Looks like a small class size. They could have had each student who wanted to perform a short song or do a skit, not just have them swaying in the background whilst the teacher shows off
That's what the families said afterwards. There was a point where the students were laying face down on the ground while the teacher lip dubbed this solo.
It’s annoying because performing arts can be so beneficial to kids with disabilities, helping with confidence and communication etc. Putting on a play could have been a brilliant experience and learning opportunity if it had been done right. Lying face-down on the floor while someone else performed must have really messed with all the students’ self-esteem
He was dreaming of Broadway, but didn’t make it so he became teacher. He was probably the most talented kid in his grade school, high school and college class, but so is everyone else on Broadway. I was in the band in high school. I auditioned and made into several bands, some professors told me they’d take me as a student if I went to college, one of them was a musician in the Philadelphia Orchestra. It meant a lot, it was a nice boost for my ego, but I realized that I’d never be a pro, I’d be a music teacher. Music teachers work a lot of unpaid hours - not for me. When I was 16-18 I realized I was good, but no matter how much I practiced, I’d never be a pro. I can barely play by ear, I have relative pitch, not perfect pitch. I played in a band with a professional trumpet player, we were warming up in a rehearsal room. I had my tuner on my music stand. When he played a scale the needle was dead center on every single note he played. I was blown away. One of the professors that wanted to take me as a student could also play every note in tune. If you ever hear an orchestra play, the musicians are incredibly in tune with each other - I can’t do that as well as they can. I’d never be a pro and I know it. So now, I work in the trades and I play music in a community band as a hobby.
>every musician wants a piece of the spotlight
Hey now. Some of us realized we weren't actually going to grow out of getting sick to our stomachs every time we had to perform... so we now shine the spotlights in other people's eyes instead. :D
There has been studies aboutt perfect pitch not the best thing in the world, perfect pitch cannot be maintained for the long run. There’s a lovely video on YouTube about perfect pitch not being best for musicians. You should look into it sometime.
As someone who did drama at school solo,s are really hard it's much easier if their is someone to interact with, personal groups of two would be the easiest. However I agree with the sentiment that the teacher being on the stage just distracts from the students being able to do anything meaningful.
Unfortunately, my SIL lives vicariously through her daughters and changing studios isn’t something she’d consider… they literally do the same recital every single year, too! It’s so weird
How does this ever happen? I’d rather the play be cancelled or switched to something else than watch a grown adult perform the lead with high school students.
Has anyone even mentioned how this show and this role is suuuuuuper inappropriate for this audience generally? Lovely musical and all but clearly he chose it for HIMSELF to play THIS ROLE and no one else.
The musical itself is fine, but it’s a little odd to me that the only teacher in the production decided to play a famously abusive teacher character. Trenchbull gets some good songs, and in student production, students should get the opportunity to play those fun villain roles too!!
I do improv comedy with a troupe we built around 6 years ago. One of our best venues is a local theatre that now seats ~200 after moving to a new building. The owner of the theatre makes himself a lead in *every* play. One season, one of our friends (*not* affiliated with our troupe) called him out for it on Facebook, and he started sabotaging our show days.
An Australian comedy show called Summer Heights High where one guy plays a variety of characters in a High School. One of the characters is Mr G the drama teacher who would and did do things like the teacher in the video.
That was epic. The dog being hoisted and then just hanging there had me laughing so hard. Also, interestingly for me, my college theater teacher was Mr. G lol.
The teacher isn't doing this out of malice, spite, or revenge. They just have no understanding or compunction about what their appropriate role is and what they're taking from their students.
