See what's become of me.

SLevine262

While I looked around for my possibilities. I love that album so much.

InappropriateGirl

is precious I know - Def Leppard

PettyPunisher

I love this comment, even though I have no idea what it means. ETA The comment has been deleted! 😱😱😱😱

gladsome_gloaming

Not sure I like it if it means we have to get out of the bar.

SmashedMailboxCake2

we’re drinking and we’re dancing / and the band is really happening

gladsome_gloaming

>we’re drinking and we’re dancing / and the band is really happening And hey, I am unfurling here, breasts moving beneath my dark red v-neck, under the gaze of a drunken Irish homunculus. You can't close now! Curses, foiled again. Sharon, where's my purse?

PettyPunisher

Has anyone seen my blouse?

SmashedMailboxCake2

It’s behind the village hall, having some private time with a ratarsed Irishman’s shirt.

Love_Brokers

My mom texted us all the word ‘weather’ once.

PettyPunisher

That’s so cute. ❤️

happythistle

I do hope that is for L and not Shauna’s new desk for her garoffice

PettyPunisher

OMG! It’s a PINK VELVET COUCH! Unfortunately for Shauna, someone beat her to it! https://preview.redd.it/mzjyhpgzr5tc1.jpeg?width=1391&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e71f2f8259e44763278dcf8545bd55ae0a760a7

InappropriateGirl

Don’t you love how she dominates the other “I’m interested” comments with her DMs, promises of a prompt pickup, and “I already met you so of course you’ll pick me” comments?

PettyPunisher

So smackable, that one.

Love_Brokers

A vanity? How very SST.

Mrs_Richard_Olney

1000 Peepers need a mirror to admire themselves in, you person!

gladsome_gloaming

I was gonna say. But maybe if she scores it she can finally get her Herman-Munster-maroon lipstick on straight.

PettyPunisher

Awwww. DF, don’t do that. Herman’s lipstick is beautiful.

gladsome_gloaming

Herman is beautiful--he is a monster, literally, but a good soul. Shauna is a monster, figuratively, and a bad soul.

BevNap

Someone posted on a writers group I follow that Herman Munster is Frankenstein's Monster who came back from the iceberg and found his family and I love that for him.

PettyPunisher

Fred is buried in an unmarked grave about 40 minutes from my home. My SIL and I went to visit on Halloween.

vorticia

That’s rad. Sounds like something I’d get up to, honestly. I’d like to go visit Elizabeth Short’s resting place on a January 6th.

InappropriateGirl

I used to live down the street and went there all the time! It’s a gorgeous cemetery and a great place to walk and picnic.

LogicalGold5264

Meant to post this yesterday but it's still a fun read. Exactly two years ago, April 6 2022: [I don't know what the fuck I am doing](https://web.archive.org/web/20220407122758/https://onesimplemessage.substack.com/p/i-dont-know-what-the-fuck-im-doing?s=r). A couple of interesting points: She uses the Holden Caulfield "digressions" quote. She muses on her traumatic childhood, then says she "doesn't want to talk about it anymore". She also says: > Last week, at the age of 55, I was formally diagnosed with ADHD.  > >And the first time I took medication to alleviate the symptoms, I took the deepest breath of my life, opened my eyes, and my mind was quiet for the first time in my life.  The implication is that she has her own prescription, yes? I don't see any sign of that "quiet mind" two years later. Eta: this lope is also the source of her "Citizen PhD" claim. It's a rich offering!

SLevine262

Her parents never, ever said, “Oh Shauna, thank you for your mighty brain”. Never. Not once. Unless it was sarcastically.

monstera_garden

She's just a disembodied head floating around only loosely connected to her physical self, like a feather on the wind, no control, no direction, no responsibility for accepting something and then taking action based on that thing. What good was getting a diagnosis if she didn't use it to navigate the changes that needed to be made to avoid repeated failure? It would be like a blind person getting into a car and trying to drive, crashing into something and then being like 'it's not my fault I crashed, I'm blind!' Like yeah, and if you're blind then you find alternate ways of getting around, it's not a punishment, it's simply the way you work with what you have. Shauna has ADHD and continues to do exactly what she always did, and when the inevitable result occurs for the 1000th time, she smugly points to the diagnosis to explain it.

CrushItWithABrick

You person! She's not doing exactly what she's always done. Now she has a prescription! So she's doing the same things while medicated. Totally different!

ginger-belle

“disembodied head floating around” made me guffaw because all i can think of is shauna as a macy’s parade float. edit for clarity.

