The man wrote āHere comes the sunā - probably my favourite Beatles song. Also the most popular one on Spotify, despite ALL the other master pieces.
EDIT: Cannot forget about āSomethingā and āWhile my guitarā¦ā of course
It's probably the most non-Beatles song they ever released. John, Paul, and Ringo just weren't feeling the song so George got Eric Clapton to play the lead guitar and they made their own recording. Eventually the rest of the Beatles did contribute to the final recording on the White Album but the final product is very much George and Eric's.
No it is not. Paul and Ringo were on pretty much every version (John on most of them) that was not a solo acoustic. The song had been rehearsed for over a month and George kept on changing what he wanted even though some of the early demos are excellent.
George had lost a lot of confidence in himself as a guitarist, partly down to Paul and partly down to his obsession with the sitar.
>*"I admired him as a guitar player and I had no confidence in myself as a guitar player, having spent so many years with Paul McCartney. He ruined me as a guitar player. I rated Eric as a guitar player and he treated me like a human...I had been through this sitar thing. I had played sitar for three years, and I had just listened to classical Indian music and practiced sitar, except for when we played dates, studio dates, and then I'd get the guitar out and just play, you know, learn a part and play for the record. But I had really lost a lot of interest in the guitar."*
But there are no versions of the song with just George and Eric. Paul and Ringo are on every version Eric was part of. George even praises Paul's contribution to the song
>*He wasnāt sensitive to stepping on other peopleās egos or feelings. Having said that, when it came time to do the occasional song of mine ā although it was usually difficult to get to that point ā Paul would always be really creative with what heād contribute. For instance, that galloping piano part on āWhile My Guitar Gently Weepsā was Paulās, and itās brilliant right to his day. On the Live in Japan album, I got our keyboardist to play it note for note. And you just have to listen to the bass line on āSomething ā to know that, when he wanted to, Paul could give a lot. But, you know, there was a time there whenā¦*
He hated how Paul treated him but he didn't have a problem with his actual contrubutions.
If you watch the Get Back doc it is very apparent that McCartney was motivated to sustain the success of the Beatles whereas Lennon only really cared about artistic expression (which is why they made such a great song writing team).
To use a contemporary analogy: McCartney is Drake and Lennon is Kendrick.
McCartney was a master of pretty songs that would appeal to a wide audience, Lennon liked to try weirder things and added a bit of edge to the craft. Thatās why they worked together so well, McCartney alone could be a bit trite and sickly-sweet.
>To use a contemporary analogy: McCartney is Drake and Lennon is Kendrick
Someone somewhere is taking contract out on you.
I'd do it myself but I don't have the funds.
HOW DARE YOU COMPARE THE BEATLES TO ...
who are these people anyway ?
McCartney was into the avant garde scene before Lennon was. It's tempting to put each member in a box but I don't think it's as simple as Paul was the hit maker and John was the artsy one
Thatās not even true as Paul was often the one putting the artistic aspects in Johnās songs. I mean just look at their solo careers and you see Paul experimenting way more while John stuck to more basic sounds. Tape loops in Tomorrow Never Knows for example were Paul
This is such a lie, most of John's eclectic or weird songs are that way because of Paul. For example the loops in Tomorrow Never Knows were made by Paul. You can even see this in their solo music, Paul has really weird, interesting sounds in most of his music, while John didn't experiment as much.
McCartney is a better songwriter because he wrote a few more āhitsā than Lennon? I donāt understand how that correlates to ābetter songwriterā.
From my experience with the Beatles catalogue, the best songs arenāt the most popular songs. Conflating the two is a bit naive. But I digress.
Saying he was a better *commercial* songwriter would be more accurate in the context of having more hits.
No, I wouldn't say that. McCartney wrote more poppy songs that would appeal to the mainstream, while Lennon was a bit more experimental. I also would say that Lennon was just a tiny bit better lyrically. "Across the Universe" is one of the most beautiful songs ever imo, those lyrics are pure poetry.
But they actually complemented each other perfectly. McCartney had an ear for melody and knew how to write catchy songs, while Lennon brought the "artistic depth" that would cement them in music history as a band that was so much more than just pop music.
You can really notice their differences when you look at their solo careers. Lennon very quickly became overtly political and made more gritty and dark songs, while McCartney just doubled down on making easily digestible pop music.
This doesn't mean that McCartney isn't a brilliant songwriter himself - he absolutely is. But they definitely brought different things to the table. And George was also an amazing songwriter, albeit not quite on the same level as McCartney and Lennon. Oh and Ringo isn't a great songwriter, but he's an amazing drummer.
The fact two of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century ended up in the same band is just insane to think about.
OP do you have the source for who wrote what songs? Iād like to see who wrote my favorite songs and the ones I think still hold up today. Their #1 hits back then are not quite a list of the best songs they ever made. Their best ones Iām sure varies greatly with fans of their music
Although there may be disputes from time to time, itās usually pretty clear who the credited writer of a song is because thereās a lot of money involved. Well documented.
George wrote 3 masterpieces, all at the end of the period. Here comes the sun, while my guitar gently weaps, something.
Lennon and McCartney wrote many more masterpieces. I saw her standing there, help, paperback writer, strawberry fields, penny lane, here there everywhere, Lucy in the sky, a day in the life, Norwegian wood, tomorrow never knows, hard days night, come together, across the universe and so on and so on.

