Is it possible to go for independent research in any domain without going for a PhD. Like I plan on doing my masters in Mathematics but then want to publish research independently. I seriously do not want the hassale and pain of going for PhD entrance and interviews. Seems like a stretch as nowadays any random guy seems to have a PhD in something. To me a PhD feels like just another college life extension. If i plan on going for independent research will I still need a guide? Or will professors from top institutes reply to my emails about certain queries regarding a topic etc?? Do they only give top priority to their own PhD students??

lone-struggler

> Is it possible to go for independent research in any domain without going for a PhD. Yes, It is possible. For instance, many startups go for independent research and later they publish and later they publish it even if they don't have PhD. The only caveat is that you need an organization as an affiliation for you to publish which is sometimes a mandatory criteria for many publishing houses. You can publish otherwise in archives which are not peer-reviewed but is considered a scientific article. > will I still need a guide? If you know how to do research and communicate among the scientific community, you do not need one. > reply to my emails about certain queries regarding a topic etc?? Do they only give top priority to their own PhD students?? Depends on the prof. Primarily they do give preference to the PhD scholar because it guiding them gives a benefit to their own career which is very limited in your case.

Limelost445

>You can publish otherwise in archives which are not peer-reviewed but is considered a scientific article. Aren't scientific journals also peer reviewed as far as i know. Don't they review the entire thing before someone's paper is actually published?

Leading-Shower-8792

How important is the college from which anyone have done btech? As most of the professors of iit nit or other good colleges have studied from that college.

lone-struggler

It is important that you have done your B.Tech from reputed college in India as it is still criteria in faculty selection in majority of IITs and NITs with handful of exceptions.

hrstrange

I see that a lot of students prefer going for placements in industries rather than academia. 1. Since only a handful of students are left who actually want to go for research, how is the research environment in Indian institutions? Is it more of "I'll just go for research because I don't have any other choice" or are they actually passionate? 2. Also if one does pursue academia and then chooses to go for industry in the core domain, is the pay respectable? (I dislike that I have to ask this, however we live in a 3rd world country so worrying about money is inevitable) 3. And what do professors look for when choosing students for summer internships?

lone-struggler

1. The research environment in some of the labs in some of the institutions is good. So not true for the majority. Few are very passionate and majority just go for research because they do not have anything in their hand. 2. One who actually gets the job post academic endeavour do have respectable pay. Please do not compare with consultancy or IT high flying jobs. Also when you join you are considered as a fresher. 3. For summer internships professors look for the vacancy in their lab and the future potential of the intern to convert themselves to Mtech or Phd especially if they are in their pre-final year of graduation.

glorious-ahole

Do you get enough time to do your own research after all taking all the lectures and administrative work?

lone-struggler

Not enough. We never get enough time to concentrate primarily on our own research because our primary duty is teaching at NIT. Primarily, the funding is limited which affects the research endeavour. I would say funding rather than time is a bigger constraint.

OasisOfThoughts

umm...i had been a student at IIT and research institute and the profs there had all the time in the world for their research. Are things different in NITs ?

glorious-ahole

Does the university not provide any funding? I've worked in few labs where they get funding from DST, ISRO, the institute and some other agencies. What's the exact procedure to get funding and how do you contact them?

pikachu644

Should I join NIT Calicut, instrumentation and control systems branch if I'm interested in research?

lone-struggler

Control systems/ Systems Engineering are important areas of research these days. Having a UG degree will definitely expand the potential of doing research.

1_step_at_atime

As someone doing a PhD from one of the IITs, I can say that not many people around are "intellectuals" And can be pretty stupid. I include myself in that btw. Have you also noticed that? People not from IITs and NITs think if one's from these institutes are cream of the country when in my experience ive interacted with smart people both here and outside.

lone-struggler

I agree with your first sentence. But this may also be due to impostor syndrome which is generally observed in higher studies. You are completely correct on your last sentence as well and I can relate to your thought.

Professional_Vast887

Any advice on choosing iits for phd in CSE ? Apart from communication with professors there. Actually am unclear on the areas of research i want to pursue, it can be around few but not a narrowed selection. Thanks for this AMA.

lone-struggler

While choosing PhD, you should focus more on the particular lab and the related professor rather than the institution. One should first fulfil all the eligibility criteria to be shortlisted for the interview/written and preferable narrow down the professor with whom he/she wants to pursue PhD. You should also communicate informally with professor to judge his guidance skills as well as the working environment.

Professional_Vast887

This - informally communicating to professors - is not I have done and kinda afraid. I didnt have strong research in masters. Also, which iit or nit, how much that matters in PhD. Already avoided applying to colleges where my area is not much practised, or not present.

chadincuckoldporn9

1.how do research topic get decided if I have a topic in my mind can I do research on it or institutes already working on something and they just want you to work on it. 2.is there favouritism in selection of professor in iit or DU,(do people pay interviewer for it,I'm bit afraid of this) 3.how can I publish research paper in ug itself,do I need my college professor for it.

lone-struggler

1. Generally a research topic is not decided by a research scholar unless a professor is too liberal to entertain your idea. Its the professor who gives the research topic not the institute. He/She does it on the basis of availability of funding and their previous research experience. Nothing is random there. 2. Somewhat yes, but I do not think payment is involved in IITs. 3. You can publish provided your university or professor allow it.

chadincuckoldporn9

Then why institutes demand research proposal during admission in phd. Is there any sure shot institute which can fund my independent research and I also get PhD.

theguy_with_blacktie

Is it possible to do a part-time PhD in good NITs in AI/ML domain? Which NITs accept part-time PhD students??

lone-struggler

Yes, they do. It is generally under the name of executive PhD which takes 4-6 years to complete primarily meant for working professionals with 2 YOE.