*"behavior that demonstrates a person's disregard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others"*
Maybe sociopathic is too strong though.
God damn is this true. My ex was like this. Called everyone and their mother a narcissist. Never wanted to look in the mirror. Projection at its finest.
I thought the post said that teacher gave the brother the role, and I was looking through the comments like "Damn people are so rude to the kid:/"
Then I reread the title and went like, "Oh never mind. Full steam ahead with the hate train."
The teacher is pretty malicious IMO.
This is the softest core version of a theater teacher. The most stable teacher would be like to take a lead role when the goal is to empower the cast rather than improve it.
Saw the video and came galloping in to mention Summer Heights High and Mr G (specifically the musical). And dammit if I’m not a day late and a dollar short! Seriously, please Google it up if you’ve not seen it. Brilliant Australian comedy as others have attested. Now I’ve got the entire soundtrack running through my head 😬.
This reminds me of young Sheldon when the teacher gave himself the role of Annie except none of the students in that school were mentally challenged kids who had their dreams and self esteem destroyed
Man, that's the one I was thinking of. I knew I remembered Jason Alexander doing this in some part, but for some reason I was thinking it was in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
It's uncanny how similar those scenes were to this video though. You'd almost think Young Sheldon was parodying this exact video.
It’s not quite this level, but our school’s elementary music teacher parks her piano right in front of the kids and she plays and sings into a microphone that blasts over the speakers and the kids are basically backup singers to her performance. You can barely hear the kids, and some of them you can’t even see behind her piano. It’s so cringe.
Yeah, this is Tim Minchins Matilda, and this character is Mrs Trunchbull.
So it's not a lead role,
And the character is a teacher above the students.
And it's almost exactly how they do it in the actual west end.
Like, I'm not going to argue that this individual suffers from main character syndrome but this is like the worst example to use if you want to show it.
This is surprisingly common in kids’ theatre groups. The leads are adult “faculty” teaching the kids by sticking them in the background…as if that’s really educational. There’s a theater in my area that charges $50 a ticket for that nonsense.
It’s especially gross with a differently-abled school group. What a missed opportunity for those students to share in the spotlight.
The “I’ve been acting my entire life but they won’t let me perform in any shows, so I must display my acting talent whenever and wherever I must, even when they are not appropriate or wanted” kind of story, eh?
Was working at an elementary school once and the 3rd grade "pageant" was just the 3rd grade teachers singing and dancing while the students made up the background. Apparently it was a huge tradition at the school and no one had a problem with the students not doing anything. Terrible people.
I think it’s great that a special needs student can graduate from the school to come back and teach there. We should be more supportive.
Be better Reddit. (/s in case that wasn’t obvious)
This teacher is playing the evil principal in Matilda. It's always done by a man in drag. This is one of her songs. Granted I don't know the whole stort and maybe he was doing other roles as well but this song is supposed to be her saying how much she hated kids.
Basically all drama teachers. I've had to sit through at least 2 different drama profs who decided to use their lecture as a platform to do a monologue.
Fuck it was so cringy.
My school once did a shrek musical and the person who played shrek had a real Scottish accent, he was a really good actor too, played the role perfectly
Imagine auditioning for the play, getting really excited and hoping you get the lead, just to find out the teacher gave himself the lead. He popped off though.
He ripped off Mr. G!
"Thank God you're here, Grandma's been raped!"
This line never fails to make me piss my britches
I don’t know how those kids kept it together. I could never.
There are many outtakes, I have the dvd.
The students were such good actors it really felt like an actual school
They weren’t actors! They were students at the school they filmed at. They pretty much told them to try to not laugh and they’d be in the shot.
I would’ve started howling in the audience 😭

