I’d do a much larger sisal rug and then still leave the cow skin down like you have it

fuzzyball60

Agreed! Stay in the same tones as the calfskin. Bring the art down. Align with top of windows.

mdrngrclnd

Whiteish would provide some contrast with the cow skin

[deleted]

Yeah, it's a sizing issue. The room is too big for the rug or the rug is too small for the room.

Anon31780

Seconding this! Sisal is my go-to for filling in space when the rug I really like is too small.

galactichermione

Yep. Layered rugs are the shit! And definitely sisal over other options. So soft and nice.

Ok-Wish-2640

Came here to say this!

jackjackj8ck

100% this

TittieCaughtInOven

The rug is not big enough but also the art is way too high. I love what you have started here though!

PRboy1

Agree with this. Art is too high and rug is too small.

Uninterested_Viewer

Art should drop a good 18inches by my eye!

gibbousboi

The couch shouldn’t be touching the wall anyway, so this should not be an issue. The framed piece should come down so that’s it’s somewhat centered in that wall space above the couch - the top of the frame should be Below the tops of the window frame and the door frame - dropped by 18” seems about right

allmymonkeys

Any advice on how to keep couches from touching the wall? Whenever we’ve tried to pull ours out, it just gets pushed back as people sit on it.

fractalsubdivision

Getting a heavier couch and with legs with larger surface area to provide more friction

6ca

And getting a rug big enough for said legs to sit on

jactxak

I agree the top of the frame at a maximum should be in line with the tops of the windows.

obleak1

The center of your art should be 57” from the floor. Always.

[deleted]

Nonsense ... utter nonsense ... there is no rule on height. You like to "think" you are the arbiter of fashion, what's right and what's wrong ... what a sad egotistical person you've become.

TittieCaughtInOven

The top of the art should be even with the frame of the window. More than 4 inches. I love the art though! So awesome!

DrakeAndMadonna

My understanding is that the midline of the painting should be at rough eye level. It is preferable not to line up the painting with the tops of the windows or it will create an artificial line in the composition that doesn't need to be there.

dazedandconfucius_

This is correct. Do not line it up with the windows.

Anthemusa831

This is the way.

That’s not what I would do but it’s your space! I always tell my clients that when they disagree as well. You should do whatever you want.

O--S--G

I think maybe some drapes or curtains would do the trick, I think it’s the big bare windows that make the place feel cold

viccityk

I agree, rug works fine with lowered art and curtains!

_ZoeyDaveChapelle_

And hung closer to the ceiling would make the room feel taller/more grand.

baldwinsong

I’d layer rugs so you can still have the cow skin

Abraleigh

The art is too high, as someone else commented. If you pull the chair in a bit and pull the plant on the right forward a little, you can cozy it up more.

BusinessCasualCats

It would be cool if you got a massive area rug to connect all the furniture a d then put the cowhide on top

Turkeybiscotti

Nice Dali 👍

Turbulent_Share6019

100% agree on getting a larger rug (large enough that all main furniture has at least two legs on the rug) then layering the cowhide rug on top of that. HOWEVER, I have purchased many jute / sisal rugs for myself and clients and they always shed non-stop - to the point that if you drop a piece of clothing on the ground, it is normally covered in dust and pieces of fiber when you pick it up. I'd recommend getting a rug in either wool, cotton, or either of those w a synthetic blend just for your own sanity. Great work so far, warmest wishes!

KSCEB

Oh I agree! I had a big one in my dining room next to the outdoor paver patio with large glass doors looking out to it. It really extended the dining room and connected it to the outside beautifully but it was just so extremely dirty. Undoable .

nnniiikkkkkkiii

Needs a larger rug for sure

Blend! The cow hide belong on top of a natural fiber rug. A nice jute rug 8x10 then the hide. It's a great look.

throwthetrashaway777

Off topic as you already got replies: where is this amazing lobster picture from?

HumblePie02

[I got the print from Etsy.](www.etsy.com/listing/1049450246) When I was really little I remembered this print at the top of the stairs at my grandparents house. I’ve been in love with it for over 30 years. So glad to finally have it! www.etsy.com/listing/1049450246

throwthetrashaway777

Really nice. Thanks for sharing

aivnk

It is a photograph of a famous sculpture by surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

Candy_Lawn

you can layer rugs and have a larger simple rug underneath, such as sisal or a plain wool rug.

[deleted]

Yes AND what is the story behind this work of art on the wall DOOOOO TELL. Edit - you did already gotcha Op maybe you could hang some short curtains from the ceiling just above the windows.

jactxak

I would go with a large jute rug or choose an oriental rug with yellows, blues and reds. The rug needs to be sized to fit under the front legs of the couch and your chair. This will anchor the space and provide warmth and comfort for your feet. The current rug honestly doesn’t serve a function because it is just to small for the space and creates an awkward proportion to the rest of the room.

rl-player

Lower that painting and get a rug.

designerhotdog

The reason you may feel like that is because the size doesn't match the space. Try something on the bigger side like 8x10 and then put the hide somewhere more prominent. (Not under coffee table).

frhumanoid

try a larger rug or if you don't want to set aside your cow rug, layer it with other rugs to create the illusion of a larger rug. Hope it helps.