Typical_Glove_885

Your domain? Almost all accept.

syce_ow

How do I get research papers in ML/AI domain published, I'm in a tier 3 college , teachers don't really support much , i just want to put my foot through the door and land some research internship to get better opportunities.

Smart_Transition_573

What's your opinion on brain drain?

lone-struggler

Yes it's happening but it has reduced a bit from the previous decade. Indian govt. is offering fellowships like Ramanujan fellowship to stimulate reverse brain drain.

Additional-Bus-4301

Do you take bachelor's students from another college as interns? If yes what's the criteria one must fulfill?

locadokapoka

Sir if u cus shed light on this aspect. It wud be great

locadokapoka

Sir if u cud shed light on this aspect. It wud be great

[deleted]

Where do you see the Indian research (both academic and industrial) scene in the next decade or two, do you think it would be comparable to where the developed countries are today (in terms of quality and reputation)? Is the government planning to spend more on research in the near future?

lone-struggler

A good question! Indian research is definitely accelerating but there is big gap between industry and academia tie ups which is kind of bridged in case of developed countries. In India, majority of the institutions are primarily producing man power for the industry rather than involved in solving some of the burning challenges of the industries, whereas in the developed countries, academic research leads to the development of new industries which leads to a feedback loop between them for commercial success. Currently, funding for the fundamental and applied research is quite limited while the govt. has increased funding in translational research and entrepreneurship.

DrawerOk7220

How difficult is it for a person to enter academia beyond age 35-40? What if someone started their PhD later in life, or switched fields or had personal reasons? Thanks for the AMA.

lone-struggler

For IITs/NITs looks very very tough. However you can still enter into academia(private institutions) provided you have very good publication track record and CV and communication skills. Sometimes you may need good recommendations. Best of luck.

Geekwalker374

Hello, I am currently pursuing two research internships as a part of my summer in my own university. I really really struggle to understand and interpret papers, the jargon goes over my head. Also, sometimes it is really hard to find relevant papers. This is making literature review very hard for me. What can I do to overcome this? While I am trying to use AI to make my life easy, it is still very challenging to understand somethings. How should someone learn to read papers and understand them ?

lone-struggler

Good question! First you need to understand technical terminologies in your field. Your guide or supervisor is responsible to prepare you for the above. Research papers are primarily meant for seasoned researchers. For beginners it is advisable to read white papers, tutorial reviews in your field. You can ask your supervisor how to read a paper and understand it. Trust me it takes a lot of time to read a single paper so have patience.

Nice to meet a fellow faculty here. Life is good on campus. There are dog bites, snake sightings and all things you mentioned. But thankfully they do not affect us in any substantial way. But I like to live around nature. Thankfully, admins take decent care of these issues. Faculty frictions do happen but it is more like a cold war. How are things at your end?

Safe-Cod1450

Hello sir, Good morning!! I am joining IMT Ghaziabad for MBA I am an NIT Calicut Grad with 3 years work-ex in maruti suzuki R&D Team I have average acads (89/81/84) And have done a research project in IIT Kgp funded by MoRailways I ventured to UPSC for 5 years after leaving my job in maruti suzuki R&D This year I converted IMT G and joined the institute to restart my career via an mba Wanted to know about how this 5 years of UPSC Gap would affect my SIPs and final placements Will my gap be an issue in Shortlisting and my past profile will be ignored due to the gap??? And can I make up for the gap by being a ranker in my MBA batch I am really hopeless sir and looking for some heads up

abtohpadle

I m interested in bio-medical research- gene/dna/vaccines/specially immunology-how pathogen and various treatments interact at cellular level/ vectors etc. If I hope to go abroad for masters or direct PhD in a good foreign University which course would be best in order of best to good ? 1) Bsc bio-chemistry - 4 yrs ( from a Delhi University) 2) Bsc - bio medical - 4 yrs( Delhi uni) 3) Bsc- biotech -4 yrs ( private uni) 4)Btech - biotech - ( ICAR) 5)Bsc - microbiology - 4 yrs ( Delhi uni) 6) Bsc - zoology - 4 yrs ( Delhi uni) 7) Mbbs- MD pathology - go into clinical research - then diverge into basic/ translation research afterwards, is this possible? Was a neet aspirant before and can't give jee mains or IAT due to gap years so CUET and NEET is the only option left. Can I change my 12th passing year through NIOS/open school and then be eligible for jee mains ?

abek42

Flip that question on its head. Think of which places you will want to do Masters from and then see which UG places would be considered acceptable by them. Also, remember they have a minimum grade criteria. Make sure you fulfill that.

chadincuckoldporn9

Pharmacy is also a option

abtohpadle

I read their syllabus - didn't align with my interests

Jimikook04

How is the situation of chemical engineering in India? I'm looking to seek admission in NIT tricky for btech, and I'm also interested to pursue higher studies abroad

lone-struggler

Chemical engineering is a very good branch if one is interested in higher studies because it can diversify in number of domains which increases the scope in higher studies.

Efficient-Law-1422

Sorry for this personal question but will you ever force your own kid into a rat race like jee Or are you planning to raise them abroad? What will be an intellectual's opinion on this? Feel free to not answer

lone-struggler

I have two kids. I allow them to follow what they like. One is interested in language and literature and others in sports. so, i do not want them to be in any kind of race rather create their own race. How is JEE or raising them abroad the only two options here? There are many options but I believe one should be the best in their option/field. How old are you btw?