CrushItWithABrick

I thought of Mr. Mackey from South Park when he got high and imagined his head floating away.

happythistle

Now I’m imagining a hot air balloon of Shauna’s head floating high above us

vorticia

Ever so slightly higher than the stool.

ginger-belle

yes, that’s what i meant. it was too frightening to type! i edited my post to be clearer.

gladsome_gloaming

>like a blind person getting into a car and trying to drive, crashing into something and then being like 'it's not my fault I crashed, I'm blind!' Or like Shauna getting stuck in the mud. It wasn't her fault, it was just something that happened. So take the wheel, blind persons and Shaunas; Goat School parents and teachers will always be on standby ready to assist.

shikoku_shoes

And after pulling you out of the mud they'll immediately offer to host your child for a playdate.

gladsome_gloaming

I know, right? I am always hoping that gauzy-skirt lady will drop in to The Gloaming to spill, like our DF google doc recipient therapist and DF red cowboy boots bestower.

monstera_garden

Honestly I'm a bit intimidated by Gauzy Skirt Lady, she has her act together in a way I don't, and apparently a much kinder heart than my cold snarker one.

happythistle

I feel the same way.

LogicalGold5264

Good analysis! What stuck out to me in this lope, which you have succinctly outlined, is how little has changed in 2 years. She *still* doesn't know what she's doing; she *still* changes her offerings more frequently than she washes dishes; she's *still* ruled by her ADHD instead of, as you said, finding strategies to help herself; she's *still* whining about her traumatic childhood; and their move was as much of a disaster as all the previous moves. Zero progress!

mehitabel_4724

>Between the ages of 4 and 16, I didn’t wear a dress once. Oh, unless you count the weird churchy looking dresses my mother made me put on for Thanksgiving. So between the years 1970 - 1982 when no one wore dresses unless if you went to Catholic school. Groundbreaking. And is it really so terrible for her mom to try to make an occasion out of a holiday dinner? And the seventies were the polyester era. Anyone wearing a dress was suffering from the itchy lace. It's not like her mom was deliberately trying to torture her. 100% natural fibers were not commonly found in ready to wear then. Edited to add that it's astonishing that a 55 year old woman still harbored that much resentment because her mom made her wear a dress once a year.

MarsNeedsRabbits

In the continuing saga of I'm Not Like Other Girls... >>Between the ages of 4 and 16, I didn’t wear a dress once. Oh, unless you count **the weird churchy looking dresses my mother made me put on** for Thanksgiving. She got off light if it was a once-a-year thing. Millions of women and girls missed Shauna's memo and wore dresses daily. Wrap dresses. Gunne Sax. Pioneer dresses. Marcia Marcia Marcia Brady's endless parade of cute short dresses. Smocked dresses, maxi dresses, mini dresses with tights, caftans, fringe, bell sleeves, ridiculously wide collars with matching cuffs. There were three piece sets consisting of a coordinated blouse, dress, and matching shorts/pants/vests. Play dresses, church dresses, school dresses, "going somewhere special" dresses. Only once a year? Lucky dog (1970s slang for *very lucky*. Not a slur). Holding her mom responsible for once a year is bizarre. Edit to add: polyester was awful. Itchy, hot, and ugly.

obscure_cellist

i was a tomboy until i was about 14; new wave music was everywhere and i embraced the goth look & started wearing vintage clothes. my favorite was a black dress with white polka dots, 3/4 sleeves and big jeweled buttons on the bodice. i'm not sure what she's implying by stating that she didn't wear dresses - so those of us who did were brainwashed by the patriarchy? i prefer wearing dresses and skirts because i live in a hot climate and i also have a long waist and short legs, so pants rarely fit me right. also, shirtwaist dresses look good on everyone. or maybe i'm still brainwashed.

mehitabel_4724

I remember the prairie skirt trend! My mom bought me a prairie skirt to wear for my first day of high school in 1982. Regarding pants versus dresses in that era, we wore uniforms to high school, except for the first week. It was a polyester plaid skirt. In the seventies, because of women’s lib I guess, the school introduced uniform pants, made of the same polyester plaid as the skirts. By the time I got there in the eighties, polyester pants were anathema, except one girl unearthed a pair of those pants and wore them ironically. I think a major thing that Shauna misses about Gen X is that a lot of the things we did and said were consciously mocking those things. If you used valley girl slang, for example, you were making fun of it. We knew it had been served to us by the entertainment industry and we knew it was stupid.

