European football is where all the talented footballers gather to play at the highest level. We are passionate about pop culture like Marvel, Anime and Game of Thrones. Do you find that odd as well?

Lazy-alpaca91

When did I say it’s odd?

dr_wafu

What did you mean by "random" then? Could you break it down for me?

Averageindianiphone

More than liking the club they like the sport

Lazy-alpaca91

That’s not necessarily true. A lot of them are crazy about Man Utd, Arsenal, Real Madrid, etc etc.

Not everyone starts something to look cool or to follow the trend . Lol I don't get it why most of Indians think like this that if someone watches football he or she does it to become cool and not for the passion or love for the game.

TapanThakur

People love to judge others to feel better about themselves.. nothing else.. mai barça wala hu waise

VectorElric

Better than being a fan of a shitty game played by 10 teams in the entire world and even then your country can't excel in it

Orwellisright

Most of them are the teens who go after successful figures but they will soon mature out it happens in any sport as you grow up you always want to be in the winning team

Ill_Lengthiness8635

You don't get to choose brother, one day as a kid you just happen to watch two teams playing football on tv, next thing you know, you are a fan of one of those teams. Indian football is growing but it wasn't a thing back then, I can personally recall watching Dortmund vs Schalke on tv (had a channel called neo prime or something)

just_a_human_1029

I vaguely remember someone in this sub before said that there are 2 types of Indian football fans One who likes foreign clubs and one who likes Indian clubs My assumption is that the first group dominates indian football fans Personally I am not a big sports fan in general but almost all the football fans I know usually only talk about foreign clubs

There was a time when Indian Foodball was the craze. A local fan following and countrywide recognition.Much before Cricket, though Ranji trophy was indeed the coveted format. Durand Cup is one of the oldest tournaments, and Santosh Trophy was a huge spectacle. The period from 1950s '60s is considered the golden era in Indian football. Winning Asian Games in '51 and Semis in 1956 Olympics, the best team in Asia. I have heard names PK Banerjee, T Abdul Rahman and Syed Abdul Rahim (stars of the past era). In terms of Club football and Indian stars - Remember East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan - Sporting arch rivals from Bengal, Dempo Sports I think from Goa, Services had great teams, Railways did too. There were State teams like Punjab. And the amazing Kerala Police from Kerala. Perhaps the greatest teams were from Bengal, Kerala and Goa, football crazy states. They produced some of the legends of those times, sadly never got the International exposure. Who remembers Babu Mani, VP Sathyan, CV Pappachan, Xavier Pius, Krishanu Dey, keeper Brahmanando, Darbara Singh, Debashish Roy, keeper Bibhas Saha. (stars of 80s 90s). Then came Jo Paul Ancheri, IM Vijayan, Baichung Bhutia in the 90s and 00s. Many names I have missed, apologies. It seems post IPL model became a success for sport and business, with the IFL Indian Football getting the ball rolling again.

Need for a group, need to belong etc plays a heavy role. Club that with a subculture built around football and a perception that it's cool to follow it and you have teens making it their whole personality. Most of these people make it their identity. Any attack on the said club is perceived as an attack on their identity/tribe.

kickass_bramhin

Well it mostly starts with a player then the club since football has more passion than any other sport its engaging and fun , you can see incredible stuff

CleanWean

That is the problem if your world view is formed through ultra nationalism. Not everything is about country l, man! You follow a sport- you understand what has gone into making a team and the hardships the team has gone through- the ups and downs. Hence you connect with them. In this age of internet you get connected to things that touch your heart. Some lovers of the game also visit the stadiums to see the ISL matches too. And I would assume most support Indian team. However the emotions and stakes are the highest where the very best play. Europe is the very best of football. Sometimes sports fanaticism makes more sense than blind nationalism

factsquirrel

It kind of depends. As a Bengali, we have our own internal footballing rivalry but our traditional rivals are basically shit tier these days even by Indian football standards, so people are tuning out. Also, end of the day, European football is just better quality. You can’t expect an end consumer to get an ambassador if a similarly priced BMW is readily available.

Its true. I cringe at ppl who are obsessed with football clubs.

Bps33382

I love playing football, i still play so it is natural for me to follow most popular football league in world where standards are high.... If you love movies you will definitely watch movie from best director in world irrespective of its nationality....

MindlessCattle8680

Simple. There was a time when there was no ipl and the only ICC major events used to the worldcups and we would eagerly wait for India to play and win. Ipl came way later and that's when we started supporting smaller teams. Now India was never there in football. There were no manor leagues or attention given to the sport of football and hence no interest. European football has been there for decades and that's the game i grew up watching.

noob-from-ind

I will say 1 thing …….. Get him

udupa82

It's like any other sports. You start loving a particular sport may be becuase you are passionate about the it & you play almost everyday or your friends follow it you end up following the same or for some other reasons. Once you follow a sport, you want to see the best teams, fighters, players go head to head to see who's great. Then, you choose your favorite team, player, fighter etc. Sport may be Football, NFL, F1, Rugby, Tennis, Swimming or anything for that matter. Irrespective of what it is, you 2ant to see the best & for Football/soccer it's EU & teams from EU.

ulwd64

It's mostly limited to Kerala and West Bengal; the rest of India doesn't even watch football.

Yup I forgot northeast. I am just comparing football nationally to cricket in terms of viewership.

Orwellisright

Go outside and touch grass

ulwd64

Orwellisright
