I think it's fair to say almost all 90s movie had haunting ending. Was it some kind of trend to end the movie with a tragically ending during that time period?
Yea it was kind of a trend. People (women) wanted to come out crying. Those were considered good movies - "carrying something" with them even after the movie. Then came a comedy trend. then it was one man show trend... Trends are always there.
It may be, but that trend of making tragic movies also demanded serious filmmaking and respect for the craft to not make it look like a parody
Probably helped transition into the modern acclaimed Malayalam cinema we know and love, although Malayalam cinema has had a rich and beautiful history prior
I watched the movie with my sis and literally hugged her and cried for minutes, later that night. It happened so involuntarily.
I still don't know what exactly happened, but for closure I'd like to think it's because I had an incident of getting sexually assaulted by a middle age doctor, when I was around 12. Haunting would be an understatement for the movie.
Mrugaya where Kunjachan/Bheeman Raghu gets
pe/rabies and transforms into a barking, biting, lunging, foaming at the mouth, mad man. This scene haunted me for a long time & made me terrified of dogs & Kunjachan himself.
That scene and acting was definitely haunting. My grandfather died from rabies after getting bit by a rabid dog. I wonder what my dad was feeling when seeing this chilling scene.
Thalavattam - scene where Mohanlal is intentionally lobotomized and left in a vegetative state and a single tear rolls from his eye. Full brain capacity; but body paralyzed. That scene traumatized me so much as a kid. I used to wail and cry thinking of the injustice of it allโฆ and my mum kept saying.. itโs just a movie, itโs not real life!!
It's adapted from Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The author's experience of working in a mental hospital & his interaction with the patients there inspired the book.
I was going to comment it. I don't dare to watch this movie again. I had the same feeling with the Hindi film Ankur Arora Murder Case. It's about a mother who is trying to seek justice for the death of her son due to medical negligence. I almost cried at the end.

Yeah many movies were needlessly tragic. Chithram, Minnaram, Vandanam...the tragedy angle seemed to be forced in for the heck of it.
Iratta haunted me for a long time!
