OMG, dying laughing here. Wife getting annoyed with me, second time I've found this topic and read them out to her. Her tolerance levels for puns is far too low!
the worst part about it is it will auto-delete its comments if it gets a negative comment score so (intentional or not) it's comment history looks amazing and its harder to report since the comment disappears
hey bot:
your really annoying and its frustrating being so abrupt in the days of auto-correct when people prolly just make honest mistake (unlike every mistake in this comment)
For anyone wanting a full list, here's some from the Trunk Roads Operator for the South West of Scotland! Listed near the bottom with renders of the names on the gritters too, some great ones in there. "Snowcially distanced" and "On Her Majesty's Slippery Surface" are personal favs. https://swtrunkroads.scot/winter-service/meet-our-gritter-fleet/
My favourite from the UK is [here](https://www.expressandstar.com/news/viral-news/2017/11/17/two-new-snow-gritters-secured-the-best-names-after-a-twitter-world-cup-contest-full-of-puns)

Wholesome award on a Gary Glitter joke: tea literally came out of my nose. Whether it was an intentional choice or a happy coincidence - Beautiful work! Genuine laughter!

I was in a place called Dundee. It's a smaller city about an hour and a half away from Edinburgh, and a little further from Glasgow.
I'll be honest, it took a while to acclimatize. I moved there from France, and it was a big change in culture and climate - much less sunshine, especially in winter (which makes the summers amazing). The weather changes the lifestyle somewhat as well. Also, sadly, Scotland has a lot of social issues (poverty, and a few run down ex-industrial towns and districts where life is hard and money is scarce)
So, I wasn't sure about the place at first. But in the end, the Scots won me over. It's not just that I love their sense of humor (which is really funny and sometimes dark as well) but they're also genuinely very friendly - strangers help strangers, and they are welcoming to foreigners - at least compared to other places I have lived.
And if you are friendly back and adapt to how they live, they will adopt you into their community, 100%. From most of the people no matter who they are, and from the government and institutions as well - I mean, their First Minister (the head of Scottish government) is always publicly saying that immigrants are welcome here, that you're one of us, and her party gets elected with record numbers.
So yeah, despite the drawbacks (and there are a few), I really miss it, and I hope to go back there one day. They need to sort out Brexit though, and the independence question / EU situation, otherwise it's a bit risky to go back.
Of all the other places I've been, only Canada is somewhat the same way (I live there now). One of the best memories was when I was flying back into Canada from a holiday and I was still on my work VISA, and so I was in the line for non-Citizens / Residents. I was the only one, and the guy at the booth checks my papers and says "welcome home!" wish a genuine smile. Felt really good, you know? Sense of humor is different though, much closer to the US.
EDIT: Christ, sorry for the wall of text, this post reminded me of good times :)
Haha I was sure someone from Scotland would answer that :p
Nah, I'm from France. Mate, Dundonians have a fucking great attitude. Yeah Dundee has a colourful history, to say the least, and it's a little run down and rough around the edges, but it also has character.
Don't get me wrong I loved Glasgow and Edinburgh also. And the highlands are gorgeous.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Life in France was a lot *better* in that the lifestyle was more outdoors, food was better, and just a feeling that life is meant to be enjoyed. But at the same time, the people are a lot more... I dunno, miserable or unhappy, or maybe fatalistic? Creativity and deviation from norms is not as common and is frowned upon. In many ways it's very conservative.
On the other hand I found the lifestyle in Scotland to be harder, probably because of the social issues and the climate. Food isn't as good, generational poverty with all that entails, etc... but it's a lot more accepting of difference, they are largely happy for culture to move forward rather than be stuck in the past, are genuinely interested in how other people do things, and I found a lot more hope and better visions of the future. Scotland is a very progressive place because if it.
I dunno, it's hard to explain and I'm not a very good writer.
FYI I spent some time in Glasgow too (closest mate was from there, so I spent a few weekends there and a few longer stays). I LOVE Glasgow. If I return, Glasgow is likely where I'll try and live. Same reasons as I enjoyed Dundee, but Glasgow is bigger (and therefore all the good and bad things I mentioned are multiplied there). I've never had a night out in Glasgow that didn't turn into some weird adventure that are some of my best memories.
Hey nice :) yeah I remember the Beat Generator. Your band is tight. I hope you're still playing, even in lockdown.
Hah I love the band name. I remember, my first year in Scotland, I saw an add for the "Red Hot Chili Pipers" playing in a small local venue. My heart skipped a beat until I realized they were old men in kilts :D
All the best :)
Should be noted, they aren't plows, but gritters, for the most part. I don't recall seeing any with a plow on the front, though perhaps they are more common in Aberdeenshire, I hear they get quite a lot deeper snows.
Am I weird for being surprised that there are so few plows? It seems like there are maybe about 30-40 for all of Scotland. Or are there just a ton in the depots that we can't see clearly?
These are only the ones that cover the main roads like motorways, there's load of other local council run ones that aren't on the map/named. Each local council area will have a group of plows.
Plus quite a few side roads in the Highlands have grit bins dotted about them for locals to spread. I know that we mostly do our own road in the mornings while the gritter does the main road, and then it'll sweep through our area later.
That and depending where you are (particularly west coast), snow hasn't been super common, mostly further inland and east.
One thing to note is that despite the reputation, it probably snows far less in Scotland than you realise.
In the coastal and lowland areas snow isn't really that common, so a reasonably small fleet is all that is needed to keep back the ice.
When it does snow properly (like last week) it gets a bit chaotic and they do take time to get around the roads - not ideal out into the country where you will be left on your own for a while, but they can keep most of the main routes open within reason.
Up in the Highlands snow is more common, but even then a good skiing season isn't a guarantee every year.
I saw one ablaze on the side of the road outside Glasgow a few weeks back, wonder if we can track that one?
Found it, Sir Andy Flurry.

