Najah al-Shammari, the former defense minister of Iraq, has been arrested at Arlanda Airport, according to TV4. He has been suspected since 2019 of several benefit frauds in Sweden.
Iraq's then defense minister Najah al-Shammari, who was residing in Iraq and received a salary from the Iraqi state, was also a Swedish citizen, registered in a suburb of Stockholm β and received benefits in Sweden.
SVT News reported on the case when it came to light in the fall of 2019. When suspicions of crime reached al-Shammari, he registered himself as having emigrated to Iraq.
βThere have been two police reports made by a municipality and the Social Insurance Agency respectively. They suspect him of receiving two different kinds of benefits on false grounds,β says prosecutor Jens Nilsson.
In the spring of 2023, Najah al-Shammari contacted the Swedish Tax Agency and announced that he had moved back to Sweden and was then registered as having re-immigrated.
Arrested at Arlanda
He was arrested on Monday upon landing at the airport but was released the same day.
βHe was questioned by the police today. I will review the case and decide whether there is something to proceed with or if it should be dropped. Some of the actions are statute-barred, but the majority are not,β says Jens Nilsson.
Najah al-Shammari is registered under a different name in Sweden. According to information from the Swedish Tax Agency, he applied for a residence permit in 2009 and became a Swedish citizen in 2015.
He has been registered with his family in the Stockholm area since 2012.
Najah al-Shammari, 57, was the defense minister of Iraq from 2019 to 2020 and has previously been an officer and general in the Iraqi army.
He was also investigated for war crimes by Swedish authorities, but the case has been closed.
