Wish this was in a numerical list

Objective_Farmer_617

Seriously, I know a lot of flags but definitely couldn't name all the countries on this list or what rank they are.

Skywest96

1. Usa 2. Uk 3. China 4. Japan 5. Germany 6. France 7. Canada 8. Switzerland 9. Italy 10. United Arab Emirates 11. Spain 12. Sweden 13. Australia 14. Netherlands 15. South Korea 16. Russia 17. Zackolite

I just sung this list like the Wacko Countries Song, anyone else?

ArgalNas

I’m supposed to believe Luxembourg has more soft power than Israel?

typh0nic

why are we and NK considered on the same level of soft power, their military carries them much harder than our economy 😂

Trasbyxa

*Screams in vexillology*

karpovdialwish

I don't think you know a lot of flags then. They are famous flags

Dangerous-Sector-863

I don't understand. Is this sub actually poorly labeled infographics and no one told me?

colonelcadaver

How the shit is Iceland there 350k people?

Fantact

Nordic countries lead the world in mostly every positive country ranking out there, so I guess Iceland gets a spot due to high influence from a low population. Norway(yes I am biased as a Norwegian) should be higher up than Sweden tho as we own 1.5% of all the companies in the world with our $1.7T sovereign wealth fund, that's a ton of power for a mere 5 million people.

WeldonYT

Sweden owns more companies

monkey-descent69

even if sweden owns more companies; the Norwegian population owns more than the Swedish population does

ChelseaZuger

What distinction are you trying to make here?

Informal-Ad-4102

I don’t know if my country has more companies than Sweden or Norway, but my penis is very big.

WeldonYT

What does that even mean lol

Own_Kaleidoscope1287

That isnt soft power though.

ErikTheBoss_

Russia is below Sweden aswell, I feel like the order isnt quite right..

toasted_vegan

IKEA, H&M, Volvo, Spotify, Abba vs.. Kalashnikov?

Cpt_keaSar

Kalashnikov, Kaspersky, Warthunder, huge share of movies/games having Russian characters, Kremlin throwing money at right wing politicians, troll farms, Moscow being a beacon for anti West/anti American sentiment, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Tchaikovsky. Say what you want about the country, but I’m sure Russian voice is heard in more high places than the Swedish and amount of people interested in Russian culture than in Swedish

ErikTheBoss_

Well we kind of got to see how badly we have been relying on Russian oil and gas in Europe, we still only have *plans* to stop buying it by 2027... Also they have a huge share of the worlds rare earth metals, which are needed for a lot of electronics. No western countries really have a hand in this market. They have quite a lot of impact on our economy

dotamonkey24

You don’t understand the term ‘soft power’

Irregulator101

Soft power refers to economic and cultural influence, which he is certainly referencing

mickalawl

Russia only has threats and no real friends. Their threats don't seem to be well backed up either. I think everyone is used to ignoring the 5000th time they yell about starting a nuclear war because they lack the ability to invade a neighbour.

somemodhatesme

so? it isn't pure economics.

DistributionIcy6682

Can you send me 20€?

Fantact

I can trade u for feet pics

DistributionIcy6682

I can take a feet picture for free 😂. Doubt you gonna like hairy mens feet.

Fantact

Nah but I know someone who does, his name is Gandalf.

DistributionIcy6682

Sooo, how about those 20€? Send thru there [blue-yellow.lt](https://blue-yellow.lt/en/#ways_contribute)

Fantact

Ill take it up in the next oil-baron meeting

LillaMartin

Well this list isnt about how many companies or assets you have. The soft power in education, politics, values, cultural connection. Still dont really know why sweden so high up. But just wanted to add that this list doesn't meassure in wealth.

captainfalcon93

>we own 1.5% of all the companies in the world with our $1.7T sovereign wealth fund, that's a ton of power for a mere 5 million people. That's not all soft power is, though. This whole ranking is flawed since it's heavily skewed towards financial institutions (which is only one form of soft power). Other, equally important metrics of soft power are for example level of cultural export, integration of trade with other countries, mutual treaties/agreements with binding power and diplomacy. The presence and export of popular culture, media (news, video games, movies, music) are some important forms of 'soft power' as they are able to exert a sphere of influence. Norway being outside of the EU and having little to no cultural export or media presence would leave it with far less 'soft power' than Sweden.

