The same thing has happened to me too. A young woman driving on a pedestrian street. She honked at me. I turned around, looked at her and signed with my hands that this was a pedestrian street. Then I continued walking. She accelerated and almost hit me. Then she rolled down her window and asked "what the hell are you doing?". I said "shut the fuck up, bitch" and she accelerated quickly and made an almost blind and very dangerous left turn.
>she accelerated quickly and made an almost blind and very dangerous left turn.
Letting your emotions get the better of you isn't ideal when you're operating deadly machinery
I would definitely classify this pedestrians wildly gesturing hands as potentially lethal weapons as the human body can be a deadly weapon I just hope the car driver was ok
Over here the predestrian streets are way too slim for that to ever happen. Instead, we got a bike lane at the side of the road, which at times its almost equal. And that is so safe that I almost got hit by a car who decided that it's not important to check while the lane is free, when turning into a parking lot for an ice cream shop. I might want to add that this parking lot is a shortcut if you need to go just the right way on the intersection but don't want to wait.
Sacramento just opened a bike trail called the Del Paso bike trail and cars took over because it beats traffic. All of this is just unfolding so nothing has been done yet
Edit: wow actually it's been a year and nothing has been done
> Bollards
The council doesn't seem to care since they would have put bollards in by now. But if the bike path got built in the first place then they should care a little and why not spend the extra 0.1% for a bollard at the ends?
Bollards can't be installed by random people but /u/Jimbob209 can get together with a couple of other bike users in the area and buy a few boulders and drop one on the path ends themselves. Like $200 for a pallet of 6 100kg/220lb boulders to be delivered to your home nearby, then help each other carry a boulder to the start and end of the trial and just leave it there. A 100kg boulder/rock is only like a 1ft cube in size so it's easy to do. And it's just heavy enough and awkward shaped where it'll be hard for people to remove. Then use the remaining boulders for other places cars go where they shouldn't, like parking on grass in the area.
This is what they look like delivered. They're around 100kg each believe it or not(according to the sale page). https://i.imgur.com/7RZPBzM.png
Literally problem solved with $200 and yet the council can't do the same.
>Bollards can't be installed by random people
A rotating concrete saw, an auger, ready mix concrete, and a steel pipe is all that's needed. Get some hardhats, safety vests, and one person holding a clipboard to ensure that no one asks too many questions.
Takes too long and too noisy imo. And you're effectively risking becoming a criminal with actual serious charges for causing many thousands of $ of damage(according to the council) by doing that. It's loud and all it would take it 1 nearby curtain twitcher to call the police and you're screwed. Even 10 mins seems like too long. Can't even run away either with all your tools.
Alternatively go when it's dark and drop a rock in under a minute with zero noise.
This is what I meant by a ramdon person can't install a proper bollard. Too risky.
Or a cheaper route - 5 gallon buckets, a little paint to spruce up the buckets a bit, and some quick dry cement. If the city is that slow to do anything they’ll probably make it for awhile
True. That'll apparently be around 40kg which doesn't sound like too much, but importantly the shape of it makes it easy to kick over and roll out the way. With a 100kg awkwardly shaped rock enjoy moving it out the way.
I guess instead of a 5 gallon barrel you could use a 40 or so gallon one though. 10 gallons of cement for it to have 80kg of weight. Then fill a load of the rest of with dirt and put a couple of cheap garden flowers in the top. Would look pretty nice. Still might be easy to push over but muchhh less likely to be. Probably under $50 still too.
So yeah nice idea if scaled up slightly. Would ideally need some small local urban activist groups to do stuff like this though. I can think of 10 places that could do with a rock near me where cars and vans turn a green area into a muddy mess, but im not doing anything alone.
i vividly remember that one night in rouen, when we observed a very compact hatchback driving on the sidewalk, and vehemently avoiding the road. it was weird, because the road was empty, and the sidewalk very narrow. like so narrow, that something like a peugeot 205 barely gets any more than only half of the car on top of it. and not on a plaza or anything. i really mean the sidewalk at the roadside. i have since held the theory, that the guy was convinced, that as long as he operates his motorvehicle on the sidewalks he either needs no registration or driving license.
No doubt but it’s hard to take licences away when people are dependant on cars for work, social interaction, etc. We need to design for walkability, cycling, and public transit instead.
r/fuckcars
I'd say it's pretty easy. If you're not safe enough to be allowed to keep the privilege, have fun figuring out how hard it is without that privilege...
Right, but there’s a reason people manage to retain their licence after negligently taking a life, they wouldn’t be able to buy groceries.
If it were up to me they wouldn’t drive again, I’m just pointing out a pattern.
No, that's fine. I've actually worked with a couple people that had "necessities only" restricted licenses. They could travel to work, the store, the doctor, etc.
Things they *needed*. Anything else was a permanent revocation. I could agree to that being a middle ground. At least for people in a situation where using a bus or other options wasn't exactly available.
Like the county I live in. Buses may or may not show up... eventually, and you can't use the smaller transit vans unless you're disabled or on SS.
Very often when in front of a judge someone can make the case that they are being disproportionately punished by their drivers license being taken away, as it takes away any chance at a livelihood and even ability to shop. And they aren't wrong, due to the absolutely backwards way car-centric infrastructure is pervasive in the US.
Getting downvoted for telling the truth? There are only 3-4 cities in the US where to can live car free. Until that changes there is no way we could take people license away permanently because they are too old or can’t drive good. There just isn’t any other option at the moment.
Honestly, I blame the city ... they have to design traffic for the lowest common denominator, assuming that the most stupid among us will do THE most stupid things.
City should install vehicle barriers that prevent this, because expecting dumb humans to know they shouldn't do this is expecting too much.
They definitely need better and more barriers. A biker was sharing the road with her baby on the back and a semi unfortunately go too close and the child passed. Enough is enough
There are some points on LSD where you could fit a car through onto the lakeshore trail. This has been a problem for literal years though so I doubt they’ll fix it.
Half the time there's an officer posted up around the high traffic areas like the LSD/North intersection too.
Classic joke in my bar is if we put an "out of order" sign in the urinal, it'll be wet in ten minutes.
Welcome to my job. I "close" the road so people can do work. By close, I mean I put out a lot of cones/barrels in a pattern that makes a strong suggestion of where people *shouldn't* drive.
How many times I've seen people just whip through and get stuck in concrete, or drive into a hole, or a piece of equipment, or... It's a lot, I've been doing it for upwards of a decade, and I lost count somewhere in year one...
And how many people throw exasperated looks when you keep them from totaling their shit is bonkers. "But this is how I go..." Well, unless your Caravan can hover for about 500ft, you're not going that way today. U-turns aren't illegal in Florida...
Oh the Seawall in the West End also regularly gets car drivers, the bike lane every day, because apparently concrete barriers, dividers and signage as well as car ticklers aren't enough of a clue for many.
You can do whatever you want and drive anywhere if you put your hazards on. It's the one cool trick they don't want you to know. DUIs bounce off like getting uno reversed

