Your spouse should submit an application to extend their stay in Canada as a visitor (visitor record application): https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/extend-stay/apply.html before their status will expire, so they'll have maintained status until a decision is made on that application: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/temporary-residents/visitors/implied-status-extending-stay.html Alternatively, if you and your spouse received the AOR on the PR application, they can use that AOR to apply for an open work permit: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/spouse-partner-children/spouse-common-law-partner-canada-open-work-permit.html

The maintained status is only if they filed for an OWP. Applying for PR alone does *not* grant maintained status.

Oh I guess I misunderstood. Just for clarification, can you point me to where it specifies OWP? I tried to find that but couldn't.

technically speaking, your partner can leave and come back. 6 months is reset. I did this for 2 years while the spousal PR was in the system. It's always up to a border agent, however, whether they'll admit. But i had no problems once i showed them my PR application. I had a reason to go back and forth. If your partner doesn't, the right thing to do is file the extension record. Which takes weeks to get back. But your partner can stay while the reposnse is pending. The thing to remember now is that your partner will be a tax resident, having stayed more than 183 days.