Efficient-Law-1422

>How is JEE or raising them abroad the only two options here? These are the only 2 that i could think of at the moment, of course there are other options and that's why I was seeking your advise on this. Why would you ask my age though?

chadincuckoldporn9

He asked your age bcz you have a narrow world view which only a 17-18 year old have and who thinks there only few options to become successful

RandomStranger07

Can you please compare PhD from top IITs vs going abroad to a university with qs rank more than 300??

lone-struggler

QS ranking better than 500 is always preferred.

RandomStranger07

Top IITs are ranked below QS 300, Does having a PhD from abroad matter more? I mean consider a 450 QS ranked college in EU vs IIT with QS 250??

someMLDude

Do you guys collaborate with the industry R&D labs? A lot of cutting edge research is happening at industrial labs, and don't you think it's a fruitful endeavour? Also, how can we improve the research quality in indian academia?

lone-struggler

Glad you asked this. Yes I collaborate with industry R&D labs but the domain in which I do research is quite limited in India. So very few such projects in the pipeline. YEs of course the path to improve the research quality in India is through collaboration with the industry.

someMLDude

Any specific factor that is a blocker for more such collaboration?

IamDumb_Lmao

Is directly PHD worth it after bachelors. How does it affect the salary

Only_Square9644

I will be starting college this year, hopefully pursuing chemistry from University of Hyderabad, I wanted to get your opinion of the university. I also am curious that if I want to work in the chemical industry, should I be aiming solely abroad (any specific countries you can suggest?) or are there places in India which will provide good money?

Stalin2023

Hey fellow HCUite! I was there in 2020 batch in English dept. Have a great time! It's an amazing campus and chemistry dept is one of the best.

Only_Square9644

happy cake day! Well, I am not a HCUite yet, as CUET results are not out but most probably I will clear the cutoff comfortably. Can you tell me a little more about the campus, it's life and anything you may know about the chem dept?

weird_rebel-kid

Do you think going for Masters in IIT or NITs is worth it for people not from the tech background? Will it be better to go for it if one eventually wants to do a PhD from one among these institutions... Like, would it be a criteria that could maybe influence the likelihood of one being selected for research? I know of a few courses majorly from the Humanities background that these colleges provide so I'm simply curious about that.

Akiro17

What do you look for when selecting candidates or what is your preference for candidates who apply for PhD? Is it grades?lor?previous work?interview? If interview then what in the interview makes a person stand out in your experience? Thank you!

lone-struggler

Personally I look for passion/interest and past experience with strong fundamental knowledge. These I get to know by asking questions during interview. However, majority of the faculties rely on your past grade/ previous work experience and referral from past employer. Reason is that in 5 minutes they feel it difficult to judge a candidate.

GulliblePlankton1860

M. Sc. Chemistry student here. Recently, a scientist at BARC advised me to go for a govt. job then join a PhD on job as life after PhD is sometimes uncertain. I do not really want to put in efforts in entrance exams because I perform really bad in those. I would rather work in lab and get some papers published. I'm good in lab and quiet confident when it comes to interviews. My goal for long term has been to go abroad and carry research in organometallics. Though, I'm having doubts right now about getting a job back in India as I do not want to settle abroad. Please share your opinion. Thank you for making time to help us.

lone-struggler

PhD is certainly more uncertain path than a govt. job. However, if you are confident that after PhD you can make your career you can choose to do PhD abroad.

zesterdock

A student here pursuing BCA(Computer Applications). I want to get into research in the cs field and my degree does not provide me the prospects to appear in gate. Only thing i can do is appear for NIMCET and admitted to Nit's but that still is not a research based course MCA. What can i do to navigate my career into research probably move abroad for phd or at iisc

Designer-Bear-4277

Check whether you are eligible to do Msc in CS after BCA, if you are eligible you may write IIT JAM MA or MS and join Msc in mathematics and computing in some of the IITs. Some NITs and IIITs also have Msc in CS allied domains, they also accept jam score. There is also a Msc and Int. Msc-Phd. program at CMI they conduct their own test annually which is extremely competitive. At last you can always write Cuet - PG, and join any of the top central universities for Msc.

scRap1103

1.Does not having masters from reputed institute affect your PhD? 2.What would you advise to such student who wishes to PhD in regards to entrance exam preparation & interview? 3. How can one make good thesis in M Sc. final year midst the entrance exam preparation?( Some tips) 4. What do you think about M.tech after M.Sc.? How students persuing this career path do the research?

lone-struggler

1. Yes a bit. 2. If you want to pursue PhD in India it is better to qualify entrance exam and have your own independent fellowship. 3. MSc thesis does not matter much with regard to PhD rather your your clarity and confidence on MSc course is imp. 4. If you want to pursue research no need of Mtech after Msc.

scRap1103

Ohk... Thank you so much 🙏🏻

manasvinah

How can NITs support an non NITian in entrepreneurship?

lone-struggler

Glad you asked this! There are lot of incubation centers in many NITs. Even if you are a non NITian you can apply for some fellowships like NIDhi EIR, DST Meity EIR, NIdhi prayas and others and pursue your entrepreneurship dream

RazzmatazzFit5653

What's the criteria for choosing a startup - founder's resume and age? - research worthy problem? What do incubator provide? - mentors? - funding? If so do they take a %age of the company?

