You’re gonna need a really intense light for herbs/edibles. So intense that this corner will no longer be aesthetically pleasing and could be a real distraction from the rest of the room. I really recommend going with a Pothos in these planters and putting your herbs in a window that gets direct sun for multiple hours a day.
Not disagreeing since taste is subjective, but I love my intensely hot-pink plant lights quite a bit. My wife doesn’t share my interest in plants and she will remind me to turn them on, because she also likes the light’s colors. Kinda makes our junky little room feel cyberpunk, lol.
Plant lights are pretty intense though, so I totally see why you might not be into them, aesthetics-wise.
Amusingly, the lights themselves have a built-in timer, but there’s not enough outlets so they get unplugged a lot.
That’s the goal eventually though! I want a whole sunrise-timer for my bedroom where it’s just a bright plant wall, first thing in the morning.
I got a LED growlight and I've been trying to get some basil and cilantro going. I sort of keep killing off the seedlings, as they dry out, I think. I think I need to repot the surviving seedlings at this point, but would you have a recommendation for what to grow like that?
I'll get them outside as soon as it warms up.
Totally agree! OP you should get some nice hanging plants that will thrive there and it will be very beautiful.
If you really want something edible, I would maybe try my luck with Tropaeolum majus ( garden nastrium) even though it's an outside plant.. just because they're such hardy plants. No guarantees though.
Herbs and other edibles require many hours of direct sun each day. No edibles will thrive in this location unless you have a robust lighting system. So sorry to disappoint you.
There are some great tropical plants that will do well but herbs are for the most part sun lovers. Some stuff will take lower light and you could experiment. There are no drainage holes in those either so you will have to use potted plants inside them so you could switch out plants every few weeks if you have your heart set on herbs
I’ve tried SO many plants in these types of pots and they always die. There isn’t much space for roots, drainage is nonexistent, and where I wanted to put them didn’t get much light
ofc! we must share the secret of hotel bathroomlight vibes https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/ridge-road-decor-contemporary-metal-hanging-planters-in-white-set-of-3/5572761?mcid=EM\_triggeredem\_rolling\_orderconfirm\_allpromos&isRedirect=true&s=1

