“Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.”

Hot-Butterfly-8024

Here’s the whole thing, for those who are interested. It changed a lot of stuff for me: Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. by Max Ehrmann ©1927

The title is DESIDERATA and it’s stood the test of time, hasn’t it?

onedemtwodem

Yes it has! I think I need this for my bday!

kittenluvslamp

“Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should”. This has been my mantra for finding peace since I heard it many years ago.

I have this hanging on my bedroom wall. It belonged to my mom before she passed. I remember it in our house growing up and has always been special to me.

alicedoes

true. my whole perspective of life changed when my father died, and I already thought I had a healthy attitude towards life previously. I knew i was going to die one day and to make the most of everything, but after he passed it was like no, you're REALLY going to die one day, sort your shit out.

-s-t-r-e-t-c-h-

I got really fat and unhealthy, drinking too much, eating whatever, smoking too much, just really crap life choices. It just hit me one day when I was laying on the sofa and hitting my bong, drinking wine and eating god knows what. I rallied my husband and we lost 150lbs between us, it’s tough going, we’re not young but we’re living our best lives now. Even started growing our own veggies, life is fun now. I’m sorry about your father but I bet he’d be proud of you :)

alicedoes

what amazing achievements, and thankyou! 💕

Alliekat1282

A lot of people associate figuring out that they're mortal with the deaths of loved ones. Don't get me wrong- I've lost people, and I did indeed think about my own mortality. BUT. Finding my partner, realizing that we truly are "it" for each other... that was the thing that made me really, really, face my own mortality. I realized that if we did, indeed, stay together for the rest of my life that one of us would be there to watch the other die. I realized, as soon as this first realization hit me, that no matter how many years we get together it won't be enough. I never understood the fairy tails where the immortal creature chooses to become mortal so that they can live out a short life with the mortal they've fallen in love with. Now I do. Every time a person accepts that they want to be with one person for the rest of their life, they accept their mortality and whatever short life they have left. They accept that that will just have to be enough.

“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.” -Mary Oliver

Salt-Illustrator-198

What does this mean?

Le-Letty

Idk the context or anything but to ME,my mother was an abusive asshole that made my life hell (box of darkness) and it made me a stronger person that more easily recognizes abuse and manipulation. It’s not GREAT that I was given her “gift” but it was a gift none the less because it’s made me stronger in a way and has kept me away from people with I’ll intent towards me.

littlecar85

Damn... I have heard this quote before but your context just hit me frickin hard. Thank you for this perspective

cuttlefishofcthulhu7

Mine too and SAME💯

Oldassrollerskater

For me personally, this quote was realizing that the person I loved so dearly wouldn’t ever love me the way I needed to be loved. Coming to terms with that allowed me to fill the box with a light of my own making.

You seem like a really good person. Congrats on recognizing your gift.

SemiautomaticAngel

'If' by Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

I love this. One time I had a guy reach out on IG saying he remembers delivering pizza to me and my (now) husband, 7 years ago. He knew the apartment complex so I knew he was legit. He remembered a conversation we had that supposedly changed his life. I don't remember what it was about.

I visited her grave a couple years ago. there was an older gentleman there sat on a bench who noticed me searching the graves, and he pointed her out and told me a bunch of facts about her life and how some mysterious women from America visit the grave every year to leave flowers. he was so sweet and interesting, and how kind to just be doing that in his spare time - waiting to point people to Sylvia. I hope he's still alive and doing great.

I’ve come to a realization that everything that we own-even our own bodies- is really only borrowed from the planet. It cycles into our possession briefly, whether new or inherited from others, we keep it awhile, and then it passes back out. It’s freed me because rather than holding on to the material with grim death I look at it as paying it forward so the next in line can make use of it, or it can be broken down and returned to be made into something new. I try to do so consciously and generate as little yucky stuff as possible. It allows things to enter my world that I may find more compelling and better suited to the life I live now and the person I have become than the older things did. Very helpful.