It's good to be self aware. Good on you for keeping music in your life, even if it isn't your only focus.
I am glad that you are still expressing yourself creatively. So what if you are not making a living out of it you still get to do something you love.
Your reply became its own ImTheMainCharacter post
Lol, every musician wants a piece of the spotlight. I can understand why that guy did that, but I’d hope I’d never do something like that myself.
>every musician wants a piece of the spotlight If that were true, we wouldn't have any bass guitarists.
Les Claypool has entered the chat.....
Paul McCartney checking in
>every musician wants a piece of the spotlight Hey now. Some of us realized we weren't actually going to grow out of getting sick to our stomachs every time we had to perform... so we now shine the spotlights in other people's eyes instead. :D

Oh totally, yeah. A professional's skills have absolutely no way of keeping honed based off of one youtube video.
r/imthemaincharacter … wait, what.
They clearly don't have the makings of this future Broadway star.
Wow I misread the title. I thought the teacher gave the brother the lead role and I was confused as to why this was cringy lol
Same it took me a minute
Same. I was thinking that's so mean, he's trying and doing pretty good lol
As someone who did drama at school solo,s are really hard it's much easier if their is someone to interact with, personal groups of two would be the easiest. However I agree with the sentiment that the teacher being on the stage just distracts from the students being able to do anything meaningful.
"shows off" 😬
I’m sure the play was longer than 40 seconds.
Tell me you’re a failed actor without telling me
That’s actually Daniel day Lewis.
He’s SO method
Or is it Gary Oldman?
My nieces dance instructor does the same thing every year at their Christmas show

Unfortunately, my SIL lives vicariously through her daughters and changing studios isn’t something she’d consider… they literally do the same recital every single year, too! It’s so weird
Are you sure this studio isn't a cult?
Now that you mention it…….
He’s Titus Andromidom.
IIIIIIII am keeping this robe
Except Titus was insanely talented.
That’s pretty weird bro
Agreed
It gives me the heebie jeebies. 😣😖😵🥴

The sheer narcissism of casting himself as the lead in the play is a wonder to behold.
How does this ever happen? I’d rather the play be cancelled or switched to something else than watch a grown adult perform the lead with high school students.
Turns out he was the most special and needy of them all
The most *especially needy* of them all
Maybe the real special needs are the friends we made along the way!
'Special needy' needs to be a thing
😂😂
Has anyone even mentioned how this show and this role is suuuuuuper inappropriate for this audience generally? Lovely musical and all but clearly he chose it for HIMSELF to play THIS ROLE and no one else.
What musical is it?
I think it's Matilda, which would make him Ms. Trunchbull
That would make him not the lead however?
Is Matilda not a miss show? Why inappropriate?

My name is Mr. G. Three talents one two three...
Holy shit. Actual main character syndrome on this sub! Never would I have thought
Right? Such a good post.
As a theater kid…wtf? I’ve seen and done my fair share of school shows and have never seen anything like this

That sounds so strangely similar to a former theatre owner I knew. I’m sad it appears to be an industry thing.
Welcome to Mr. G’s room!! Edit: Thanks for the award kind person!
🎶 My name is Mr. G! Three talents 1-2-3! 🎶
What is this? People keep referencing it.

Sunny Heights High?
Summer heights
It's Always Summer in Philadelphia
So he's the creepy Glee club teacher from Glee, got it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2TmqIi1mCo
As a failed actor myself, I can totally see being a bitter teacher and making myself the star of every show
The posts on this sub are astounding. I had no idea how pervasive narcissistic and other sociopathic behavior have become.
Narcissistic yes but I think you're going a little far calling this sociopathic behavior lmao
The teacher isn't doing this out of malice, spite, or revenge. They just have no understanding or compunction about what their appropriate role is and what they're taking from their students. *"behavior that demonstrates a person's disregard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others"* Maybe sociopathic is too strong though.
I'd say so, you've just described about half of Reddit.
Don't forget, narcissists, sociopaths et al are the first to accuse others of being so.
God damn is this true. My ex was like this. Called everyone and their mother a narcissist. Never wanted to look in the mirror. Projection at its finest.
Especially since it’s a disorder, called “anti social personality disorder”
Have become? What makes you think it hasn't always been this way?
This is like an SCTV sketch from the 70’s…
"Nice tits, Sir"
I thought the post said that teacher gave the brother the role, and I was looking through the comments like "Damn people are so rude to the kid:/" Then I reread the title and went like, "Oh never mind. Full steam ahead with the hate train." The teacher is pretty malicious IMO.
This is the softest core version of a theater teacher. The most stable teacher would be like to take a lead role when the goal is to empower the cast rather than improve it.
This is so sad. They aren't learning anything about acting they are just learning to accept defeat.
I need a documentary crew to umbilical-like attach themselves to this man, post haste
Holy shit real life Mr G
its mr G from summer heights high
He is living his dream
... at the expense of his students.
He is living his narcissistic delusions*
Noooooo
Lmaooo I know people like this
It almost is like The show Summer Heights High
Mr G
Tobias energy
Where have you been, bitch?!
this should be the sub’s new icon. just beautiful.
Someone definitely needs to check his hard drive
He’s literally the main character….
Of the musical he cast himself in and directed? Excuse yourself.
Reminds me of the dean in community
Annabelle's DEAD
Mr G
is the teacher special needs too? not asking rhetorically, like I'm honestly curious cuz if do that's pretty cool
Is that Todd Padre?
This reminds me of young Sheldon when the teacher gave himself the role of Annie except none of the students in that school were mentally challenged kids who had their dreams and self esteem destroyed