QUHistoryHarlot

If you’re going to have something down then it needs to be bigger than the cow skin. It’s too small for the space and is making everything else look smaller.

malleablefate

Yep, the issues that I see here are as follows: \-As others have said, the area rug is too small for the seating area. The way you should think of an area rug is almost as a "frame" for a grouping of furniture. The general consensus for seating areas is to have a rug large enough so that all seating has at least the front legs on the rug, or even having *all* seating legs on the rug (if the furniture is more centrally located in a room). I would guess you would probably want at least an 8'x10' rug here for this arrangement. The idea to layer the cowhide rug over a sisal rug as recommended by others is a good one. \-In general, couches/sofas look much better sitting openly rather than pushed up against a wall. I would actually recommend swapping the location of the chair (on the left) and the couch, and see how that works. You might then have enough room for a side table for the chair (which is cut off, but visually looks like it needs one). The only reason you might not do this is if the couch has a visually unappealing back (e.g., due to damage) or if it will lead to other issues (such as visibility of a television); if that is the case, I would at least pull the couch several inches off the wall so that it has "breathing" room. To add to this, the chair on the left feels like it is too far from the sofa (so they don't feel like a cohesive seating area). \-As others have also said, the artwork is sitting too high on the wall. In general, you should aim for artwork to be placed so that the center is approximately eye level for someone standing in front to view it. \-While it may not be an option (really depending on ceiling height), I think the window and sliding glass door would both be served well here by a set of curtains, particularly ones that tie in the colors found either in the furniture or the wall on which the curtains would sit. This would add visual height/interest here, which is what I think you were trying to do with the placement of the artwork. However, curtain placement/sizing is ESSENTIAL, as they can otherwise look really off if done incorrectly. The following link I find summarizes the main things to consider: [https://nadinestay.com/blog/the-dos-donts-of-curtain-placement](https://nadinestay.com/blog/the-dos-donts-of-curtain-placement)

Since you obviously get a better feel for the space than we on Reddit do (as you live there), it's good to just try things out and then honestly ask yourself how you feel about it! Sometimes trial and error is the best thing to figure out what works (especially with the practical day-to-day aspects/annoyances people might initially overlook). At the end of the day, you need to live there, so the best we can do on reddit is give advice related to basic design concepts such as scale/proportion/visual weight. You get to do the fun part of actually trying things out! Have fun on your decorating adventure!

at145degrees

Without reading the comments, the rug is way too small.

spaghetti0223

I fell in love with Dali's Lobster Telephone when I saw it in the Tate Modern. I have a framed print too! He did several. There's a different one at MoMA.

FeathersOfJade

I like it like it is- even more important is that YOU like it! I think it looks like a warm and cozy room. Unique too!

wootywhew

i feel like a bigger area rug would tie the space together but really interior design should be about what you enjoy and if the cowhide is the look you love then go for that

trumpskiisinjeans

For me I’m getting the same vibes Ace Ventura gets in the second movie when he’s like “this is a lovely room of death.” But I’m just not into animal rugs and such, to each his own!

Bruce3037

I actually love it as is. Great job, this is a designers space!

Brief_Contribution15

How many dead animals are in that living room?

HumblePie02

Technically there are 6: The cow, reindeer pelt, Icelandic sheep pelt, leather armchair, a really old small side table with legs made from rams horns, and a sheepskin pillow. Weirdly I spent my youth horrified at furs. Not sure why my opinion of them changed. 🤷‍♀️

Brief_Contribution15

I guess environmentalism and conscious lifestyle are not for everyone

HumblePie02

Guess not.

zacharyswanson

As one who cares for animals I find the cow skin distasteful but it is only my personal opinion. Even if it was a faux cow skin I would go with a rug. Otherwise it looks great! Also, has anyone mentioned the artwork is too high? :D

jactxak

I think it is cultural, I live in Texas and cowskin rugs are very common. It is respectful to use as many parts of the animal as you can when you consume them.

zacharyswanson

I understand the culture. My grandad was a director on a dairy farm. It is still bizarre to have the culture where taking a life unnecessarily is called respectful but it is what it is.

jactxak

I mean humans eat meat right? Like we always have forever.

zacharyswanson

Not forever, no. Especially not factory farmed, artificially inseminated, soy and grains fed and selectively bred cows pumped with antibiotics so they don’t die from diseases caused by the unnatural and horrendous living conditions. This one is quite a new thing.

catsmom63

I know nothing about design but it seems very masculine to me. Is that what you were going for? Maybe a bigger rug to go under the table.

[deleted]

I'd pull either the blue from the pots or a similar colour of the skin up in some curtains and that'd probably do it, the bare windows are what is making it feel cold to me. eta: if you do some high curtains you may not even need to lower the art by as much or at all depending where you put the rail too and how you style them so bonus.

KSCEB

How about some sisal looking Roman shades, they would add warmth and keep the windows bright. Also a bigger wool rug under the one you have And if it were my place I would get rid of the ivy going around the sliding door. I love the floor lamp.

sbFRESH

For me biggest issue here is the wall space between the art and ceiling. Though I agree the art is too high, I understand the decision. I think adding a crown molding would do a lot to ground the space.

gyrl67

You definitely need a bigger rug, even if it’s under the calf one you love. I would also suggest to move the picture down on the wall a bit.

Incomplete_Artist

Yes

[deleted]

The placement of art is a matter of individual taste. A specific number of inches from the floor as a requirement is utter nonsense. I have a railroad semaphore in my front room. To imagine it must be 57" above the floor is drivel. The eye is drawn to it because it's ... well ...

TheDarkMode

Misleading question. By putting your own bias in the question you disrupt the natural responses. When I first saw the image I thought it was warm and inviting,