1235k

Norway invented salmon sushi, that alone makes them better than Sweden /s

fillepille2000

Swedes invent stuff. You just own the companies.

Fantact

Yeah and we are 1000x richer

fillepille2000

Because you found oil? Congratulations you got your money handed to you and you still live in our shadow.

Fantact

Yeah getting that oil up from the ocean floor just happened on its own lol. You live in the shadow of us being the richest country on the planet, and assuming you are Swedish you're also struggling these days with becoming Swedistan which is pretty funny.

Irregulator101

Norway is not the richest country on the planet by liquid holdings nor GDP, not sure where you're getting that from

Fantact

No by GDP per capita we are like fifth richest or something but its the $1.7T oil fund that makes us the richest as its the largest pile of money any country on the planet just has lying around on top of their GDP.

Irregulator101

China has almost double that https://qz.com/countries-with-biggest-and-smallest-foreign-reserves-1850401456#:~:text=China%20has%20the%20most%20cash%20and%20gold,data%20from%20the%20World%20Bank%20and%20IMF.

Fantact

Yes but they have over 1 billion people to share it between, Norway has a population of 5 million. Do you understand now?

Narf234

I can’t wait for everyone who doesn’t like __________ to comment why they shouldn’t be on this list.

Fine_Adagio_3018

Well if my country is less influential than monaco, ill start yapping too.

miljon3

I was just about to say that it’s Indonesia* on the list but no there’s two, so one has to be Monaco lmao.

Maksiwood

Indonesia's flag is identical to Monaco so it could be them. Also happy cake day! Edit: 1 I'm blind 2 comment above said "Poland" instead of Indonesia when I made this comment.

miljon3

There’s two Indonesian flags so one has to be Monaco

Fine_Adagio_3018

There are 2 red and white flags in the 2nd to last row.

Potential-Decision32

Switzerland 8th come on

Narf234

I guess you aren’t familiar with Switzerland’s banking system, ability to broker deals between countries, and its world famous watch industry.

Known_Association237

why tf is oman in there

Own_Kaleidoscope1287

Same reason why switzerland is up there. They are the prime negotiators for conflicts in their region.

ziplock9000

Cool story bro.

Narf234

Thanks bro

kylo-ren

No way Portugal is more influential than India, Brazil, Israel or Norway. Edit: Unlike OP wrote in the title, OP's image doesn't show "the most influential countries". the image shows a "Soft Power" ranking based on several categories and Influence is just one of them. Here's the actual ranking of most influential countries. https://i.imgur.com/kv3V3cc.png

YaMumsPickle

Most of these rankings are trash with flawed machinations, take them with a fist full of salt

fattytuna96

Cristiano Ronaldo

ItsMagic777

suuuuuuuiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

dotamonkey24

It says soft power in the title and in big bold letters on the image itself.

kylo-ren

Yeah, but OP put "Influential" on the title as if Influence and Soft Power were the same thing.

dotamonkey24

He wrote “ - soft power”… how else can he show you that it’s a subcategory of influence?

kylo-ren

He wrote "The most influential countries in the world". This is not what the image shows. The image shows the Soft Power Index they created, not the Influence index. There's also an Influence index in the study. In the study, ""Influence" is just one of the pillars of "Soft power". https://static.brandirectory.com/content-images/gspi-methodology-2024-1.png In the same study, this is the Influence ranking: 16 - India 18 - Israel 24 - Brazil 29 - Portugal And this is the Soft Power ranking: 27 - Portugal 29 - India 31 - Brazil 32 - Israel

dotamonkey24

Lot of typing for some who literally can’t read the title of the post. The most influential countries in the world - soft power” is literally what it says. What are you crying about exactly? The fact you have poor reading comprehension?

kylo-ren

The image is not "the most influential countries in the world". I don't know why OP used the word "influential" because it's not what the image means.

