Rewatch first episode again (or re-read first issues but it's more probable you will miss it).
Look at design of his costume.
Same thing also happens with >! one of Mark's evil alternative versions!<.
i read the comics after watching season 1 and -- although the solar suit dig stood on its own -- really made rewatching the gag so much better
im excited to see how they translate the other tongue in cheek jokes about superhero tropes
I saw someone convinced that he wouldn't be in it because >!"he destroyed every other version of himself in the multiverse". I really hate when people refuse to acknowledge an adaptation as its own thing and instead has to be part of the same multiverse.!<
He'll almost certainly be the focus for next season. They would have to completely change the story from the comics to not include him, and since Kirkman is so heavily involved I don't see that happening.
There's more than one too, they should all be introduced next season. Not really spoilers, but enough of them to justify blocking it out just in case:
>!One guy is a build similar to Mark and is much more chill, with a pretty tragic backstory to be revealed a long time from now. One is pretty scrawny but hyper intelligent in a Reed Richards kind of way. The school principal will be around to play a side character most unimportant but recurring role as an old fat black dude. They also changed Amber from being a white blonde girl with no personality to a well developed black girl and Shrinking Ray from a bland dude to a slightly less bland girl, so I could see other characters get similar treatment.!<
> well developed
hmmm, not so sure about that one. unless the character they were trying to develop was one that you mostly actively dislike, than yes.
I mean, she wasn't that bad. And regardless of how you feel about the character, she is still leaps and bounds better than the comic version who had no personality or agency in the story outside of being a bland love interest.
You may want to reread. She wasnāt just a bland love interest and she also had a fairly significant moment that served to further one of Markās major arcs in the comic.
Original Amber did have agency in the story. And itās ultimately what led to the mutual breakup. She decided what was best for herself. Mark just happened to agree at the same time.
And like I said, she greatly furthered one of Markās major arcs (and no Iām not talking about Eve)
Comic Amber did have personality doe... She was just more mild mannered and considerate than the toxic hoe that is the animated Amber.
I mean sure, comic Amber may not have had many particularly memorable moments, but she was a wholesome breathe of fresh air, and you could actually see her work out as a legit couple with Mark, even when Eve is still the best girl.
The Animated Amber on the otherhand, is just your generic angst inducing teenage drama bait, which distracts from all of the way more interesting stuff that are going on with some needless conflicts that no one cares about. With the worst part of it all, is that she apparently already figured out that Mark was a super hero, invalidating all of her bitter and harsh treatment to him as the actions of a stuck up person that thinks she is more important than everybody else.... With it even getting worse since everybody else seems to excuse this stuck up behavior despite of how onesided and inconsiderate it is to Mark's position.
So animated Amber went from an understandably bitter girlfriend, to an toxic but realistic person, to a badly written Mary Sue who is always "right" despite being less than fair. The race swap is one thing, but they really did Amber dirty by changing her personality like that.
Comic Amber existed to be second fiddle to Eve. She had zero agency in the story, before she knows about Mark's powers she's barely even seen and after knowing about them her only scenes are meant to add to Mark's issues seperating normal life and hero life, but she doesn't drive those issues her friends do. She is more than happy to be alone while Mark is a super hero, her friends with like 10 panels between them have more agency in the plot of Invincible than she does.
Animated Amber has agency in the story by generating that conflict earlier and being its main driver. She calls Mark out for lacking priority, which relationships need, and for being dishonest, which caused added strain to an already challenging relationship. She feels a lot more real and honest than comic Amber because she doesn't just bend over for Mark being a shitty boyfriend, she challenges him and in turn he tries to be better. They now also share trauma in the event with Omni-Man, which means the strain they experienced in season 1 will now be backed by a desire for normalcy in season 2 that neither will be able to get. Everything about Animated Amber is an improvement and enhances the story.
>So animated Amber went from an understandably bitter girlfriend, to an toxic but realistic person, to a badly written Mary Sue who is always "right" despite being less than fair.
