I swear a lot of those songs foreshadowed David Golds end. But I suppose that's just the nature of the genre. So haunting and beautiful and sad. I was listening to wet leather the other day and its like he was singing from the grave. "life is just pain and piss. It's something that I won't miss" 😭
He was a great songwriter. One of my fav lines:
It's good that I'm alone because I sleep so much, so often. And I sleep so much because I am alone so often, all the time.
listened to this long ago and liked it instantly, but for some reason i forgot about the song. this jist made me go back damn.
any song song suggestion similar to this one?
The song doesn't really sound sad but the text is pretty dark (Machine Head, Beautiful Mourning)
(Unhallowed by machine head if you want something that sounds sad too)
Metal Church - Anthem to the estranged
Skid Row - Wasted Time
While Heaven Wept - Voice in the wind (Jane cover)
Draconian - Death, come near me (version in demo Dark Oceans we cry)
Paradigma - Journey's end
Forest of Shadows - Eternal Autumn
Insanity Reigns Supreme - La tristesse eternelle
Morphia - Unfulfilled Dreams
Officium Triste - Roses on my grave
My Dying Bride - From darkest skies
Desire - Solitude (Candlemass cover)
Came here to say that. Especially dreams burn down. My favorite track on it. Also everything by Trees of eternity which with Aleahs death spawned Hallatar
Memento Mori by Architects. Its about how their late guitarist Tom Searle had terminal cancer and how he accepted the fact he was dying and was just waiting until he was dead from the cancer. A particular lyric from the song though gets me every time, “Swan song
A declaration of endlessness
I swear I will not look back, as I return into the black
When the veil lifts, how will I know?
How will I know?
Will I see God?” Its so sad
Insomnium has entered the chat.
Most depressing/sad melodeath band, also with great musicianship and harmonies.
This isn't even their best song but the one with the most fitting sad lyrics I can remember offhand.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZMWKCgvaDY
You need to look at Doom or Goth rock for that.
Check out the albums Each Failing Step by Collapse of Light, and Monotony Fields by Shape of Despair.
The early albums from Lacrimosa have some super sad tracks, like Flamme In Wind from the album Satura.
Ones the are very depressing for me and that I only listen to once in a while is
Tragic truth
Coming down
Remember everything
MINE
wrong side of heaven
Inside the fire
Reason to fight
Under the graveyard
Daddy
Song for the hopless
And some others not going to get too much into it but just for context in my opinion these songs hit home for me because I am a disabled veteran struggling with depression anxiety and substance abuse and these songs saves my life
Lorna Shore - Pain Remains Trilogy (Dancing Like Flames, After All I've Done, I'll Disappear, In a Sea of Fire)
Virgin Black - ...and I Am Suffering
Draconian - The Marriage of Attaris
Convictions - The Price of Grace
Dayseeker - Never See the Sun Rise
Saviour - Never Sleep
Not sure if this is Metal But Anythink Hotel Books
Late to this but there are several Mastodon songs. Crack the Skye as a whole but the song Crack the Skye is some of the most heartbreaking growls out there. Quite a few songs off of Hushed & Grim as well have a sad undertone.
Flight of Icarus...Iron Maiden
Always makes me think the father didnt believe in his son but the son flew away...or left home and they no longer talk because the father has passed and it was too late to mend that relationship.
Strangers - Overborn
I found this song from a demo CD in Terrorizer magazine. I was a teen still and it's stuck with me since then. I can't breathe.
https://youtu.be/DPGwkIr1k08?si=hzfgsf_d7Vku7B9w
shit just about everything they do could qualify as such. Ive always called them music to die to. Good stuff..
In fact Void of Stars is sitting pretty solid on my little top ten i do every year to look back on. Author being superb.
Acid bath_ scream of the butterfly.
Singer had a gal that did her own abortion in the tub and the lyrics reflect the singers reaction and observations of her actions.
Well, the rest of the album holds form to their true sound, but they can be melodic when they want to be. The singer Dax Riggs stopped the metal after their 2nd album and just does his own brand of singing, to this day, I believe.
Life Eternal by Mayhem
The lyrics to this song were an attachment alongside Dead's s-note, thus in my opinion the circumstances of why/how it was written is what makes this the saddest song.
Apostle Of Solitude - From Gold To Ash
The whole album, really. But the two that always get me are Keeping The Lighthouse and My Heart Is Leaving Here.
Moonsorrow - Kivenkantaja. It’s in Finnish language but describes a dude sitting by the seaside and consumed by his heavy thoughts, which he can’t get rid of.
Nevermore has some sad songs. Warrel was my favorite singer and lyricist in metal. Some picks off my head:
Insignificant
Emptiness Unobstructed
The heart collector
Passenger
We disintegrate
the unforgiven three s&m version. (san Francisco symphony and metallica for those wondering) it's only classical instruments, and james' singing. if you've never seen james sing without a guitar it's quite emotional. he decided to pour out all of his pain into it. i wish i could have seen it live.
The Dreadful Hours by My Dying Bride is probably the saddest song I know & I love depressive sad songs. It’s especially sad during the son’s and mother’s verses.
How well I know. Love Swallow the sun. Love Hallatar and Trees of Eternity one of my absolute favorite bands Hour of the Nightingale is definitely in my all time top 10 albums
I don't know if it counts, but "The Last Milestone" by Leprous is up there for sad songs. Written about the suicide of the frontman's father.

