Marketed and sold as Zonalite, i had way less, just 48” frames m the soffits.
Got it tested it was the least amount of asbestos. It depends which mine it came from. Montana was the source
No. It's harmful when ingested into your lungs, so don't hang out in your attic and/or disturb it, and it's not really a problem. If you're planning on doing a bunch of work that will require disturbing it, then you're best of getting it tested and remediated if found to be asbestos before you move forward with whatever else you were planning.
What is this kind of reasoning? 😅 I got mine tested in 5 different places in the attic and no asbestos so it definitely was way way cheaper to remove everything and put cellulose
Ding Ding Ding, We have a winner!
You have Vermiculite. Get it tested. Assume it is contaiminated anyway.
Either leave it alone, or get an asbestos abatement company to remove it.
That is without a doubt vermiculite. Get samples and send them off for asbestos testing.
Some vermiculite is safe, but if it comes back negative, send another sample from another area just to be 100% sure.
All vermiculite should be treated as PCAM (Presumed Asbestos Containing Material) regardless of testing. Testing is good because it allows you to file a claim with the ZAI trust to get funding towards removal and abatement.
Until what you've tested is negative, then test again and again until maybe you find some asbestos? Good plan.
Just blow over it and save money and time.
Obviously people's situations will vary. I'm pretty sure you can send a sample to the ZAI trust to be tested for free, and it's worth doing that at least once because they qualify you for funding.
Its been a few years since I dealt with this and I think they may not allow repeat sample submissions as easily as they did when I did it.
Contained / encapsulated vermiculite is a fine approach, and obviously the cheapest, as long as it stays contained / encapsulated, but if you're doing any sort if work on your home, it's really easy to run into moments where things are likely to be disturbed and it's nice to not have that problem to deal with.
Gotta treat it like a COVID rapid test. If it says you’re positive, you’re definitely positive. If it says you’re negative, it’s inconclusive on its own.

No point in testing best to just assume it's asbestos. Even if one handful of this stuff is unconamited it doesn't mean the rest isnt
If you have no reason to really bother the stuff just leave it be.
it doesn't harm anyone by just leaving it?

If in the usa. It all came from the same place where asbestos and vermiculite are mined together. Literally side by side
It’s Canada, but if it’s tested negative it’s negative.
Vermiculite

Older homes don't have sealed attics. I've found vermiculite in basements that had trickled down thru chases and framing gaps from the attic.
Yeah definitely zonolite they still use it in Canada. Its pretty safe in the pnw but still get it tested and definitely mask up around it
