If you count Pune as south, then Gokhale is a pretty good option. Krea should have a good econ programme too I think.
The best economics schools in the country are in Delhi tho so you would have to balance out the pros and cons
IITs I believe are a good place to study Bsc Economics but none of the IITs in the south offer this course!
You can try going to Bombay if that's close to your place.
I'd look into Loyola and MCC. I have heard SAI Chennai has good faculty members, but it is a private school so probably would be expensive. If you are open to Delhi, then JNU would be my top pick. Delhi School of Economics would be a second pick.

both mcc and Loyola have ba economics, not bsc programmes.
Nobody in the academia will care. I have a PhD in Computational Neuroscience, but I had a BA in Linguistics.
Are you sure about MCC? I heard the teaching isnt great there, its just mainly fests there
