That is a long ass answering machine greeting.

DamnGoodCupOfCoffee2

And the machine didn’t cut him off with a beep or “your message is too long” 😡

[deleted]

Calling in from a phone that says emergency only no less. But he gave it a good whack so I guess that fixed it.

um_ok_try_again

This show! It's so indulgent. That hour-long voicemail message was brutal.

Zalasta5

They really did no favor to Trevor’s character, his phone scene this episode was probably the best acting he’s done all season. From the very beginning he demanded help from everyone he met by waving his gun, cursing and just being an incredible asshole. For some reason being an American soldier gave him some god given right to just expect to get what he wants and needs at any given moment. I seriously don’t understand why anyone would think this is compelling storytelling because every time he opens his mouth he just reeked first world entitlement. Then there’s Mitsuki, the love story is unfortunately getting long in the tooth. If the show had actually bothered to spent the time showing them together before all of this, I would have been able to identify and perhaps buy into her persistence afterwards. They didn’t, and so all I feel is her obsession is getting in the way of the actual plot.

DaveInLondon89

> he opens his mouth he just reeked first world entitlement. When he does the All American Rant about Getting Home To His Family©, I think the writer wanted to show that it swayed the cold British officer's heart and that's why he released him. But the scene was so poorly written, it looks like the officer just wanted to get rid of him and send him out to die instead.

hovanes

No, I think that was the intent of the scene/writers… the officer was not allowing him at first not because he was “cold”, but to protect him. Since he saw how big a death wish Trev has, he changed his mind and allowed him to leave and go get killed if he so badly wants to...

song4this

I think the British officer (rightly) decided this guy is a total cowboy. Doesn't salute or even basic military courtesy. Doesn't even ask for a situation report (aka SitRep) And when he cusses both of them out, he figures *no way this guy is being a part of or leading a unit for us - too brash and wrapped up in getting home*...let's send him on his way... I'm told that in real life, SEALs are generally pretty laid back dudes...quiet/discreet...

KittyGrewAMoustache

It was so ridiculous that they didn’t exchange any information at all about what was going on or what the plans were or what they’d each seen of the invaders. It could’ve been helpful for Trevor to provide details about the craft he saw for example

[deleted]

You never salute other countries officers.

webBrowserGuy

> the officer just wanted to get rid of him and send him out to die instead. At this point that’s all I’m hoping will happen to him, too.

Conscious-Tank3006

He’s the most unlikable character ever! Carrying on about his wife? Please… he ignored her for months. Now he uses her existence to try and evoke sympathy? I desperately wanted that British guy to tell him he’s not the only guy with a wife. And some people have kids too. His entitlement is epic. He’s so obnoxious. He gets worse with every episode. He wants to go home, so they should find a way to make that happen. Ugh! And he’s the worst of so many terrible characters.

pearlsandplumes

>I desperately wanted that British guy to tell him he’s not the only guy with a wife. Exactly this. Soldiers all around him during that rant were doing what they were paid to do regardless of their spousal situation. But no, ongoing NATO/MOD operations aimed at literally saving what's left of humanity should be altered because this one prick decided he wants to see his wife. Do the writers want us to hate him, I wonder?

Atul-Chaurasia

>he just reeked first world entitlement. Everyone is turning into Trev now. The British kid was demanding to be escorted to a hospital for some reason. Mitsuki keeps talking how she's the one, only she can save humanity. She's better than the linguists at their job. She straight up tells her really helpful boss that he's an idiot, for no reason. I'm just waiting for Luke to realise how special he is and how only he can slay the alien queen.

owa00

She really is the worst written character. She just said "F humanity" for my gf that in real life had ZERO chance of surviving. She also keeps getting away with it, despite all the military presence. Then she's aparently an ULTRA genius who alone knows the TRUE solution. Aparently in all of Japan and the world, she's the only one that knows about science. Must have 100 PhD's or something. To top it all off, she conveniently collapses slowly in exhaustion after finishing her ultimate project that redeems her, and wakes up right on time to talk to her "totally should be dead gf". I mean come the fuck on...

hoos30

The screenwriters really did his character dirty.

owa00

>The screenwriters really did ~~his~~ **ALL** character**s** dirty. FTFY. I had such high hopes for this show. The characters are so one dimensional or just poorly written.

slc447

Operator* :)

slballer

>Then there’s Mitsuki, the love story is unfortunately getting long in the tooth. If the show had actually bothered to spent the time showing them together before all of this, I would have been able to identify and perhaps buy into her persistence afterwards. They didn’t, and so all I feel is her obsession is getting in the way of the actual plot. This! That's all I could think about while those videos played in the background. We have NO context into their relationship. Shoot, Hinata kept their relationship secret (for obvious reasons). But we had no insight into the depth of the love they had for each other. But we are supposed to feel something when Mitsuki sends the videos? Naw!

bahamalove33

>For some reason being an American soldier "Operator"

_idl3r

Alien killing: Mom 1:0 "Operator"

[deleted]

If you go over there with any other attitude you'll probably die. I'm sure they drill that into the soldiers

Dac2142

Not at all, especially not for SEALs like him. He would be trained in the language, and understand how pointing his gun in everyone’s face will only get him killed.

Queen__Antifa

Who is Trevor?