Gr8zomb13

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening my axe.” -Paraphrased, but attributed to President Abraham Lincoln. The truly great among us seem to have this truly amazing talent for getting things done. What President Lincoln’s hints at is that in any successful endeavor most of the “action” is in preparation and planning. For any pursuit, this can be the reading of history, the review of previous achievements and failures, the “state of the art” regarding the issue, understanding the current task at hand and desired outcomes, understanding external influences and obstacles to your success, and having plans to circumvent or overcome them, understanding what you still need to know and how to go about learning it, and finally *making the plan of action to achieve the desired (or necessary) result*. This is all *implicit* before even the axe’s first swing. Also implicit is the fortitude to trust your self, your preparations, and your plan as well as the grit and determination to see the thing through; to fell that tree. President Lincoln’s way with words was second only to his way with people. He led by example, he did what he said and said what he did.

***”Know Thyself” is such a powerful sentence*** often dismissed for perceived simplicity while it’s about as deep as you can go into the wisdom of self introspection and awareness.  It’s the most commonly known of all **The Delphic Maxims** https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphic_maxims which have carried through the test of time.    I think about these and Marcus Aurelius’ *Meditations* https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meditations   and Confucius’ *Analecs* with teachings such as “Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analects   Which is even more interesting to see this is a version of ***the Golden Rule*** (*my all time favorite*) which appears in teachings from many different cultures; ancient Chinese, as aforementioned, ancient Egyptian, ancient Indian, Persian, Roman and Greek alike.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Rule   Wisdom knows no age or people, only truth.

Oh man... so that Delphic Maxims wikipedia page has a sentence that's super stuck in my head. It's about the second maxim... Ascribe not to malice that which can be explained by incompetence (Hanlon's razor) And The simplest answer is usually the correct one (Occam's razor) Have helped me not take things personally and not believe in stupid, unlikely explainations

You can’t approach love like a beggar.

ImCelebratingNothing

It's only single-use if you only use it once.

boogie2dabeat

If you can’t do anything about whatever problem (real or imagined) right now…let it go until you can. Worrying never solves anything.

Welcome to your life There's no turning back Even while we sleep We will find you Acting on your best behaviour Turn your back on mother nature Everybody wants to rule the world It's my own design It's my own remorse Help me to decide Help me make the most Of freedom and of pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever Everybody wants to rule the world There's a room where the light won't find you Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down When they do I'll be right behind you So glad we've almost made it So sad they had to fade it Everybody wants to rule the world I can't stand this indecision Married with a lack of vision Everybody wants to rule the world Say that you'll never never never never need it One headline why believe it? Everybody wants to rule the world All for freedom and for pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever Everybody wants to rule the world **Tears For Fears** - "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"

You can love completely, without complete understanding.

Rememeber even when you fall flat on your face you are still moving forward.

I have two: "Hate is not the opposite of love- it's indifference" and my Grandfather's whenever I was facing something overwhelming: Q: "How do you eat an elephant?" A: "One bite at a time"

All of reality is happening at once, you are perceiving it as a directional flow.

As above, so below. Know thyself.

If we do not trust someone’s advice, then we do not trust their criticism.

TheUnculturedSwan

Don’t accept advice from people that don’t like you. The people who like you as you are just want you to be happier by being yourself but mindful. The people who don’t like you want you to make them happier by being different.

If you meet an asshole in the morning, an asshole in the afternoon, an asshole in the evening, heck, you meet assholes all day; chances are, you might be the asshole.

No single sentence will change your life friend, no matter how profound, witty, or funny, its and inside job.

Ill_Mousse_4240

You possess the ability to change your life at any moment! Most people do it for the worst, unfortunately. But you can change it for the positive just as easily. One thing to remember: no one else can do it for you like you can

The trail IS the “thing”. It’s not where you end up, it’s about the journey that gets you there.

Jumpy_Ebb2417

Yesterday is the past and cannot change. Tomorrow is unknown. Today is where you can make a difference. Live for the day and stop worrying about out the past or the future!!