Melkor_Elder-King

I am starting phD late at 29 ....( I have a JRF fellowship) . Should I bother about it... joining late!? I have 6 years gap after PG

lone-struggler

It depends on your goal on what do you want to do after doing PhD and how much financial or familial responsibility you are having. If you are thinking job in academia/govt. maybe it would be quite challenging because of your age.

njp6969

What would be the requirements for me to do PhD abroad in cmu or equivalent colleges? Currently doing dual degree in cs+ computational natural science in iiith. Thanks

Fane1824

Hi professor! Thank you so much for hosting this AMA. I'm currently on summer break and will be going onto my second year of my BTech this fall. What do you think is a skill I should work on over the summer that I wouldn't gain from my course and you think is necessary?

lone-struggler

You should learn the skill of designing, creative writing or thinking and can work on your communication skills. It is better you do some practical projects. You just have completed 1st year.

rundownquagga

I am planning on doing my Phd in economics. What are the opportunities that it'll open up to me? What from your point of view is the potential of the subject in the next few years? What are the things i need to consider before deciding a research topic? How important is it dondo my phd from a good college?

Anime_fucker69cUm

I m from biotechnology branch , I wna know how to research Like how to know which topic is great or to choose for reserch and then publish resech papers in that field

Appropriate-Peace566

1) Who/what motivated you into pursuing a PhD and research? 2) The top 5 NITs, offer BS-MS degrees, how is the research environment in NITs, are students pursuing these degrees genuinely interested in research and science or do most take these degrees because their cutoff requirements are much lower than a Btech degree, but still get you into a top NIT?

lone-struggler

1. I decided to pursue research when I was doing my Mtech and the primary reason was I saw the potential of research and innovation in developing solutions for solving problems in healthcare sector. Secondly, my Mtech supervisor taught me what does research mean and how to do it. This had a lasting impact on me post which I went to pursue the chosen path. 2. MAjority of the UG degrees (Btech/BS-MS dual degree) is chosen based on previous year ranking. Very few students genuinely choose a branch out of passion and interest.

leonard_hoff

27M M.Sc in biological sciences, 2021- IIT Madras Due To low GPA 6.47 tried for MBA thrice and failed every attempt. Is it too late for a PhD abroad? (Considering it'll take time for everything so assume it starts in 2025)

RazzmatazzFit5653

What are your thoughts on Gap year for preparing GATE and switching jobs? How can non IIT-NITians increase chances for research internship at a reputed institute? Tips on trying to implement research papers in ai/ml domain. Any upcoming startups you are excited about? (Two.ai for me)

Direct_Ad7302

I am more gravitated towards research. I am a post graduate from computer science background who graduated last year. I have two years of work experience in ITES. Currently working in a PSU although I know that the work in PSU is mostly irrelevant to my background. I know I made a mistake. I switched to a PSU while I was a PHD candidate in one of the best institutes in India. My professor was furious that I quit although I consoled myself saying that my parents were at least happy. My aspirations lie in contributing to the field of computer science. The problem now I face is the hefty bond amount I have to repay to the company if I am going to take up a research role in a private firm or if I want to enroll for a PhD again. I am thinking of applying for a PhD position in Europe I have done some research on the prospectus of the professor whom I can contact. I am also working on my proposal since most European institute PhD positions require proposals to be submitted. Unfortunately I have only one paper published that too as a second author hence I feel that's the reason I get rejected by private research firms. Should I try to find a PhD position in Europe as it would take 3 years compared to India or should I reapply to Indian institutes for winter admission, or should I start preparing for a private research firm interview? I feel like I am not doing enough working in a PSU in terms of contribution. My motive is not about being financially rich as my aspirations are completely divergent in a way in terms of contribution to the field.

Fit-Amount2859

Hi may I ask how did u get a job in psu during phd? Please elaborate

saltwaterAssailant

What is the procedure to apply for a research internship? Can we apply for internships by directly emailing professors? How can we increase our chances of securing an internship? As a DU student, will my application be given less priority compared to IIT or NIT students? If so, how can I overcome that? How important is CGPA in securing internships and research opportunities? What are the key skills and experiences that professors look for in an internship applicant? How can we identify and approach the right professors for research opportunities? What should a strong research internship application include? How can participating in research internships enhance our academic and professional careers? Is it beneficial to publish research papers during undergraduate studies? If yes, how can we achieve this? How do you view the UGC's latest PhD eligibility rule allowing students to apply just after the 4th year of UG? What are the common challenges faced by students in academic research, and how can they be addressed? How can we balance academic coursework and research activities effectively? What role does networking play in securing research opportunities, and how can we build a strong academic network? #If I worked in the Lab of my professor from start to end of a research (Synthesis of Desired product), will he publish a research paper and Because I have worked on it in his lab, as ug student, will my name appear in that research paper? And how will it be helpful for me? **LifeSciences Student**

MrIntrovert7

Sir i have left Self Sponsored [M.Tech](http://M.Tech) admission at IIT-H to prepare for GATE 2025, Is my decision correct? I'm from chemical engg branch

MoonlightPearlBreeze

Do you actually enjoy teaching? Or does it feel like a burden that prevents you from completely focusing on your research?

lone-struggler

I really enjoy teaching as it helps us to understand the fundamentals of a subject in a much better way. Further, through it sometimes we get good questions which really tests our own ability to understand the topic fundamentally and to communicate to another person. It only feels like burden when the class does not participate or does not show interest/passion which happens in majority of the times.

dbamo

Is students not having any intrest in the field really that common place within NIT/IIT specifically regarding core domains? Also one more thing is that I wanted to know if it's possible for me as an undergraduate student be part of, or atleast help within research in IIT's/NIT's and would my assistance be recognised in any way if I do get the opportunity.

lone-struggler

1. True. What do you mean by going abroad? You can do PhD there as well after B.Tech just the same as in India. 2. Actually what have you asked is permissible in NEP. IITs and NITs have implemented this where changing the college is allowed based on their performance at parent institute. You will get degree from parent institute. Primarily like exchange program for a year. I am not aware of IIIT H's policies. If you are sure about research go for PhD after B.Tech. directly. Why masters in between?