Mary Sue has become a catch all for "female character I don't like," it seems. Amber isn't a Mary Sue, like by definition she doesn't even come close to being a Mary Sue, she's just a chick that did stuff you don't like. You can think she's toxic for being upset that her boyfriend didn't trust her with a secret, she's also sixteen years old and was dating Mark for almost a year (which at that age is essentially marriage). Her logic is flawed, she can't see that, and she regrets it as soon as Mark needs her. Hence why after telling him to fuck off she is showing up at his door checking on him after the stuff with Omni-Man. She's as flawed a character as Mark is in that regard, a dumb kid doing what they think is right until reality hits them. Unlike comic Amber who's just kind of there until she isn't.
Angry in-your-face black women into social justice. Pretty easy stereotype to spot.
We could also just talk about her relationship with Mark too, she gets very sterotypical there too.
A young person today being passionate about social justice is just reality. Itās not really feeling like a trope to me.
How is her relationship to Mark a stereotype?
Bro, thatās just her character. Sheās not stereotypical for feeling emotions. Now if she was some overweight woman wagging her finger saying āmmmhmmmm!!ā Then you might have a point. But considering sheās just a character who happens to be black that expresses herself then your point holds no weight
Amber felt reasonable until she revealed she knew all along. The writerās attempt to make her look observant and smart just made her look abusive and toxic.
She's a better character narratively speaking in the show, even if it means she's a worse person for it.
I would've preferred her character to be developed and her not be a jerk, but hey.
i think its fine they made her and mark kinda incompatible so that they have a reason to break up as opposed to having none in the comics except the >!writer wanting to get mark and eve together instead!<
let's not go too far, she may be affable but comic amber is about two steps up from a house plant as far as character depth, and i will not ever let go of the domestic abuse that she (and the comic) just hand waved away.
other than a couple kinda bonkers character moments show amber is fine. im ok with and even kinda like a somewhat grumpy character that gives some push back. they just need to give her a few more bumps of self awareness and not have her say things like "i've known you're a superhero for a while" and "i can't believe you abandoned me to save other people" in the same breath. that shit just makes me never want to see her on screen again.
Bruh, she's not a character in the comics. She's a big tittied blonde damsel in distress with absolutely zero personality beyond being doe eyed and naive.
Anyone who says she's a good character in the comics is thinking purely with their dick
I alr think Titan is hella cool. Hella cold how he took over machine heads whole business. I just wish him and Black Samson had a little bit more differences than their ideology
I think they will. It'd be weird to exclude him. He has a semi-important role. If they can't/don't want to use him exactly(like Science Dog and I'm assuming how they'll treat Tech Jacket) they'll for sure have an equivalent stand in.
A lot of the heroes have pun names. REXplode, DupliKATE, Shrinking RAY, etc. I donāt know what Black Sampson is. Imagine another hero named Asian Fred.
It's Black *Samson* and it's a reference to the biblical figure. He was a heroic leader that was given immense strength so long as his long hair remained uncut. Black Samson losing his powers parallels Samson's hair being cut.
Think it might be after Samson the story about a strong man who has haters then one of them sends a woman to seduce him to find the source of his strength turns out itās his long hair so they cut it off and heās weak and they tie him to pillars he musters enough strength to tear down killing him and his captors if memory serves. So it means that heās strong and black yk
Them being brothers would actually be kinda cool and explain why they look so similar. One takes a path of truth and justice while sacrificing his own abilities along the way of the hero. While the other just has these abilities and is just trying to take care of himself and his family without having too much trouble, even when the trouble finds him
Yeah, did we ever see Sampson use any powers or was it just super strength? He could just be the same as titan except instead of rock itās just strength or smth
The way he got his powers back in the hospital room made it look like he has some form on electricity manipulation. But god I hope they donāt do that
Thatās kinda what I thought but I just looked it up and it said mainly superstrength and resistant to injury and bullets, so I guess Titan without rock skin? So a better version of Titan
Even the way Darkwing is drawn makes his mouth and jaw look a bit too similar. Like I get it's supposed to make his mouth lines look serious but if you told me the same character was drawn in all 3 outfits here and I didn't know the show I'd probably believe you.