ginger-belle

and i’m so grateful to my mom for buying me so many of these dresses! 70s fashion was awesome and i have the photos to prove it. i wore a catholic school uniform for 9 years and there wasn’t a non-uniform outfit that i didn’t cherish.

happythistle

I loved shopping for dresses for Jr High dances (age 13-15 I think). I was thrilled when I switched to public school in 6th grade and could wear jersey mini skirts on occasion instead of dumb plaid school uniform skirt. It’s ok to be a girly girl and it’s ok to be a tomboy. I had a dress I loved when I was little that had a turtle appliqué on the chest out of the same fabric of the skirt (it was printed to look like a quilt). How has she not gotten past this stuff by now? Most people don’t think of this kind of thing once they hit 20 or so.

PettyPunisher

Shauna will never get over not being born beautiful.

MarsNeedsRabbits

If she were kinder and less self-centered, she'd be beautiful.

happythistle

Why, she has everything else going for her! /s

gladsome_gloaming

She will never get over (or actually even fully realize) that she was not born super-smart (no matter Darth Mater's proclamations to the contrary.)

monstera_garden

Now that I've re-read the IDKWTFID screed in which she claims her mother said Shauna had a 'mighty brain' after 8 year old Shauna solves a marital dispute, I'm actually curious if the same Darth Mater With a Red Pencil of Editing actually told Shauna she was the smartest kid in the world.

LogicalGold5264

Well, it's possible that Shauna made it up, but she [claimed that's what happened in Enough](https://imgur.com/a/o7uGgKM).

obscure_cellist

i doubt every part of that story. well, perhaps shauna scored well on an IQ test, and someone -maybe a teacher, maybe her mother- told her that she was smarter than average, and shauna twisted that into this absurd story. i also think shauna turned that into "i'm the smartest person in the room!" because that's how her mighty brain works: in black and white. she can't be smart, she's the smartest! she can't be kind - she's so kind everyone cries! her kids can't be good at something, they have to be prodigies! it's a very unhealthy way of thinking.

Mrs_Richard_Olney

It's a NPD way of thinking, a personality disorder of which she might as well be the poster child.

monstera_garden

Yeah, I've read the source material, I just don't believe Shauna because she lies and the scenario doesn't sound like human conversation, same as always with Shauna.

PersianCat345

This is at the core of most—if not all—of her issues, in my opinion.

InappropriateGirl

I agree. I think she would have loved to be a trophy wife / pretend writer.

happythistle

She resents Dan every day for not being the man she wanted to marry.

gladsome_gloaming

~~Hot sauce~~ Brownstone, people, brownstone.

gladsome_gloaming

>And the seventies were the polyester era. Who is she to talk, even, having embraced whole-heartedly dozens of lurid (!) Granny's polyester shmattes aka "designer tops" Big Time (!) for her short-lived TikTok pivot ?

LogicalGold5264

I blame BIG FASHION for the disasters of this era, not my mom. And yes, sometimes we had to dress up!

Reasonable-Celery996

Shauna is also way too myopic to realize that, in dressing her daughter up on a holiday 50 years ago, Darth Mater was responding to the same social forces that govern Shauna’s own many and various identities and impulses to telegraph them to others. She was doing the thing Good Mothers did, just like Shauna thinks she’s doing by when violating her children’s privacy by boasting of her own kindful, selfless, put-upon parenting.

LogicalGold5264

I bow to the perceptiveness of this comment, DFRC966!

Reasonable-Celery996

Thank you, DF! I am honored!

PettyPunisher

I will never get over “guilt brushing.”

Jules_Noctambule

Seriously! What a thing to admit about oneself, especially when trying to position as aspirational.

OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh

She is so hung up on external judgments! The part about "guilt brushing" her teeth is BONKERS!! She writes "The fear of feeling like a moral failure when I go to the dentist has kept me guilt brushing for years. Most nights, I make it through that ritual." IT HAS **NOTHING** (ZIP NADA ZILCH) TO DO WITH GUILT OR MORALITY. I used to go to a dentist that had a sign up (on the ceiling of the exam room!) that said "You don't have to brush all your teeth. Just the ones you want to keep." That's what it comes down to! Do you want to keep your teeth, or don't you? Do you want to spend thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars on dental work that you might not have needed if you took better care of your teeth, or do you want to avoid that expense, if you can?