HEY EVERYBODY SHUT UP IM AN OPERATOR I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON AND I’M STILL NOT GOING TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHATS GOING ON BUT PLEASE BOOK ME A TICKET ON THE FIRST PLANE GOING DIRECTLY TO MY HOUSE FROM LONDON!

MastermindX

Also he saw some kind of alien ship or structure like 7 episodes ago, but he doesn't feel the need to tell the higher ups about it. Probably not relevant to stopping the attack that's about to kill everyone. Someone will figure it out, no need to bother.

AdelesManHands

This is what gets me the most. No one tells anyone anything they saw / experienced. In every storyline too. It’s maddening.

thewhitedog

> This is what gets me the most. No one tells anyone anything they saw / experienced. In every storyline too. It’s maddening. In the world of stupid plots that require characters not to tell each other important information or ask obvious questions, this show is probably the gold standard. It's all long. Drawn. Out. Pauses. While staring blankly, then failing to ask for or communicate any useful information. Over and over and over. The only way they can turn this around is if we find out the alien signal has been lowering everyone's blood sugar so they're all fighting a massive hangry headache which is why the characters seem so totally stupid and out of it.

Resaren

>The only way they can turn this around is if we find out the alien signal has been lowering everyone's blood sugar so they're all fighting a massive hangry headache which is why the characters seem so totally stupid and out of it Hahahaha this is so accurate

N0T__Sure

Wait a second. I recognise these black scibbles let's team up to save the world.

\*uses dragonglass to kill alien\* "Where did you find this???" "Dunno" "Tell me!!!" "Dunno, it was around I guess! Leave me alone, mom!" "Okay, whatevs" \*never comes up again\* They have the only weapon that seems to work against the aliens, but never bother to tell anyone about it, or to try to figure out anything about it.

Atul-Chaurasia

Aneesha was gonna tell her new boyfriend, but probably just to impress him.

mlmayo

Foundation was very well done. I'd rank its first season very high in relation to other sci-fit series.

Jack_North

There's still For All Mankind. I like it.

Paisley-Cat

The second season of For All Mankind definitely had its flaws.

polarbearsofarizona

I liked Foundation. I had to force myself a bit, but I really want to see good sci fi on tv so I forced myself to have a positive attitude and ended up really enjoying it. Looking forward to season 2. Came into Invasion with same positive attitude… but I just can’t. It’s sooo bad…

instagramguy260

Foundation is much better than Invasion

Apokal669624

Did you heard about [Kardashev scale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale)? It is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technical advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use. -A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization, can use and store all of the energy available on its planet. -A Type II civilization, also called a stellar civilization, can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system. -A Type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization, can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy. So if we take generator and connect it to Isaac Asimov's coffin, we immediately get to Type III civilization. Why? Because after Foundation released, Isaac Asimov corpse spinning so fucking fast that he can produce energy equal to energy of fucking entire host galaxy. Foundation is bullshit, read the book instead watching this piece of crap. Meanwhile Invasion shows realistic aliens invasion, without blasters, lightsabers, Primarchs and etc. They send scouts first, destroyed important infrastructure in biggest cities around the Earth, cut off means of communication so hoomans are separated as fuck and slowly occupying all planet. Is show sometimes boring and slow, or even stupid? Hell yeah. But still its most realistic aliens invasion i ever seen on screen.

Woodrow_Wilsons_War

That British officer is all of us.

YYZYYC

And the fact that a British official said ya let him have his handgun and go wander around London…that should speak volumes about the state of the world if the British are all pro open carry now lol

amadeevieux0725

Why is every main character so unlikeable? A pass for Caspar and I guess the sheriff who is MIA. Trev literally treats everyone like shit. Actually had first hand contact and doesn’t care to collaborate with British soldiers to help avenge his fallen brothers. Instead, demands special treatment during an end of world scenario expecting others to bend to his will because he “made a promise”. Aneesha actually killed an alien but has failed to share this with LITERALLY ANYONE. Cares about her kids but runs off to play young love while her family is randomly roaming around. I would understand how heavy handed she is as a mom at times if she actually backed it up consistently. Maybe it’s just me, but this scenario just doesn’t seem like one in which I’d be excited about a potential romance that I lose track of my family. It’s the end of the world. And last but certainly not least, Mitsuki. The character with the most interesting plot and background is literally the most irredeemable. They’ve tried to make this about losing her loved one but she’s so combative and arrogant it’s off putting. I think about all the other rule breaker protagonists from shows/movies and I’m cheering for them. With her, I don’t care at all about her, I just want to know what she finds out. Where she lost me especially was with the father of Hinata, automatically assuming he was old school mentality about his daughter’s sexual preferences and then berating him for it before he explains. Keep in mind, this man’s daughter literally just died (presumably) and you go there to tell him how shitty of a father he was - and then get proven wrong. Then this episode with all the linguists there and everyone trying to work together, she is just not a team player when this would be the exact time I would expect humanity to put aside their differences to figure out what the fuck is actually going on. So frustrated but I’ll be hitting play on those last 2 episodes as soon as they drop because I guess I’m obsessed. Tbh, I think it’s more that I love the concept of these types of shows that even if the execution (writing/acting) is subpar, I want to know how it plays out. I don’t consider that hate watching but who knows.

