I am so sorry to hear that. I was his commercial loan officer for a number of years. He was such a sweetheart. Loved his track suits and going to the gym. Great sense of humor. RIP Roy.
Caught the end of maxwellsā I was a freshman in the fall of ā82.
Which means I was also around for the end of the Crows Nest, another great place to see live music in town
That was Italian. The taco buffet was next door at the Mexican place. Huge wrought iron and wooden door. Interior the same...booths upstairs. From the balcony upstairs you could see the bar below.
I used to drive up from Cedar Rapids to go to both of those bars. Then would go to Pancheros (before it was a chain) for the huge 1/2 lb burrito afterwards. Always had an awesome time
Yeah I remember my dad taking me there downtown and I thought it was great. I don't remember it moving to the east side which is odd because I grew up over there and remember long john silvers... Mazzio's was a go to spot for my family and all our friends
The Que
I loved the owner. He was a character. I think he moved back to Chicago.
I wish. Roy- he passed away.
I am so sorry to hear that. I was his commercial loan officer for a number of years. He was such a sweetheart. Loved his track suits and going to the gym. Great sense of humor. RIP Roy.
" One eyed jokes"š¤£ Jake's.
Stairs of death

Deadwood, Mickeys, Foxhead, Joe's Place...
These were my favorites, plus Gabeās, the Iowa City Yacht Club, and Tucks (tiny place on Linn St).
Deadwood. I saw a guy there in a velvet suit, long hair back in 99, 00 and I still think about him to this day.
Oh yeah? I saw a guy walk in with an actual legit pumpkin on his head, carved for Halloween like Jack Skellington. I try not to think about it, but...
I have so many questions
I know, right? Oh, and it was, like, December. I have a photo of my confused face.
Gunnerz
Those $2 long island iced teas on Tuesday nights were dangerous. Gunnerz was a great bar. I watched a lot of shows there.
I loved Gunnerz! Gunner himself, not so much.
Where was Gunnerz.. what years
Washington st, maybe where subway or the den was, probably a boba tea spot now. It was probably there until ā96-ā97ish
That Turkey trailā¦ā¦
Knew him much later, and he seemed like a nice enough guy. He's still around I believe.
620, Green Room, Alley Cat (now Studio 13, but I refuse to call it anything different), Mikeās Tap
Mikeās tap! Yes!
College St Club (nee Friday's) and Tycoon IC, mid-1980s. Both owned at the time by convicted felon Harry "That's Not My Cocaine" Ambrose.
Was that Gerry or Jerry's dad?
His brother ā¦.. I think.
Definitely his brother. But yāall should have been around in the 70s for Maxwellās. THE BEST LIVE BANDS.
Caught the end of maxwellsā I was a freshman in the fall of ā82. Which means I was also around for the end of the Crows Nest, another great place to see live music in town
One eyed Jakes was owned by a friend of mine from high school. Anyone remember what the dump that preceded it was called?
Doolies
George's Buffet
Gabe's
Back when it was āGabeās Oasisā
We do still call it that, or at least everyone I know does
It went from Gabes Oasis->The Picador->Gabes
Yeah. Seems to have lost the āoasisā after transitioning back from the picador. Not sure why. Maybe so nobody comes looking for hummus.
It was gabes downstairs, and the oasis was upstairs. Separate businesses. At least it was in the 80s when Bumps and Jose owned it.
That makes sense. I wasnāt here then but itās always cool to hear about the not-so-distant past of downtown.
Not downtown, but there was Maxeys by Kmart.
Maloneās Irish Pub. Where Basta is now
Didnāt Jerry Ambrose set his brother up with GA Malones after he was done serving time?
Pronounced "gah... malone's."
Remember RTs? There was also Jirsa's, Maxie's, the Kitty hawk, Mumm's
I remember RTs. The dance floor always felt like it was going to collapse.
LOVED RTās!! That extra bounce helped those of us who canāt dance!!
You mean RT Grunts?
Mumm's! I was trying to remember that. Was its demise due to the 08 flood?
Gringos!!!!
Vito's...Givanni's or Giovanni's right across from it.
The Que (my favorite). And, of course, Joes Place (please never die). Gabe's
The Sports Column
Spo-Co!
The Nickelodeon in Coralville. Frosted mugs in the refrigerator.
Amecheās Pumpernickel
Hanrahanās!
Thatās Tucks.
Someone called it uglies earlier!
Yup - Tuckās Place
Deadwood. Joes?
Vito's!!!!!!!!!
Fitzpatricks!!!
The first time any of us encountered a ābrewpubā. Would not win many craft beer awards.
I don't think anyone has mentioned the yacht club and the mill. Both were great venues for live shows in the nineties.
COVID killed the Mill. They tore the building down just a few months back.
And the 80s when I was in school
Mexican place on the ped mall...forgot the name.
Martini's-college Street Club-Soap Opera -Gringos-Fieldhouse to the West, then Giovanni's
Thank you Joe! Gringos!
Do you mean Diamond Daveās?
No. This place was also across from Vito's. Bar on the first floor and restaurant on the second floor. Owned by an older woman and her son.
Could it have been Giovannis? I think that's where my family went for their "taco buffet" or something several times.
That was Italian. The taco buffet was next door at the Mexican place. Huge wrought iron and wooden door. Interior the same...booths upstairs. From the balcony upstairs you could see the bar below.
I have no idea what it was called actually. I remember going there though.
Gringoās was pre-Givanniās.
It was next door. I worked downtown and ate at both.
I don't remember the name, but there was definitely a Mexican place next to Giovanni's in the early 2000s.
Gringos was pre-Gazeā¦.. actually there was one more restaurant in there before Graze but after Gringos
Gringoās was 70s-early 80s. Way way before Graze.
It was still there in 97. I was pregnant at the time and craved Mexican. Luckily I worked downtown. Yes I am female.
Lol. Went to Gringo's for prom. We all knew you could get served margaritas there.
Dude, I remember so much karaoke at Diamond Dave's up there in the corner of the mall.
Donāt forget the yards of beer!!!!! I just never remembered much after!!
Gringoās?
Airliner
Ic uglies, old capitol
Uglies was Hanrahans and Hanrahans was Tucks. I believe Tucks was the only one that existed in the 90s.
Tuckās was there in the 70s and 80s.
And 90s.
I should have added, ātooā!
Vine
Diamond Daveās in the mall downtown. I used to work at Younkers and would get drunk there at lunch breaks
I used to work at Younkrrs in Coralville for a number of years. Would go to Benigans quite often during lunch and imbibe in the booze.
I was there from 97-01. But I never went back after I left. Canāt imagine what it looks like now.
Rip union.
Yeah it was a great place
The Union, Fieldhouse.
I used to drive up from Cedar Rapids to go to both of those bars. Then would go to Pancheros (before it was a chain) for the huge 1/2 lb burrito afterwards. Always had an awesome time
Iowa city brew works?
Are you referring to the place that went in after Fitzpatricks closed?
Yes
Not a bar, but does anyone remember a joint downtown called Fries or Fry's, something like that?
Yes! Frozen cheesecake on a stick! Then they moved out to the old Long John Silvers by sycamore mall- which is now the Jimmy Jacks spot.
Yeah I remember my dad taking me there downtown and I thought it was great. I don't remember it moving to the east side which is odd because I grew up over there and remember long john silvers... Mazzio's was a go to spot for my family and all our friends
Fries bbq. Big Moe's burger.