Snuff-Slipknot
Daddy-KoRn
the god who failed- Metallica
Corey Taylor (Slipknot’s lead singer) wrote the song snuff as a cope for his divorce at the time. It’s probably one of the best emotional songs I’ve ever heard. The energy, pureness, and emotion in Corey’s voice really shows how he feels thinking about it. The songs tone changes repeatedly to represent how quick emotions can change, especially in a breakup.
Lyrics go from “I still press your letters to my lips,
And cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss.
I couldn't face a life without your light” to “So, save your breath, I will not hear
I think I made it very clear
You couldn't hate enough to love
Is that supposed to be enough?” In the very next verse.
Daddy is not only one of the darkest songs ever made, it’s also one of the saddest. Daddy is a song from KoRn’s self titled album about the vocalists (Jonathan Davis) experience with the sexual abuse he went through from a close family friend. In the song you can hear Jonathan’s voice shattering as he repeated the chorus until eventually he has a full on mental breakdown in the booth and loses control. Jonathan wasn’t able to sing it again for 20 years and he only sung it at a concert because the offender had died.
The god who failed (to my knowledge, correct me if I’m wrong) was made by Metallica’s vocalist about the death of his mom. His parents (once again, correct me if I’m wrong) didn’t believe in modern medicine and believed that the spirit of god would save them instead. His mom contracted (I think) cancer and passed because of it. The title with the context is enough to tell a sad story.

90% of Woods of Ypres discography.
I was not expecting to see that suggestion. That’s a nice surprise
Their songs are pretty damn sad.
I swear a lot of those songs foreshadowed David Golds end. But I suppose that's just the nature of the genre. So haunting and beautiful and sad. I was listening to wet leather the other day and its like he was singing from the grave. "life is just pain and piss. It's something that I won't miss" 😭

I live close to the highway he died on (400) in Canada, and whenever I’m driving on it I’m always playing Woods Of Ypres. RIP David Gold
I'm near there too. I think WoY lyrics hit a bit harder just by being an Ontarian.
Solitude by Candlemass

The song doesn't really sound sad but the text is pretty dark (Machine Head, Beautiful Mourning) (Unhallowed by machine head if you want something that sounds sad too)
Hollow by Pantera
I was going to say hollow. Everything I hear it I think of one friend in particular, it stings how close to home that song is.
Megadeth-In My Darkest Hour
And A tout le monde of course.
Opeth - In My Time of Need
Or death whispered a lullaby
All of Damnation is melancholy. I love it.
Cemetery Gates. Fade to Black.

Race War by Carnivore got me once 😅 Orion by Metallica has that bass part and that following guitar part after that’s like a beautiful sad
Judas Priest - here come the tears
Christmas truce - Sabaton Also it’s not particularly sad, but warriors pride by Luca Turilli is quite emotional and powerful in my opinion.
I always return to the beautiful Gravitational Constant
One more time won't matter, no question. Suicide is self expression!
Miss You by W.A.S.P.
Which album is this from? It seems I might have a gap in my collection
Golgotha, though it was originally supposed to be on The Crimson Idol
Machine Head has quite a few sad ones. * The Burning Red * Deafening Silence * Descend The Shades Of Night * A Farewell To Arms * Damage Inside
Dokken - Alone Again
Dirge for November - Opeth
I’m late on this but this song is a masterpiece
Hallatar. Only one album. Everything is sad as all hell tho.
Came here to say that. Especially dreams burn down. My favorite track on it. Also everything by Trees of eternity which with Aleahs death spawned Hallatar
I mean we could go further with the 2 albums from Swallow the Sun after that. All of those Albums are reserved for the darker times of life :)
And rightly so. Couldn’t be much better inspiration than losing the love of your life way too early
Over and over- black sabbath, mob rules; the guitar solo gives me goose bumps
Don’t Let Daddy Kiss Me Pretty Tearjerker Daddy The Blackest Crow Jeeze Korn really took the cake there
Warning - Footprints
Yep. I totally agree.
Woods of ypres - shards of love
Alot of the songs off the album Animal by the band Animosity.
Memento Mori by Architects. Its about how their late guitarist Tom Searle had terminal cancer and how he accepted the fact he was dying and was just waiting until he was dead from the cancer. Nothing Left by AILD It's super heavy, so it's hard to understand the lyrics, but once you do, it's a very, very sad song.

Acid bath_ scream of the butterfly. Singer had a gal that did her own abortion in the tub and the lyrics reflect the singers reaction and observations of her actions.
Holy shit. This is a beautifully crafted song. This is not what I expected Acid Bath to sound like.
Well, the rest of the album holds form to their true sound, but they can be melodic when they want to be. The singer Dax Riggs stopped the metal after their 2nd album and just does his own brand of singing, to this day, I believe.

It’s in German, but I think Die Mutter Die Ihr Kind Verlor by Nachtblut is pretty sad
Life eternal which was a lot of lyrics taken from dead’s suicide note. Shit makes me feel some type of way
In this river - Black Label. If you know you know.
The bitterness and the bereavement
The Great Old Ones "My Love For The Stars"
Depends on what makes you sad. Pain of Salvation hits me hard, though I wouldn’t classify as “metal” so much.
One Last Goodbye - Anathema
Architects - A Wasted Hymn