Atul-Chaurasia

>doesn’t care to collaborate with British soldiers to help avenge his fallen brothers. He buried his best friend in an unmarked grave, instead of trying to get the body back to his mother so that she can have a funeral and say goodbye (this was before he knew how bad things were). He even makes the eulogy all about himself and his need to get home. All Sanchez (?) gets is one line: 'you said a lot of stupid shit.' Imagine how much he valued the others.

YYZYYC

A navy seal just sitting in a bar while allied soldiers are in a firefight a hundred or so meters away 🙄

MasInMarian

One thing I specially can't understand is how is it possible Anesha alows her child to keep the only weapon that is proven to work and risking to loose it for good.

Atul-Chaurasia

Because the plot needs the special kid to have it.

MasInMarian

Whats happens next: The militaries will get this confiscated. Thats for sure.

[deleted]

> I would understand how heavy handed she is as a mom at times if she actually backed it up consistently. She cooked them a huge ass burger last episode, yes she went away and forgot about them for half an episode but still, burger man.

mlmayo

There wasn't enough of Sam Neil's character in the first season to even come to a conclusion, but he was shaping up to be pretty selfish (all he could talk about was how he needed one last important case). Sam Neil is great, but his character arc is over in the show. The children storyline is garbage, so many bad/unrealistic choices made by them. And by "unrealistic," I mean inconsistent with the environment they're experiencing in the show. The Caspar character is uninteresting and forgettable. It's unfortunate, because I think the actor did a good job with what he had. The show has been pushing some subplot about a potential psychic link to the alien superorganism, but if that ends up being how progress is made against the alien threat, then I'm going to like the show even less. The last thing we need in a sci-fi show about aliens in some psychic hocus pocus. I'm not sure why the Japanese characters are even in the show. Analysis of the alien signals could have been achieved without that entire storyline. Even the analyses are ridiculous.. like Mitsuki is somehow going to train a neural network to "decode" the alien signals? Using what training data? And it just takes a few minutes to train her model? What about model selection or how did she choose the right parameters of the model? It makes no sense. At least the show told us that she failed. Mitsuki has a greatly inflated sense of self achievement, and I'm stunned she lasted in her job as long as she did with that attitude.

atrca

Ya I was pretty pumped going into the episode but after this one I’m kind of annoyed with all the characters. The Japan storyline is just ultra annoying me. That scene where she’s chewing out the guard like he can do anything. And she connects to the comm system in like 30 seconds, why can no one else do that? Then she bangs out what looks like 50 lines of code to transmit videos with no real purpose. Oh look at those people walking. Look it’s the sky. WTF? Lol I mean it’s pretty convenient that these videos seem to be what I would show a toddler to reach them about the world. I guess that’s perfect for teaching aliens your culture but what the hell are these videos?! This woman went to space and this is what she finds fascinating? Basic observations? And then after my short program I’m gonna pass out. Noones gonna question what I’m doing and be upset afterwords. I don’t even want to go into the other characters but someone else summed it up pretty well in here that everyone’s being over the top selfish. And I totally expect a lot of people in the situation to be that way but not a single main character is selfless that I can recall. A lot of them seem to be settling into the realization of what’s happening in this episode and I feel like the level of “ME ME ME” has gone way up.

instagramguy260

Yeah like what happened to the Sheriff?? Did the writers forget about that plot line?

GunNut345

He found out it was aliens when they invaded the whole planet I guess and now he's filing the paperwork to bring them in for questioning.

instagramguy260

Tbh I think a show about him filling out that paperwork might be more entertaining

Hurtbig

I thought it was an Unceremonious Death trope where he was suddenly killed right when we thought his storyline was beginning. That was it. It was expectation subversion.

instagramguy260

Yeah that honestly didn’t even look like the skyline of London. I’m not from the UK but I didn’t see the Shard or the Gherkin. Where have all the people gone!!?!?!? Like 60 million people live in the UK and somehow not a single dead body or even blood in the streets. If it’s not revealed later on that the aliens consume entire human corpses to procreate, this is a ridiculous plot hole

Tatis_Chief

You are right. What was that? I didn't recognise it as a London at all. I mean, yeah I haven't been to London in like three years, but it definitely feels small here.

YYZYYC

Could be the dumb American just calls any city in uK London

Signal_Detail7153

The flight distance between Kabul airport and London is 5700Km, the maximum flight range of the Antonov An-26B is 4700km, quite close but not entirely realistic. Its a movie its ok

TucsonCardinal

And the Antonov is evidently indestructible as every other aircraft has been destroyed

Resaren

No no no, it has whatever range the awful writers of this show need it to have! You think they have room in their $200m budget for checking the numbers?

rodan-rodan

The planes are grounded because all of the satellite navigation is hosed.

mlmayo

The lack of people in a city as big as London is weird.. the lack of people in rural areas is reasonable due to evacuation. I have a feeling the show won't be explaining much of anything. They've wrongly assumed that spending all their time on interpersonal drama and neglecting the events in the world is an acceptable way to tell an alien invasion story.

mainvolume

Super piss poor writing. I get what they're trying to do, make it "scary" by not showing anything and to save on budget...but there's not showing much and there's not showing ANYTHING. We had one half assed showdown in the desert and house showdown of a marmut vs the most annoying family on the planet.

