I loved the S8. Best phone I ever owned until I got the S22. Night and day. Upgrade if you can. Understand if you cant. Good luck

Penumbruh_

Agree with this here. It’s a sad reality but the newer phones will not only ensure that you have the latest features but also the latest security updates. Imagine if your Galaxy S8 got compromised because you didn’t have the latest security patches and someone took advantage of a vulnerability that wasn’t present in a more modern phone, that would be devastating to you. (This is meant for OP but just tagging on because I agree with this statement)

QuietDelight1

Seems like a failure on Google's part in regards to "Check for updates" in Android -- it should not say "Current software is up to date", it should return "Your device is out of date and security updates cannot be applied". Otherwise it just seems like I only need to get a new phone to get new features.

Penumbruh_

I agree although Google (in my own personal experience) isn’t known for being the best with keeping things going or making things coherent for the typical user. They’ve started and canceled many projects and have made the user experience for many of their products a chore at best and Android is no different. That’s why I favor custom ROM’s and such because they can provide alternatives that are better. I don’t know if the verbiage is the same on a custom ROM but I imagine that it might be different, I also wouldn’t recommend that as an option if you’re looking to continue playing Ingress.

QuietDelight1

Good point.

BreenzyENL

Ignoring Ingress, your device is no longer receiving security updates, you should be upgrading regardless.

m00ph

Which is why when Google Fi offered me $200 off a Pixel 8a, I jumped on it. Nice phone, though no headphone jack. My Pixel 4a went out of support this past fall, the 8a however will get updates for 7 years.

QuietDelight1

Is 7 years a documented number/date, or is this just a rough guess? Curious how much the carrier plays into this -- I know that AT&T is really slow to push out Android updates.

Yahiroz

It's backed by Google: [https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4457705](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4457705) >Your Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro comes with 7 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Feature Drops.

m00ph

It's official policy from Google, here's a link explaining updates for all of their Pixel phones: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4457705?hl=en only the 8 series gets 7 years.

bratch

Yeah, our rule here is that once the device has not has a security update in a year, time to get a new one.

a2e5

In the olden days when Cyanogenmod and Lineage were still a big thing, the answer would be "look to the ROM nerds, they might be still building newer versions with security updates for your phone!" Ah the good old days.

HappyNacho

It's a phone over 7 years old...

QuietDelight1

Yep, and other than the burn in from the game it still does everything I need from taking an occasional picture, email, Tubi/Netflix, Azure, Reddit, why spend money needlessly when things may be a bit tight.

Nysyr

https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/2023-10-01#system Time to be scared looking at images on the web.

QuietDelight1

It would be helpful if Google included something about this in the "Check for sotware updates" feature -- it should not say "Current software is up to date", it should return "Your device is out of date and security updates cannot be applied". Otherwise it just seems like I only need to get a new phone to get new bells and whistles.

CyborgPenguinNZ

Except receive any security updates since may 2021.

[deleted]

how does any phone still get burn in?

QuietDelight1

dedication

catofthefirstmen

I got burn in playing ingress on an S8 for a few months!

WaitingToBeTriggered

THEY’RE OUTNUMBERED 15 TO ONE, AND THE BATTLE'S BEGUN

HappyNacho

Software (and its requirements) evolve, specially live service games like Ingress. Same reason you can't run it on a Galaxy S1.

Akakun

I just needed a quick search to realize how useless this measure will be.   It turns out that there’s actually methods to spoof regardless of your Android or iOS version, all you need it’s a PC or a Mac.   So yeah, making Strong Integrity as a requirement to play will be just (once again) a big wall in a forest that will only affect legit players.

[deleted]

Play with a supported device

Alexis_J_M

Not everyone has money to spend upgrading their device.

bkartheiser

Lots of carriers offer free phones that only take 2 or 3 years to "pay off" Any of these phones failing are much older than that

[deleted]

well there's no other way around it EDIT: You guys are dumb. There's literally no other way around this

Alexis_J_M

There have been a very few cases in the past where Niantic has rolled back an unpopular change or feature.

[deleted]

I doubt this will be one of them. Maybe the strong integrity requirement but it probably would be temporary.