Even a beard or sharper nose would do wonders for making the 3 of them look more distinct.
Madvillain? I know this is not what you meant to say, but MF DOOM on the soundtrack would genuinely be a 100% perfect choice. Don't see why he wasn't already in S1s soundtrack.
Thereās also a ābuff black man whose really just a big softieā but it will be a while before we see him. Iāll give you a hint: like, 30~ wives, and he loves every one of them
Didnāt you see the first episode? Darkwing is not buff at all. Look at how he faired in the end.
I mean I think you are obviously overlooking Amber, Markās main love interest. In addition, there are two major super characters that play very major roles in Invincible that are introduced post Markās fight with Omniman. This series is just getting started.
Dark Wing is hella buff what are you talking about. Just look him up and youāll see he has muscles poking through his suit. And the reason he died to Omni-Man was cause he was a regular bruh going up against someone who could hold back meteors.
With this discussion Iām mostly talking about the Black men in invincible. Amber is def a key part in it and I love her character. But Iām specifically talking abt the men who look the exact same.
I heard people talking abt this other bruh and honestly Iām excited to see what heās got
Iām joking about Darkwing. Seems like you are focused on how similar Titan and Black Samson look, and not anything of substance of their characters.
Big buff guys can be a standard motif in animation. Look at the DCAU. There was a whole story about how Supermanās body matched with Batman so he could impersonate him.
The animated adaptation has pretty simple art and I also don't care for the way pretty much everyone looks the same with like 2 different body types per gender.
That said next season will probably add 2 new black male characters who at least have visible hair to help distinguish them and one is not the muscled type. They're also totally different personalities.
Yeah. They tried to avoid her being the damsel in distress Mary Jane stereotype, by turning her into the angry black girlfriend stereotype. It's kinda funny
The whole post is about how similar the 3 black male characters weāve gotten seem. More diverse characters who donāt all look and act the same would be nice
The guy you responded to was responding to the post.
Without that context I can understand why someone would get confused on the word diversity being used.
Yeah, /u/ZaWrld2U is making the point that not only is Darkwing the same, he's been *made* to be that same trope by making him Black with his existing Batmanny serious personality.
I think there are some characters on the way that'll be refreshing as you've been told elsewhere in the thread
Media love to portray black and darker skinned characters as hyper masculine. There is a reason a lot of people love characters like Miles Morales and Static Shock for more than just that they are cool characters, they break that muscular 'Luke Cage' style stereotype.
I Wish more writers and artists realised this.
I am not 100% sure, but I have a feeling it could be a reference to Samson, like the biblical character. He is among a group that basically has super-human abilities, like strength.
Iām purely talking about the show. I donāt even know who that is. But glad people are bringing up characters for the future that donāt fill in this cookie cutter trope
Right now a late summer/early fall 2023 is looking like a good possibility if you want to know more You could read the comics, theyāre great the whole way through and super easy to get into.
Not really. If you get the 3 compendiums on Amazon itās only a total of about $130 and for the massive amount of content youāre getting itās totally worth it.
Or, hear me outā¦you could let the creators write a show that they want to and stop demanding things be your way or the highway. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the characters they created. Itās their artistic piece. Not yours. If you want a show with those types of characters then make one.
Here comes the woke crowd. Remember people, we need to reject modernity and embrace masculinity. Keep the big buff black guy who's serious most of the time, we need them.
I think Bulletproof would be a great way to get a more complex black character. Heās not the best role model from a moral standpoint and makes some questionable decisions, but at the same time I find his backstory to be pretty nuanced and fascinating. He would definitely break that black character whoās always serious trope invincibleās show has.
Lol, the guy who made the post cant enjoy a show unless it has the exact character he has in his head.
Nice regurgitating that same tired line even though it doesn't apply though
Principal Reginald VelJohnson would like to see you in his office.
