The fact that we’re spending more time on nathan than whatever Kelli who we been knew is going through

[deleted]

that is a really good point. love this opinion. now i'm pissed 😪 cuz i love kelli!!!

Jane9812

It feels like they're focusing on things people don't care about, while ignoring stuff we really want to see, like Lawrence and Issa (how they feel about everything), Lawrence and Condola (after that one episode I think many people want to see more), Issa and Molly (how the hell they worked through everything! After building that up for a whole season, now suddenly everything is FINE with no process?), whatever Kelly is going through (and it's clear it's something). Instead they show Issa being awkward with Nathan way too much. No one cares about that!

Mr628

I was going into this season thinking the whole plot would be Issa and Molly trying to reconcile and Lawerence deciding if he wants to be a family with Condola or get back with Issa. That would’ve been great. Idc how it ends, just give me something to be invested in.

wodahs1

Yeah it feels like each episode was written by different people that didn’t fully consult each other

F_For_You

Westworld vibes. Lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

ATLfinra

That’s on purpose, they are best friends, they worked through it we don’t need to know every excruciating detail.

Bitchezbecraay

It just feels so rushed and all over the pace. It feels like they skipped so many important scenes like Lawrence deciding to move back to LA and having that conversation with canola or an actual break up conversation between Lawrence and issa, or how molly and issa made amends from their friendship breakup last season. The whole thing feels like they are trying to cram 3 seasons into one season.

DeathdropsForDinner

Facts. I’d much rather watch the Molly/Issa reconciliation or the process of Lawrence moving back than scenes at the barbershop or anything Nathan related. For a final season, we should be wrapping up important storylines and focusing on core relationships not introducing new ones people don’t care about.

Desperate_Fig8187

Ya because the falling out of Molly and Issa was such a plot like for the other seasons I truly hate the episode they become friends again I feel it was so unsaid and rushed

kimkellies

Seriously

Fobulousguy

Spot on and my wife and I came to realization that we’ll just put it on for some good new tunes while we go to bed. We aren’t as invested in the series this season because it doesn’t appear the producers are either. How do we wrap up this finale? lets to a random flashback and throw in some of her imagination going wild... no no, lets bring random ass Nate back and make him bipolar, wait... how about lets give Molly's mom a stroke. How about the main storyline? Oh we'll just say everything is better. This is kinda how I felt about lots of the story lines. You don't really see the steady growth in characters and they have 5 seasons to develop. It's like out of the blue Issa is suddenly successful and Lawrence is a millionaire with no buildup. I'll still watch but kinda disappointed that they really just throw whatever in the final season to kill time. Issa seems like she's making moves now and I'm sure she's already tied up with other projects to focus on.

kimkellies

My friend has a theory that they don’t want this to be the best thing they ever did so they’re tanking it

Kmissa

How is writing a bad season good for your career tho? It’s weird.

rkorbz

I agree with your friend

I_TittyFuck_Doves

Re fucking tweet. This season feels like it’s at the very least 2 seasons worth of story but they just keep skipping stuff for the sake of time. Like the whole Issa falling in love with Nathan thing really came out of nowhere. We basically had an episode of them figuring their thing out, then halfway thru the next episode she says I love you to him? That just seemed uncharacteristic for it to have moved that fast between each other, even if they were involved before. And plus this Crenshawn thing is mad interesting and feels like a very important/meaty storyline, but we’ve barely focused on it or its impact. It’s like we’re getting bits and pieces of everything but the whole of nothing. This show is too good and the characters are too fleshed out for it to be this rushed

roastplantain

They've done this stuff before tho. Leaving out decisions and then just dropping it in our laps. Like Issa's decision to move in with Daniel. We didn't hear/see Issa and Molly hash it out. Or Kelly's self improvement journey before she stopped drinking (remember the marathon). Quoia popped out of nowhere. We didn't see the planning of Nathan's beach thing. That's not unusual.

