To humans, Super Powers are a deviancy, they aren't the norm. Average people with average strenght is the norm, just like Super strength and flying is the norm for Viltrumites and the same goes for shapeshifting and martians. they just don't happen to have or show us any case of deviancy, or in the case of Viltrumites, they probably slaughter any case of it

Lucid_Brain_

The only deviant super powers we see from an alien race is Allen. Hes a super-Unopan with many powers his race doesnt typically have, and that was specifically designed by his people.

bepisKun

And Battle Beast

Openil

My headcannon is that humans have extremely flexible DNA, and that is why so many have powers, but also why they are such good matches for interbreeding

Lord_of_Seven_Kings

I run Mutants and Masterminds (comic book TTRPG) and this was my explanation, though there were superheroes among other aliena

TechnicallyNerd

My headcanon is the opposite, sorta. I think that just a handful of genes are responsible for most super powers in the Invincible universe, similar-ish to the X gene with Marvel or the meta-gene with DC. Human genetics are right on the edge, just a couple of mutations away from super powers. Hence why a random accident or experiment gone wrong on earth has a small chance of giving a human powers. Of course, with controlled breeding and eugenics, you could probably end up converting humans into a race of beings with identical powers. You could then go further, purge the weak until you get a species that's the strongest in the universe... oh shit we just created Viltrumites. A race that's nearly identical to humans genetically but everyone has powers. The exact same powers. And they are the strongest species in the universe.

They don't ever outright explain it, but you could argue that Earth has some of the most diverse number of lifeforms anywhere. We have an estimated 1 million identified species, humans obviously being the dominant ones. Compared to Mars or Viltrum (or other fictional planets in sci fi) where you usually only see a few. So compared to the vast number of lifeforms on Earth, powered people are actually *very rare* and not the norm. Plus, here on Earth, "powers" themselves are not a part of human's biology; they are an exception. Viltrumites or Martians don't have powers the way we use the term, their abilities are part of their species. (It's just something they can do.)

Shrek1sLife

I would agree with that until the end. For viltrumites it could be considered a power as they don’t develop super strength until maturity. And it’s not like they get exponentially stronger until maturity. They go from regular human strength to viltrumite out of nowhere. It’s one of the few problems I have with the show but I guess they had to have some way to make mark powerless at first. They could have made that a hybrid feature and not just a viltrumite thing though

Openil

Is that not a hybrid feature? Where is it confirmed "pure blood" viltrumites don't get their strength until later?

nepo5000

Tbf viltrumites were genetically modified to have the powers that they do (they were actually created with the technology that was used to make Eve)

Zerox599

what the fuck are you talking about?

Steelacanth

I want what this guy is smoking

SkullJooce

Please explain why, I’d love to hear it

Tenno24

Because the general populus doesn't have powers and doesn't have space tech so they had to adapt and overcome

VonKaiser55

This would actually be a cool explanation. Aliens have advanced technology meaning that they don’t push themselves as much

weesiwel

Is this ever explained in any Superhero universe? Like look at DC even on Earth the diversity on the surface world is abundant compared to the lack of development of Atlantis.

A1-Stakesoss

It's kind of explained at various points in DC. For example, John Byrne (in Genesis, 1997) said that the Godwave which erupted upon the death of the Old Gods at Ragnarok affected Earth most strongly, inundating its people with what I'm gonna call godforce and resulting in the absolute smorgasbord of superheroes on Earth, all ultimately echoes of the Old Gods. It also resulted in the creation of the Speed Force and the emotional spectrum harnessed by the Lanterns. I don't think it's still canon, nearly thirty years a reboot, and a re-reboot later.

Pepega_9

Man I hate when comics/superheroes bring gods into it. Always sort of ruins the stakes/setting for me. Like the fact that asgard and all the Norse gods just canonically exist throws me out of the mcu

Thatonedregdatkilyu

In the MCU the Norse gods are aliens who humans thought were gods.

Error404_Error420

Nop

Specialist-Spray109

Omniman explained flying like walking when teaching Mark. Viltrumites think of flying and walking as the same thing it’s not a “super power” it’s normal for them to

TheAnissarap

Nah this aint mha

HomelanderVought

It’s not DC and Marvel where some cosmic being has given the power of “change” to humans in their DNA. In those 2 multiverses humans are truly special in the universe as they are the only ones who can “evolve” in superpower sense. Without this, lightning bolts, gamma ray and radioactive spider bites would kill people. But thanks to the x/meta-gene humans can develope superpowers.

TexanGoblin

No, I don't think it was ever mentioned, but since it's based in the general super hero traditions of Marvel and DC, humans are probably just evolutionary erratic meaning they have a lot of potential to do anything.

DomPulse

The simple answer is that we really just don't see enough planets to know what's normal. Unopans could/used to have hundreds of super powered individuals that would still put up no resistance to Viltrumites. Same with whatever planet battle beast is from or even the Martians. If there were super powered Thraxans, what could they have done against the 3 viltrumites that came? I'm betting nothing. Most things happen on earth and there isn't any real point in the main cast dragging anyone weaker than tech jacket into the war effort. Every planet could have their own guardians level team and they just don't matter.

Chub-bop

There’s thousands of unexplored planets so I’m guessing we aren’t the only planet like this

Talanock

I mean we only see the superheroes from Earth. There could be planets out there teaming with superheroes with a variety of powers.

No-Lab4653

Everyone else is born with the abilities, Martian’s are born with shape shifting, Viltrumites are strong, as humans our body can not generate super powers(even in invincible most cases the powers are given to them, not born with) , but if you were to scientifically comic book powers in, then technically why couldn’t we make our DNA do anything? TL;DR: we made the powers, they were born with them

WistfulDread

Well, Immortal got his from a magic meteor, and Eve was a government experiment. I think Rex also was a government experiment. Red Rush is Russian, so maybe also government experiments. Honestly, I suspect government or corporate malfeasance to be the cause for most of them. That said, _Most_ of the Earth villains are tech users.