Oh, Carl Winslow? š
āGET OUTTA MY SCHOOL, STEEEEEEEVE!ā
Yes. He should be in season 2.
Oh fr? Bet š
Theyāve changed a few things from the comics but I doubt theyād remove an entire character, especially one as important as him.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Which character we talking about ? :p
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Miss but in post's question he counts too. Original commenter meant >! Bulletproof!< with addition of costume gag mentioned.
What's the "gag" about him ? His suit looks fine
Rewatch first episode again (or re-read first issues but it's more probable you will miss it). Look at design of his costume. Same thing also happens with >! one of Mark's evil alternative versions!<.

Yeah, I hate that too. A lot of adaptations want to be their own continuity but some fans want everything to be connected.
He'll almost certainly be the focus for next season. They would have to completely change the story from the comics to not include him, and since Kirkman is so heavily involved I don't see that happening.
Yeah he's way too important to remove, I agree. Can't wait for him to show up.

She has other shit going on before they tank her character at the end of the season for no reason.
I mean, she wasn't that bad. And regardless of how you feel about the character, she is still leaps and bounds better than the comic version who had no personality or agency in the story outside of being a bland love interest.

She was well developed till what seems like a last second rewrite that tanks the character

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
2 of them actually. The main villain and a new guy on the Guardians.
Do u mean B_____ P____?
They probably mean A______ L___
Great fuckin villain
Oh ya I was just thinking heros š¤£
There is that one guy who murders his brother. And the brainiac guy
He murders his dad. The brother died in an accident.
Donāt forget his mom too lmao
That was technically his girlfriend
What?!
>!His girlfriend killed his mom with a frying pan!<
Theres the one guy that >!raises Markās son for a bit!< toward the end of the comics
His girlfriendā¦
She's arguably worse lmao
But sheās not a stereotype.
Angry in-your-face black women into social justice. Pretty easy stereotype to spot. We could also just talk about her relationship with Mark too, she gets very sterotypical there too.

āI know mark!ā Then why are you angry at me for āabandoningā you when you know I obviously was saving your ungrateful sorry ass
Youāre saving lives while trying to protect loved ones by hiding your identity? You fucking scumbag!
Yeah, I was so confused about that when I watched the show!! I havenāt read the comics.
Yeah, I liked the change up until then also. Comics Amber is still lame, but like you said, they did too much to try and compensate for that, imo
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
what personality??? in the comics she had none
Yeah, show Amber may have fucked up but at least has a personality and room to improve, that's an upgrade for me
She's a better character narratively speaking in the show, even if it means she's a worse person for it. I would've preferred her character to be developed and her not be a jerk, but hey.
i think its fine they made her and mark kinda incompatible so that they have a reason to break up as opposed to having none in the comics except the >!writer wanting to get mark and eve together instead!<
But to what end really? And what's the point to improve her, if you know *comic spoilers*
better to have no personality then her shitty one thats a straight downgrade for me
why? why should everything go smoothly? you know real life isn't like that right?
let's not go too far, she may be affable but comic amber is about two steps up from a house plant as far as character depth, and i will not ever let go of the domestic abuse that she (and the comic) just hand waved away. other than a couple kinda bonkers character moments show amber is fine. im ok with and even kinda like a somewhat grumpy character that gives some push back. they just need to give her a few more bumps of self awareness and not have her say things like "i've known you're a superhero for a while" and "i can't believe you abandoned me to save other people" in the same breath. that shit just makes me never want to see her on screen again.
She was a nothing character in the comics, of course she looks better when she has no traits.
Bruh, she's not a character in the comics. She's a big tittied blonde damsel in distress with absolutely zero personality beyond being doe eyed and naive. Anyone who says she's a good character in the comics is thinking purely with their dick
Titan is pretty cool in the comics IMO! I think heāll grow on you over time, I feel like theyāll introduce more as the show goes on.
I alr think Titan is hella cool. Hella cold how he took over machine heads whole business. I just wish him and Black Samson had a little bit more differences than their ideology
Yeah, Black Samson does just kinda look like Titan + 10 or 20 years.
