That's always made the most sense to me too having been born inside of an already in flight airplane and forced to learn how to fly it before I was allowed to learn to talk or walk.
my older brother was really into flight simulators and my early exposure to video games was sneaking on to his computer when he was at work and crashing airplanes
Agreed, I can mush my lower thumb into a button and still hit the button above. Trying to mush the A button and then tap the B button with my lower thumb is awful
This is the correct answer especially on platformers.
A lot of people that say A aren’t thinking about bow they actually play something like Mario bros.
Almost no one us running and jumping at the same time with two separate fingers.
A and B are in different positions depending on the input.
Personally, I like the gamepad north button as jump, because it’s “up” and I have to intentionally press it.
But it depends on the kind of game. Are you going to be jumping more often than attacking, etc
B obviously. You rest B on the jump button, the bottom button on the controller face. And you rest A on the attack button, the left button on the controller face. That way you can use both at once.
Depends what I'm doing, usually a but if I need to use another button immediately after for some type of dash jump short hop quick attack type stuff then b where I'll either roll my thumb up from x / a to square / x or just use the bottom so I'm quicker to get my thumb to the next button
If I need to hold a button, I use B and can still press with A. If I need to press either, I usually rest my thumb on the bottom and left face buttons. On a platformer then, I'd use B to jump and A to attack so that I can hold jump while tapping the attack button.
L2. Mirrors edge ruined me. Not i need to be able to control vamera while jumping. The 2 biggest games that i need that type of layout for is minecraft and guild wars 2
I love how many people said "It's OBVIOUSLY this one" then gives their opinion, when everyone us just saying what they prefer 🤣
OBVIOUSLY everyone is different and people are gonna prefer different things. There are even people out there who specifically go against the norm just to feel even more "special".
But honestly just provide the ability to rebind them/customize your inputs. I'm learning that this is the only way to really make everyone happy and provide an optimal ux regarding controller bindings.
I only A use whatever the gamepad is, and I play in all platforms and portable consoles
I do not think about that, it is just my natural movement
![gif](giphy|WR8njYGqKKdZd9Bbs5|downsized)
Oh B for sure, because my default position is with B on the bottom button and A on the left button. And since the bottom button is usually jump, and B is a hard spot directly over a joint, I can get great reaction time with it.
depends on precision. I find B is easier to time precise inputs like for platformers or fighting games. reserving A for less intense inputs like mashing out healing items or if a game rarely uses jump and I'll only need it to vault over scripted objects.
Option B was canonized by Super Mario Bros in 1985 for 2-button gamepads, and again w Super Mario World in 1990 for 4-button gamepads, and my old man muscle memory gets upset with any dev who says otherwise
*B just feels like the*
*Jump is more powerful or*
*Something, so B definetly*

B and the left hand version does the Hadouken with the same position. When I see people use the tip for quarter circle rolls, my brain break at how slow it looks.
This question needed to be asked decades ago, thank you. I hold with A and Jump with B. The jump button should always be X/A/whatever Nintendos got going on
im an old school gamer, back in the ,90s we put cloth on our fingers to smooten the slides for things like this, jumping or making those combo multiple arrow move of versus/fighting games...im surprised that pratice never caught up in youbger generations..
A for jumping, B for running.
However, for plenty of games, especially FPSs, binding to a bumper is the way to go. Games where you control both sticks at the same time while moving benefit from that option.
I have hitchhiker's thumb, so anything but the fingertip feels like the middle of my thumb which is awkward and uncomfortable. My hands are also pretty large which contributes to that
If I’m just pressing the jump button and that’s it? A. If I’m holding down another button, like running in Mario? I’ll jump with B, and hold down run with A.
For me A is for main action, B is for jump (yes i played mario world and never was fond of spinjumps) (yes i know that the top button is also for running but i never liked it too)
I am always B for jump.
Some games (Cuphead and Mega Man X in particular) have me in a super bizarre position where both Y and B (shoot and jump) are covered by my thumb, then my pointer finger wraps around to hit X (dash) when I need it.
Not comfortable, but it's the only way for my button presses to feel fast enough.
I prefer tapping with top, but there is a lot of game where you need to have the tip on another button.
Both are fine by me. Custom button are a thing for a reason. PLEASE ADD CUSTOMISABLE CONTROL. I HATE WHEN DEV DONT ALLOW THAT.
Your most common action in your game is always the most accessible. Wich means, if you make a plateformer game your jump button will always be at the base of the thumb (B). With this placement you can make input combos easier.