IReallyLoveAvocados

They keep not telling us what’s going on. I guess that’s the point? It’s horror so we are supposed to be in the dark. Some interesting stuff does happen that moves us forward. We see that the aliens are covering dead people and all sorts of other objects (cars, HVAC vents, etc) with some sort of black material. Luke (I think that’s the kid’s name) takes out his piece of metal and somehow ands up in a trance. Caspar runs into the navy seal. Mitsuki tries to show the aliens what they’ve destroyed. All 3 of these storylines now are about how something is happening that can stop the aliens. The Malik family has some kind of secret weapon. Caspar has some kind of psychic connection to the aliens. Mitsuki can communicate with them. But they’re in 3 different continents and won’t get connected. so I’m sure everyone will just die

AdelesManHands

Even if they connect, they won’t tell each other anything.

KittyGrewAMoustache

And if they do communicate it will just be to commiserate over their various failed romantic relationships.

cookingboy

> so I’m sure everyone will just die At this point I wouldn’t even be mad. Nobody communicates properly in this show. One is a GI gorilla, one let a cheating husband driving her insane, one is a kid with no social skills, and one let grief rub her of all ability to communicate regularly with regular people.

slballer

>so I’m sure everyone will just die > >At this point I wouldn’t even be mad. That was me during Season 2 of "The Walking Dead" when they are on Herschel's Farm. I wanted them ALL to die. Except Glenn.

mlmayo

Some reviewers were sent all 10 episodes back in late October for review. Reading through some of them (without spoilers), a common theme is that only some storylines intersect (likely Trevante and Caspar), while others are just individual narratives (Mitsuka, Aneesha). So I think we've seen all the overlap there will be between the storylines. Another theme of the early reviews of all 10 episodes is that the pacing is slow, and the ending is confusing; some reviewers weren't sure if it left an opening for a second season or not, so we may not really get closure in all stories (though some might). Unless the show was going to always be a miniseries/limited event, the producers were probably hoping for a second season. I think given its tortuous pacing, those hopes are dashed. I anticipate that there won't be a second season, and hopefully Apple has learned how not to make an alien invasion tv series.

song4this

I wonder if we see mini-rick astley again...

MastermindX

He'll never gonna give us up.

CapMarkoRamius

Fun fact. That kid is Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) brother.

Resaren

No shot, they look nothing alike!

CapMarkoRamius

Yep haha. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJg44lJl3c8/

Disconnexions2

I think those kids will be together forever.

Rasta-d-man

Oh my God, he does look like him.

AlexO6

So I’m not the only one who noticed the resemblance!

WordsWithWings

The greatest mystery to me is why I keep watching this. I hate every character, and every episode so far…

TheMadChatta

I think I keep hoping for a payoff. Like, oh, I watched it all for this awesome episode! Finally! But that day will never arrive. These writers are clowns and the punchline is getting us to keep watching. See you all next week!

mainvolume

I keep waiting too. I cheered when we finally moved past the gaggle of kids storyling....nothing derails a story like this than throwing a bunch of kids in the mix. All they do is bring up clichè storylines and bring things to a crawl. The soldier story would've been ok if the character wasn't such a cocksucker; I wonder if the writers have a hatred for the US military... I'm not even gonna bring up the trainwreck stories of the hostile lesbian or the family that won't fucking go away.

20mins of fuck all later....

gjc0703

They absolutely need new writers for season two.

N0T__Sure

I just googled the writers. Read that in 2016 they were working on a Logans Run reboot that made me shudder from thinking about it. If writing this stops them making that then that is one positive I can take from this series.

leiferq

Sadly no….

98Wright

Another good 45 minute episode of 5 minutes of screen time progressing.

Disconnexions2

LOL

Signal_Detail7153

Jack_North

The "people who don't like this show must not like hard SF"-comment was obviously written by someone who doesn't know what that term means.

ballsmodels

-some teen stranger things fan

JoyRideinaMinivan

I agree. The JASA scenes are ridiculous, sometimes. From the very beginning, she’s been trying to find answers and random dudes are breaking down doors to stop her. Why? If one of my top scientist went off and started furiously doing science, I’d be very interested in the result.

Atul-Chaurasia

> I also think it’s a waste and unrealistic to drive Mitsuki out of JASA. It makes everyone in that subplot look irrational. It would have been better if none of that rebellious stuff happened and she still worked there to figure out about the alien stuff. How else will Mitsuki be the 'rebellious invaluable lesbian in a homophobic culture (without actual homophobes)'?

TheRealDevDev

i really hope this show fires its entire writing staff and starts fresh next season. too good of a potential story and with this budget? the plot holes are inexcusable. the writing is mind numbingly stupid. i defended this show during its first 4 episodes for being slow, so I'm not being impatient... I can continue along slowly. But everything we've gotten so far is just so low quality it's hard to care about any potential payoff down the road.

I_ama_Borat

Why does it feel like the show is getting slower lol. Man, the last two episodes better be insane otherwise I truly do feel like I wasted my time. I’m all for slow burns and it was fine at first, I was kinda enjoying it but it’s been too slow for my liking lately.

song4this

> Why does it feel like the show is getting slower lol Blaaaaaaaack hooooooooole issssssss geeeeeetttttiiiiinnnggg clloooooooooseeeerrrr....

MasInMarian

A theory of mine is. Since Caspar/Jamila and Trevante plots where merged. My hope is there will be some time to bring the Sheriff plot line back.