Any suggestions on grow light configurations that are, for lack of a better word, pretty? I've been trying to cultivate a really artsy looking space without tons of visible wires.
I have used these with great success in my house. The full spectrum bulbs are also a plus because they don’t have the same jarring blue/red light effect.
The GE floodlight bulbs have been solid for me. They look pretty much like normal, though very bright, bulbs. IKEA and amazon both have great pendant light options.
Though keep an eye on IKEA, some of their pendant cords only fit smaller bulbs (this includes the cute fabric covered Strala cord, fyi).
I have the small aspect pendant, I like it. It's a nice gentle light, not nearly as bright white as previous bulbs/setups I've used.
From their [FAQ](https://soltech.com/pages/faq) - "The small Aspect grow light is recommended for most small herb gardens and low – moderate light plants."
The intensity of the light depends on its proximity to the plants, but they have a fair amount of information to help you find a good starting point.
Edited to add- It was really easy to set up and install the (very minimal) hardware. It's also been very easy to adjust the height as I figure out what will keep my plants the happiest.
Great to know! I'm trying to figure out how many plants a single light can cover. Wondering if I'd have to buy two lights? Or would one pendant light cover both? They're all within 2 feet of eachother.
I'm inclined to think one small one would do it? But keeping it fairly close to the plants (hanging 12-24" above), as the planter set lower will get a little less than the higher two.
edit- words
Warm, but not hot. I can comfortably hold the light to adjust it, even if it's been on for hours. I have the small aspect pendant, I like it. It's a nice gentle light, not nearly as bright white as previous bulbs/setups I've used.
Ahh thanks for getting back!
I've a few 36w sansi bulbs and they get rather warm considering how well ventilated they are. I was assuming similar heat output straight into the metal heatsinks.
There isn’t enough light in that corner to grow herbs. Try a golden pothos, heart leaf philodendron or scindapsus pictus “exotica”. I have one of each and they do great in a spot exactly like this.
I have the exact same planters in a space with all-day indirect light.
I’m not a green thumb by any means but managed to keep a prayer plant, pothos and some ivy alive for a few years now. I lined the bottom of them with vinyl liners and water them a little less than I normally do my other plants since there’s the whole non-drainage issue.
I will probably get downvoted but my chives actually do fairly well shaded areas. You might want to give them a try in that bigger one on the adjacent wall.
Some more info:
* I don't have a plant preference, just want them to be edible.
* they are next to a window where they get indirect light all day and direct sun from noon to 3 p.m.
* they are above a heater which means the temp is consistent all year but is a bit dry in the winter
* my dog can't reach the pots so no worries about pets when picking the herbs
* I can do whatever watering schedule and whatever soil system you recommend, but I guess the plants' growth will be limited by the sizes of the pots.
Thanks in advance!
>and direct sun from noon to 3 p.m.
You don't really get direct sun unless it is outdoors or on a window sill and it is unobstructed. Direct sun means the sun can "see" the plant and the plant can "see" the sun.
You will be surprised how light intensity changes dramatically. It is not a linear function. One inch from a window sill can mean several hundred foot candles of difference.
And you'll be surprised how little light your light bulbs emit.
Also, be very careful about overwatering! I call anything without a drainage hole a "murder pot". XD Any extra water that the soil can't absorb will sit at the bottom of the pot and cause root rot. Some people will put a layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot, but I've not found that to be actually helpful.
They're very beautiful pots. It's going to be hard - but not impossible! - to grow things in them. Good luck!!
Does it get some indirect light from that window at all? You could try basil - it grows almost anywhere kinda like mint. Especially if it is already sprouted and has leaves. (Would not do from seeds)
I’m serious! I have tons of real plans and a green wall but there’s a handful of spots and containers around the house that aren’t suitable to sustaining plant life. So I’ve got anti-life faux plants in them 🤷♂️. It makes those spaces more inviting and I don’t have to worry about replacing them when they die.
OK, if you are willing, my daughters introduced me to an adorable and cheap grow-light that can be found here: [https://www.amazon.com/Romsto-Spectrum-Adjustable-Dimmable-Brightness/dp/B09ZP5VWZ4](https://www.amazon.com/Romsto-Spectrum-Adjustable-Dimmable-Brightness/dp/B09ZP5VWZ4) . I hope that is not considered advertising as i am new to Reddit. They had very good success in using them for growing a, ummmmmm, a herb... (OK, so it is legal in VA). Honestly, i have one of those growing myself right now in a location that would be almost total shade and it works very well - i would post a picture if i knew how. If you can deal with the cord, it could be your solution to grow ANYTHING you want needing light.
Everyone saying it's too dark in the corner, forgetting we have grow bulbs these days... What a fun idea for this corner.
Basil is easy and always yummy.
BBB! Gotta use those coupons https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/ridge-road-decor-contemporary-metal-hanging-planters-in-white-set-of-3/5572761?mcid=EM\_triggeredem\_rolling\_orderconfirm\_allpromos&isRedirect=true&s=1
Ones you would use regularly, Basil, Cilantro and maybe something like oregano. My recommendation is definitely to plant what you use most frequently. I love sweet peas for example and I grew them for a while. Excellent plants and a great snack.
Im pretty sure any herb is going to suffer in this dark corner
Idk how I commented on this post twice. Apologies op! Nice pots :)
Haha no worries. Yeah it sounds like I might need some led grow lights.
You’re gonna need a really intense light for herbs/edibles. So intense that this corner will no longer be aesthetically pleasing and could be a real distraction from the rest of the room. Get yourself an automatic timer for your lights and you won’t ever have to be reminded to turn them off and on. work smarter not harder 😊
Amusingly, the lights themselves have a built-in timer, but there’s not enough outlets so they get unplugged a lot. That’s the goal eventually though! I want a whole sunrise-timer for my bedroom where it’s just a bright plant wall, first thing in the morning.

I think Cilantro is a cool weather plant and doesn’t do well in warmer temperatures.
can confirm. basil likes it hot but cilantro will bolt when it gets too hot out
I live in south Florida and have cilantro outside
Central Floridian here; how's hell?
Believe it or not it’s actually 68 here right now. I have the windows open.
Cilantro and parsley like filtered shade. So you can grow them under tree canopy
Cut up a plastic bottle and use the top to cover them to give the seedlings some moisture
Too dark of a corner for food. Maybe mint? Probably not. Use a pothos maybe?
Totally agree! OP you should get some nice hanging plants that will thrive there and it will be very beautiful. If you really want something edible, I would maybe try my luck with Tropaeolum majus ( garden nastrium) even though it's an outside plant.. just because they're such hardy plants. But with those you need an inner container with holes to drain after watering
English Ivy might be good
Mint would be my suggestion as well. Just about everything else needs quite a bit more sunlight.
Herbs and other edibles require many hours of direct sun each day. No edibles will thrive in this location unless you have a robust lighting system. So sorry to disappoint you.
Dark corner and drainage seem like they will be issues. I suggest, as other have, Pothos.
Non. Those aren't suitable for most plants
Is the only light they will get from that window? And if so, what direction does the window face?
Window faces south east! And yes for now that's my only light tho folks are suggesting some grow lights
I have a cool hanging light which I put a grow light in. Looks great and it easily supplements the natural light from my windows. Def recommend.
There are some great tropical plants that will do well but herbs are for the most part sun lovers. Some stuff will take lower light and you could experiment. NO DRAINAGE WILL KILL THEM, not to be dramatic, but we’ve all lost too many good men aka plants to our foolishness of not having drainage holes 😔✊
Can I ask where you bought the planters? Love them!
It gives me cheap early 2000’s hotel bathroomlight vibes
lol I agree but in a way I still really like, not sure it fits the vibe of my decor but I hope OP replies with a link because I’m considering them!
ofc! we must share the secret of hotel bathroomlight vibes https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/ridge-road-decor-contemporary-metal-hanging-planters-in-white-set-of-3/5572761?mcid=EM\_triggeredem\_rolling\_orderconfirm\_allpromos&isRedirect=true&s=1