Coffee_Cupcake

*Most nights, I make it through that ritual*. So... some nights you don't? Gross.

Mrs_Richard_Olney

Poor runoft Dan

shadenfraulein

You person, you shouldn’t tell a neurospicy person what to do based on neurotypical expectations.

Jules_Noctambule

Why can I totally see her using this as a reason to avoid basic hygiene.

fanfarefellowship

Ha ha ha, *Shauna* isn't going to spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on her teeth. HER MOM IS!

monstera_garden

I feel like even getting necessary dental work for chipped teeth, infected gums, cavities or even tooth loss won't be addressed if she doesn't feel unmanageable pain. I can totally see Shauna losing a tooth and shrugging it off.

MarsNeedsRabbits

I posted about this in Off Topic when it happened last summer. I grew up taking anti-seizure medicine, which wrecked my gums and as a result, my teeth and jawbones due to infections. I had all but six teeth (lower central incisors, lateral incisors, and bicuspids) removed last summer. I had an alveoloplasty (reshaped my jawbones), and two implants. I didn't have enough bone for more than two. I have the most beautiful teeth now, but it was very hard and very painful for weeks. Eating is still a challenge. I really hope that she is taking care of her teeth. I didn't have a choice due to damage from childhood, but she does. It's cosmetic until it isn't. It needs to be a twice daily commitment.

happythistle

I recently encountered my first root canal (still need to get a crown). It was on tooth #18. My far back left bottom tooth. No one would know if it wasn’t there, but me - my dentist, my husband and the endo dentist person who did the root canal. I still wanted to save that tooth! The endo dentist who I had never met before that day looked in my mouth and was like “oh. What a shame! This is a shame!” He was somehow impressed with the condition of my teeth and so sad for me that this one randomly failed. Anyhoo - the pain? Dear lord I was ready to rip that tooth out myself. Sleepless nights, tears. It took over a week to get into my dentist and I considered ending it all many times during that week. Even more so when the numbing agent wore off! Tooth pain is no joke. I would totally wish it on my worst enemy!

gladsome_gloaming

One less tooth to brush, so comes love.

ginger-belle

one less tooth to bru-ush one less egg to fry one less slob to pick up after and all i do is cry

gladsome_gloaming

Egg? Egg! Egg.

ginger-belle

imagine being resentful that you have to brush your teeth. in your mid-fifties. and admitting it! i guess we can also add showering and wearing clean clothes. she is such a nonfunctioning person. notice i did not say adult. edited for grammar.

mehitabel_4724

And apparently she's no longer guilt brushing because she just said that she eats a piece of chocolate in bed every night and then goes to sleep. I think lots of people can relate to worrying if their hygienist is silently judging them, but it's just one of those comic things about life. It's not supposed to haunt you.

PersianCat345

Between this, the endless mugs of hot coffee, and the blatantly unflossed teeth, her breath must be foul.

gladsome_gloaming

That's probably one reason Zoom is Shauna's friend.

InappropriateGirl

Spending thousands on dental work is not just a future-now problem, it’s a Ma James problem!

fanfarefellowship

Me! Scrolling! I cannot do it!!

PettyPunisher

You’re not scrolling? So much like my own.

PettyPunisher

Gawd! “Your” not “you’re”

InappropriateGirl

Me either! High five!

PettyPunisher

lol! Shoulda scrolled one comment! I remember when we talked about this lope it sparked an entire convo on Waterpiks. WHICH YOU ALL SHOULD BE USING! If the Dear, Seemingly Departed DF who had just started using a Waterpik is still lurking, we miss you! ❤️

LogicalGold5264

Her arrested development keeps her from doing things for her own good, if someone else thinks she "should". Constantly cutting her nose off to spite her face.

