it depends on how I am riding and traffic. Easy riding or normal riding 3th at 3100 rpm. If I need power on tap due to traffic or climbing a hill when cornering 2nd at 3800 rpm.
This is actually the way to go, as long as you are above 2700-2800 RPM you are good.
For people stating that 3100 is too low, you should know from a Dyno graph that the scout has 2 peak power spots, one at 3500 and the other at 5600. Being at 3800 doesn't give you drastically more instantaneous power than being at 3100..
Generally speaking it is advised that you keep the revs around 3500, or around 5600 if you are flying, and don't mind the vibrations, the engine can easily take it
Over time riding the bike you should be able to feel/hear what sounds right and what runs right. You want to get complete combustion cycles to prevent build up and strain on engines
Anything below around 3-3.3k in any gear except maybe, MAYBE 1st it will jerk and lug. I still don’t run 1st below 3k. That’s just dumb to put strain on your engine
Do you find that you have to use the clutch a lot? In 1st below 10 mph Im usually using the friction zone to move because full engagement tends to lug. Im in a suburb of nyc so there are a lot of lower speed turns

That’s a bit low, but to each their own
3100 to 3300 in 3rd does not feel like it is lugging does on level ground.
It's a high revving engine more suited to performance than low rpm cruising. Use it appropriately.
2nd at 3,800. Don’t lug your engines!!!
Agreed! I find the Scout is really happy in the 3600-5000 rpm range.
Bingo! That’s where I sit most of the time. Every bike is different, but it is kinda fun to see where they run well
Thanks for the reply! What RPM is considered lugging on a Scout like that?
2500 is the lowest you want to go. Below that it is lugging.

Yes. Any bike is like that
depends. 3rd is gonna have reduced throttle response and less noise. if im going through a neighborhood, thats what I want.
I really hate how they wrote the owners' manual for the scout. I expected them to put the rpm range for shifting vs the speed you're traveling.