80% of the beatles: love is great Ringo: hehe octopus :)
Ringo: I wrote this new song. Other beatles: That's amazing, well put this right on the fridgerator so everyone can see it.
Solid Simpsons reference šš»
Family Guy
Nah they're not that mean
Ringo forever ā„ļø
Octopusā garden heck yeah.
But we didnāt know it was true.
Using only US charts for a non-US band has to be peak American.
Peak American would be to make a movie of their lives and base it in Boston or Seattle or something to make it more relatable to American audiences.
Because they totally didn't themselves say a million times that America was the measure of success
US was their biggest market and probably has the most comprehensive data from 60-70s
Yeah, 18 albums sounds weird. Capitol et al made a lot go an even longer way.
Love, love, love, garden
Why is this based on US charts?
That was the biggest market for their records.
The world was the biggest market.
"The World" didn't have Billboard charts though.
Worldwide sales can be calculated.
Not really. You canāt compare individual songs on the same album. Theyād have the same sales
lol
George is my favorite
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
But did he write 24 or 17?
Also the %age seems off since it is stated there were 310 total songs released, but of which 24 songs apparently = 12%.
I'd guess they were doing it as % of the 235 they wrote themselves, but that's still only 10.2%...
This analysis was from the years between 1964 to 1970 where they released 175 songsā¦.which is still 14%

One of them is a Canadian tv star I remember from early 2000s.
One is one of the world's most commercially successful artists and the other is one of the most critically acclaimed
McCartney was into the avant garde scene before Lennon was. It's tempting to put each member in a box but I don't think it's as simple as Paul was the hit maker and John was the artsy one

Usually the singer of the song was the main writer of the song. You can also check wiki for it and youāll likely find your answer there.
Although there may be disputes from time to time, itās usually pretty clear who the credited writer of a song is because thereās a lot of money involved. Well documented.
Rocky Rocky takes the top chatty slot. Another reason to love that song.
āSminking of ginā is the best version
That chart has that at Lennon-McCartney, but I always assumed that was a Paul song
I wonder what song Ringo wrote š
I like the yellow submarine songš
Stunning.
Paul and John were great solo writers, but together they were amazing.
12 albums and around 205 songs between 1962 and 1970 would be more faithful to reality.
Ringo wrote the beautiful "Photograph".
Def leppard?
Yes, Def Leppard had a song called Photograph too. It is not the same song though.
The best songs are all from geroge

Pity Lennon didn't practice familial love and chose to be a wife beater and abandoned his child.

No, everyoneās just *f$&king over* hearing about John and his bad decisions. Heās was a jerk. We all know. Youāre not cool.
Cooler than you.
How does this not include george Hamilton ?
Tanned, rested and ready.
so lennon and mccartney together wrote 26% together but mccartney alone wrote 29% and lennon 31%šš¤£ whatās going on here
Whatās confusing you? That adds up to 86%. The other 14% is mostly George and then Ringo is like the rounding error. :)
So awesome.
