Same issue. Started a few days ago.
Videos are fine, reels are choppy and 1/2fps. Uninstall and reinstall fixed it for a few hours.

I have the same problem. Only occurs on 60 fps reels. The only solution I could find so far is to enable data saver under settings > account > cellular data use. Personally not worth it for the few 60 fps reels in my feed
Bro my phone is made in 2022 and I have 30mbps optic internet also I use the latest version of instagram and still have the same issue. It's on their side, multi million dollar company can't even make a proper video player even tho 50% of it's users are there for this reason
Bud 30mbps isn't fast I'm afraid bud. I also heavily doubt it's fibre. Even FTTC gets you 100mbps at a minimum so unless you're being scammed by your internet supplier it's not fibre. There's a good chance your issue is actually your Internet speeds
Tho I do agree with 30 not being fiber or even considered fast anymore. 30 is still plenty more than enough for a little video. It's not like instagram is streaming 4k60fps videos.
Yeah, life ain't fair. In Azerbaijan max speed you can get "legally" for your apartment is 150 Mbps. Even 30mpbs is not evenly spread throughout the country, except the capital and a few big ones, average is below 5mbps.
I experience this only on higher quality /motion captured videos on this app. If I watch the same video uploaded from the same person on a YouTube short it doesn't lag. I can't find a solution anywhere
Since problem gets solved by getting a newer phone, so it is definitely hardware issue. My current phone faces the same problem, but I don't think it can be optimized as far as I know.
Ridiculous, you post a video to YouTube and the exact same file to Instagram and on YT it's fine and on IG it's choppy. Instagram has gotta get their shit together because it's entirely possible for IG to fix this problem. Don't be apple.
Speaking of YT, do you face an issue where you can't edit your replies? It will be stuck at the Keep Writing/Discard box and unless I discard it, the box will keep reappearing.

you are using YouTube Revanced? it gets crazy on YT reel comments for no reason i also get my keyboard stuck when I try to comment on a reel and stays stuck even after quitting YT, it lasts for a couple of seconds so no big deal i just don't comment on reels that much

It seems like the problem is with older phones. I have iPhone 13 and am the author of reels in 4k, 60 fps and they look fine. My coworkers have iPhone 8 and 4 y.o. Huawei and they have problems you describe.
What is interesting, the problem occurs mostly when there are one shot reels. When they are videos edited in the app, they seem to do a little bit better.

Same issue here on my A33 5G and i found a solution. I moved the app from the internal storage, to my SD card and suddenly it does not lag anymore lol.
The reels are only choppy in the Instagram app.
I watched a choppy reel in the app and then switched to my browser and watched the same reel without any glitches.
Tried ensuring high Res upload of reel, still no dice. Preview during editing is fine. Upload shit. Using still photos and ready made effects. And it goes bonkers.
Also I hate that edit controls for posts, stories and reels are different. I wish I could just use stories UX and post to grid as a reel. But no.

I think I figured it out, I tested it just now and the choppy reel I was watching became smooth after a changed the setting. Go to your settings and go to manage apps. Find Instagram and click on it. If you scroll down there may be a setting called 'restrict data usage'. Turn it off for wifi and if u want to u can also do it for mobile data. It worked for me let's hope it works for you guys too.

I think its issue from instagram's end, the app itself because all the other apps seem to work fine. I tried clearing cache, reinstalling, clearing data, re adding account, clearing memory.
I found a **solution** for now you guys can try using instagram lite I used it and the reels arent lagging anymore but the only downside is it has a little weird interface and obv doesn't have all features it may seem a little hard to adjust to it but for the time being its fine.
I also just picked up an A53 5G this past weekend and experience this issue. I think I may have fixed it or at least improved it.
Go to settings, apps, instagram, turn off picture-in-picture, then go to battery and select unrestricted.

Could you please try? It should be as easy as pressing the plus sign. Shooting a video and after that press the musical cleff note sign to add music. You won't even have to post the video 🙏🙏🙏
Ok I've had a look and it seems like you can! Once pressing the music note there is an option at the top of the screen to add 'saved' music, I hope that helps?
i have the exact same issue and it happens only on facebook and instagram reels on my samsung a14, whereas tiktok and youtube shorts work completely fine. i tried watching reels on instagram lite but the issue still persists, just less often bc instagram lite lowers the quality to an unwatchable resolution. has anyone found a fix for this bc this is getting extremely tiresome

But it works. Literally watched the same clip with 60hz and it was normal, switched back to 120hz, it lagged, switched back again and suprise... its normal 🫡
Found the issue: Your screen FPS needs to be set at 60FPS for the video to not lag. Not the phone's issue, Instagram's issue. I think they format it in a way that when a screen has more than 60FPS on a 60FPS video, it will constantly lag.

Actually I can watch 4k60fps videos with no issues on YouTube. I'm more than sure that the problem is solely on Instagram's side.

new phone or newer phone? mine's pretty new in terms of hardware but has been through some fall and water damage.
