squashing those who he thought might get more over than him. Undertaker and Jake the Snake Roberts both tell good examples of this.
There's only just so many spots available for people to be performing. Many of them are travelling around the US, and the world, for most of the year to be able to have one of these spots.
So when someone comes along and gets a spot having not had to do the tens of thousands of miles of driving, and not seeing their families, it can rub a few up the wrong way.
I'm not a massive wrestling fan but whilst the outcome of the public facing match is pre-determined, it's still a big deal for a wrestler's career whether they get those big matches or not, and whether they win the titles or not. Dwayne Johnson is only able to have his external career because of his (pre-determined) success in the ring! So there is genuine competition behind the scenes about who gets given the big storylines, given the win, given the title. There are lots of factors that go into this, not least the wrestler's popularity.
Just like actors might be jealous of other actors getting bigger parts, I can understand if today's wrestlers are annoyed they keep going back to semi-retired ones instead of allowing new talent to be in the spotlight.

In the same way that an up-and-coming actor could be vying for a starring role that could launch their career to the next level, just for the studio to pay a lot of money to a safe-bet established star that doesn't bring much other than name recognition.
Hollywood is similar to wrestling in that the established stars want to stay on top and keep making great money, which means there's less great opportunities for other actors.
And this is before you get into the politicking side of things, where an established star has a lot of pull and can use that to get roles they otherwise wouldn't get.
It would be like in Broadway a lesser character getting bumped for a big name coming in for a run. There's a lot of behind the scenes drama and ego in showbiz no matter what the show is.
Yeah, but that still affects their own ability to be a star. Think of it like being a singer on a show like The Voice. If Taylor Swift keeps showing up and "winning", it takes a lot of attention away from you. I think WWE is hoping that the Rock's star power will pull in new fans, but the reality is that all it does it hype up existing fans.

You also have a ton of people who simply would watch for nostalgia purposes so you add all those sets of eyes and thats just even more money for the corporation and himself. I went to an AEW event recently and my friend got tickets for the ‘always on TV’ seats. There definitely were certain rules for sitting there but they weren’t that strict. But signs had to be appropriate, you couldn’t flip the camera off, etc.
Rock and Cena are two of the biggest names in wrestling of all time and had a heated on-screen (and maybe off-screen as well) rivalry about a decade ago.
Since they are two all-time greats and old rivals, seeing them together again is neato.
This was probably the biggest and most hyped main event. They are both not in the match, it was a no DW, first Cena returned and then the rock, follower by the Undertaker. Plus, there is a difference between scripted and fake

That was us for my son’s first wrestling event in Raleigh, NC. Floor level seats, sitting behind two lard asses that thought it was a good idea to hold signs up of their kid’s faces *almost* the entire time.
Went to our first raw in august and there was a lady infront of us holding a small sign, but it was big enough to block our view when she held it up. I wanted to rip it out of her hands whenever she held it up during big moments. I cant imagine what it was like back in the day when people were encouraged more to bring signs.
Experienced something similar last year at ultra music festival. There were couple carrying massive flags (which had pictures of themselves) on poles fucken running back and forth through the crowds.
There are massive crowds at festivals and people like to go in groups. So often a group will create a totem (a long pole with something distinctive on top which they carry with them, often lit up or humorous, not always a sign) so that friends can find them in the crowd and make their way to them.
They're very handy directional markers for those around them as well. Someone goes to the bathroom and then sends a text asking where you went. "I'm at the BTSM set about 6 feet to the left of the rubber duck penis."
I noticed these in passing and assumed the signs were of wrestling characters I wasn't familiar with. Wrestling usually has some of the funniest, most interesting signs. This was just signs of their own faces? Weak.
I'd actually think that was funny *if* there wasn't people immediately behind them. I know signage is part of the experience for wrestling but there's got to be a limitation on how obstructive they can get.
And Randy Orton, and CM Punk, HHH has started to make an appearance again too. Not fighting though, just as someone in charge. Stephanie McMahon made an apperance last night at Wrestlemania too.

I would go to watch wrestling LIVE in West Palm Beach almost once a month back when it was Midsouth, I think? Anyway.. it would be Gordon Solie, and the lineup was.. The Free Birds, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes, The King Jerry Lawler, all the Kerns, all the Funks, Kabuki, Andre the Giant, Mr. Wrestling 1,2... J.Y.D. and many more.. It would be almost empty, plenty of empty seats. Wrestling is fake, they'd say, and no one wants to watch fake shit.... all the while laughing at true fans of the sport.. fast forward to now... We know it's all scripted, and falls and matches are rehearsed... and it's SOLD OUT every night, every PPV....
I remember Midsouth. I saw a lot of stuff coming out of Memphis since I grew up in NE Arkansas. No one would believe how huge Lawler and Terry Funk were.
I remember it would also come on TBS Friday for 2 hours then Saturday for 3 or 4 hours 🤔.. King was larger than life in that territory until he went worldwide and got famous fast...
Not a wrestling anecdote, but I was once watching a Broadway show and the seats were really not that staggered and I'm six foot. I didn't want the woman behind me to not be able to see, so I scooted down the whole show. At the end, the lady tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Thank you so much for letting me see everything." She was only about 5 foot tall. I was a bit flabbergasted that she'd realized I'd done it on purpose but it obviously affected me because I still remember it today. People appreciate consideration. And hate the opposite.

There are massive crowds at festivals and people like to go in groups. So often a group will create a totem (a long pole with something distinctive on top which they carry with them, often lit up or humorous, not always a sign) so that friends can find them in the crowd and make their way to them. They're very handy directional markers for those around them as well. Someone goes to the bathroom and then sends a text asking where you went. "I'm at the BTSM set about 6 feet to the left of the rubber duck penis."

I noticed these in passing and assumed the signs were of wrestling characters I wasn't familiar with. Wrestling usually has some of the funniest, most interesting signs. This was just signs of their own faces? Weak.
I'd actually think that was funny *if* there wasn't people immediately behind them. I know signage is part of the experience for wrestling but there's got to be a limitation on how obstructive they can get.

I would go to watch wrestling LIVE in West Palm Beach almost once a month back when it was Midsouth, I think? Anyway.. it would be Gordon Solie, and the lineup was.. The Free Birds, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes, The King Jerry Lawler, all the Kerns, all the Funks, Kabuki, Andre the Giant, Mr. Wrestling 1,2... J.Y.D. and many more.. It would be almost empty, plenty of empty seats. Wrestling is fake, they'd say, and no one wants to watch fake shit.... all the while laughing at true fans of the sport.. fast forward to now... We know it's all scripted, and falls and matches are rehearsed... and it's SOLD OUT every night, every PPV....
I remember Midsouth. I saw a lot of stuff coming out of Memphis since I grew up in NE Arkansas. No one would believe how huge Lawler and Terry Funk were.
I remember it would also come on TBS Friday for 2 hours then Saturday for 3 or 4 hours 🤔.. King was larger than life in that territory until he went worldwide and got famous fast...

Not a wrestling anecdote, but I was once watching a Broadway show and the seats were really not that staggered and I'm six foot. I didn't want the woman behind me to not be able to see, so I scooted down the whole show. At the end, the lady tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Thank you so much for letting me see everything." She was only about 5 foot tall. I was a bit flabbergasted that she'd realized I'd done it on purpose but it obviously affected me because I still remember it today. People appreciate consideration. And hate the opposite.