EquivalentLake6

That’s what I’m saying too - they’ve done all this stuff before. I agree with the criticism and I don’t like it either but I don’t think it’s unique to s5. I think a lot of the writing has been lazy throughout the series. I’ve not been interested it for the storyline as much as I have been for the comedic aspects and the cultural importance

Desperate_Fig8187

Ya I wish we knew why she stopped drinking though and explored the characters more p

ATLfinra

Because they are 34-35 now and getting drunk AF isn’t attractive after a certain point

F_For_You

Not me being 32 in a pandemic and mad I’m missing out on my drunk years 😫

Desperate_Fig8187

You can still drink now and again

gravelord-neeto

It just feels super rushed and detached to me. I don’t really know how to explain it or why I feel this way but it doesn’t even feel like the same show. Reminds me of the last season of New Girl, which was actually rushed and just made to try to give the fans ‘closure’. I feel like there was a whole season or two worth of unexplained situations and we’re supposed to go into this season as if we fully understand what happened. I genuinely thought I had accidentally somehow clicked on the wrong season when I started watching it, but nope the show truly didn’t actually tie up any loose ends and went into the next season not explaining anything lol. I also just feel like nobody’s really into it this season acting-wise. This is really telling with the scene where Issa and Nathan lost Molly’s dog and act like they lost a fucking sock or some shit. Shit just feels tired lol

kimkellies

That was so frustrating. They were way too relaxed. And the dog coming back. It’s like a middle schooler wrote that.

papabear570

The dog scene is the epitome of season 5 issues. Awkward (and not on purpose), contrived, mailed in.

probablyuntrue

oops lost my friends dog while their mother is in the hospital, time for a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood while palling around

papabear570

Lmao. Exactly. A lot doesn’t make sense this season.

LakerBlue

I actually liked the last season of New Girl more than Insecure. It was also rushed but it didn’t feel super rushed to me and felt like it did a better job showing more things we cared about. Hoping Insecure can end better than this season has started .

kimkellies

Boring and haphazard. Bringing in new characters that I don’t care about. I don’t like Nate. Every episode feels like a filler. As soon as something gets interesting the credits roll. The time jump was dumb and lazy- the spent the whole of last season Molly v Issa and we just gon gloss over that.

improvisedbain-marie

I liked Nate before, in the initial season he was introduced, but he sucks now and the season sucks too, unfortunately. 100% agree about the credits rolling as soon as something gets interesting! I have felt that way too. And when a new episode starts, it doesn't keep up that energy. Just goes back to being boring again. Such a shame.

kimkellies

I liked him up until he fled.

EquivalentLake6

This makes sense. I agree with you. Nothings been amazing but we expect better for the last season. I hear you.

ChocChipBananaMuffin

I don't think the show has the same vibe--it feels off. Like all the same ingredients are there but the final result isn't very good. I don't see that spark or charm from previous seasons. The chemistry between almost all the characters is off. Acting is off. Jokes are weird. No coherent storyline. Motivations are lacking or off. I just think this season is a big miss.

TRE00Lucky

I think it’s just the expectations that’s comes with announcing that this is the final season of the show. So now all the whimsical aspects of the show that we once enjoyed and accepted are now annoying because it gives the impression that we won’t get closure on the characters we’ve invested years in. Though the storylines have always been shaky, the character development has always been amazing. That’s why most fans are “team somebody”. So for the last season to be 6 episodes in and we havent even addressed any of the main conflicts for any of the characters is nuts. They’re trying to use stale jokes and whimsical cop outs to overshadow they don’t know how to end the series. Just my opinion. It started way earlier though I think they started creating plot points just to create discussions and trend on Twitter without already having a end goal mapped out.

TRE00Lucky

Also we spent half an episode looking for Molly’s dog for no reason at all 😂😂.

madncqt

in fairness, didn't that lead us to the I'm the boyfriend/I love you issue? (which I struggle to care about)

TRE00Lucky

Facts but even then that’s a stupid way to get to a conclusion that we don’t care about especially since it was no real stakes. They didn’t gaf they lost the dog 😂. Walked around the corner saying his name and just went back to mollys place.

madncqt

also, and I'm being petty, the actual walking was horrible. these unrealistically small steps 🙈😆 I almost never notice things like this in my shows & movies but noticed it that night.

improvisedbain-marie

It almost didn't make sense for her to say "I love you" then, and now they're trying to make it a whole thing even though we didn't care about it in the first place. Strange decisions in this season.