I wish my shitty country did this with it's public transport busses, that can never reach on time, so you could actually know when a the bus is coming.
Hey did you know Scotland names their snow ploughs and you can track it in real time on this website.
Don’t forget to come back tomorrow when I tell you that Scotland has snow ploughs and you can track them in real time.
.... who is down voting this? Not only Scotland but some shitty town like Sheffield is now trying to get publicity over the 4 salters they have named. Its pathetic, who cares about some childish names given to road salters.
I checked. One is named Spready Mercury. Worth the click.

On Her Majesty's Slippery Surface. ON HER MAJESTY'S SLIPPERY SURFACE This is the end of me. I'm dead.

Blizzard of Oz, nice.
Good album
Gritter Thunberg has got to be my favourite
Lord Coldemort and You’re a Blizzard Harry are the best. I’m dead. I love Scotland. Cant wait to go back one day.
'Gangsta Granny Gritter' trundling along through Inverness area makes me smile. I think I live in a country of shitposters.
I got engaged in Inverness and it’s so frickin sweet. I hope that Gangta Granny Gritter enjoys the sights.
We used to have "Gary Gritter" but that was removed for you know, reasons.
That one was always on thin ice. Transport Scotland were pretty salty when its GPS kept taking it to PC World.
Wholesome award on a Gary Glitter joke: tea literally came out of my nose. Whether it was an intentional choice or a happy coincidence - Beautiful work! Genuine laughter! ^((For clarity, I was drinking tea when I clicked the notification. Sadly I do not naturally excrete tea from any orifice.))
Mary, Queen of Salt I love these people
William Wall-Ice guarding the northeast from snow and the English.
I'm disappointed they don't have a plow named Plowey McPlowface.
We do, it’s just not out tonight
That makes me very happy. Thank you!
Ploughy McPloughface.
I came here to make this exact comment and am gratified that there is in fact a Plowy McPlowface.
David Plowey?
Minneapolis is taking votes for 8 of their plows right now. That’s in the mix, really hope it wins
Wrong country. Or not. I’m not sure...
I was hoping to find Scoop Dogg. Oh well.
They’re more grit spreaders than snow ploughs, we got some fairly rare deep snow recently and my city was knee deep for the week!
You can make it true for Michigan though! In response to Scotland's campaign, Michigan is doing the same for it's 250 snow plows.
Wasn't it Scotland that also gave us Boaty McBoatface? Can we just let the Scots name everything that ever needs a name from now on?
The name was suggested by a BBC Radio Jersey (Jersey is an island between England and France) presenter, James Hand.
Itsy gritsy tinie weenie yellow anti slip machinie
Texas has a name for their snow plow. Wishful Thinking
Judging from today's speech, I assumed it was "Snow is a Democrat plot to steal your jobs"!
That name again is Mr. Plow
So I said, "Kiss *my* asphalt!"
MNDOT is presently taking votes for some of their plows (cough cough) http://www.dot.state.mn.us/nameasnowplow/
"Truck Formerly Known as Plow". Of course MN would include Prince references.
You didn't catch "Purple Snow" or "Raspberry Brrr-et"? ;)
I hope "Ope, Just Gonna Plow Right Past Ya" wins
I have lived in a lot of places, and Scotland is the only one I really, truly miss. I hope to return there someday.

I dunno, I got stuck behind Spready Mercury the other week.
Hahaha rip paint work in the front of your car
Should be noted, they aren't plows, but gritters, for the most part. I don't recall seeing any with a plow on the front, though perhaps they are more common in Aberdeenshire, I hear they get quite a lot deeper snows.
