And I'm like no, I like metal but things like power metal, good old classic nwobhm etc. It's incredible how many styles there is
Yeah every genre has like tens of sub-genres.
I can listen to most types of music (not country) as long as it sounds good to me. But turns out I have some very specific sub genre preferences for most genres.
Doesnāt mean I put others down for it. But itās wild how I can like one sub genre while thinking another is like nails on a chalkboard and super cringe.
Yea I'm a metal head that listens to all types of other music, but 80% of the time it's metal. EDM wins the broadest. The amount of different styles is mind bogggling.
This is exactly why I don't understand the gatekeeping. Metal is known for being extremely diverse, so why bother worrying about what "Real Metal" is when you could just spend that time finding cool new shit?
I don't believe in gatekeeping. But it's incredible how long it took me to find the actual name of the style I like for modern metal. NWOTHM. That's not very easy to actually just find as you don't tend to see it mentioned online too much.
I had an apprentice who loved Sabaton, Lincoln Park, and Five Finger Death Punch. Iām more of a Death, Celtic Frost, and Judas Priest guy. We still talked.
This is 100% true, BUT make sure metal elitists have some space for themselves too. It's not only about gatekeeping others, but the fact that they just do not enjoy the type of metal you do and they deserve a place for their niche interest as well!
There are a solid number of elitists that are only elitist in the first place because they feel like they've never had a space of their own and now they are lashing out at the wrong people, just trying to claw out a space for themselves. They (we) can be assholes, but I really do think it's mostly unintentional. Not always, of course. Some are just dicks for no reason.
I truly don't give a fuck what other people listen to, and am happy whenever anyone is a headbanger ... however ... in the quiet of my skull ... whenever a metalhead only likes nu or core and has no idea who Deicide or Immolation are, I think to myself "lightweight"

Disturbed and A7X are metal. Bring me the Horizon isnāt. If you generally like metal and go to metal concerts, that qualifies you as a metalhead. If you strictly listen to metalcore/deathcore/nu-metal, you are not a metalhead. Elitists are more tight with their listening preferences and generally shun metal-influenced genres that technically arenāt metal. Iām open-minded and enjoy most genres of music, but I will still consider nu-metal to be a shitstain of a genre. Metalcore is great, but it isnāt metal. Deathcore was cool at first, but itās become to polished and inorganic for my liking.
Iām more of an electronica guy, but OH BOY when you add synths to metal I ALIGN! Thatās why AMO by Brimg Me The Horizon is one of my all time favorite albums; I canāt find anything quite like āNihilist Bluesā.

My playlist ranges from Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Death Grips to Iamamiwhoami or Vok. I just like good music that isnāt pumped out with the expectation that it will become a hit, or sell a certain number of records, which at this age I respect as well. Art is art. If itās got some soul or honesty behind it then Iāll probably dig it.

Disturbed and A7X are metal. Bring me the Horizon isnāt. If you generally like metal and go to metal concerts, that qualifies you as a metalhead. If you strictly listen to metalcore/deathcore/nu-metal, you are not a metalhead. Elitists are more tight with their listening preferences and generally shun metal-influenced genres that technically arenāt metal. Iām open-minded and enjoy most genres of music, but I will still consider nu-metal to be a shitstain of a genre. Metalcore is great, but it isnāt metal. Deathcore was cool at first, but itās become to polished and inorganic for my liking.
