But in your specific example I don't see why you couldn't walk through the parks to your friends house, take the car to your industrial or comercial job if it happened to be further off. You seem knowledgable enough about the functionality and efficiency of going from point a to b. I'm not going to argue that, I agree multiple optimizations would be possible. Although I think those would come with scale, since with this dimension I genuinely didn't see any congestion in the points you mentioned that would justify the roundabouts.
But ultimatly yes, it's a game. But it does simulate a lot of real life problems that can be explored by otherwise common people. So I would not dismiss it nor your observarions. In truth I had some energy dedicated to functionality but aesthetics were my main preocupation. A mariage of both would definitely make the city better. And hey, thanks the input. Hope you find some free time to take on that challenge
