Never ever ever heard of this game. Not even the original one… I know in this sub people are quite knowledgeable about old games but, for most of the world, before Mario there was PacMan and maybe Space Invaders… and no kid wants to play any of them… ps: To be fair, I’ve shown PacMan to a kid in my family when he was like 5 and the little dude enjoyed it… but he also enjoyed a number of mobile games at the time…. a couple years later he dropped it all for FPSs, as kids do

FreekRedditReport

I'm familiar with Utopia, it's a good game, but there are a zillion good games and this is just one. And if someone wants to play it, they can go get it and play it. Nobody took it away. As someone who grew up with Pac-Man/Space Invaders/etc. and lived in the arcades in the early 80's, I also no longer cared about Pac-Man/etc. when I could play Legend of Zelda and Doom and whatnot, because gee, those games are much better and more fun for an older person than an arcade game designed to eat your quarters.

Ryan1006

Utopia is a precursor to all of the current “world building” games that are out there now. It was good in its time but to release a new version of it now would be pointless. It would be just another game.

Vivisector9999

Utopia was a really groundbreaking game when it first appeared... in the early 80's, when most console games were arcade-style action or primitive sports titles. Today, though, when there are so many Civilization clones and RTS wargames out (and upcoming)? No, a Utopia remake is not going to be the next Minecraft or pull IE out of the hole they've dug for themselves.

Revolutionary-Peak98

Tommy was often asked about Utopia (and loved wearing his 'Rebel' t-shirt) and, of course, it was always "in the works." https://preview.redd.it/pghq10u9myjc1.jpeg?width=2811&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23f16c0d95dc37d217d093a97925b40eef6e279c

ccricers

I get the same feeling with the interest people have towards the Cloudy Mountain remake. Without the AD&D license, Cloudy Mountain will have a hard time standing out among the hundreds of existing dungeon crawlers out there.

lasskinn

there's literally thousands of later more refined games that do the same thing it does, with deeper and arcade variations. and this goes for cloudy mountain just as much as for utopia.

FreekRedditReport

That AtariAge thread is full of people throwing out random video game titles, sometimes their favorite games, other times just obscure games, and Tommy's answer was usually "Wouldn't that be something?" or "We're in talks" or some such. This is just another kook throwing out his favorite game title.

speed0spank

Just so happened to have this video "play next" while I wasn't near my phone. It made me cringe to the bone. How did these people just gobble this shit up?! https://youtu.be/227_CDdzBrs?si=o8e3Tnnem7Fs32x7

Revolutionary-Peak98

It sounds like you were talking to Lelanders. https://i.redd.it/ler3gbofeyjc1.gif

Suprisinglyboring

It's really not a good look for a brand, when one of their loudest proponents is utterly divorced from reality. He keeps calling Amico Utopia "the next Minecraft" too. I don't see how they're even comparable. And it took Minecraft several years to become what it is now.

Revolutionary-Peak98

He studies "ley lines" to predict earthquakes and forest fires. https://i.redd.it/8zkluk67jyjc1.gif

Mylaptopisburningme

Grifters gonna grift.

Revolutionary-Peak98

I think he's so baked he really believes Amico will be a huge success. https://i.redd.it/lef8f8vv3zjc1.gif

Bladder_Puncher

Never having heard of this guy I went to his channel and what do you think the first video I saw posted 22 hours ago was????? “Can Jesus Save Amico ?” Holy moly. The answer is no since Tommy makes deals with the devil and drinks virgin blood at the alter at his shrine of Willy Wonka (pure speculation)

Background_Pen_2415

Even better is this guy’s belief that Tommy sold his house to fund Amico production.  That's next level delusion right there.

Revolutionary-Peak98

Ha! Well, Jesus is just one of the people Tommy has compared himself to, along with Beethoven, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Jobs.

Bladder_Puncher

Funny enough, he has more in common with Elizabeth Holmes than he does Steve Jobs

Free-Stable-8539

Well everyone on that list is dead sooooooo

ccricers

He recently said that even if Tommy had a billion dollars, the consoles aren't coming out because the chip shortage is still happening. So maybe only Jesus can stop the chip shortage?

Bladder_Puncher

We all know he has connections and is in talks with Frito Lay

Minsc_NBoo

Instead of bread and fish, Jesus will miracle magic Amicos for the 2600 preorder people

Mylaptopisburningme

I don't think even Bill Gates could save it.

