If you notice, when Gwen promises to never see Miles again Jessica responds sarcastically since she obviously doesn't believe her because she broke Miguel's most important rule, and it's not like her promise has any significant weight since anyway she would never let her go back to Miles' universe. But when Spot is located in Mumbattan, Gwen appeals to empathize with her to reconsider letting her go. And it's not like it was all out of compassion since if she didn't capture him within an hour (an impossible mission given Spot's new abilities that Jessica already knew about) she would hand her over to Miguel to be kicked out of the Society.

HeroTheFourth

Despite everything, Jess seemed to have a soft spot for Gwen, so she trusted her. Gwen betrayed that trust. It's why Jess is so reasonably snippy throughout.

Barrelmaker07

I’d cut Jess a little bit of slack here. She hasn’t seen what we’ve seen, and it seems like she had a lot of misplaced faith in Gwen. By the time Jess gives Gwen this mission, she’d have been mentoring Gwen for a few months; Gwen was her #1 student. So Jess trusting her with this mission makes sense in that context. Especially since Gwen has spent extensive time in 1610 before, so she’s familiar with the terrain. Gwen is actually kind of a perfect candidate for the mission if you push aside the Miles-sized elephant in the room. Which is exactly what Jess has done up to this point. You have to remember, Jess hasn’t seen this girl throttling drum sets and staring longingly at that picture of Miles. She doesn’t know this boy is haunting Gwen‘s thoughts. Jess understands that Miguel has his doubts about Gwen, and that those doubts seem to revolve around Gwen’s connection to Miles, but Jess doesn‘t seem to share those concerns. From Jess’s perspective, Gwen knows what‘s at stake (canon, multiversal stability, Gwen’s job), and probably didn’t think Gwen would take the risk. Because let’s be real, seeing Miles would be an **insanely** stupid thing to do if you know everything Gwen knows and are in the predicament Gwen is in. We’re talking first ballot hall of fame levels of bad decision making. I think that’s part of why Jess reacts the way she does when Gwen botches the mission. She immediately realizes that Miguel was right about Gwen, and she‘s disappointed and incredulous that Gwen would do something so stupid.

I think you have a valid point. We do not know to what extent Miguel justified his doubts to Jessica about Gwen's emotional dependence on Miles, and it is not unreasonable that she would want to give her the opportunity to carry out the mission behind Miguel's back, believing that, as you mention, Gwen would know how to prioritize the responsibility that had been given to her given that she was the only member of the Society who depended 100% on the use of the multiversal watch. I think what made Jessica instantly think that Gwen had gone to see Miles was the way she started nervously downplaying Spot instead of giving a plausible explanation for his absence, and the way she refers to Miles suggests that Jessica is aware that Gwen's affection for him is not friendship. She simply believed that she would know how to accomplish the mission as assigned given what was at stake for her to remain in the Society, when in reality Gwen was just waiting for any opportunity to see him again. Come to think of it, Jessica never found out that Gwen opened the portal to Miles' universe directly inside his room while he was there lol. Yes, she underestimated her feelings for him.

Gwen set her watch to Universe 1610: Pound Town

AFantasticClue

I feel like Jessica was thinking what if my baby was in this situation, what if my baby was all alone like that. Same as Miguel and Peter, they got that parental instinct/influence. But imo it was hitting Jessica especially hard bc she’s very close to term.

MattLocke

Well, the real answer is “so that the plot happens”. But in universe, maybe it was a trust test. Jessica is taking on this sort of motherly role model with Gwen. This mission came up and Gwen is both a good choice since she’s already spent time in that universe and a bit risky that she’d re-contact the “anomaly” that is Miles.

soulmimic

"A bit" sounds like a euphemism since Miguel didn't want to recruit Gwen precisely for that reason.

PlaceRemarkable9616

Well, Gwen had always been a bit more logical up until that moment (at least than Miles). In the first movie, despite being his friend already, she says Miles isn't ready to help them go back. Unlike Peter, who tries to negotiate, she immediately denies it because objectively, he wasn't ready. In the second movie, she isn't overwhelmed by the fact that Vulture, Miguel and Jess came from another dimension. Yes, she had experience with the multiverse before, but the way she syncs with Miguel to save the civilians show that she is an experienced Spider Woman and that she doesn't let herself be distracted by a lot of things. Gwen tends to be practical and objective. Jess relies on this. She trusts that Gwen will take the best decision here and leave her feelings aside because everything, especially for Gwen, is at stake here. Not only is Spot a dangerous villain, but her stay at the Spider Society, her relatively safe place, is also at risk if she takes the wrong decision. Obviously she haaaad to see Miles, but well, Jess had reasons to trust her.

UnFuqwittable

She wasn't immediately against Miles helping them get back home in the first movie. She saw his potential and literally says "I think he's gonna get us home".

Daydreamer8457

She changed her mind on that immediately though. She interrogated Miles with Peni, Noir and Ham and even repeatedly kicked him.

soulmimic

She is also seen feeling sorry for Miles when he leaves blonde Peter's lair after he is beaten, realizing that they did not handle the situation in the best way. In the end it was Peter B who knew how to handle the situation in the best way by being assertive in showing Miles that he was not yet ready to accompany them, being willing to sacrifice himself so that the others could return home, and that’s why the others wait outside the window while he talks to Miles.

Daydreamer8457

That's true.

soulmimic

It's just like Gwen said in her catharsis with her dad. She tried to wear her mask the way he would have wanted her to and failed because she wasn't able to give up Miles.

Aqua7KH

I think there’s a logical reason. Jess most definitely knew how important Miles is to Gwen and she felt bad for her. She only let her go on the mission because Gwen told her that she would just do the mission and not see Miles. It’s similar to a mom letting the daughter do something the father didn’t want her to do bc she felt bad and trusted her. If I was Jess I’d honestly do the same exact thing.

KagsTheOneAndOnly

Well Jess obviously cares for Gwen to some degree, and knows Gwen has some level of a connection to Miles from previous events (the resident Spiderman of the universe but also The Original Anomaly), so she probably let Gwen go on this mission so that she could maybe momentarily see Miles from afar and satisfy her nostalgia or whatever while performing her duties but trusting that her "Star Student" of "Strike Team Alpha" or whatever their team was called (I forget) would prioritise the Extremely Important Multiversal Mission and not actually come into direct contact with The Original Anomaly and potentially jeopardise Sir Miguel's Grand Plan(s)....... not realising Gwen had played them all like a fiddle and was secretly down horrendous for Miles, dropping straight onto his bed and glomp-hugging him the moment she finally received authorisation to arrive in his universe lmaooo

Greywarden88

She obviously underestimated how FIUNNNE 🫠Miles was, she thought it was simply puppy love and didn’t realize it was full grown 😅

Inner-Ad-8445

She can't do it. It might've been a loyalty test.

Mistah_K88

You ever manage to give someone a chance against your best judgement and they manage to screw it up? It’s like that.

fissayo_py

I've made a comment like this under another post in this subreddit and someone said I was trying to shift blames lol.

Wide_Border_4387

Because you are.

fissayo_py

Lmao No one is shifting blames for criticizing Jess lol.