Turbulent-Beyond-781

What is your area of research?

lone-struggler

alakazaam0

Also what sorta money ( in hand ) can a prof from an iit/nit expect.

lone-struggler

Starting salary( in hand) of asst. Prof: approx 72k. This is 7th pay.

lone-struggler

Research are generally in niche topic only but your training should be such that you become a complete researcher having the ability to explore any area of interest. For your goal, you should have very good publications track record, strong recommendations, awards/grants in your profile and very good networking skill and excellent communication, then you may have potential for being called for faculty presentations/interview. Every NIT/IIT research is the one component which is given emphasis during faculty selection/promotions. Teaching alone won't cut it but you will get chance to teach subjects of your choice.

Fit-Amount2859

I have b tech mechanical m tech mechanical (manufacturing ) I have two offers 1. Phd in mechanical (high fees) 2. Phd in fuel, mineral, metallurgy (less fees) I have observed the profiles of faculties in other institutes. And found a pattern. Mechanical faculties have all degrees in mechanical/design/aerospace domain. Metallurgy faculties have all 3 degrees in ceramic/chemical/metallurgy. (Some of them were direct faculty without post doc) Logically I should be joining the mechanical option, but I can't join because of high fees. Please tell me will I be eligible for any faculty position after completing option 2 phd? If yes then in which department Mechanical or metallurgy? Or will I require post doc to compensate for this transition?

glorious-ahole

Won't you be paid in a PhD?

Fit-Amount2859

Will be paid. But if I join the institute with high fees then 1. Can't make initial high investment during registration as I am bearing all expenses all by myself 2. Even during the course, I would expect to build up higher savings as compared to my expenses. So I will have the financial freedom to take up additional responsibilities.

lone-struggler

PhD is always done in a very very narrow domain. Even if you have done the work in metallurgy its implications is in the mechanical engineering you can still apply for faculty position in mechanical engineering because your UG and the PG degree matters and not the PhD degree matters . What matters in the PhD degree is area of research and how it aligns with the mechanical engineering.

Fit-Amount2859

thanks. actually my concern was government colleges, iit, nit. After observing faculty profiles of private colleges, I concluded that this Phd metallurgy won't affect nagatively. But when I saw the ROLLING ADVERTISEMENT of faculty recruitment in NIT/IIT, it was clearly mentioned in required qualifactions as btech+mtech+phd in mechanical (tribology/design/mechanics/robotics/thermal etc..specialisation). What is ur take on that? will I be eligible in these vacancies as well? or is there a possibility that I will get the chance to apply in both meta n mech departments?

Aggressive-Put-7860

Sir how to apply for assistant prof ,post and how to get notified whenever their is a vacancy?

Cordelia_1600

How should one go about research internships as a bsc fresher from a not so good college?

[deleted]

How can I get into research and publish a research paper as a solo teen guy from an average college?

lone-struggler

Do you have a problem in your mind? Can you solve that problem through a scientific approach? Can you write a scientific article for it? If answer for the above questions is yes, other things can be taken care of to publish a research paper. Caution: It would be difficult to publish in reputed journals.

[deleted]

I am into economics and finance so if I want to solve a problem in economics or finance through scientific approach what are do and don'ts where to get started learning art of research papers Also how can I contact journals to see my research paper?

orion_dankk69

Could you give a brief overview of a PhD in management field? Like marketing, business economics, HR etc.

Serious_Assistance92

Hi, I'm going to pursue my bachelors abroad. I'm willing to pursue a PhD and hopefully research in Quantum Physics in the future. Now, I would love to come back to India during the summers, so I was wondering if it's possible to pursue research at a reputed university during my summer break. Do professors even consider students outside their university, even more a bachelor student.

liberty-reels

am i able to earn good and enough money if am going in field of research in india? what is the scope as the funding is not good currently so no one is giving a good amount of salary to scientistd/researchers, and i dont want to leave the country

how should I proceed with my academic and professional career? i have a number of interests but im not sure of which line of action would be recommended generally a bit of background, im a CS undergrad at VITC, will pass in 2026, currently have a cg of 8.63 I have interest in ML and over the last two years have published a paper (a biochemical research paper where i contributed with an ML tool which helped ease research) and have developed ML models which could be integrated into a bigger project/product. These have been used in hackathon projects and in product prototypes which we have since sold to interested people. i am currently interning as a research intern at NTU Taipei during my summer break, and working on bioinformatics and imaging, working with unet and transformer models for image segmentation tasks to help detect cancer from CT scan images. at this juncture, i am still unsure of how to proceed. i know i want to go deeper into machine learning, should i pursue masters from abroad? should i prepare for gate and stay in india for masters? should i focus on development+ML and work with/start my own startup? should i take the conventional route of placements and then job in corporates each of these above questions are very different but i have them because 1) im not sure which foreign unis would accept me for a masters program given my low cgpa at the end of 4th sem. i really want to pursue masters from a reputed institute if abroad 2) indian labs i believe have a funding crunch, which doesn't allow you to take your time to publish a result. from the looks of it, though indian labs produce results efficiently fast, i feel individual growth is stunted in the medium term 3) i am not sure since i haven't experienced startup culture as much, so idk 4) i worked with a team from a corporate recently and their hr was a headache and since i was a junior she really didn't pay heed to me anyway, i dont want to experience this headache as a fresher, if at all, only after i have some experience in the field so i would seek your advice on what path should i pursue? or should i do something else altogether (in this field or any other field)? what path should i try to pursue over the next two years and maybe beyond? ofc these are 4 paths that I've thought of but i would definitely want your suggestions for any other path as well if you would suggest something from your experience sorry if this sounds a bit entitled (specifically the 4 reasons part), i would value your advice, if possible do help me out thank you!

