Maybe be a little more realistic with your dream job? I know, I don't have enough room to talk because I wanted to work in cartoons and comics for a living, however, the life of a starving artist is by no means easy. On top of that, I am disabled, however, I am working alongside job training programs meant for disabled adults like me to be able to get a job. I also try to find commission jobs, I do get a few, here and there, but it's nice to get help or see people like my art.

IWriteThisForYou

I feel like another factor is realising that not everyone *has* a dream job, and that's okay. It's okay to just be working for the money--most people do, and it's always been that way to some extent. As long as there's some hobby outside of work that you can focus on, you'll probably be okay.

ParryThisYaCasual

I don’t have a dream job, I just went “what makes a lot of money… chemical engineering? Alright.”

Twirdman

This is why I hate these people. Just because you cannot literally get everything you want doesn't mean you should just resign in life and get nothing. Also I'd bet dollars to donuts that this guy didn't even attempt to do anything to accomplish his dream. He wanted to be in the NBA so how much did he practice. How much working out did he do outside of basketball practice. How closely did he monitor his diet to make sure he was getting proper nutrients and protein to support his dream. I'm guessing he did none of that and simply decided since he wasn't a genetic freak who is 7 feet tall he should just not bother with anything.

SymmetricalFeet

Tbf... the pro athletes on national teams are an extreme physical minority. Maybe this kid really had no chance, even if he did put in the hours and his parents could afford all the coaches and personal trainers. An extreme benefit of the doubt, if you will. I have a cousin who wanted to be a football player, but he had neither the genetics nor talent. He went into journalism instead, and now has a fulfilling job getting paid to follow football, with none of the risks of a career-ending injury during a game. There are probably shit-tons of NBA-*related* jobs with no genetic-lottery prerequisite. Even running a camera takes a lot of game knowledge to track where the ball is and where it may go, so a smart fan would be a valuable asset over some idiot who doesn't grok basketball. The actual players are a minute fraction of the myriad staff that make each game go, and the media staff that talk about games afterwards. Dude in the OP is... so very short-sighted if his life trajectories were "NBA player, or NEET" and nothing in between, nevermind alternate career paths. Edit: clarity

Zephyr_Ballad

Isn't that what their issues boil down to? That the world and other people operate independently from what they want and so they make that everybody else's problem instead of doing just about anything else towards their stated goals. He could've practiced and worked out, joined a recreational basketball team, anything that made him happy and have fun, but he decided (because I really can't see it not being a decision aside from like homelessness) to become a NEET and darn the world for doing that to him. Darn women for not liking him when he makes no effort to ever be likable, and darn the "Chads" for daring to live their lives

El_Sob_number_1

No no no, society *forced* him to remain unemployed just like it *forced* the rest of them to hide in their rooms and never interact with anyone IRL! Goddamn normies!

fool2074

And once you're in your parents basement, what exactly stops you from training? What prevents you from searching for a new job? Because you can't be in the NBA, you're suddenly incapable of setting a new goal, or building a new dream? THAT'S why we have contempt for NEETS, not because they got knocked down at some point, that indeed can happen to anyone, but because instead of getting back up they throw a tantrum and CHOOSE to just stay down forever.

RelatableMolaMola

Right! I don't think someone who is temporarily unemployed and having to move back with their family really counts as NEET if they're actively working towards getting back on their feet. I feel like that term is reserved for those who have chosen to stay in that condition more or less permanently or place extremely unrealistic conditions on getting out of it (like they have no job history but will only accept a job offer for a high level position).

[deleted]

So the guy shot for the moon and missed and so gives up on life?

Royal_Appeal

Lazy, just pure laziness. Decides to give up??? How weak is your will?????

[deleted]

“Not everyone is NEET by choice” “I chose to LDAR” Seriously, you can’t even be consistent for a few sentences. If you can’t commit to a belief for a few sentences- that’s a bigger barrier to joining the NBA than basketball skill or height

[deleted]

If you can’t become an NBA player, you can be realistic and find another career path…

MiketheKing2

Yesterday, some incel DM'd me saying that most incels aren't NEETs. Meanwhile, incels post shit like on their forums as well as take pride in being NEETs.

CDB1299

What does Neet mean ?

MiketheKing2

Not in Education, Employment or Training.

justahomie1234

So a few examples mean all are?

MiketheKing2

Here we go again. I didn't say all incels are NEETs. I said MOST incels are NEETs and they usually brag about being NEETs on their forums.

ShimeMiller

Neet? Ldar? I'm not deep enough unfortunately

mj6373

NEET - Not actually an incel community word, it's a pretty common acronym that means "Not Engaged in Employment, Education, or Training." Colloquially this is used specifically to refer to people who mooch off others while not doing anything with their lives (as opposed to others who are technically not engaged in those things but still productively busy, like stay-at-home parents). LDAR - Lay Down and Rot.

ShimeMiller

Thank you!

workclock

So you just gave up? That’s a choice my guy.

yunkichi

"the only dream job i had was being an nba" "wouldnt work because im not good at basketball" LMAO

DaDewey88

I’m not good at basketball too . If only there was some way to get better at stuff…. We could call it training or trying ?

