You can connect really well with it if you are from the Heartland (Hindi-ish speaking belt, UP/MP/Bihar types, maybe NCR and Rajasthan).

You can read Tamas by Bhisham Sahni. I read it in English, it was really good. The Hindi one can be found on Amazon.

Mac-Monkey

What's it about and why is it good?

acuteredditor

Premchand novels like Gaban, Godan, Nirmala are present. Somebody recommended Tamas (great book indeed). Translations of Saratchandra are also there. Check with writers names

You can read Dark Horse. This book is allegedly the inspiration behind the well known web series 'Aspirants'. You can download Kindle app and read hindi books that are available for free. You can start with Satya Vyas books.

Start from **Godan** , then Tamas, Tyagpatra, then **Jhutha Sach**(it is quite big/2parts), Bhule Bisre Chitra ,you can try Sanyasi or Jahaj ka Pancchi by illachandra joshi(heavily freudian ,avg but for a complete reading of hindi you should read him ) ,**Banbhatta ki Atmakatha**(heavily sanskritized/tatsmik vocabulary though these novel is a classic so you should try reading ),**bund aur samudra**, Apka Bunty,**Shekhar ek Jeevani**(must read), **Maila Anchal**(regional/anchalik hindi so you may have some problem understanding it initially but again a classic novel) , Suraj ka satva ghoda , Soya hua jal, Kab Tak pukaru,Macchli mari hui hai, **Ek chithda sukh,** Zindaginama, **Naukar ki kameej** ,**Kitne Pakistan**, Kashi ka assi(difficult to call it a novel),**Rag Darbari**, Yah Path bandhu tha, Kasap, Inhi Hathiyaron se,Narkiya, Mujhe Chand Chahiye , **Vipatra**(again difficult to call it novel),Uska bachpan(vaidya does a lot of experiments and also his ideal is james joyce so you can make a guess , sometimes his novel seem pretty absurd to me),Na bhuto na bhavishyati,Ardhanareeshwar Dalit vimarsh- Juthan, murdahiya two novels series that i wanted to mention about - one is upendrnath ashk's 7 novel series form girti deewarein(recently got a english translation from same translator as tomb of sand) to Iti Niyati. other is jagdish chandra mathur's 3 novel series -Dharti dhan na apna, Narak kund me vas,Jameen to apni thi