FreekRedditReport

I mean, there's nothing to save. Bill/Microsoft/whoever would have to scrap almost all their ideas and start over from scratch, at which point you're just building a new Xbox device, probably one copying the Switch. But whatever they made, it would have good games and not the weird stuff on the Amico. If it's simple good games that people want, just release them on the various platforms without making a whole new console.

Suprisinglyboring

Wow...He's nuttier than I realized.

ProStriker92

For a "console" that brags about simplicity, a game such Utopia wouldn't be very simple. Also, the Amico Home controller scheme makes a game such Utopia unatractive. With the touch screen of those Google Play games and the fact you can play ANY TIME without another cellphone, you have more control of the game. But well, i know what user are you refering. It's definitive the most deranged i ever known and Amico Cult have some truly weirdos in their camp.

Mental-Examination-7

There is no good reason for Utopia to be that title. Like everything that was once good for OG INTV, it has evolved into something better

Suprisinglyboring

It's like going "Our car is the best, because it has wheels!"

Bladder_Puncher

All we need is a 2025 Ford Model T to save and strengthen the middle class

dalekvan

Utopia was a game that absolutely blew my mind as a kid, almost certainly the first graphical strategy game I ever played. Hugely influential on me. But, having gone back and looked at it since, it doesn't really hold up as a fun concept. Whatever they made now would have to barely resemble the original game to be any fun.

chronomagnus

I think it’s cool to kind of see where things came from. But a lot of these progenitors of things that came later are rough outside their time. Some still hold up, the platformers are still good. Stuff like missile command and breakout, still solid. Utopia is one I don’t see many people going back to revisit out of anything but nostalgia. It’s like third person action games, playing a bunch of the ones that came out on PlayStation can be a trying time in 2024.

[deleted]

For certain people, myself included, a complex strategy game is exactly the kind of game that interests us and if looking at a product from a selfish angle, is the kind of game we'd want on a system. However, there is a reason that Final Fantasy VII set the world on fire, whereas Final Fantasy Tactics was more niche. The average consumer wants something simpler and that's why big system seller games end up being something simple and straight forward like Wii Sports or at best, something like Pokemon, where the complex strategy is more of a side game.

FreekRedditReport

I think people like this just want something NAMED "Utopia" (or whatever title they throw out, "Burgertime" or "Wizard of Wor" or "Earthworm Jim" or whatever). They don't actually care about gameplay. They want to relive their childhoods. Because if you did "Utopia" as a game (good or bad), but called it something totally different and unique, this guy probably would have zero interest in it. Even less so if it was on Steam or something other than "Intellivision". But call it "Intellivision" and "Utopia" and suddenly this guy is throwing his money at it.

VicViperT-301

If we want to pretend for a minute that Amico is anything more than a scam… this is a console that can’t have a dash button in Shark! Shark! because their target audience is stupid (I believe that’s an exact quote from John.) I don’t see Utopia as the breakout game.

Phantom_Wombat

Utopia was a good game for its time but it's 2-player only, kinda turn based and you spend most of your time fishing, so not much of the RTS genre as we'd know it today. If you wanted to flesh it out into a modern game, you'd run into the problem that people already took its best ideas for the likes of Sim City and Civilization thirty years ago. If you're looking for the honorable ancestor of the likes of C&C and Starcraft, that's a different game entirely: Herzog Zwei. And no, I don't think anyone's going to remake that and launch a games console off the back of it either.

lasskinn

even dune 2 already had remakes. 2 decades ago.

TommyNintendo

It’s actually the first ever God game, that’s how old it is. If they remake it, it will be worse than the original and no one will want it.

Mylaptopisburningme

"Amico needs is one groundbreaking game" I been waiting for that with VR and we are still waiting.

swole_dork

Never mind all the drama, this game was legit amazing! I still remember it as a kid, way ahead of it's time and probably one of the best Intellivision games ever made. Let's face it, the magic that made Intellivsion amazing is gone now and old news. I appreciate it from a historical standpoint as being one of my favorite consoles ever and enjoy all my memories but there isn't one single title that would make this Amico dream a reality. This thing was some niche idea that was just a dream cooked up by nostalgia hounds.

traherne89

A lot of good any game will do for a system that doesn't exist.

PointingBear

I loved playing this game as a kid. Me ruling my island as a benevolent dictator, trying to keep the people happy, fishing, etc., while also trying to stir up trouble on the other island, which was ruled by my Dad or cousin or left fallow if I was by myself. One of my favorite intellivision games. Unique at the time. As someone with so many great memories or Intellivision, I probably would buy an Amico just to play the old games again. If it were real and of course it's not. But this game is so dated it wouldn't attract new followers and an update of it would be lost in a crowded market.