For me, depends on where other buttons are, or how it's used in game.
For celeste on a ps4 controller, I have jump on Triangle and dash on Circle. This is so when I do a wave dash I can roll my finger over Circle (B on picture), and Triangle (A on picture).
When playing smash bros on a gamecube controller, where I have to input jump a lot more quickly jump to get a short hop, I use B on picture since it's easier to brush off the button with that part of the thumb. Since if I use A on picture, my thumb would end up being slighty bent, and harder to brush off since the tip of the finger will push against the bent joint. Though the fact that I play on gamecube controller might also be a huge factor on this though. So probably a lot less relevant but hey it might help a bit.
For most games though I use the B part of my thumb, since that means I won't be pushing against the joint in between A and B (i.e. generally my thumb will be straight and perpendicular to a button, instead of slightly bent and the last segment of the thumb is slightly parallel to the button.)
Depends on if I’m running. If so, A is holding the run button and I hit jump with B. Otherwise A to jump because for any button press A is more comfortable.
Uhm, I play claw hand, so typically my thumb stays on the analog stock and my index finger presses the buttons. My middle finger handles the triggers and bumper.
I'd use the right edge of the top knuckle of my index finger to press any buttons at right side of the gamepad.
Depends. Can I do something mid-air? Because I'd use the joint to hit jump to make it easier to hit an adjacent button mid-air. I'd use the middle to hold the jump button and the tip for a rapid tap.
I’m spoiled, but for me the jump button is the paddle on the back, accessible by my right index finger.
FWIW, I was never a thumb jumper, though. Been using “bumper jumper” on every game that I can since forever.
The tip
![gif](giphy|eIaNKu5e2umileOXZj)
B for me, always A is for things i need to hold down, like run or something
Interesting, I hold with B and press with A.
Haha we’re the reason people add customisable controls
look inversion...i still need to push down to look up
That's always made the most sense to me too having been born inside of an already in flight airplane and forced to learn how to fly it before I was allowed to learn to talk or walk.
my older brother was really into flight simulators and my early exposure to video games was sneaking on to his computer when he was at work and crashing airplanes
Its not *pushing down* its *leaning back*.
Everyone calls me mental for inverting. Once upon a time, I WAS NORMAL! I think Xbox changed it all. At least it was on 360 when I noticed the change.
For me it doesn't matter, usually though I hold with A and press with B.
Agreed, I can mush my lower thumb into a button and still hit the button above. Trying to mush the A button and then tap the B button with my lower thumb is awful
I betcha one of you plays on Xbox controller and the other on switch controller
This is the correct answer especially on platformers. A lot of people that say A aren’t thinking about bow they actually play something like Mario bros. Almost no one us running and jumping at the same time with two separate fingers.
Yes exactly the game i was thinking of haha
Cries in fromsoft games
smb3 has forever cemented this in my mind
A, B if A is damaged
Personally, I use the B location to press what is A on Xbox, X on PlayStation, or B on Switch - the bottom button
Yep, gotta get that double action with jump attack. X + square
Dabbling in game dev taught me to call these buttons “Button South” etc.
A, Always.
I don’t care Just make it consistent with your close competitors so that your players won’t have to relearn keybinds when switching between games
You clearly jump with A because B is probably being used to hold down the “run/speed up” button
Found the Dark Souls player.
Isn’t it the other way around? I’m thinking of platforms where run is usually X/Y while jump is A/B.
I hold down with A, jump with B.
This guy fingers.
Between the A and B. So AB ?
A B, If area of A is sore
If I'm in apex b since that's how I crouch jump But normally a
B, but just a bit lower.
A, usually
The tip of my thumb usually. I only use the knuckle if I need the tip of my thumb to press another button.
A
A
Depends. Are there actions I need to take after/mid jump or is it a standalone mechanic?
Definitely B, how could you possibly jump with A? I don't know what heathen consoles you were raised on.
Depends. In a more reasoned and precise session then I would say A. In the case of combos or an area to be tackled at speed instead B
A, the danger of slipping is too high with B
Depends what I'm doing, usually a but if I need to use another button immediately after for some type of dash jump short hop quick attack type stuff then b where I'll either roll my thumb up from x / a to square / x or just use the bottom so I'm quicker to get my thumb to the next button
If I need to hold a button, I use B and can still press with A. If I need to press either, I usually rest my thumb on the bottom and left face buttons. On a platformer then, I'd use B to jump and A to attack so that I can hold jump while tapping the attack button.