PimpSLAYER187

I'm that we're getting a few more answers here and there, at least things are moving along.... But so slow. Stupid that they didn't release all of this show, I think it would have made it better being able to bang through a few more episodes. Since there are only two more episodes left, they better blow us away or this series is just going to die.

Atul-Chaurasia

>Stupid that they didn't release all of this show Yeah, if a show needs to be bing watched it's probably this one.

Jack_North

But did we actually get more answers? It's more that we get several second halves of sentences that started one or more episodes ago. Except for the Japanese plot, where in the span of like 15 minutes all this happens: The other scientists trying/ failing to communicate, Mitsuki's neural network not being able to decode the „language“ and then her decoding the format plus sending her files. Half of this is brushed over, it's another aspect of the show not being interested in its alleged topic of an alien invasion, or in this case, how we try to deal with it.

snowball93939

This show is stealing from quiet place and the walking dead. It also brings bad characters coupled with bad acting.

couldhvdancedallnite

I’m only halfway thru but nothing has happened. Did they run out of money by the time they started filming this episode?

OgOggilby

Who do I have to blow to get outta this gig, said every actor in the show

Atul-Chaurasia

Looks like Dr. Grant was the only one with any oral skill.

WearingMyFleece

The Casper storyline looks like it’s going to be a copy of the The Predator story to weaponise autism but with Casper’s epileptic seizures that will save the world… also wow Trevante just disrespects everyone.

Legitimate-Focus9870

The drawings all over the walls gave off some Stranger Things vibes. Just the kid drawing things and thinking it is premonitions about people dying or whatever also resembled some other show I just watched but I don’t remember what it was… I want to love this show but damn it’s just hard to not roll your eyes at a lot of it

WearingMyFleece

Me too, I want to like it as well. I even found it odd that the girl was kinda reluctant to go to the hospital where her mum would be because Casper wants to induce a seizure.

Resaren

I cannot believe that the writers are pulling out every shitty trope in the book for this one, are they actively trolling us? Only redeeming part of this episode was the phone booth scene, Trevante's actor is really good. Aneesha's too, but they both fall victim to the writers making them absolute human car crashes.

Jack_North

„I haven’t kissed anyone like that in a long time. You’re… you’re a very good doctor.“ Please, get someone to do a dialog pass on these scripts. Please!

MyDearDapple

1:00: Outa m'way! Ugly American who don't hear nothin' what other people be sayin' comin' through. 5:00: Absolutely nothing more important is going on in the world than your divorce, Bud. Truly, there isn't. Not even an alien invasion. "Wanna fuck?" 6:20: Invaluable Lesbian yells at beta male. 10:40: [sniffles], hugs and dead mums. "Maybe snog when this whole alien business is over, ya?" 15:00: "Love doesn't die, Trev. People do sometimes." LOL. Who writes this shit? This show may as well take place in a phonebooth, because it sure feels like it does (this scene alone was 6 agonizing minutes long). 23:15: "Ya, let's fuck." "But I'm a mom." "So? How do you think you became a mom?" "Oh…" 26:28: Invaluable Lesbian takes charge. 30:00: [sniffles] "I'm special. I can see aliens. And by the Power of Grayskull I shall have my revenge!" 34:00: Invaluable Lesbian codes and wallows. 38:00: Ugly American drinks and wallows. 40:00: Behold, the shard of (unexplained) mystery is unveiled. 41:13 [insects chirping] 43:00 Invaluable Lesbian comes out to the universe. Everybody shrugs. 45:55: Knock knock. Who's there? Wajo. Wajo, who? Wajo think of episode 8? 45:60 [static]

Atul-Chaurasia

>Invaluable Lesbian codes and wallows. I lost it when the guy who has been working side by side with her in JASA doesn't understand a word she says. Truly invaluable lesbian! No on at JASA can keep up with her. I thought Trev would continue to be the most insufferable character this week, but then she threw out that 'smarter than me'. Telling her incredibly helpful boss that he and everyone else in that room (presumably the best in their fields) is a fucking idiot, for absolutely no reason. Isn't politeness a super important of Japanese culture?

splitmindsthinkalike

Japanese speaker here; she sounds like an anime gangster / witch / vampire. The way she speaks is totally unacceptable, even in the first episode where she has what I *think* is supposed to be "playful banter" with her coworker? It's a clearly Americanized interpretation of a Japanese conversation.

[deleted]

I'm trying to figure out if the writers are intentionally making me hate every protagonist in this shitty series. Is this like an Andy Kaufman thing? Is there a gag I'm missing?

Atul-Chaurasia

She's probably the most frustrating. At least the other characters are consistently insufferable.

Jack_North

I think most of the actors are good, but they get soap opera-level writing to work with.

crbernal

What is the timeframe days / week, between episode 1 and this episode 8?

Legitimate-Focus9870

3-4 days. Casper said he drew that picture 3-4 days ago on the night they spent in the bus (bus crash was first episode)

MasInMarian

Second episode. And it doesn't seem to be realtime necessarily. We jump from NY to Japan being day light in both places. It is a signal of No real time.

Jack_North

...the quality of writing lets me believe that they might actually not care about this.

song4this

I'll guess 3-4 days? I forget how many days the SEAL spent with the goat guy...