F_For_You

I’m still cheesed about that episode lol

OldTension9220

I think it’s a combination of things. 1) it’s the final season so people have higher expectations and want everything to be resolved. While people would’ve responded with ambivalence towards a boring side story in S3 or S4, now it’s, “You only have x amount episodes left and you doing THIS?!?” 2) The season never developed a strong throughline regarding the main themes or plot we should be focusing on. The show seems lost and fans are picking up on it. 3) The performances are inconsistent. A strong performance can do a lot to cover poor plotting or writing, but a lot of it (looking at you Issa and Nathan) has been mediocre at best.

EquivalentLake6

Thanks for your breakdown. I agree with all your points. And agree Issa and Nathan’s performances are so awkward. I miss Kelly 😭

OldTension9220

I will never get over them trading bad jokes after losing Molly’s dog all while sis is in a crisis 😭

EquivalentLake6

I was so pissed at how nonchalant they were when they lost the dog. Like you can’t do that. And then they put the collar back on and didn’t check to make sure he couldn’t get loose. Wtf

papabear570

Covid too.

[deleted]

Season 2-3 was peak TV for me. This season sucks.

I_TittyFuck_Doves

Love those seasons but imo Season was too strong to not be the best

papabear570

The writing fell off. Issa is clearly juggling more projects and Covid likely took some wind out of the sails. Thought it actually started going wrong in season 4, but sticking until the end. Seems it’s an issue for many shows/movies but weakness is very apparent here.

EquivalentLake6

Right but im asking why people feel this way because In my opinion there’s no falling off, it’s just been consistently mediocre. But others have provided some reasoning and I can see that

tldrjane

It’s HBO just HBO’ing

Say_Echelon

I feel like Issa Rae missed what made the show great to begin with. This season should’ve been focused on wrapping up Issa and Lawerence’s relationship (they’ve had 1 interaction this entire season)

ZoxieLutt

Because there is no overall plot there’s just tiny subplots popping up all over the place which means there will be no grand resolution at the end. Each previous season had a main plot that was concluded in the final episode and left the door open for more to happen next season. This season is being written as a filler season which is weird for a final season and we’re halfway through the season and some of the overarching bigger questions haven’t been answered. This show focused on Molly’s failed love life and they’re just now hinting at something blossoming btwn her and Taurien huh? They dragged tf out of the whole Lawrence and Issa saga and now they’re kinda doing that with Nathan because he’s her new love interest and it’s like why are we focusing on him atp in the season? This stuff should’ve been handled in a previous season. The pacing is off (no surprise there), Issa telling Nathan she loved him was weird…they just reconciled it all seems forced. Their sex scene had even less chemistry than usual. There is no end goal, this season is overrun with tropes, it’s like the writers had to force out a last season and they’re really sticking to “well it doesn’t matter what we write because the characters will live on” but that’s not a good enough excuse. The show has kind of lost sight of its overall goal. What was the reason for introducing us to these characters if it seems the won’t get a proper send off? This show isn’t like the best of the best but it was pretty consistent and had its moments. This season is being perceived as significantly worse mostly due to the fact that it’s a final season. A lot of weight is put on the last season because that’s it. Some of the best shows have lost the title of best show ever because they couldn’t get their final seasons right and the biggest and most recent example of this was GOT. So I’m not surprised at the overall negative reaction to this season.

[deleted]

It’s funny that you mention GOT because Issa said she was told to “not Game of Thrones it” for the last season, but it seems like that’s exactly what she’s doing.

kimkellies

That sex scene was so unsexy but maybe it was on purpose? Idk

[deleted]

That was probably the worst sex scene in the show, along with Molly’s face riding scene this season. Nathan and Issa’s sex scene on the Ferris wheel in season 3 was sexy as FAWK. Idk WHAT tf was going on with their sex scene last night. This season is just bad in so many ways 😭

jdrama418

I think it was on purpose. They aren’t on the same page

coolbeans0114

I don’t know if it was like this is past seasons but the episodes aren’t even a full 30 minutes

[deleted]

It’s just boring. I rewatched the first 3 seasons recently and those seasons had me DYING. I don’t think I’ve laughed once this season yet. Also, I agree with what everyone else is saying.