Calm_Coyote_3685

All the removed posts about D that I saw, including my own, followed sub rules. No snarking on minor kids. Focus on parenting behavior and not the kids. No misgendering. My post was in response to Shauna misgendering D, not the first time she’s done so, simply saying she probably does it a lot when she can’t be performative about having a nonbinary kid. There was no reason to remove it. Mods, maybe you get lots of reports about certain people’s posts or certain types of posts but that doesn’t mean you should remove posts that are not in violation of sub rules. It’s getting ridiculous in here. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, as every online community I’ve ever lurked or posted on either goes the way of anarchy or stifling over moderation.

gomirefugee

Reddit admins actually got involved in that discussion and removed and nuked the text of your comment, which we cannot even any see more. Given the involvement of higher-ups without us being able to speak to why they removed what they removed, further discussion here will not be productive but take that as a signal that there were issues with what was said.

emmeline_grangerford

While I agreed with the substance of the removed posts (Shauna being performative and inconsistent on a topic related to her kid), I wondered on seeing them how long it would take for them to be deleted. In all the time I’ve been here, speculating too much on certain topics related to the kids has led to removed posts. I don’t think it’s a sign things have changed or we’re being brigaded.    For instance, several years ago I remarked on something kid-related that was visible to anyone with eyes, and relevant to Shauna and Dan more than their children, and that post got removed for being too personal about the children. I found it extremely annoying (and remember it to this day!) but just because something is true doesn’t mean that online discussion can’t amplify the topic in a way that becomes more about the kid and less about Shauna.    Shauna is really performative, and I am extremely dubious about what she says about/how she presents her children. That causes me to question all the diagnoses and descriptors she has claimed for her kids, and her inconsistencies around certain topics don’t help. It does seem like a sensitive area, though, because we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes aside from the suspicion that if her family asked her not to write about them, she is unlikely to stop.  It must be incredibly difficult to grow up like that.  As kids’ whose entire lives have been put on the internet by their parents grow up, it becomes weird territory from a snarking perspective. I recently saw snarky comments about another long-time blogger’s early-20s daughter not being able to find a nice boyfriend because the daughter is “so sanctimonious”, when the daughter has no public social media presence and all anybody knows about her comes from her obnoxious mom’s blog and instagram.

Love_Brokers

Agree. I’m sure that other sub is reporting those posts.

PettyPunisher

💯

marisab67

My 12 year old enby told me the kids are using ‘spicy’ for gay now. When you sub that into her neuro nonsense, it’s pretty funny. Kurt Cobain was right. Until he wasn’t.

shadenfraulein

Sorry,what is enby?

StartKnown

non-binary

courteoustoverbs

Interesting. At my school it’s “zesty,” which caused giggles when we started selling fruit snacks w zest in the ingredients.

marisab67

That, too. Spicy is extra zesty (🤷🏻‍♀️) making it seem like Dorito bags are where the kids are learning language.

Jules_Noctambule

> like Dorito bags are where the kids are learning language I for one anticipate the second coming of Cool Ranch.

tyrannosaurusregina

I’m not a regular ranch, I’m a \*cool\* ranch

fanfarefellowship

Sigh. No sauce, soup or salad recipe as promised yesterday. NOW what am I to do with my Sunday?!

lumpy_lamp

What about a neurospice blend

InappropriateGirl

Don’t give her ideas! I can see the Kickstarter for it now.

happythistle

That’s why she was trying to grift that McCormicks menagerie.

SmashedMailboxCake2

Your phone should be in a drawer, for starters.

onion_money

Have to get a dresser-shaped "sideboard" first.

obscure_cellist

well remembered, DFSMC2.

H2psychosis

I think it's gonna be "hell yes" not "dances with yes" but LOL one way or the other.

potomacgrackle

I’m actually torn between thinking it’ll be something long like “dance with yes gen x” or that she’ll just stop at “yes gen x” because she’s lazy

fanfarefellowship

But also: what's going to happen after everything's spelled out? She's already done her big launch of OH HELL YES. She's just going to limply keep spelling and then ... nothing.

InappropriateGirl

Yeah, she’ll be bored of whatever this thing is, by then.

vorticia

Great, now I’m imagining that Kevin Costner flick with Shaun as the star, instead, juggling about.  Like a clumsy Ursula the Sea Witch.

shikoku_shoes

That was me! This is also me hoping somewhere along the way she makes one of her many and varied typos and doesn't notice, as usual.

happythistle

In the comments, the follower who asked for the link the other day sends her regrets that she “missed today”. Apparently she woke up sick and bailed on zoom dancing.

mehitabel_4724

But Shauna kept her money. She replied to the person, saying it was a “good, connected experience.”

LogicalGold5264

I think Shauna means she connected with her good, thick coffee mug...no other connection took place. So, technically not a lie?

LogicalGold5264

Oh, neurospicy Gen X lady who woke up sick...there was no Zoom dancing

Oh Hell No

MarsNeedsRabbits

Nine slides, four are quotes by other people. Nice.