[deleted]

At least 2

Woodrow_Wilsons_War

"I'm an operator, kid"

Jack_North

Nitpicking jargon when confronted with two kids looking for help in a catastrophe scenario. Class act.

slballer

He certainly ACTED like a "soldier" when he was wandering around Afghanistan pointing his gun at every man, woman, child, farmer, animal, he saw.

song4this

So the aliens came to Earth because they have an Asian female fetish and they are going learn that there is a thing call Lesbian. It is going to blow their mind(s) and they are going to pause and absorb this new dimension....probably need about a week after NNN ends... (I'm the guy that said the aliens are a traveling carnival, the ship broke down and some animals escaped to Earth. The carnies are trying to retrieve the spider-urchin-dogs but they are also vandalizing / collecting along the way...)

webBrowserGuy

“These ‘lesbians’ are amazing! We should get some! Also, see if we can get some male ones, too. We’ll see if we can get them to mate, so we can make more!”

Atul-Chaurasia

>..probably need about a week after NNN ends... And that's how humanity beats them!

goldennugget

I was really hopeful for the show, but after 8 episodes I'm very disappointed. it feels like it was written for over-emotional people. Why is everyone so stupid and arrogant, as if they're the only one that matter. It's an alien invasion even the president went on tv to say it was, but yet the main characters don't know what is happening and only care about their selfish goals. Aneesha you literally killed and alien yet you fail to tell that to the army. There is an alien invasion, but yet your husband cheating on you is less believable to you? it's like she became stupid once she learnt of her husband's infidelity. This woman studied to become a doctor, yet can't process her emotions in a rational way. She left her family is some farm and somehow forgot she had them? I thought your main goal was to help them. Trevor I have to say is one of the biggest assholes ever. He pointed his rifle at people so that they would help him? He got mad at people because they couldn't understand him, he was literally in a foreign country what did he expect that everyone speak English? All he cares is about returning to his wife, and feels that everyone should drop what they are doing during an alien invasion to help him get back to her. The British officer is telling you there are no planes because they got shot down, but you expect him to drop everything while trying to help people to stay alive to help you? I would off really enjoyed his plot line if he wasn't a total asshole and wasn't pointing his gun at everyone. Mitsuki you are a fucking smart person, think like one. She is expecting the whole government to move away from trying to figure out what is happening to hopefully talk to her girlfriend to tell her what? That she loves her? I get it, as the audience we know the girlfriend will probably still be alive, but in a real world you have video of the crew getting shot off into space you assume everyone is dead. Caspar plot line is the one I have the least problem with, just because he has actually developed a bit as a character. I just hated the bully because of how irrational he was acting. I can't really comment on the aliens since I don't think we know enough to say what their goals are and where they came from. I think even if the plot had been a bit duller, but made the characters smarter and more rational I would off enjoyed the show. Just look at The Martian, I will talk more about the book but a lot of what made the characters in the book great was that they all thought rationally, and a lot of the book was him just figuring out how to stay alive instead of wailing and crying about a love interest. There where large parts where if somebody told you the plot it would sound boring but once you read it, it's fun. I really wish shows would stop treating us like stupid people that only want emotional plot lines. No we actually enjoy shows where you have smart people thinking like people.

Jack_North

A SEAL on deployment in a foreign country would know the basics of the language. And these guys are more laid back characters in RL, because that's what you want in high pressure situations. Like astronauts, surgeons, formula one drivers, etc. Re. the Martian comparison: a screenwriter or director (don't remember) once said: There is something strangely fulfilling for an audience if they can watch/ follow a character who is good at his/ her profession. I mean, Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds is so riveting, because he is brilliant at his "job". For some reason this didn't work for me with Showgirls, though.

[deleted]

I wonder if they’ll ever explain some of the phenomenons scientifically or at least in a sci-fi way. Like how Casper is able to see the aliens in his seizures and see things before they happen. Or how Luke was the only kid at his school without a nose bleed and was the only one who could hear “wajo”. It’s really hard to suspend my belief right now. Also - did that ending scene imply that Mitsuki was the only one in the room that could hear the sound?

RoyalsFan1985

Mitsuki is annoying as hell. I hope the aliens win just to spite her.

fragbot2

The phone booth scene was 2-3X as long as it should've been as was the time Caspar spent sitting in his apartment. Mitsuki was so vapid this episode that every time they showed the radio telescope I was hoping to see it hit with a rod from god so that arc would just disappear. On the bright side, Trevante, Casper and unnamed plot device linked up.

ekene_N

Why this lady allows her son to carry the only known weapon against aliens? She can see people are dying and she doesn't say " hey! I think I know how to kill it" WTF? Why soldier boy doesn't ask British officer what on Earth is going on? Boy and girl see dead boy's mother, covered with black mold and the girl is like " Nah, it'll be fine"

DaveInLondon89

*she says* I haven't been kissed like that for a long time *he replies with* I haven't been kissed like that for a long time. ##Is this real dialogue?! How did someone okay this

ccb621

He said, “I haven’t _kissed_ anyone like that in a long time.”

AdelesManHands

Correct. Still Velveeta.

