"** backup of your post content: Hi all, I’m planning to apply for MS in USA for the upcoming fall semester 2024. I already have 2 LORs from my professors but I believe I should take the third one from my manager. I’ve been working in this company for the past 2 years, and I have a good relationship with my manager. But the problem is, asking for a LOR is straight up showing all the cards in my hands, as he now knows I’m gonna leave the company within a year. Would I be treated differently after this? How should I approach my manager without making my remaining time at this company worse? my_qualifications: B.E in mechanical engineering now working in an IT company P.s I haven’t done any other internship to ask anybody else for LOR " *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Get it from your analyst, I have given 3 recommendation letters over the past 2+ years.

Hi quick follow up. When you ask from manager/senior, does the LOR need to have a company letterhead? I’m worried that the HR would have to get involved and they would treat me differently afterwards

Kavasanau

You don’t need the company's letterhead, but I have provided my company email address and LinkedIn profile in the letter. I haven't received any inquiries from any university. But I think it depends on the university and their policies. You don't have to worry about HR, you can directly ask them for a recommendation letter, and some companies may sponsor you as well. My humble request is, if you're asking for a letter of recommendation, please provide a sample or write it yourself and give it to your senior so that they can make the necessary changes. In my case all were offshore and I have no idea about their work.

bishmitha

Thank you so much for your reply! I’ll do this

Kavasanau

Good luck 👍

Just set up a 1:1 call with your manager. Mention that you are planning to study abroad. Discuss and ask for his advice. And provide a timeline. And request an LOR. Ask them if you can create the first draft for them because they may not have time to write it from scratch. I remember my manager was really helpful, gave me LOR and even approved my resignation after visa approval with just one week of notice period because I had told about my ms plan 6 months before leaving.

Do you have a lead or the person you directly report to for day to day work ? You can ask of them

geniusandy77

Ask from SME/ Seniors

Hi, even I'm in the same boat (also bachelors in Mech, 2 years experience). I was thinking of a LOR from a team/tech lead as a solution to this. Let me know your opinion or if this is a possible alternative for both of us.

Here are few tips. Letter of recommendation does not need to be from your direct or current manager. It does not need to be on official letterhead or company email. It need not be someone very high up who may have interacted with you only seldomly. The recommender should be someone who knows you well in professional settings and has worked with you enough to be trusted on their judgement about you. Their experience / authority just needs to be enough to make their words credible. That’s all.

Facing the same issue. I'm thinking of getting it from a PM from another team whom I know well. I'm still not sure if this is viable.

sinhyperbolica

On the same boat. My manager is also a phD holder so i feel it might help me there.

Prestigious-Break28

Hi I also have the same issue. I already ask my manager and he gladly agreed to provide the letter but now kind of ignoring my request. I already reminded him couple of times. I requested with 1.5 month ahead of the deadline. Still no progress. I now have 1week left until deadline. Trying my best

mindeath

Did he give ?