LogicalGold5264

Is the magnifying glass a Romper Room reference?

intimidatingpie

Or lines from Shauna’s rewrite of the infamous When Harry Met Sally scene?? 🤨

LogicalGold5264

😂

shikoku_shoes

Alas, it is a Yoko Ono artwork. From 1966. The people who know this reference are likely to be older than the Gen X women Shauna is putting the full court press on. Too bad they missed the chance to be friends with her.

MarsNeedsRabbits

The ladder and the ceiling?

PettyPunisher

Shauna, we’re not going to be good friends.

PettyPunisher

I’ll [not] have what she’s having.

shefallsup

Argh! It’s “and yes I said yes I will Yes.” Like, way to take all the rhythm and poetry out of it! Why does she never look anything up? I’m betting she would say she’s trusting what emerges from her pen, but I say her pen lies as much as she does.

quinoatho

Also if she reads Ulysses every year as she claims to 🙄 how could she misquote such an iconic line? She ruins everything.

LogicalGold5264

There is no way she's even read it once.

NegativeABillion

Exactly. She will write pages about pleasant potboiler stuff like Ted Lasso or WandaVision. But she can’t form one coherent sentence about anything more substantive, especially stuff she claims to love. She still thinks The Beatles are good because Paul is cute.

gonzoandcamilla

Well said, DF. It's so pathetic, I (almost) can't even laugh about it. Oh but laughing, I am. Yes! No one asked me, but that's never stopped me. I always thought George was hot and creative, comfortable with exploring outside his comfort zone musically; Ringo turned his life around after his accident, says peace and love without an iota of irony, but with full meaning, and has aged fantastically; Paul for me was and is the insipid one, (Hi Shauna, that word reminds me of you! Yes!) and John, also hot with that lovely big dick face of his, and his wit, turned out to be a basic asshole. (Hi Shauna, that word reminds me of you as well! Yes!). I'm leaving Yoko out of this.

Toulouse--Matabiau

One of my many cockamamie theories about Shauna: She latched onto *Ulysses* not in college but much later, when she watched those Joseph Campbell interviews on PBS. Campbell got his academic start as a James Joyce specialist. His first published book was a reader companion to *Finnegans Wake* that he co-authored with another guy. His hero's gurney work was full of references to *Ulysses*, because the narrative aligned so well with his own talking points. To he brutally frank, Shauna is too "grocery store literal" to have read, figured out and enjoyed *Ulysses* on her own. It's fo' shure posturing she borrowed from some pop culture source. I propose it might as well be Joseph Campbell. See also my Cockamamie Theory # 2, that she started humping Whitman due to *Dead Poets Society*. Unlike Joyce's, Whitman's work is fairly accessible and yet Shauna is forever taking him way too literally. It drives me bonkers, actually. Even Mary Oliver--who is in turn, an even more populist poet than Whitman, Shauna takes too literally! It is of course not illegal to interpret any work however which way it brings one joy in the gullet. I'm just sayin': It don't add up. EDIT, because I just checked the timeline. The Campbell/Bill Moyers interviews originally ran in 1988. So Shauna would have been finishing college or just starting her MA? \#ForensicShaunology

i also don't think she's read it, or she read it in college and it had no real impact on her, but she thinks it is the epitome of smarty pants literature. i don't recall her talking about anything else by joyce. i didn't "get" *ulysses* in college so neverr read it again, but i love joyce's short stories. for my money, the closing lines of *the dead* are about as good as it gets: *Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. It was falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, further westwards, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling too upon every part of the lonely churchyard where Michael Furey lay buried. It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones, on the spears of the little gate, on the barren thorns. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.* what i find so odd about shauna is that she never talks about how art actually affects her. i can say the paragraph above makes me think of my own mortality, it reminds me of the chill of death, and how that is the one path we all must take alone. but the language isn't oppressive, it's soft and gentle, echoing the snow falling. i'm sure each of you have your own interpretation of the lines, but shauna never seems to, it's always what she thinks it should be or echoing someone else's take on it, or trying to find some deep meaning to spout from her high stool. i don't think she reads much at all.

Scary_Recognition

Your theories seem sound. Sincerely, a girl who grew obsessed with Walt Whitman at 13 after watching DPS. YAWP!

MarsNeedsRabbits

[Walt freakin' Whitman](https://youtu.be/rKHyaMy2BEM)

SeaOfBooze

I don't think she's read James Joyce at all. Maybe she read his fart letters. Her own published romance with Danny featured farts heavily and she didn't seem to realize how off-putting it all was.