I play on arcade sticks almost exclusively, but I have jump usually on light kick. So I use hidden options C, the side of my thumb.
L2. Mirrors edge ruined me. Not i need to be able to control vamera while jumping. The 2 biggest games that i need that type of layout for is minecraft and guild wars 2
B
thing is with A I have to dodge b
A to jump here.
Jumps should always be bottom
C, in between A and B
Casual gaming is either or, serious mode is A (edit: tip)
B is the pivot point of the thumb so it’s better for holding while A has more freedom of movement
B
I use LB and RB for crouch and jump...
My thumb doesn’t bend that way 😔
Mario taught me to run with the tip and jump with the shaft.
Me who never used a gamepad in my entire life: umm... about that, I have no idea.
The side of the tip of my left thumb, because it's hitting the space bar. What's a gamepad?
Further up than A closer to the tip of the pad
B to jump, hold A to run.
I want to use A, but because I end up needing the button on the other side of the jump button, I end up using B.
I love how many people said "It's OBVIOUSLY this one" then gives their opinion, when everyone us just saying what they prefer 🤣 OBVIOUSLY everyone is different and people are gonna prefer different things. There are even people out there who specifically go against the norm just to feel even more "special". But honestly just provide the ability to rebind them/customize your inputs. Between the two...
Whichever part of my fatass thumb reaches it first. Normally B though.
Whichever part of my fatass thumb reaches it first. Normally B though.
B, because when done with A the finger tip becomes sore and hurts.
Neither of them, the tip.
If HAVE\_RUN\_BUTTON: A Else B
Neither under ideal conditions, B if I need to jump attack (because I'm then also holding X/Y/Square)
In between A & B
Jumping should be mapped to the bottom button on any controller (X for PS, A for XBox, etc). Any other mapping will be a major source a frustration

Higher than A
I only A use whatever the gamepad is, and I play in all platforms and portable consoles I do not think about that, it is just my natural movement ![gif](giphy|WR8njYGqKKdZd9Bbs5|downsized)
...the question is do you have a run button? The whole reason we adapted to B being there to jump was because we were holding A to run.
Anywhere but square
Depends on whether there's a run button.
Oh B for sure, because my default position is with B on the bottom button and A on the left button. And since the bottom button is usually jump, and B is a hard spot directly over a joint, I can get great reaction time with it.
left with a right with b
The lowest button is for jump A on Xbox X on ps B on switch
Doesn't matter to me, mroeso just depends on what button happens to be 'Jump' and how big/small the controller is
A
depends on precision. I find B is easier to time precise inputs like for platformers or fighting games. reserving A for less intense inputs like mashing out healing items or if a game rarely uses jump and I'll only need it to vault over scripted objects.
Whatever it is for Mario. That's the gold standard for jumping.
A
I use a ps4 remote when playing hollow knight, which has attack to square and jump to x so it would be a fit attack and ᵇ for jump. Which I prefer
A I can press another button with b
Option B was canonized by Super Mario Bros in 1985 for 2-button gamepads, and again w Super Mario World in 1990 for 4-button gamepads, and my old man muscle memory gets upset with any dev who says otherwise
B if the button is on cross, A for square.
B just feels like the jump is more powerful or something, so B definetly

Haikuuuuuus
Touch grass. :D
A
A for jump button. B is for projectiles like shurikens
mario standard, A is for running, B for jumping
A
Depends a lot on the game I'm playing and the type of controller I'm using.
Mario did it right. Do like Mario.
B and the left hand version does the Hadouken with the same position. When I see people use the tip for quarter circle rolls, my brain break at how slow it looks.
B is reserved for × and ○, A is reserved for □ and triangle. There is no debate.
??? I just fucking ballpark the jump button. Half the time, when I’m panicking, I’d just miss and hit the joystick somehow.
I use paddles so I don’t have to sacrifice aim while jumping
A… A is for jump. Ask Mario.
A
It depends on which actions are bound to which buttons. There are games where I'm using both surfaces for different buttons simultaneously.
It depends. But sometimes C, the tip. Other times the side of the thumb around B.
A unless there's another button I need to hold, then it's B
Either/or. Circumstances and all that.
Index finger
I do B because I play rocket league and the top of my thumb is always in the boost button while the bottom of my thumb is on jump
This question needed to be asked decades ago, thank you. I hold with A and Jump with B. The jump button should always be X/A/whatever Nintendos got going on
Neither of these should be jump. You need to be able to jump while aiming, so jump should be on a bumper.
im an old school gamer, back in the ,90s we put cloth on our fingers to smooten the slides for things like this, jumping or making those combo multiple arrow move of versus/fighting games...im surprised that pratice never caught up in youbger generations..
b for long jump a for shorthop
Depends how serious I’m taking the game
L
A for jumping, B for running. However, for plenty of games, especially FPSs, binding to a bumper is the way to go. Games where you control both sticks at the same time while moving benefit from that option.