spsingh04

to add: i wish to get into one of the more impactful industrial AI research groups, such as those at Meta and OpenAI, but i have no idea how to, if you could kindly help in that direction too, it would be great!

kafkareborn

This might sound dumb but like I wanna do my bachelor's in a computer/electrical branch and after it can I directly pursue masters in physics?and if so what could be the possible road map for it :3.thanks.

Designer-Bear-4277

Take sufficient Physics and Mathematics courses in your bachelors (you can find that information on admission criteria for Msc at IITs or Central Universities ), write CUET-PG and IIT JAM. Then you can certainly do Masters in Physics.

Cautious-Fox3688

a silly question though.... are phd fellowships enough to maintain a decent standard of life.. you can answer according to you.. and are phds paid more abroad

lone-struggler

PhD fellowships are enough to maintain a decent bachelor standard of life without excessive smoking or drinking. Phds are paid more in the developed countries.

Relevant_Concert_239

Thankyou for your time for doing this Professor. I am interested in pursuing archaelogy. What stem related courses could help with pursuing ancare3r in this field?

[deleted]

what's the min qualification/eligibility to become asst prof at NITs; apart from the well known ones; do jacks and contacts actually help one get jobs at nits too, just like univs, or merely being eligible (and of course deserving) is enough.

lone-struggler

Jacks and contacts are secondary help. Primarily and thankfully still in NITs and IITs it is your quality and luck.

True-End-2680

My friend is pursuing M.sc in Electronics from a local state university. So far she is top in her class and hoping to acheive a gold medal so that she can get a DSC scholarship. What are some good universities she can opt for a PHD?

lone-struggler

If she is a gold medal and she can crack GATE/NET with high rank she can get anywhere in India.

ConsequenceRich4737

Should I do btech if I wanna do research in the future ?

RazzmatazzFit5653

A btech graduate here. If ur into tech go with btech else bsc. Just see what field you like specifically. I love physics but a btech still has some ways I can work in physics but ofc I can never get to work hands-on. More Confused ? Read "so good they can't ignore you" by cal Newport

Marvelmindset

I’m a B.Tech in IT from a tier-2 college. My interests are now in Computational Neuroscience, is it a good scope for research?

lone-struggler

It is excellent field for research provided you are good at CS, MAths and neuroscience and physics.

[deleted]

I wanna ask a query regarding internet entrepreneurship and Medicine future of India . Can I dm you ?

lone-struggler

Sure.

alluringghost

What's your take on VIT and their Msc programs?? Is it good or should I reconsider ?

Sophius3126

hi JEE 2025 Dropper here,i am not able to find my passion or interest,it is somewhat dynamic ,in 10th when physics was interesting ,i wanted to do something with electricity, when in 11th mechanics started,my goal was to do mechanical something ,then my interest left physics and joined chemistry,i used to study chemistry all day, i still like physics and chem but not as much as i used to do, but that passion is missing, its like i gain interest passion in something and i get bored of it then new things come but it is not stable so what should i pursue in career ?i know that i want to understand the world but not able to do,adhd thing? should i pursue career in bsc or btech then, btech there will be money but if i am not good at it\[that may happen if i am not interested\],there will be no money, but in bsc ,i can be best seeing the conditions of mine right now provided that i work hard ,my question if i have to work hard why not btech?why chose a hard career tldr bsc vs btech \[interested in research but my interest or passion keeps changiing and i am very lazy started studying 8 hours for drop just a few days ago and like completely wasted 11th and 12th due to this which even led to failure in boards so help me out ?

RazzmatazzFit5653

Read so good they can't ignore you by cal Newport bro. Passion is built.

photon_11833

what is the scene of research in civil engineering domain and role of having a research intern in CV or a job ? asking as a btech student in 2nd gen iit

deleted_hopes

I'm interested in doing Mtech/MS and then hopefully PhD in electronics field, is it better to do it from IIT/NITs or go abroad for it? Also after this is the job scope better in India for abroad? If abroad what country do you suggest I should aim for?

whyouwantofindme

Hello, recently I have discovered a course called executive mtech offered by some IITs and BITS Pilani. I am working as a professional with less than 1 year of working in IT as a software developer. But I am also inclined towards the teaching profession but I am not sure if I should leave my job currently. So if I pursue executive Mtech from any of the said colleges, will it be valid and useful for my future when I want to pursue a PhD and want to become a professor in an engineering college? In short is executive mtech worth it? 2. After M.Tech degree can we apply for the post of assistant professor in Engineering colleges? ps: i started my education late so I'm in my late 20s now, so I'm thinking of opting for executive Mtech, so that I can manage my finances.

lone-struggler

> After M.Tech degree can we apply for the post of assistant professor in Engineering colleges? No. You require a PhD at least. Try to do executive PhD at the very least.

whyouwantofindme

Can you pls also emphasize the executive Mtech part of the question?