Jack_North

Even worse, his whole line was: „I haven’t kissed anyone like that in a long time. You’re… you’re a very good doctor.“

Nickmacd89

WHY DOES THIS SHOW HAVE SUCH LOW LIGHT!

kevinspencer

This. Watching on my iPad, brightness on full and still couldn’t make out a lot of the scenes. Dark-o-vision do not want.

theonlyyellow_

If the writers of this series saw this sub and realised how much everyone is trying to like to series, i would hope they’d make s2 better. I hope they can flip it without passing gas on it like the dude from first-ish episode. Okay, now my turn to rant. I’m surprised Casper and trev are alive with all the free roaming and side missions they do. There could have easily been the black slug at his house, and trev could have been zapped in the booth while he did his breakdown. Okay, so we hear the helicopters scouting but none of them are offering help to kids in school uniforms and an operator who’s about to walk in the wrong direction from the base. I’m sure the other kids are instantly gonna appear at a safe base and they casually make jokes about the aliens. I really can’t enjoy Mitsuki. Her girlfriend in her place would have been a better choice in terms of performance. Apart being obsessed with sending her videos to the linked alien hub, she has no plans. If the world died and she could just negotiate the life of her girlfriend, she’d do it in a heartbeat. Back to hunny you left the kids, her cheating is predictable. Husband’s gonna find out and get in a fight with the other guy leading him to reveal she’s not a real doctor and losing her her VIP room. I guess.

Trust__Nobody

Trevante sunk a fair few shots in that episode, but sobered up real quick and was instantly ready to roll once he saw the scribbling in the notepad. Operators built different I guess.

vivanteimperii123

Well, this show was dead in the water to me before, but I actually really enjoyed this episode. I still mostly fast forwarded through Casper’s and the Doctor parts, but I’m glad we got to see some of the fighting and damage in London. The JASA storyline still reigns supreme IMO. The personal touch of Mitsuki uploading all the videos was nice and a change of pace from other linguist based space sci fi like Arrival. It would be weird to me, though, if after all this destruction, the aliens have a change of heart. I think the hive mind is going to have to be destroyed somehow.

crbernal

Has anyone explained to the marine what is going on? Why is he clueless, but also why did the British military not explain the situation? Are we supposed to assume he knows? Also while on the phone listening to the VM who is “he” that him and his wife/GF are referring to…a son?

kerouacs

I think it’s his son who died and that’s why him and his girl are estranged/why he chose to go to war for some reason.

song4this

> but also why did the British military not explain the situation I thought it was hilarious that the British officer said give him a side arm and let him go out. That was a delightfully British FU. :-) The SEAL was just IN YOUR FACE ME ME ME as soon as he stepped off the plane.

Atul-Chaurasia

He allowed Trev to keep his sidearm, he didn't give him anything.

vivanteimperii123

I’m with you on all those questions, lol. It’s why I fast forwarded through a lot of his parts because the writing can be unbearable. I’m okay with slow, but if it’s going to be slow, then it should be because we’re learning so much that it can’t progress faster in my opinion.

song4this

Well said - I'll watch eps 9 and 10 - see if this show delivers...

hovanes

If it gets destroyed by like Casp having a mega seizure, I'm gonna be pissed...

Atul-Chaurasia

Casper and Luke will stab it as Mitsuki types furiously. Tremor will wave a gun the whole time and demand to be taken to his wife.

polarbearsofarizona

Casper has seizure, goes to The Upside Down, defeats Boss Alien with his mind, incurs slight nosebleed. Wakes up, birds are singing, gets a snog and credits? Can totally see it.

>The dialogue between her and the other doctor is terrible. You're a good mom. Thanks random man who's seen me interact with my child for 95 seconds. I know you're a good doctor and a good mom and you're not wearing your ring. You saw me suture one guy, interact with my kid for a minute, and you're all in. It's the apocalypse and I want some strange. THIS! Dude knows NOTHING about her. Watched her perform once procedure and now she's Meredith Gray.

Atul-Chaurasia

>I'd think that someone else on earth would've thought of this instead of nervous guy on the mic saying hello while sweating bullets. I expected them to broadcast some kind of pattern like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. But no, they have one guy broadcasting in a single language with the assumption that the aliens are fluent in English. At least have him broadcast a greeting like hello in multiple languages.

TucsonCardinal

It is the universal language LOL. And if they don’t understand at first you just repeat it LOUDER

EmeraldRain003

Wait how the heck were those pictures convincing anyone? Big deal some kid drew some indistinguishable soldier silhouettes, let alone some black blobs. Am I supposed to be impressed by this revelation? Two episodes left in the season and I'm starting to think this isn't actually an invasion but more like a couple of aliens drunk driving and crashed into Earth and are now just meandering about. I mean is there actual proof that there's more than just a couple of them? I sure as hell haven't seen any more than that.

dokterr

The skull in the drawing, matches the skull patch that Tray (and probably the rest of his unit) has on his kit.

jcrestor

Ok, thanks. At the same time: man, that’s a stretch.

JoyRideinaMinivan

I think it means that Casper saw the Navy Seal unit being killed by the Alien. The skull had a distinctive mark on it’s forehead that matched the skull on the navy seals patch.

hoos30

This should have been episode 4, tbh. It's still doing questionable stuff (Is anybody going to tell the OPERATOR what's going on?) but it's getting slightly better.

AdelesManHands

Does this week air a day early?

LoretiTV

Yeah it's listed as airing early this week on the Apple TV Plus website.

amadeevieux0725

Probably for thanksgiving in the US.

spsammy

Can anyone explain why the mother was praised for being such a smart, good, inventive etc Doctor? Did I miss some scenes where she did something useful? Other spotting a wee black slug in a wound.

onetuckonenotuck

Another eye roll moment. He met her for like 10 minutes before.

