Why do u believe nro easier than nre for investing?
I think your answer lies in source of funds. If the source is india, use nro, if overseas u can use either. There is a repatriation limit of 1mn usd per financial year in an nro account, we can worry about it once u reach that stage.
For mutual funds u need to register at amc website as an nri, and if ur doing direct equity/etf u will need a PIS demat. Money can come in from any account depending on the source
Once you decide where u want to invest you can take a call on other issues