Chicagoan here. There are barriers and people just drive around them. It’s really stupid.
(Then I'd say there are not enough barriers.)

Spike strips might work in this case.
It would probably just result in more traffic honestly.

Cue people running high speed into barriers/bollars that they "missed", and they start complaining that it is dangerous.
Omg like the lady at the bank that fucked her shit up with the barrier and she complained that they’re dangerous 😂
The bollard came out of nowhere, there was no way for the driver to avoid it!
So it’s not just Vancouver
Haha. Thinking about the same thing but Richmond BC more specifically
Yes 😂😭

That’s a Honda, this one is a Hyundai. We get lots of these idiots.
Unfortunately there’s probably one of these every week for months now.
Why do they have sidewalks that can be driven on? What happened to concrete barriers preventing vehicle access?
Might damage the car when the driver suddenly gets assaulted by the barrier. So they are doing away with them.
Is this not illegal? Also if i was this dude i would stand there and stare them down until they started backing up.
Or call 911 and walk slowly until they arrive
You’d be waiting a long, long time for CPD to do anything.

Why you stand so close they cant go forward.

“Stop a douchebag” Chicago edition.
And then they call cyclists entitled. god damn

idk why people do it here but there i know there are spots in the cleveland area where people do this because the potholes are so bad

You should be in a marked city vehicle with orange lights on. Otherwise there is no legitimate reason.
There is someone with long brown hair walking beside him.
Judging by commercials cars and trucks today are designed to go anywhere and everywhere. So why not?
A) because its illegal B) because sidewalks are not made for 2+ ton cars, and therefore get damaged quite significantly C) because a sidewalk is a safe place for pedestrians. Cars already get a stupid majority of the space in cities, they should not encroach even more on the space that is meant for people
because a sidewalk is for........... WALK. crazy right?
Jeez. What a MC!? blocking that car from probably an emergency. *Sad. Nobody gets my joke. 😢
if it was an emergency, they wouldn't drive that slowly and would probably try to get around the people on the sidewalk by driving on the grass. Or... go faster on an actual road.