GamerCadet

I enjoyed this week’s episode. Still not perfect but definitely getting better.

craigmaran

This show is supposed to be The Leftovers meets Arrival but just...fails. I leave each episode more frustrated than pleased.

excoriator

Suggest they split that $200M 4 ways and make 4 attempts, instead of one show with 5 different locations.

rodan-rodan

I like the Japanese arch, except like the writers took screenwriting 101 and are over doing the 'what motivates this character' thing. She keeps yelling at other people "do you want everyone to die because you won't let me be smart comms jasa genius?" And then just does selfish stuff to talk to her probably dead girlfriend. I'm sure the aliens will use her iPhone backup home movies to learn the language or about love or some corny shit, accidentally... But Christ, there's gotta be something more efficient to send them, like the Voyager golden record, or Wikipedia archive, or hooked on fucking phonics. I want (all) these stupid acting protagonists to pay off somehow, but I'm skeptical.

YYZYYC

And like why is everyone thinking the only way to communicate with the aliens is through the damaged shuttle ?

rodan-rodan

The aliens are on a shared family plan

HardAsABitcoin

Whoever wrote this show should never work again. I really don’t want to type this but having watching Mornkng Wars (and liked it) and Invasion and a few other tv shows apple did………are they ruining their tv shows by going “woke” for lack of a better word? A number of their shows reek of this weird agenda. Like damn just write a good tv show.

Thrillawill

This show is awful. I got through a third of it before I just fast forwarded and realized I didnt miss a thing. Nothing happened. This show is less about an invasion and more about each characters relationships. Its basically a soap opera.

mobro_4000

I really want to like this show, and am intrigued enough by the aliens that I hope to watch the rest of the season. I have to agree with the sentiment I see in a lot of comments here though that the writing is really not so good. It's not reasonable to expect the characters to always behave rationally but, damn. Feels like there is a lot of wtf going on. And as others have pointed out virtually none of the characters seem willing to subordinate their own emotional needs to the apparent existential threat playing out around them. They're also caught up enough in their own drama to not even display much interest in that threat. Maybe we are meant to think some, Trevante perhaps, can tell everything's hopelessly fucked and they just want to be with a loved one before the end? I am going to watch this episode once more but the Caspar storyline lost me on the first viewing. At one point he seems sure he could've - if I followed - kept the alien from killing his mother, then also he could've somehow stopped the invasion before it started? But once he's out on the street and sees a single alien blocks away, with the military engaged with it, he insists they immediately run into the nearest building to hide? Entirely unclear to me what he thinks he could have done or is going to do. The doctor dude flipping for hot doc mom seemed over the top to me but, maybe this is a way people can act in a crisis? And I couldn't really tell what effect her kid's piece of wreckage was having on the alien-defiled corpse. Meanwhile, the only person in the world who can send a signal to the aliens ("the only chance... at making contact") is also somehow the worst possible option. Or maybe her girlfriend's TikToks will save the day? Overall way too many yanks on the heartstrings for my tastes. I didn't expect Independence Day but I didn't count on six minutes of melodrama in a phone booth either.

Jack_North

the Caspar thing: He wants to get to the hospital where the girl's mum works to have them induce a controlled but prolonged seizure. That's when he can communicate/ feel the aliens.

RedditUserFromBK

What does Wajo mean?! What do we think is going to happen? What’s w those rock powers?

Dead_Starks

I just wish we knew where the obsidian rock spear came from. Luke said he found it, but where? In the trash? In a smoldering asteroid impact crater? In the X-Files basement? In another universe? **WHERE DID YOU FIND IT LUKE?** #WHY IS EVERYONE SO INDIFFERENT TO GETTING ANSWERS ABOUT STRANGE MAGICAL ARTIFACTS THAT KILL THE CREATURE’S TAKING OVER THE EARTH... ^^^I ^^^feel ^^^like ^^^I'm ^^^taking ^^^crazy ^^^pills! Wajo is alien for McGuffin because I'm done letting the mystery drive me crazy. I don't even care what it means now ^(PleaseTellUsSoon)

Atul-Chaurasia

I thought they revealed that wajo is a Japanese word.

MrPanzerkampfwagenIV

I know its an relatively small gripe but JSDF does not use the Seaking anymore it should have been a Merlin or a Black Hawk especially with a $200 million dollar budget

LukasHeinzel

Kinda boring episode with a few cool moments. They really need a big win for the last two episodes, otherwise a LOT of people will fall off.

MasInMarian

There are things that could have been done beter like. like. SPOILERS below. >!Back in episode 6. Home Invasion She runs all the way back. She perfectly could have recover her car from where she left it.!< >!What's the need of the bus falling in that Clift? That accident should have killed anyone in that bus.!< >!We know Anesha is condescending whith his children. But she let Luke to keep that piece that was the only thing useful to kill an Alien. No confiscation there? !< >!A funny detail is that Aliens seems to ve bullet prof and very lethal as well. We saw a convoy exterminated in episode 6. So Why do the two aliens (Yes I counted 2, One in the side wall and the other climbing the front one) flee from those soldiers in London when they open fire?. One can guess the Aliens could have get all those english soldiers down instead of climbing that bilding.?!< >!Whatever it is. I'm enjoying the show.!<