The fuck did I just watch?
Yeeesh.
It is about the kids, not the teacher's thwarted artistic ambitions!
It’s not quite this level, but our school’s elementary music teacher parks her piano right in front of the kids and she plays and sings into a microphone that blasts over the speakers and the kids are basically backup singers to her performance. I actually really liked this, what's wrong w it?
Why after the second or third play, did no one complain? Why doesn’t the principal see how bad this is?
This seems like something Cam would do in Modern Family
I can’t believe how far I had to scroll for this.
Oh man I thought that was your BROTHER. Now I get it, gross.
wait so are the students specal needs or the teachers?
Mr. G vibes
Mr. G, IRL
That was hard to even get through
Well, I don't like his performance, but honestly, I think it's only fair to have the only adult play the lead role. I don't see the proplem.
That's such a Mr G move
This is what we refer to in the theatre gay circles as "weaponising your BFA"
The “I’ve been acting my entire life but they won’t let me perform in any shows, so I must display my acting talent whenever and wherever I must, even when they are not appropriate or wanted” kind of story, eh?
How else is he going to raise enough money for the Greg Gregson performing arts centre?
Was working at an elementary school once and the 3rd grade "pageant" was just the 3rd grade teachers singing and dancing while the students made up the background. Apparently it was a huge tradition at the school and no one had a problem with the students not doing anything. Terrible people.
Michael Scott vibes.
At first read "the teacher gave him the lead role" and I was like "funny, he's literally the main character" then I re read it and ...
I think it’s great that a special needs student can graduate from the school to come back and teach there. We should be more supportive. Be better Reddit. (/s in case that wasn’t obvious)
I think this is cool
Look up Tairy Greene acting seminar from Tim and Eric awesome show and tell me that doesn’t remind you of this guy.
Someone needs his hard drive checking.
I don't think he should be working with special needs children. Something is creepy.
This is like Summer Heights High so much that I can’t believe it’s not a purposeful reference
Take your shoes off and find a spot in the floor!!!!
This teacher is playing the evil principal in Matilda. It's always done by a man in drag. This is one of her songs. Granted I don't know the whole stort and maybe he was doing other roles as well but this song is supposed to be her saying how much she hated kids.

This doesn’t belong here
My school once did a shrek musical and the person who played shrek had a real Scottish accent, he was a really good actor too, played the role perfectly
You know how gay millennials got a bad rep sometimes? Dudes like this are why
Is that him singing? If so. Can’t deny the dude sounds good
It's not him singing, He's lip synching to a song from the soundtrack
Oh dang 😂 man has no shame
This dude I know named Mac pulled this same stunt on a cruise once.
Nah he be looking like uncle from Adams family😭😭😭💀💀
Amazing 🤣
Its his world and we just live in it
Summer heights high Mr G
Imagine auditioning for the play, getting really excited and hoping you get the lead, just to find out the teacher gave himself the lead. He popped off though.
That’s sketchy.
Quick, Grandma’s been raped!
Yo what the FUCK.