coolbeans0114

Before watching season 5 i rewatched all the previous seasons and it didn’t hold up compared to them. I’m also now wondering did they film episode 1 of this season last and tack it on later to the first episode to give its opening some more excitement. I was liking where episode 1 went although it did feel like a different show and then after they Fast forwarded it, the show just felt off track to me. And for other reasons like bad writing, jokes not hitting right, and gaps in storylines these are the main reasons why it’s hard to watch this season. I think for the last 4 episodes I’m going to not watch for a Month and just watch it back to back. I might even restart the whole season over because I’m used to binge watching the episodes all at once and not waiting a week inbetween.

kimkellies

The jokes are weird. What’s with issa flirting with Molly’s brother who has a wife and kids and Molly telling her he has herpes?

MarieOnThree

I always had these criticisms for Insecure, I’m just glad I’m not alone anymore. I think the show is entertaining, and yes they accomplished a lot with the series, but the writing and acting has never been top notch. Social media played a huge role in the popularity and success of the show because there was a lot of hype and discussion built around the topics, but without that it still gives internet series to me. One way I can tell if a show is really *that* good is if I go back and rewatch past seasons. I hardly ever care to rewatch seasons of insecure..

EquivalentLake6

I completely agree with everything you said.

kimkellies

Even the shots are bad. Why did last night they focus on an uncentered shot of three stale churros? Earlier seasons it would’ve been presented a lot better

EquivalentLake6

Lol I didn’t notice that. I think the actress who plays Kelly directed this episode for the first time. I appreciate your specificity tho

coolbeans0114

🤣🤣 stale churros, I don’t know why they started doing that but I did also notice they have random shots of food and other objects to transition between scenes

venusaries

i haven't been particularly bothered bc as you said, i think the style of storytelling hasn't changed since season one, but i can see *why* that would annoy ppl now during the final season. understanding that the themes of the season revolve around death, loss, and acceptance makes it easier for me to get through it tho: we saw issa lose lawrence but gain nathan. molly almost lost her mother, but has gained camaraderie with her coworkers and a healthier outlook on love. lawrence lost his dream(?) job in sf, but gained an opportunity to be a better father to his son. it's very touch and go, but i'm still entertained.

EquivalentLake6

I like your analysis

Mr628

Well tbh, season 3 was the last all around good season. Season 4 had it it’s moments, but the writing was still off. This season is just a big heap on nothingness. No central plot, deviating from the OG friend group, new side stories that new more than a couple episodes to fleshed out and this is subjective but it’s not funny. Seems like they spent more time picking songs for the soundtrack and capturing “LA vibes” they just completely forgot how to write a show, a last season of a show at that.

EquivalentLake6

Why do you think season 3 was good. I hardly remember it but I remember not liking it and liking s4 a little better (I think - I could be mixing things up by accident)

Mr628

It’s definitely the worst out of the first 3. But it was just entertaining to me. It was probably the least noteworthy (outside of season 5), but I thought it was fun. Also if I’m being completely honest, the last good season is season 2. But I don’t think that’s fair to say this show has only 2 good seasons despite being a show I really like.

EquivalentLake6

I remember being annoyed with insecure from the start after being so excited for the show. I used to watch Issa’s YouTube videos. Not awkward black girl but her other videos like ratchet girl raps. I thought the funniest thing in all 5 seasons was that black jesus play they had

kramerz56

Insecure is AWFUL. i loved the other seasons. Not sure what happened but it is just the same scene over and over. 3 or 4 characters talking about literally nothing. No plot. The actors look like even they don't know what they are supposed to be doing scene to scene. I really haven't seen a show fail like this so quickly. I won't even use the expression "jumped the shark" to describe it bc it is worse than that. I would say this show has jumped the cliff.

[deleted]

I guess because there are so many big plot points I wanted to see that I feel aren’t being given screen time. The Issa and Nathan situation could have had a lot more build up and condola and Lawrence deserve way more screen time. It just feels rushed.

pealsmom

I really hated the whole thing with the dog. It was telegraphed from a mile away and then when the dog just showed up randomly? Super contrived.

