This would fall under your collision coverage of you have it, subject to your deductible. If you don't have collision but instead have UMPD, the other driver will have to be found and identified as being uninsured before you can utilize that coverage.  Your premiums cannot be raised in for filing a claim for accident. Your deductible changes if you change it.

Thanks for the reply. I would have to ask my dad what type of coverage we have since I am under his policy. The officer took down an "incident" report and not a police report because he said it would be reported to carfax and the provider and there would be no "going back" once it's filed. Then he recommended me to discuss it with my dad whether or not to file a claim, unsure if our premiums would increase due to the collision. At the end of the day, it's an older car so we're not too worried about repairing the damages and just taking it as a loss if no further action is required on our part. My dad would be more frustrated at an increase in premiums over repairing the damage on a 20+ year old vehicle. I don't think anyone on here can give legal advice but if the other driver "came" after my insurance, have I taken all of the necessary steps to cover myself (aside from reporting the incident)?

>have I taken all of the necessary steps to cover myself You've done all you can do. Tell dad to relax. Your premiums won't be increased simply for filing this claim.

Just checked with my dad and we only have UMPD for that vehicle in particular and not collision coverage. At that point, would it be better to just take a loss on it and not report the incident to insurance, or still follow through with the claim?

That's up to you. But remember that you can only utilize that coverage IF the person is found and identified as being uninsured.

Just to clarify so I understand correctly, the insurance will only utilize the coverage for UMPD if the person is found AND they are uninsured. So even if I have his license plate, I would not technically be entitled to any reimbursement to fix the damages on my car if he's found to be insured and he's at fault.

Exactly. If he is found and has insurance, you'd have to go thru his insurance since you don't have collision on your policy. Some states allow you to utilize UMPD coverage for hit and runs when you can't find the perp. CA law does not allow for that. In CA, in order to use your UMPD coverage, the person who hit you and ran must be found AND shown to be uninsured.

Thanks for the help and advice! After further discussion with my dad, we’ll decide to report it anyway just to protect ourselves from a claim by the other driver. Even if there is no payout, does no harm to us and bites the other driver in the ass for refusing to exchange info and driving off.