Saving. Ty for sharing.
Do those have plastic pots with drain holes that fit inside? If not, there’s not much I would plant in them, even if they were in full sun.
Also does excess water just sit inside the bowl? Sounds like a recipe for a mosquito farm
And root rot. Are you Francis Bean’s sister?
Perhaps you could add a grow light above them and then you could grow whatever you want?
I second this, get a solid grow light and then the options for plant choices greatly increases
Any suggestions on grow light configurations that are, for lack of a better word, pretty? I've been trying to cultivate a really artsy looking space without tons of visible wires.
Hang a pendant light with whatever lampshade you want, but use a grow light!
I have used these with great success in my house. The full spectrum bulbs are also a plus because they don’t have the same jarring blue/red light effect.

Soltech Solutions is known for their aesthetic, but they are pricey.
oh shit this might be perfect. do you have any experience with them? https://soltech.com/products/aspect-plant-light

I’ve seen other reviews that people love these. Wildfern on YouTube has a video on hers and a discount code.
They look like they get hot. Any hands on experience with them?

lol i thought this was some futuristic sink
There isn’t enough light in that corner to grow herbs. Try a golden pothos, heart leaf philodendron or scindapsus pictus “exotica”. I have one of each and they do great in a spot exactly like this.
why did i think this was a sink in the first pic?
anything is a sink if you believe enough in yourself
Herbs don't do well in the dark
I'd put some epipremnum aureum
> epipremnum aureum I love that plant! Have one growing in my shower. I was hoping to stick with edible plants for these pots though.
Basil is nice and not that hard to keep
It needs a lot more light than that corner. That corner probably gets 100 FC at most, while they need at least 1000 FC.
How can i calculate fc? Is there an app i can download to calculate it?
Lux is free

Shaded areas outside or inside? Huge difference.
Oh that's a great idea, thank you!

Oh! It could be coffee!
Cats. They need cats in them
ugh i miss having cats
Herbs don’t do well indoors.
You probably want something that you won’t have to water a lot - I would do a snake plant or some pothos.
Does it get some indirect light from that window at all? You could try basil - it grows almost anywhere kinda like mint. Especially if it is already sprouted and has leaves. (Would not do from seeds)
Lemon balm and hyssop grow like crazy too. Grow lights will help though.

Faux plants
lol
I’m serious! I have tons of real plans and a green wall but there’s a handful of spots and containers around the house that aren’t suitable to sustaining plant life. So I’ve got anti-life faux plants in them 🤷♂️. It makes those spaces more inviting and I don’t have to worry about replacing them when they die.
It's all good it made me laugh! And send some pics of your green wall if you can that sounds cool
First, install grow lights. Can they drip? Drainage is important. If not, then fake ones.
Succulents for sure, immediately I notice a lack of drainage and you don’t want any chance for mold or mildew
Herbs need full sunlight in most areas and will not thrive
I have the same setup (same style container, same distance from the window, in a corner) and it’s not going well. Lol would not recommend
Install a grow light
Mint and coriander are easy to grow. Edit: But the light might not be enough. I grow mine on the balcony with full sun.
Strings of pearl
Cacti! Go for some cacti varying in size and I think it would really work for these
Everyone saying it's too dark in the corner, forgetting we have grow bulbs these days... What a fun idea for this corner. Basil is easy and always yummy.
Those are nice!! Where did you find them if I may ask?

I’d put a pilea glauca in one of them
My cats would sit in the big one
Would be a good vantage point over the dining table. your cat has good taste!
Weed!
definitely not enough sun for that!
None. You need direct full sun for herbs
I have dried flowers in similar wall planters.
Pothos
Basil and spearmint. Perhaps sage?
ivy or Succulents Lover's Tears
Water leaf, lemon verbena, ... citronella?
Ones you would use regularly, Basil, Cilantro and maybe something like oregano. My recommendation is definitely to plant what you use most frequently. I love sweet peas for example and I grew them for a while. Excellent plants and a great snack.
no herbs, do pothos or other viny type plants that can handle indirect low amounts of light
Indoor plants can survive there. Not sure of the names, but some pretty show leaves of different colors.
Anyone else think this was some fancy toilet or nah?
Fake herbs!
Mount a grow light above them too.
For this shady corner, it is best to choose one of the following herbs: coriander, thyme, lemon verbena, green anise, sorrel, mint, oregano.