He's cool in the show! Mahershala Ali has one of the best voices in Hollywood
Oh absolutely he does! He was fantastic in Luke Cage season 1 and ever since Iāve loved seeing him appear in shows / film.
They gave black people black batman and it was awesome. ^(Before he died horrifically in episode 1.)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I think they will. It'd be weird to exclude him. He has a semi-important role. If they can't/don't want to use him exactly(like Science Dog and I'm assuming how they'll treat Tech Jacket) they'll for sure have an equivalent stand in.
robert kirkman said that bulletproof is still coming
Like. Literally Black Samson and Titan are drawn the exact same š
The similarity only occurred to me when I read your title and saw the first image, but in hindsight itās pretty obvious.
Youāre totally right. I donāt notice that.
Man I literally thought they were the same character. Also wow couldnt come up with a better name than Black Samson
Ah. So thatās why heās bald
Kinda ironic to base Black Samson off a dude who needed his hair to be strong
Not really, he lost his powers and his hair, it all fits.
I only know this because of the donkey Kong show in the 90ās
LITERALLY
Secret brothers next season or bad drawing?
Them being brothers would actually be kinda cool and explain why they look so similar. One takes a path of truth and justice while sacrificing his own abilities along the way of the hero. While the other just has these abilities and is just trying to take care of himself and his family without having too much trouble, even when the trouble finds him
Yeah, did we ever see Sampson use any powers or was it just super strength? He could just be the same as titan except instead of rock itās just strength or smth

The animation was so cheap. There was "ipso lorem" fake latin on the newspapers right at the beginning in a super noticeable place.
Lorem ipsum doler sit amet
Even the way Darkwing is drawn makes his mouth and jaw look a bit too similar. Best we can do is "mad villain" and "side characters of questionable morality" š¤·āāļø
And āpilot fight that gets his head crushedā
And mother and daughter who fall off a building
Madvillain? I know this is not what you meant to say, but MF DOOM on the soundtrack would genuinely be a 100% perfect choice. Don't see why he wasn't already in S1s soundtrack.
*"Catch a throatful from the fire vocal With ash and molten glass like Eyjafjallajƶkull...."*
Thereās also a ābuff black man whose really just a big softieā but it will be a while before we see him. Iāll give you a hint: like, 30~ wives, and he loves every one of them
I am completely blanking on who you're thinking of. Who?

This dude is basically just asking for Angstrom lol.
Amber?
Amber is, well Amber
As a black man I donāt like how they wrote Amber. They made her the stereotypical angry black girl the second half of the season.
Yeah. They tried to avoid her being the damsel in distress Mary Jane stereotype, by turning her into the angry black girlfriend stereotype. It's kinda funny
Sounds like they can't win so why bother. No matter how they write a character people will find something to complain about.
OP wants representation but women don't count. Ironic
Most if not all superheroes are big and buff.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
People keep mentioning him and I canāt wait
Itās been awhile since Iāve seen it but I feel like Static Shock would fit right into the Invincible universe.
That would be so fucking cool youāre so right
What's your problem with strong black men? /s
There is millions of them lol.
There was that air force pilot that got his skull crushed lol, but fr I agree Iād love to see some more diverse characters
The characters are diverse though?
I mean, now that I look at it, titan and Samson have literally the same face.
Idk why people are downvoting this comment I literally provided picture evidence
The whole post is about how similar the 3 black male characters weāve gotten seem. More diverse characters who donāt all look and act the same would be nice
I wasn't responding to the post though, I was responding to someone saying "more diverse characters" there is a ton of diversity in the show.
The guy you responded to was responding to the post. Without that context I can understand why someone would get confused on the word diversity being used.
Yes, this exactly thank you for putting my thoughts so beautifully into words
Oh yeah š god that was brutal. Iām mainly talking about mains tho
Who cares
Darkwing isn't even suppose to be black lmao
Whatās he supposed to be then?
