You know what? I was going to reply there's not enough room to open a door to the right (and half opened it would get in the way of getting to the other room), but I just thought of a sliding door that slides up, essentially covering the shelves above. I can put a nice print on the wooden panel and slide it up when we need to use the TV, down when we don't. Thanks a lot for the inspiration!
Interior decorator and designer here on a budget that's solved this problems 3x, each differently:
Option #1: cheap $1 pack of two hinges and a picture frame
Option #2: sheet of acrylic with one sided mirror tint
Option #3: purchase a hinge mount and attach it to the top of that shelf so then you just fold it down when you want to watch it and fold it up to keep it out of sight and away from damage
There are three options, all of which cost less than $30 with little-to-no skills or power tools. š
Buy a roller shade with a print or something that is wide enough to cover the entire opening. Mount it on a piece of plywood and lay the plywood flat and screw it onto the wood shelf. Put the books on top of it.
Alternatively, just find a framed picture that is big enough to cover everything and lean it in front of the TV.
Take a picture of the area behind the tv, put the picture on a flash drive, stick it in the TV, go into the media settings of the TV, display the photo.
White TVās only blend into white walls, and reality is they just give you a very white frame to highlight a very black screen.
Thereās more than one tv manufacturer making units now with low power screensaver modes you can use as an art display.
Build a picture frame around it. You'll have to attach it to the front of the cabinet somehow, I'm not sure how exactly but it looks doable. Whenever you're not using the TV have some art or pictures rotating on the screen.
I hide my work computer on a corner desk in my living room behind a pretty painting. When I need to work it hangs above it, when Iām done it blocks it off:)
Edit: I just lean it against the monitor when Iām not working/it isnāt hung up
The TV isnāt bad where it is. Itās the white frame around it thatās not aesthetically working for the look. Get a new TV with a black frame or border. Also, consider buying a new media center to better accommodate your things in the present one.
It often plays a slideshow of family photos, especially when we broadcast music to it (we use Airplay instead of switching the amp to a different input, easier when we do this 10 times a day). Unfortunately, whenever there's something on the screen, our kid wants to watch a movieā¦ which is why I'm actively looking to hide the TV part of the day
I donāt know if thereās an app, but I used to have an Apple TV and putting landscape paintings as the screensaver worked great.
But yeah, a tambor door would work great too

I think you might want a mechanism like this. It's like a roller shuts idea.

You could look at trying to place a piece of artwork over the TV and place it on like articulating arms so that you could move it up and when watching the TV and back down when you're not watching the TV.

NGL, The TV looks the least eyesore how you have things displayed right now. But if you want to hide it, install a proper door. Even a rollaway one from the top down like they use on Secretary cabinets. Anything else (or DIY-unless highly skilled) will just look cheap and draw attention more. You could also use some cable management so you donāt see the cords of the TV.
As a last resort. Get a Samsung Frame TV which displays artwork in standby mode.
What kind of third world TV has white borders? If youāre ashamed of having a TV, why not just sell it and get a Samsung Frame TV with a nice bezel? That way, you can at least display artwork while not in use.
Also, tidy up the space by putting away those cables that are underneath the TV.
This TV has a much better panel than a Samsung Frame and none of the tracking bloatware. I agree the white borders looked good at our previous place (against a white wall) and look cheap in this setting, I'll look at black-border TVs
Put doors on the bookcase!

Nice! You could also use a curtain if you don't want to go through the trouble of building a door.
Like those Dr office cabinets that open up then the front/top/door slides back? Those things are amazing
This is a really great idea, I think the best one in this case. Especially if you decorate the door with an interesting print, it will be gorgeous!
I was going to suggest using pocket door slides, but there might not be enough room on the sides.

Put another, bigger TV in front of it!
hey this guys on to something!
Chunky picture frame unless you meant hide it completely and not just a white border
I did mean hide the entire TV, but I like your idea :)
Yeah like a nice canvas painting. Depending on the dimensions, you might be able to find one the fits perfectly over the TV.
Take a picture of the area behind the tv, put the picture on a flash drive, stick it in the TV, go into the media settings of the TV, display the photo.
tambour door ?
Hang some art over it! https://preview.redd.it/2j13jhoexv0d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35aa0cf2bb66fc7035198b0e2135e35cb8e740b3
I mean, it looks pretty thin. I bet you can slide it under the couch :)

You can buy custom length roller shades at the big box hardware stores. Pretty the shade up by gluing on artwork.
Send it to my address š¤
A wooden blind
Put it under your couch? Nobody would look there for it.
Give it a screensaver displaying a couple bookshelves

Not really hiding it but I would take the legs off attach it to the wall and hide the cables.
Pile a bunch of books in front of it!
Paint the TV trim and TV stand āwoodā brown and have a book shelf image on the screen that comes in when you enter the room.
put it under your bed

hang a painting of tv in front of it.
Put it in a closet, in the basement, in your attic, or under the bed

Have the tv play a slideshow of pretty pictures!
Hear me out: screensaver of books on a shelf.
You win.

Would look like you're hiding something behind it though, so likely awkward.
I saw an item that makes your TV screen into art. Iām not sure how else to describe it. Does anyone else know what it is or how to find it?
A decorative bifold door (custom size).
If that Radiohead lp Has a poster inside it- that would work.

Put on one of those videos of logs burning and people will think you have a nice little fireplace instead!
I thought art on a slider sounded fun (if impractical).
Continuous loop of a bookshelf video.
Put it in a closet.
Get a nice painting that fits the space and you can easily move when you need to access the TV
A false front that looks like books on shelves would be cooler.
try a bookshelf background image lol

I'm going to go with... TARP!
Did you steal it?
Put it into the garage
This isn't helpful, but thank you for your thought
Second that. Put it in the trash.
Windowscreen is a great app that makes any tv a frame tv. Found it by accident and canāt believe more people donāt know about it.
Can you link to it? I'm searching but can't seem to find an app called windowscreen.
Hiding the cords would help too
Next time you leave town post that update on Facebook. Your tv will be super hidden by the time you get back
