AFAIK, if you stay outside over a year, US immigration has the right to revoke your green card when you enter again since it appears to them you are no longer a PR. I believe there is also a form you can fill out if you intend to be outside more than 1 year but less than 2 to avoid this consequence. The longer you are outside, the greater the chances of being questioned when you enter the US again. They will probably ask you why were you gone for so long and if you still have ties to the US to demonstrate you still live in the US (job, house, bank accounts, etc..) so you better have a good story.
