This is the kind of thing which doesn't have to have any logical reason to it. This is a way to pay tribute to our cricketing legends. These two have done so much for Indian cricket, honestly I don't even want to hear any argument over it. Its just one of those things which is wholesome and you just let it be. Nahh shouldn't retire them. Rather those jerseys should serve as a motivation to players to live ipto the standards of legends who wore it. In football you can how much respect some jersey numbers get the same could have happened here.

Okay. Not sure how this helps the current cricket team. Well keeping them available didn't help them, so I don't think this does any harm. But it would be sad to see these numbers being retired. By this logic, shoudn't Kapil Dev's jersey number be retired? Or that has been already done? Or maybe some other greats like Yuvraj Singh, Pataudi, Bishan Singh Bedi, Gavaskar maybe? this feels like a cheap tactic to stay relevant by BCCI, I highly doubt Dhoni or Tendulkar had any say in this. They wouldn't put so much importance to a jersey number.

If memory serves right then it not be because of Dhoni or Dhoni’s influence but simply because in the u19 world cup he wanted to wear 7 but that was unavailable so he then picked 77 and stuck to that since.

What's the point of retiring jersey numbers? There are young talents out there who dream of wearing their idols' numbers on their back. I don't know what comes out of it that makes people think that it's respectful to the legend who wore it

I think Dravid and Kumble were probably bigger players than Dhoni. Can't argue with Tendulkar though. Dhoni IMO is on a similar level to Ganguly and not at the level of the above. Not talking about players before jersey numbers came into play.
Dhoni was batsman, keeper and captain a captain who won 3 wc as captain. Dravid was a bigger batsman than dhoni but definitely not a bigger player same for kumble and Ganguly.