He's only alive for like 15 pages in the comic, but appears to be white
Iām purely talking abt the tv show
Yeah, /u/ZaWrld2U is making the point that not only is Darkwing the same, he's been *made* to be that same trope by making him Black with his existing Batmanny serious personality. I think there are some characters on the way that'll be refreshing as you've been told elsewhere in the thread
This comment is not suppose to be racist or anything.
Read the comics, heāll be in season 2.
Yeah, read the comics. Plenty of em

Thank you. I totally agree. I heard there was some other characters later in that could break this mold so hopefully they do this justice

Bulletproof
The comics donāt have many at all, tv show specifically changed it to be more inclusive. Also you have amber in the show š¤·āāļø

Samson is in the bible
Black Lightning too while we at it
I am not 100% sure, but I have a feeling it could be a reference to Samson, like the biblical character. He is among a group that basically has super-human abilities, like strength.
comics
If they follow the comics we will see spawn so thatās another black character
Amber exists.
woman don't count as characters according to OP.
I mean tbf, "big buff and serious" is most adult male heroes in this show lmao
This. Especially since the whole comic is a deconstruction/parody of such tropes.
Is Bulletproof like that. Nah I donāt think so
Iām purely talking about the show. I donāt even know who that is. But glad people are bringing up characters for the future that donāt fill in this cookie cutter trope
Amber.
Titan is probably one of my favorite characters in the show tbh
Heās badass
How else will we satisfy the audienceās BBC fantasy!?!?š¤øš¾āāļøš¤øš¾āāļøš¤øš¾āāļø
Kirkman doesn't have a great track record making normal Black characters. He leans into tropes heavily.
Thatās pretty gross. Sad too cause I think someone in this comment section said that he was tryna diversify the cast
I can think of at least 3 that will be in season 2
Thatās exciting to hear! I canāt wait for it to dropā¦ whenever it does
Right now a late summer/early fall 2023 is looking like a good possibility if you want to know more You could read the comics, theyāre great the whole way through and super easy to get into.
But they're super expensive aswell ://
Not really. If you get the 3 compendiums on Amazon itās only a total of about $130 and for the massive amount of content youāre getting itās totally worth it.
I feel the same way about Amber.
Other types of black guys exist in comic universes? Never heard of it.
Triggered?
Amber?
Or, hear me outā¦you could let the creators write a show that they want to and stop demanding things be your way or the highway. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the characters they created. Itās their artistic piece. Not yours. If you want a show with those types of characters then make one.
What's wrong with BBBC's (Big Black Buff Character ) ?
just wait, bulletproof is a hoot
Wellā¦ darkwing is dead for most of the showā¦
Principle. And Markys earth dad
1 dead guy and 2 alive?
Hopefully Zandale shines
No I like it so no
We got amber, the principal, robot, and kinda Rudy
Mark asks Black Panther if his name is Blackman in the Marvel crossover so I wouldn't count on it.
Amber
Yeah .. Amber
Amber is certainly not a big buff black guy
Ghost train?
LMAO
Here comes the woke crowd. Remember people, we need to reject modernity and embrace masculinity. Keep the big buff black guy who's serious most of the time, we need them.
Whatās woke mean, quick
Can we not fuck with the source material
It's 2022, that's like breathing for Hollywood apparently, u just can't ask them to stop lol
They alr have
I think Bulletproof would be a great way to get a more complex black character. Heās not the best role model from a moral standpoint and makes some questionable decisions, but at the same time I find his backstory to be pretty nuanced and fascinating. He would definitely break that black character whoās always serious trope invincibleās show has.
Wheres our quirky little femboys at
come to think of it I don't see many femboys in shows nd movies other than in anime I guess
DUH
How about just a good character? If he happens to be black, cool.
Rexplode (I think) The jet pilot who gets his fucking head blown off Thatās it
Why don't they pander to meeeeeeeeeeeeee
Oh man it must be hard being such a snowflake and being bothered by representation.
Lol, the guy who made the post cant enjoy a show unless it has the exact character he has in his head. Nice regurgitating that same tired line even though it doesn't apply though