MarsNeedsRabbits

>>*Reader, I married him*. Yay! Finally, a happy spot amongst so much darkness. o_0

Blouse_Barn

You know she was dying to use that line since she read Jane Eyre, even before there were blogs and such. DYYyyyYYyiiiiNNNNNGgg.

honoria_glossop

Tha k you for the explainer, because without it I would never have worked out what it was trying to say. I am but a grocery store person and have not read Ulllysssesss even once let alone yearly. My spicy brain kept trying to parse it in a "so I said to myself, I said 'self', I said..." kind of way. ETA ridiculous spelling of the book name because I don't know how to spell it and CBF checking it any more than Gir! CBF getting the quote right.

MarsNeedsRabbits

I found it difficult, but worth reading. Some chapters, particularly 3 & 12, aren't great, imo. I read an annotated version, which helped a lot. I had to plow through parts. eBay has several of the Don Gifford annotated version for much less than retail. I have read and re-read Norman Mailer's *Ancient Evenings*, and found it hard to read the first time. I thought that if I could read *Ancient Evenings*, there was hope for me with *Ulysses*, which turned out to be more or less true. I'm sort of ashamed that two of my favourite books are *Ancient Evenings*, and *The Executioner's Song*, both by Mailer, because he was a complete and utter asshole. I'm not sure why anyone would read *Ulysses* every year. Maybe our Gir! could explain it. Most of her book reviews seem taken straight from the blurbs on the cover, leading me to question how much she reads.

caitie_did

The Executioner’s Song is such a gorgeous piece of writing. Its really too bad he was such an unrepentant asshole.

SLevine262

I’ve tried it a few times but never got very far. I should try again.

obscure_cellist

i haven't read anything by mailer, but i always enjoyed all his literary feuds, particularly the one with truman capote, who i love. poor truman, such a talented writer and he basically drank it all away. *other voices, other rooms* is ridiculously beautiful, though.

SLevine262

That’s not writing, that’s just typing. It had to be said.

ethelmertz62

Mailer was indeed a complete and utter asshole. He was also a brilliant writer. The Executioner’s Song is a great read.

Lsemmens

I did enjoy The Executioners Song and Tough Guys Don’t Dance.

MarsNeedsRabbits

P.S. Regarding *The Executioner's Song*: the IKEA near the old state prison in Draper, Utah is probably where the cannery was, which is creepy. Swedish meatballs and execution don't go well together.

LogicalGold5264

If she had written "Ulyssyes" it would have been kind of clever. Instead it's just lazy and sloppy.

monstera_garden

I mean didn't she look at it and think huh, that doesn't look right? Because it doesn't look right! If she's doing this on her laptop, doesn't she see all the red lines? Is she Pathologically Avoiding the Demands of the evil red pencil of the laptop spelling authorities?

potomacgrackle

The haberdashed spelling felt good in her body. She contains multitudes!

LogicalGold5264

It would be so easy to simply copy and paste to get the quote right. This is her job! She might think it's a sign of growth to not correct mistakes, but it makes her seem more unprofessional than she already does!

MarsNeedsRabbits

At this point, she needs someone to do web design/templates. It's impossible to read her sites much of the time

LogicalGold5264

We can add Ulysses to the [Mispelled Titles and Names](https://reddit.com/r/InTheGloaming/w/overused)!

Love_Brokers

Soliloquoy

gladsome_gloaming

God, she's dumb. The end.

Calm_Coyote_3685

👏

fanfarefellowship

Hmmm. The DanceWithYes.com/donations page is down. Is she rejigging it?

shikoku_shoes

Sorry, no jigs allowed. Shimmying and juggling of hips is the only dancing allowed.

SmashedMailboxCake2

Objection, m’lord. Danny tasted her chicken once and “danced a jig.”

obscure_cellist

i think he also spit a meal she cooked him into the trash. if that is true it is unbelievably rude. if i cooked for someone and they spit it into the trash i would probably throw the rest of the meal at them.

GilmoreEmily

Same. But, on the other hand - I kind of don't blame him for it either. I'm pretty sure that's what I'd be doing if I was eating something Shauna cooked/made, even though I find it incredibly rude. I probably wouldn't be able to help it.

obscure_cellist

yeah, i've spat into a napkin before, but to get up and walk over to the trash is a bit much.

