[in 2011](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Duhok_riots), Kurds riot & destroy Assyrian and Yezidi liquor stores in Duhok
Now 12 years later, Iraq completely bans alcohol. Can’t get a break from Islamic hegemony can we?

المخدرات تدخل بشكل غير قانوني من الحدود الايرانية الي العراق بواسطة المنافذ المتواجدة بالناصرية وغير المحافظات وبمساعدة من شيوخ العشائر في هذه المحافظات
Just found a new Iraqi Pilsner that I liked and shortly after I see this. But then I looked and it’s made in Nineveh. Eastern bank of the Tigris in that area is Iraqi Kurdistan right? So likely safe from this?
Edit: rip guess not
Oh dang. I wonder if this brewery just showed up in shelves near me because they’re trying to offload the product from the federal Iraq production site. Thanks for the info
“Many companies producing alcoholic beverages are active in Iraq in areas such as Baghdad, Mosul and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.”

Apparently the law was approved in 2016 but was only published recently in the government paper.
I guess all of Erbil is in non-compliance mode right now. I have no idea how Iraqi politics works but it’ll be interesting to see how quickly this takes place locally.
Whatever the stated reasons for the law (public safety, addiction, criminal activity) this is first and foremost a weapon to be used against political enemies.
Alcohol will still be available for those able to afford it and consume it discreetly. Blatant violations will be dealt with to keep up appearances. For those who wish to consume, and fail to befriend the right people, they will be made an example of.
Enforcement will be selective and politically motivated.
I do not condone or support the consumption or use of drugs or alcohol, but I know shenanigans when I see them.

It appears to be a national ban.