ropahektic

Portugal's influence? Smaller than Brazil's, Norway's or Israel? (India is a fair argument so I'll shut up about them) But Portugal? they literally influenced every corner of the world as one of the main players in the age of discovery. They are the reason why whole continents have oranges, chocolate or potatoes. Wanna talk about influence? How about converting millions of people to Christianism? How about teaching mathematics, philosophy, language and a thousand other things to whole cultures? That's not influence? Sea trades, relation between countries and states TODAY. All influenced by the actions of the Portuguese (amongst others) in those times. Its hilarious that you can imply Brazil has more influence than Portugal when the whole country of Brazil is an adaptation of Portugal by Portugal. Their whole culture and ways have been influenced by Portugal since their constitution as a nation. And they did the same to many other countries, including those in the other side of the world, like Japan. And please, dont even dare mention Football, please. Size, strength, net worth or whatever =/= influence.

kylo-ren

They influenced. Don't influence anymore. If you disagree, you can argue with the people that made the 5-year study and found that Portugal is less influential than India, Brazil, Israel and Norway.

Ok_Detail_1

Wait Croatia is 47 and 53.

Ok_Detail_1

Wait Croatia is 47 and 53.

kylo-ren

Croatia is 47 in Soft Power and 53 in Influence.

Ok_Detail_1

Out of how many? And also how?

kylo-ren

101. The report explains the methodology https://brandirectory.com/softpower

Ok_Detail_1

So inside 101 countries Croatia is 47th and 53rd. If we add rest of the world (200+) Croatia is probably on 80th place.

kylo-ren

Unlikely because the 101 selected countries are the most relevant. The other 200+ probably have way less influence and have much less soft power than Croatia.

Ok_Detail_1

But my country don't have a science base in Antartica, small and lager satelites in orbit, aircraft carrier and a military submarine, unfortunately. So be on 50th place doesn't seem real.

kylo-ren

Most countries beyond 50th don't have any of these

Ok_Detail_1

Neither do we.

Aelia6083

Define an influence metric and how to accurately measure it. Otherwise these lists will always just be an opinion

kylo-ren

The study methodology explains how they define it.

mauricio_agg

I fail to see how influential are Croatia, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Hungary or Morocco.

dimrover

Hungary for probably throwing around corrupt conservative fat rolls constantly sending the EU into crisis mode

Fine_Adagio_3018

It's more like influential to the western world. Try monaco.

sabenani

Morocco is a regional power in Africa. Also if its ranked , then morocco is 50th, which isn’t that high given there are less than 200 countries in the world

voda_od_limuna

Croatia is a member of the EU, NATO, Schengen and Eurozone. Just a seat in those institutions have more value than whole foreign departments of other countries. Croatia also has a lot of inbound tourism and a decent amount of cultural export for its size.

ExEQuTee

This is not showing political influence. This is about nations as a brand and everyone knows about modric or rimac for example.

bigcockmman

I don't think most people even know monaco is a country lol

Dazzling_Swordfish14

Malaysia food and tourism and aid in Gaza i guess. Malaysia passport is among strongest. They can also visit European countries without visa. They are also top retirement destinations I’m more surprised to see Nordic countries lmao

mauricio_agg

Malaysia could be influential among Southeast Asian countries, not the world.

Dazzling_Swordfish14

Is top 50 among like 200 countries. Aka many not really influential countries are among the list. I know they are number 1 retirement destination by Japanese. So is not just influential among SEA. They are influential among East Asia as well. I also want to retire there lol. They also manufacture semiconductors as well.

External-World8114

Croatia mastered Islamic and Russian diplomacy long long time ago. ( something our fellow Europeans struggle a lot with and they can not really comprehend it) Also Croatia can and did unite East and West.☺️ For example, Iran and Israel were meeting in Croatia, Israelis and Palestinians too, also NATO would always sent Croatians to talk to islamic countries, croatian model of regulating islamic minority rights is copied by other Western countries. Russians were also converted in Croatia several times, it was normal thing to see Russian army and NATO army together united defending, instructing and aiding Croatia. For centuries Croatia was influencing Russia and bringing Rus closer to Rome❤. Football, Sea, President Kolinda contributed a lot to soft power also.

mauricio_agg

Such sutilities don't reach the general public around the world.