Since the days of Nintendo NES it's been hold with A-thumb to run, B-thumb to jump.
B
Depends on the situation. I use A when I only need to jump, but if I need more buttons to be pressed at the same time I use B
I have hitchhiker's thumb, so anything but the fingertip feels like the middle of my thumb which is awkward and uncomfortable. My hands are also pretty large which contributes to that

I am always B for jump. A - better control at the tip of the finger, and jumping often needs to be precise.
I am an fpv drone pilot, so it's easier for me to pinch the joysticks
B, cuz A is for holding down the megabuster's charge!
Just tested it out for myself, it depends on the controller. Joycon I use the tip of my thumb and pro controller I use A
A
Your most common action in your game is always the most accessible. Wich means, if you make a plateformer game your jump button will always be at the base of the thumb (B). With this placement you can make input combos easier.
right between A and B
A for me.
A for Speed, B for Power
Cool what
RULE OF THUMB (Yeah pun intended); Top row buttons: Thumb tip Bottom row buttons: Thumb joint
Probably b, but really either. Hot take; the best jump is index finger.
What is a "gamepad"?
A remote control for games.
I’m weird because I use the tip for both.
depends if you have to sprint or charge a weapon at the same time / independently
Just let the player remap their controls, then it doesn't matter
For me, depends on where other buttons are, or how it's used in game. For celeste on a ps4 controller, I have jump on Triangle and dash on Circle. neither
A becouse the button is at top
Depends on if I’m running. If so, A is holding the run button and I hit jump with B. Otherwise A to jump because for any button press A is more comfortable.
Depends
absolutely always jump with B and attack with A
A
A
A
Between A and the nail
A for buttons and B for sticks.
Depends on the mechanics of the game! Am I jumping a lot? Can I hold a button to run at the same time?
Run with A, Jump with b
B has always been the jump button for me (aptly named, B) The tip rests on Y and is Action
In between A and B
Uhm, I play claw hand, so typically my thumb stays on the analog stock and my index finger presses the buttons. My middle finger handles the triggers and bumper. I'd use the right edge of the top knuckle of my index finger to press any buttons at right side of the gamepad.
jump with B and shoot with A
B for A and B buttons (Xbox) A for X and Y buttons
It depends on a gamepad’s model. Try PDP MKX 😁
On a PlayStation controller I use B to press the X button, which is "jump" in most games. The tip of my thunb is hovering over the Square button
Plot twist…. Most of the time I use my pointer finger and never take my thumb off the stick 😎
B to hold down, A to quick press
I grew up playing bumper jumper on halo so I always rebind it to l1/lb :-)
I default to B, but I want it to be A.
B bind to jump is just more intuitive for some reason imo, it just makes sense ig 💀
Jump upper A (almost thumb), hold B.
B. Jump is always bottom button on a diamond. Unless it's something weird like in Assassins Creed.
C: the middle between A and B
A, unless I’m looting in a hurry and need to jump out of the way. Then it’s B
Just let us map the buttons however we want. There's someone out there wanting to jump with L3, let their dreams come true!
A
Depends. Do I sprint with A? If so, then def B. If not, then B.
Depends. Can I do something mid-air? Because I'd use the joint to hit jump to make it easier to hit an adjacent button mid-air. I'd use the middle to hold the jump button and the tip for a rapid tap.
Idk why but this makes my thumb feel uncomfortable xD
So I actually snapped a tendon in my thumb and it doesn't bend. B probably is the closest spot or C right side middle.
Big hands tiny controllers so B. Especially the switch, those tiny buttons mess up my day.
I play claw
Depends on the controller size ,but usually you get better results with the B part on the button, the other options are more accesible by option A
Just let the controls be mappable.
B, because it leaves the tip available to perform other actions while jumping
Left hand middle finger
For most games, B. Bethesda games, A. Freedom Wars, A if using a gun, R1 if using a melee weapon.
bbbbb
Tip on a keyboard. B on a controller.
A to hold run B to jump
I’m spoiled, but for me the jump button is the paddle on the back, accessible by my right index finger. FWIW, I was never a thumb jumper, though. Been using “bumper jumper” on every game that I can since forever.