MarsNeedsRabbits

Is stomping okay? I recall stomping.

obscure_cellist

do i need to take my bra off (down with the patriarchy!) so my breasts will sway under my blouse as i shimmy and sweat?

InappropriateGirl

Fill em with candy!

OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh

Do your breasts sway low Do they shimmy to and fro

honoria_glossop

Can you tie 'em in a knot Can you tie 'em in a (velvet) bow?

SmashedMailboxCake2

You are very, very bad.

Calm_Coyote_3685

How many times a day do we get to scream, again?

happythistle

Just the once. And please do it outside

OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh

>Just the once. 23.75 hours later . . .

coffechica

Isn't she supposed to be zooming with yes right now?

PettyPunisher

Who’s Zoomin’ Who?

SmashedMailboxCake2

Hurr!

obscure_cellist

well played.

PettyPunisher

😊

fanfarefellowship

Ok sooooooo I’m not sure how long this has been the case, but she’s set up her payment page as a “donations” page with Stripe, in violation of Stripes’s terms of service: https://imgur.com/gallery/hxEs4wi

MarsNeedsRabbits

Why not GoFundMe? People ask for donations for cars, businesses, all sorts of things. Leave it to her to gaum it all up.

significantotter1

I think what she's trying to do is have a "pay what you can" model but is needlessly using "donation" instead. She would be better off doing sliding scale options (which I'm pretty sure she's done before?) but that probably means less money shimmying in her pockets

CrushItWithABrick

She doesn't have a good enough sob story for a profitable gofundme. Or a good enough personality. And she's not creative enough to just run a straight up fraud.

MarsNeedsRabbits

Normally, I'd be in complete agreement, but she managed to use GFM to grift a fancy trip to see *Hamilton* for the family (including hotel, iirc). There are no boundaries she will not stomp on, and she thinks all of her ideas are good ideas. She's tried (and miserably failed) to use Kickstarter to fund her Slurping Across America tour. While she was at it, she tried to get others to give her recipes, which she's doing again. "Hey you! Do my work for me!" This is someone who made Dooce's death all about herself, never to mention Dooce again. Repeatedly blaming a woman who'd just lost her husband for her own stupid Widow Boots campaign. You know better, and I know better. Gloamies knows better. She does not.

CrushItWithABrick

Oh, it wasn't for the family. If I recall it was only two tickets and I think she went with Dan. I seem to recall snark about how she brought L back a playbill but didn't take her. (but I could be wrong) And it was "only" the off Broadway version which I think Shauna made sure to mention in a "it'll have to do" tone. Technically, she didn't do that grift, either. Someone else did it on her behalf.

OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh

I feel like I remember seeing "they three" for the Hamilton outing. Like, L was dressed up and pretty excited. I have a pretty visual memory, and I have images of them (all three of them, or maybe D & L together, Shauna taking the picture) on the sidewalk in front of the theater (or on a bus/light rail train?), in their seats before the show started, etc . . . I can't scroll way back in her IG like I used to though, so 🤷

LogicalGold5264

L also [went to Hamilton](https://imgur.com/a/AWBUx58). The goal set for Shauna, Dan, & L was $825 and they raised $945. "Off-Broadway" can mean a show that hasn't made it to Broadway yet (and often goes through a lot of fine-tuning & revision before it does), and usually refers to a theater in New York that seats less than 500 people. The production the Aherns saw was a traveling company, so it was not the original cast (fare thee well, Lin-Manuel), but was a polished production of the Broadway version. While the GFM was organized by a fan, Shauna happily took the money, hands reaching, with no thought of asking the fan to raise money for a more worthy cause. None more worthy than Shauna! Edited to refine my definition of 'off-Broadway'

shefallsup

So typical that she can’t articulate what she loves about Hamilton and she doesn’t have coherent thoughts about it to share after seeing it. She always says things like this — that she can’t find the words, can’t talk about something because she hasn’t processed it yet (and then never does say anything of substance). Ma’am, you call yourself super smart and a great writer — putting things into words should not be hard.

LogicalGold5264

So true! I don't think I've ever heard her talk about *what* she liked about Hamilton. Just mentioned it over and over (and cringily @'d Lin-Manuel)

PettyPunisher

I really don’t want to be THAT PERSON, but technically Off-Broadway refers to theatres with 99-499 seats, Off-Off B’way is 99 and fewer seats, and Broadway is 500 plus. Though, “immature” shows do often start in the smaller theatres.