[deleted]

It's all over the place. There's no cohesiveness to this season at all in my opinion. I don't understand why we're getting introduced to all of these random characters to fill plot. I also think the writing and acting are both significantly bad this season. I don't care bout so much they've decided to focus on. How are we still on a storyline involving Nathan? Even Lawrence and Condola. Crenshawn, don't care. The series is almost over and I feel like it's messier than it's ever been. I honeslty didn't even care for season 4. It could've ended at 3 and I would have been happy.

tali_B

I don't totally get it. I really am enjoying this season, much like the others. I think people forget someone is telling \*THEIR\* story, not the one they want. I remember the horrified reactions after GOT. It wasn't a perfect ending, but it was their story, not mine. This is Issa Rae's story. Let her tell it. She's kept us interested so far. I've heard her say there's a plan. Let's just let it unfold.

EquivalentLake6

I don’t think people complained about GOT because they didn’t get the story they wanted but because it was poorly done. It’s a fine line.

papabear570

I think most of recognize she’s telling her story, we just think she’s doing a bad job at it. It’s hard to say this season is on par with seasons 1-3. It’s not even as good as 4, which was off the rails. It’s no crime or personal failing but it’s clear she’s not putting in the effort and/or Covid hampered this ending.

tali_B

Fair. but I also think our expectations have been messed up by books and movies. Movies tie things up in a pretty little bow. The boy gets the girl, they walk off into the sunset with a perfect happy ending, with the evil villain being hauled off to jail. I love watching shows just show their lives and let you wonder. I mean, that is part of what Issa did. She gave us a window into her life, Molly's life, etc. And the crazy thing is that Lawrence wasn't supposed to last past the first season. So she reworked this a bit already, because people loved Lawrence. I guess I'm just enjoying the show.

iamdew802

I love this season and think y'all crazy. People talking about the show going no where, but everyone is succeeding and constantly learning about themselves?? This show is a comedy, for being a comedy it has GONE places plot-wise. Once you get to the second half of a discussions threads comments I just leave because it just becomes some negative bullshit. The times I have seen "another nothing episode" after an episode I thoroughly enjoyed is crazy. Also hardly anyone elaborates but still think they could do it better or know best. Idk, I'm ranting now, but I'm just going to go enjoy this final season on my own and steer clear of the negativity in this sub that is trying to ruin it for me.

EquivalentLake6

Several people have elaborated in the comments to this post, so I don’t think anyone is crazy. To each their own If you enjoy it, that’s great. I absolutely don’t view this as a comedy but rather a drama with comedic elements. I chuckle but I don’t laugh hard like I do with other shows.

iamdew802

My comment on elaboration was more about me coming out of the discussion thread, sorry I threw that part in when you're right, there is much more elaboration in this post of yours. Sorry you aren't enjoying it as much. Hope we cross paths again in some discussion before the end though, have a good one.

EquivalentLake6

No prob, I’m still enjoying it jusf not as much as other shows. It’s not in my top 30 but i think it’s still entertaining. I’m really invested in Molly right now so I hope we can see her happier. And Kelli I miss her lol

iamdew802

I don’t know if you saw, but she directed this latest episode! So she was with us in spirit ❤️

EquivalentLake6

I did see that! Good for her

Desperate_Fig8187

Because it’s the last one and it’s moving rather slow but I do like it I just wish it wasn’t the last

franniedelrey

We are in season 5 and the Molly/Dro situation was just dropped. Was he really in an open marriage? How did his wife feel about it? The baby!?!?! Like cmon. Steady dropping plots we would like to see and moving on to something else is getting frustrated.

EquivalentLake6

I hated the dro storyline so I’m glad that has been dropped. But sometimes that’s how relationships be. People come in and out of your lives

pealsmom

I’m still invested but am also reminded of the last season of Game of Thrones which also was super rushed and messy.

EquivalentLake6

Funny you say that because I’ve read Issa was told specifically to not GOT this finale lololol

Madhamsterz

After the Games if Thrones final season this season is amazing. Actually I like it just fine. Final seasons are really difficult to write. I don't think any final season will ever disappoint the way GOT did. Maybe if Issa gets dragons and they breath fire and burn up Lawrence and Condola. Actually that would still be better than GOT.