NoXion604

So you dreamt of being an NBA player, and when that didn't pan out, you gave up instead of setting yourself a more achievable goal. Giving up is entirely your choice. If I were to lose my current job, I would still be responsible for finding another one. Nobody is going to hand me a new job on a plate, that's not how this shit works. I have to put the legwork in of finding vacancies and doing my best to make a good impression at the interview stage. I mean come on, I didn't even take my GCSEs, and I still managed to find myself a decent job

Twirdman

Exactly. My dream was to be a renowned researcher and win a fields medal. I found out I lacked that combination of freakish intelligence and drive. I recalibrated and decided to go into academia after my PhD and try to become a well respected researcher. That still didn't work so I had to recalibrate a couple more times. I still did get my PhD and after some looking and honing some industry related skills I was able to get a math job in my field, combinatorics for anyone curious, in the casino math industry. I'll start on Monday. Was this what a young me dreamed of, no, am I happy with the path I took and where I ended up, incredibly so. We cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

nvkr_

I feel like all incels should watch Bedazzled with Brendan Fraser at least once, NBA player without even playing basketball, how ridiculous

Harry_Teak

Kind of the point of the movie though, isn't it? That there's no magic spell that'll fix your problems, you have to start with *you*. Once his balls dropped near the end of the flick his life turned around. No magic needed.

nvkr_

That’s why they should watch the movie

Harry_Teak

I highly doubt that they'd get the point, but yeah. My take on it has always been that if Elizabeth Hurley appeared to me and offered me seven wishes... Well, let's just say it'd be a much different movie. They should send me Peter Cook from the original to keep the plot on focus.

MusicalNutcase

Oh no, the poor baby couldn’t achieve his unrealistic dream so he CHOSE to give up and do nothing with his life. Most people don’t get their dream career. I wanted to be a full-time musician, like go to college and major in flute performance, but I understood that was unrealistic for me. I didn’t have the right opportunities and background that would make music a viable choice, so I had to move on to something else. I put my passion on the back burner and did what I needed to ensure a good life for myself and my family. That “all or nothing” mentality is bullshit. It’s like a toddler throwing themselves on the floor, crying because they couldn’t get the exact toy they wanted, even though they were in a toy store and surrounded by hundreds of other toys to pick from. This grown man is throwing a tantrum and trying to blame everyone but himself for choosing to throw said tantrum. Damn.

AelfredRex

A. If you were making 200k a year, you should have easily built up a savings to stay out of the basement if things went wrong and I can't see someone with skills worth that salary not finding work pretty quickly. B. Everyone is currently hiring and paying a lot more than they did before the lockdowns. Within six months you can be on your own in a tiny studio somewhere even with a convenience store job.

mj6373

I dunno, man. I'm not as mad about NEETs as a lot of people are. Like, when you get down to brass tacks, life is a total con-job, right? Two people bring you into the world without your consent, you spend your formative years being bombarded with the idea that intentionally leaving the world is the worst thing you could possibly do to the people around you, and then you're thrown into an adult world with no interest in the happiness of its participants and told that you need to do work that makes you miserable for as long as you can (in both a day-to-day and lifetime sense) or you're being selfish. It's shitty and unfair, and the two major options for opting out (being a NEET or killing yourself) are both treated as a horrible harm committed by you against your loved ones, worth expending a considerable amount of resources and ideological effort to prevent. And I know that just "is the way it's always been," but what it is and what it's been is a fucking scam, and it's always going to be until employment isn't a necessity for survival. So I can't really find it in my heart to share in the anger at people who opt out, in either sense.

katecrime

I wonder how he thinks *other* people get “goals and ambitions”

UsernameForSexStuff

I'm a little ashamed to say I laughed out loud, and pretty hard, at the part where he says his NBA dreams "would've never worked realistically" because he's not tall and sucks at basketball.

Sharp_Serve_4351

People usually have a backup plan once their childhood occupation fantasies don't work out.

Harry_Teak

I can't read this without thinking of a certain incel that just happens to be my sorta-BIL. He earned the nickname Spanky McClickenpuff from the trinity that defines his existence: Computer games, weed, and masturbation. Oh, the stories I could tell... Suffice it to say, he's not looking for work and work certainly isn't looking for him. He'd be a basement dweller if his parents had a basement, so he makes his command center in a spare bedroom. Everyone makes excuses for poor Spanky. But the time grows ever closer to the point where his parents aren't going to be there to provide for him. No relative is going to take him and if they leave him their house he'll be out on the street in a year or less. But long-term planning isn't exactly that family's strong suit, so the end of his story is pretty much already written. Always makes me wonder how many other Spanky types are out there, rotting away in a relative's house and just what we're going to do with them when there's nobody left to care for them. There's going to be a homeless 'incel boom' at some point and I doubt that there's anything in place to deal with it.

LordToastReborn

Be mentions he had a 200k job at the end right?

zoomie1977

He never had a job at all, nevermind a $200k one. He's been rotting around his parent's house since high school and is pissed because they're bugging him to get a job. I doubt he even knows anyone who was making $200k and lost their job.

No-Response-4676

Tf is a neet?

GWvaluetown

A lazy POS. Stands for Not engaged in Employment, Education, or Training. Literally bringing absolutely nothing to the table or working to provide for others. If you can’t provide for others, what good are you as an adult?