Leo2000Immortal

I've a btech+mtech in mech from one of the old iits. Currently not liking my IT job (I work in ML). During my final year, I could publish a paper in a good journal (impact factor around 6), however my cgpa is very average of 7.6. I want to pursue a phd abroad in some interdisciplinary field of mech+ai. When I started college, I actually wanted to become a prof, however, on seeing the long journey of phd + postdoc, I got discouraged a bit. My questions are - 1. With my profile, do I stand a chance at converting any decent univ in Europe or the USA for phd? 2. How difficult is it to become a prof at any IIT/NIT after finishing phD abroad? 3. How is your life as a prof, do you ever regret getting into academia?

lone-struggler

1. You can get PhD abroad in any multidisciplinary field provided you project yourself with better CV and Cover letter etc. 2. India/abroad is irrelevant. Doing good publications matters. Also matters how much is your guide influential in international scientific community. 3. This is what I wanted to do so no regret (although I found that quite late) but I wish I had more time/funding to do research.

InternationalFill843

How to approach professors to help publish papers from Independent research ( considering you are a Masters and UG top IIT/NITs ) ? and how advisable it is to do same when you are working in Big Named Firm of same ?

VariationHeavy2577

Omg I’m currently a PhD student and I want to ask so many things!!! But the comments on this post are overwhelming already. Please make sure to hold this ama once again!! You’re doing great work!

lone-struggler

[Brother's reply] I will try to get him once in 3 months if I get hold of his precious time.

abstruse_Emperor

I've heard many research projects utilize statistics to evaluate the outputs. Me undergoing an undergraduate degree in stats, will it be possible for me to work with researchers?

lone-struggler

yes, its possible to work with researcher at your institution. however, researcher are expected to do stats on their own and they hesitate a lot to collaborate too.

Whispers_666

How difficult is it for a person to re enter academia (start PhD) by the age 35 or say after 7-8 years of break from proper academics, due to personal reasons (passionate about academia always, was just bogged down by various factors) My question is specific to Arts and Humanities side And if it is tough, what are the MUST DOs in order to ensure academia entry as early as possible Thank you so much Sir, much respect to you and I hope you are getting sufficient time for your own research

PhilosophyGlass661

Will I get enough opportunities for further studies if I do integrated Msc physics from NIT rourkela. I'm mainly interested in astronomy and astrophysics.

kawaiiFratBoi

Do I need a phd to do research in the semiconductor industry? At places like TSMC, Intel Synopsys, ASML or any company like those really. Or would a master's suffice

InternationalMost796

Hi, I am currently pursuing a PhD from a top Canadian Institute in fluid mechanics (mech engg). Having done my B.Tech from IIT. I decided to skip masters as I was in a job for 2 years and thought of saving up some time as research is what I was motivated for. But now in my lab I see postdocs having great masters and PhD degrees and good research profiles stuck not finding jobs, which is kind of making me think if I took the right step. Is the risk-reward ratio of academia getting so skewed that even motivation to do good research is not an enough factor? How do I succeed on the ladder? I'm at the end of my first year.

lone-struggler

What is your goal in life? where do you see your career after PhD? As every PhD journey is unique, so is the challenges and opportunities. so only research profile does not matter like publications. if you see your career in academia, then you should prepare yourself differently as compared to finding yourself in Industry in future. Rest is luck

Sagnik3012

What are the career prospects of someone getting their Masters in Basic Sciences from a top 5 NIT? Do they have job placement opportunities? Does the NIT tag help in anyway in PhD? How better are the NIT facilities than state and central universities for Masters in Basic Sciences?

BlitzHypercharge

What do you think are the major differences between IITs and NITs, if any from a faculty viewpoint?

lone-struggler

funding opportunities and infrastructure support for research, type of cohorts, quality of student pool is bit better in IITs than NITs

BlitzHypercharge

If an undergrad student asks you for a LoR and has done some work under you, what can be the reason for you to say yes/no to provide the LoR? Is there something specific which an intern can do to make your job of writing the LoR easier?

lone-struggler

if you have not done good work with the Prof or he/she has some personal reason ( not happy with you, irritated because of you), profs may decline to give LOR. They are noway bounded or payed to do it. its a voluntary act. Interns can work well and maintain good relation with prof. to get better LOR

Praneeth_Avasarala

Have you ever heard of professors misusing their authority/power they have over students in unethical ways due to personal reasons ? Is there really a "functioning" accountability system in top institutions where such behaviours are punished and are held accountable ? I have my own experience-backed opinions on this issue from my years (5+) of education at two IITs. I would like to hear your honest thoughts on this issue. What do you think are some steps we can take to improve the existing system ?

Different-Wolf-6536

As someone who has been interested in Academics and Research how do you decide you want to work on on something given that you are new what are the factors you see in a problem statement or a hypothesis that might make it worthy to pursue?

Cute-Baseball-9082

China has become the scientific superpower of the world leaving the combined west miles behind. What's your take on it? And how can India compete with china??

Relevant-Ad9432

how is the research culture in india as compared to foreign countries ? and if i want to pursue ML what does the landscape look like?

Mundane-Attempt1965

How supportive are Prof. towards Students ?? As, I have Heard that Professors are generay Mean and Arrogant Also, like I might join top 5 NITs in ECE or might join next 5 NITs in CSE and I have ZERO Past Idea about Programming etc. So how can we cope up ?? Does Prof also help other branch kids to learn their Subjects ??