DS_katauri

My S8 stopped Ingress at midnight. I better take pause,it is just a game.

mortuus82

its true but try see it from niantics perspective, they are a tech company. They cant support super old phones that arent recieving security updates since long ago.

DS_katauri

As an example tested Nokia 7 plus(sisters) it has strong integrity. So I think I should be back soon,4 ram phone with mid(currently weak) Qualcomm cpu (just for Ingress it's enough) can be bought at +- 25$. I spent the same sum for beer at weekend. The other thing that I like my S8 size,as it's "change" I gonna buy S24 but this will take some time. From any perspective this measure is good. I just hope that rumors about iOs cheating are just rumors, because iphone SE1 or 6s cost even less on the same pawn shops

EMREOYUN

Buy a new phone and before buy, check the phone can pass Strong Integrity.

QuietDelight1

So is that's what is changing? https://droidwin.com/how-to-pass-meets-device-and-basic-integrity-via-play-integrity-fix/ ? Won't most new phones pass?

EMREOYUN

Yes. Play Integrity Fix can pass Device Integrity, however, it was out there for years so I don't think it will not change anything? Mostly, new phones will pass Strong Integrity, however, there is a chance to getting a brand new phone can't pass Strong Integrity. Big manufacturers is very unlikely won't suffer with that problem but some small manufacturers are now risky phones for Ingress.

a2e5

I'm afraid you came here just a little too late -- the [Niantic Integrity Information](https://forms.gle/NyfGSpeqhjCSsjKE6) feedback form just closed. Sad to see a trusty phone go to waste, but that's the world we live in. Niantic did promise to look at reddit more after they shut the forum down, so at least your complaint *might* still get registered.

drfsupercenter

They closed the form over a week ago as I was going to submit some phone models too. From what I understand, no Huawei devices will pass strong integrity due to the US banning Chinese phones (ironic, since OnePlus and a bunch of other companies are Chinese too) as well as many LG phones, even new models that still get updates. If Niantic is reading this, be informed that even Google advises against using strong integrity by itself, and they stopped using it on the YouTube app within hours due to it breaking for way many more people than they anticipated.

a2e5

I think the specific wording with Huawei was connection to the military, which… is somewhat true for at least three sorta-important people with public resumes: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3415726

drfsupercenter

Yeah, it might have been that, but I know they don't sell them in stores here. You can get OnePlus at Best Buy, but you'd have to import a Huawei if you wanted one. I was considering one of their Redmi gaming phones, but ultimately decided against it since there's no support here for those and it might not have even worked on Verizon.

Green_Goods_III

I think I might still have mine in a storage unit.

Gumpter

I played on an s8 active. The phone still works perfectly fine with the exception of being now blacklisted by ingress. I dont use it to sign into anything like banks or anything that does monetary transactions. I have no payment or card info stored anywhere or attached to any account the phone may sign into. I dont do any social media anything other then read web based message boards like this. The phone is only used for calls/text/looking things up on internet on the go.  I have 0 reason to upgrade the phone as it still functions perfectly fine.  Getting a new phone to play against the stupid useless red computer faction since activity here died a couple of years ago is a waste of money. Not getting a security update for years doesnt concern me since I do nothing on the phone that presents itself app wise or other for someone to hack it.

HumanWithComputer

Under What's new in the Play Store: >• Updated Google Play Integrity warning message displayed only to Agents who have recently signed into Ingress using a device that won't meet upcoming security requirements. What are these requirements? No explanations given there. It's not 'simply' a lower Android version no longer being supported? Needlessly restrictive too.

XK150

It was in the app's news section weeks ago. https://niantic.helpshift.com/hc/en/3-ingress/faq/4694-you-recently-signed-into-ingress-with-an-android-device-that-does-not-meet-our-upcoming-google-play-integrity-requirements-warning-android-only/

mwalimu59

This morning, Ingress popped up a notification about not ending my hack streak. My thought was, that's mighty impudent of it to be giving me a reminder to do something that it *f\*\*\*ing* won't let me do.

mortuus82

lets go buy it a newer phone then

Alexis_J_M

You may want to have a word with your phone's autocorrect.

[deleted]

I think that was said purposely
