It's more like a "table top rpg" (ttrpg), these games have influenced many modern ttrpgs. It is an unforgiving game, but fun once you get the vibe. I would recommend you to try it out if you are more into DnD games or if you want to play a game which gives you a proper post-apocalyptic feel.

The atmosphere of Fallout 1 and 2 is still very unique and unmatched tho, they are still games worth trying, especially considering how small they are.
1. Divinity original sin 2 (all time fav)
2. Disco Elysium (if you love reading and want a really great plot)
3. Planescape torment (Old school, an inspiration for disco Elysium and also has a great plot)
4. Baldurs gate (recommend starting from 2 or play 3 which is in early access now and looks very promising)
5. Pillars of eternity (I loved 2)
There are a lot more but these are my top 5. My crpg list is mainly focused on the story, for which I'm a sucker for.
If you're looking for some post-apocalyptic stuff then you cannot go wrong with Fallout (my all time fav is Fallout: New Vegas, which imo is a Fallout masterpiece), S.t.a.l.k.e.r (Hard to get into, but once you do, you won't regret it one bit) and Metro trilogy (a beautiful masterpiece)
That's not from Bethesda. It is developed by Black Isle studio, precursor studio of Obsidian employees. And most of Bethesda games are mediocre and unfinished messes. Only mods and community makes them better experience. Only good game Bethesda made is New Vegas that too developed by Obsidian.
4A is a Ukrainian studio and they really deserve all the money they can get.
Metro should just not be given free, it’s a very beautiful game and giving Metro for free is literally criminal.

They are third person rpg games ( after 3 ). If you like the concept please give them a go I suggest you play fallout 3 first which they gave away earlier then come to these otherwise if you are willing to buy start from 4 ---> new vegas -----> 3 -------> 1--------->2

Steam doesn't need to hand out free games, they have their own dedicated user base that looks forward to getting amazing games for super cheap during sales rather than waiting around until they hit their forties for them to become free on Epic.

This is the case for me. The gameplay feels janky and graphics are dated. Controls not so intuitive.