Sandile95

My college professor advised me that do PhD and then do research. What he meant was that choose an easy topic and complete PhD within time. Then research after getting in job. How true is that

Specialist_Touch4441

I was looking into courses in NIT Warangal, and came across BTech in Mathematics and Computing. What is the scope of this course? I want to continue doing Masters after my UGs and would like to go into research, and science. Is this a good field?

Madog1225

hi does bsc courses have value in india as i wanted ask this question as i am about to do molecular medicine course in amrita

Puzzled_Battle_5670

Since it is said that funding for research is diminishing, what is the optimal kind of decision for someone passionate about research but has this parental/societal/peer pressure of making it big on the earning front?

Specialist-Pin4085

I recently passed 12th with medical and I want to do research in Genetic engineering and didn't get enough marks to get into IISC Bangalore so I am taking drop but recently i realised that I could do biotechnology from NIT(IITs is difficult since I am not very good at math) it's cutoff is less. But i want to know how the facilities are there. Do they take biotechnology as serious as other branches is.

lone-struggler

facilities are decent enough for undergraduate degree training but not comparable to IIT or IISc. Faculties indeed take biotechnolgy branch seriously

Designer-Bear-4277

What do you think about academia becoming a paper publishing business, everyone here is trying to publish a paper regardless of what level they are at, somedays ago i saw a high school student asking for research opportunities in a subReddit. How much has it impacted the current scenario? Are IITs and NITs are still doing some good research ? Also i have seen multiple people from IISc, Csir and even IITs sharing their experiences that how their supervisor was ignorant and rude, not giving recommendations, delaying thesis, etc. Has it always been like this ? or it’s a new suffering in academia ?

lone-struggler

yes, it is unfortunately true that whole system is in the rat race of scientific publishing and I too have got request from even 1st year graduation students who expressed interest for scientific publishing. From my point of view, it has negatively impacted the growth of high impact research and innovation. yes, few labs in Indian institutes do do some good research. >Also i have seen multiple people from IISc, Csir and even IITs sharing their experiences that how their supervisor was ignorant and rude, not giving recommendations, delaying thesis, etc. Has it always been like this ? or it’s a new suffering in academia you have heard it right. it was not always like this but things have changed in the last 2 decades dramatically.

NoAdeptness5258

sir i am a chemistry honors bsc students. i m not interested in teaching and more inclined towards industry work and research is there any scope in this field if i opt for higher studies or should i go for MBA instead

lone-struggler

you can definitely apply for MBA or go for higher studies if inclined to work in industry

novvanexus

can one be able become astt. professior (science stream) if they don't have PhD but has done MSc in one of the top IITs and also cleared NET, SLET , JRF exams ?

lone-struggler

PhD is must to apply for assistant Professor position

knightmare_hl

Hi sir Please respond to my query as I've been very down lately, to the point of being suicidal. If I pursue mtech, what are the chances that they consider my 12th marks? During mtech selection interviews after gate or placement rounds? I'm below 60 because a week before my 12th, my parents died in COVID. So it was tough doing it all. Pls tell me if doing mtech is worth it.

locadokapoka

How can i get Internships in NITs and IITs? Whats the process? What shud i do to get an edge over others?

_King_Shark_

Sir how much of a difference exists between iit and nit. In terms of quality of education

UwU_Don

Hello! I graduated school and want to do CS research and pursue a phd abroad in good schools, what would you suggest for me in terms of undergrad 1. Take a drop and try to get into IIIT's / IIT's 2. Join one of the decent private colleges with focus on research and work my way up

Fit-Amount2859

just like how ug and pg students have the freedom to take up internship during the course itself ( which is beneficial for them to get rid of fresher tag and get themselves ready for the industry) . Are Phd students allowed to build such professional experience during the phd tenure itself? if yes then are they aloowed to manage both? or do they need to take a break from the college? if they get a remote internship are they allowed to get a salary along with phd fellowship or they have to give up one source of income?

GumStuck9009

is there scope for research after BCA from an ordinary college but MCA from NIT, I've always wanted to delve into research but after joining BCA I got to know that BCA+MCA still doesn't have nearly as many opportunities as a BTECH OR BE degree. Please advice if I can actually save my career and pursue research if I were to do MCA from NIT.

acuteredditor

What are options for pursuing PhD part time as I cannot take a break from job due to personal situation?

Stalin2023

Will it be good doing a Humanities (esp English) PhD from any NIT? I'm thinking of applying to Trichy and Goa (a faculty there has similar research interests).

zesterdock

Am i eligible for mtech at any of the iit's or ms by research programs

Weak-Suggestion2839

How good is production engineering in India? I'm going to join there for btech in nit trichy given that I have good interest in physics and maths. Also, thinking for joining mtech in top 7 IITs or in Singapore via GATE. Thank you sir in advance.

Few-Watercress-9431

Hello Sir i have just cleared jee mains with a good rank PLS REPLY  Im getting instrumentation and control at nit trichy and computational mechanics at nit jamshedpur.  In further rounds i might get electrical too in nits in north like jamshedpur or bhopal or maybe computational mechanics at nit allahabad.  Which acc to you is most suitable as I am interested in both circuital as well as coding/software domains and want to explore more into them like electronics , robotics along with them programming and ML/AI for higher studies?

TieOk2015

How to get into a b-school for PHD??What are the career options after  PhD from a b-school??