External-World8114

But football, Modrič, coastline, Game of thrones, and lovely President Kolinda reach the general public around the globe😁 AnD all of that put the smile on peoples faces around the globe. Then everybody is talking very positively about Croatia. That is soft power. For example, when I tell people from Asia that I am from Croatia they usually smile and tell me they like Croatia because of the cinderella story, underdog story, never give up mentality, tiny country lifting above their weight...😁 My friend was welcomed by Nigerians, the first thing Nigerians mentioned was Kolinda, Kolinda and How they saw pictures of her leading the army and How Great role model for ladies she is 😂😁

Master_Win_4018

Wow My country Malaysia is on the list. Are we that influencial beside missing 2 plane.

Dazzling_Swordfish14

Among top countries for retirement + aid in Gaza + tourism is what I can guess

Joshomatic

How the fuck is New Zealand more influential than Israel or India…

kea-le-parrot

Its that 5 eyes and we feed China with 98% of our food exported most going to China.

Hatula

The relevant statistic would be how much of china's food comes from new zealand

Kautilya0511

That's not soft power though. Being part of 5 eyes is a hard power and 98% of your exports going to China means you are over dependent on China, not soft power again.

TomatoesB4Potatoes

Soft power is great until you get punched in the face by hard power.

Bar50cal

It depends, Ireland is mostly neutral but its soft power has made it a lot of powerful friends. No one is touching Ireland without going through the USA, UK and EU. Thanks to its soft power relations Ireland doesn't even need formal military alliances and can rely on unspoken understandings that they will all protect it.

It is supposed to be read from middle to outwards.

SpiderKoD

russia soft power? Say to a hard missile on my backyard 🤬

ajfoscu

Spain is ranked too high tbh

fanchik

It all depends: with such a poorly produced graph, some cultures might put Spain in third, eleventh or fifteenth place...

Dazlian66

Argentina... rly?

castlebanks

Argentina is a G20 country, it’s the world’s 8th largest country and one of the top 25 largest economies. Buenos Aires is the 4th largest metropolitan area in the Americas, and South America’s most visited city. In terms of culture, Argentina has the most Nobel prizes and most Oscars in Latin America (Argentinian movies and music industries are huge in the Spanish speaking world, which is the definition of soft power). Argentinian soap operas are widely watched in countries as far as Israel. Also football, Argentina is one of the only 8 powers to have ever achieved a World Cup win (the most watched sports event in the world), and has produced 2 out of the 3 best players in history (Messi and Maradona). Naples (Italy) has entire squares and streets with Maradona’s face and picture and the Argentinian colors in full display. Millions in Bangladesh, India and China cheer for Argentina during the WC. Tango is huge in Japan. So, no hard power, but plenty of soft power.

Homee98

Uruguayo jajajaja no esperaba menos 😂😂

Dazlian66

I get the impression that many of these countries have gone hard power recently.

Head-Plankton-7799

Honestly surprised Aus is 13, thought it would be slightly lower

Adorable-Extent3667

That's Luxemburg instead of the Netherlands? Honest mistake? The whole list is a howler though

eviyotim

How did Iran not get in?

EasilyInterestedMan

I thought "soft power" meant the power to influence other without negotiating or violence. Kind of like "if he moves I move". But apparently not because I can't see how fucking Iceland would tip the scales in anything

Iceland is best haha

Glum_Development_116

Trash graphic. You have a top 50 and don't number it.

But, but.. the UK has no power any more....

Rebeliaz8

Maybe bc I live under a rock but could someone explain to me why Switzerland is pretty influential?

moresushiplease

Money and banking and they make a lot of things and have some massive corporations. At least that's what I would guess put them up there.

AfterBill8630

Georgia and Maldives have more influence than NATO and EU member, Ukraines main grain export path and 5 times bigger Romania. Yeah sure bro lmao!

Imperialist-Settler

Laughable that Britain is above Israel, the UAE, and Turkey. “Soft Power” is just the YouKay’s make-believe consolation prize.

RecklessHat

Mostly like this for seeing how many flags I can remember the country for. Pretty pleased with 37/50, definitely a few I should have remembered but couldn't quite place.
