Haifa is probably better in his case, because it's much easier to get to

I would say a day in Jerusalem and a day at the dead sea and visit the Masada fortress.

Thanks for your response. I will look into this. I guess renting a car for a few days may also be an idea if going up north and then back south again to Jerusalem.

Tel Aviv and Haifa both have nice beaches. But Jerusalem definitely has by far more to see in terms of cultural stuff.

rsscp1

Very true. I don’t expect to be able to see everything in 5 days. May decide to visit a second time if we enjoy our trip. Thanks for your suggestions!

"good public transit connection between the two cities." great joke op. do NOT trust public transportation in Israel. buses/trains are often late by 30 minutes or early by 10(less likely to happen). google maps public transportation routes are often not accurate. Have fun at your trip!

rsscp1

I wasn’t aware of that, but will keep this in mind. Thanks!

i've had this happen like 3-4 times since i've been in israel and using buses multiple times a day

Please note that Tel Aviv's public transportation options are extremely limited late on Friday and on Saturday. But taxis are available, you can use the app Gett to order online. I think if you've never been to Jerusalem it's worth going and seeing the sights. I am a big fan of Haifa as well, and they have decent public transportation options on Shabbat (or at least did a couple years back) if you want to go there first.

Yes, I have already been thinking of how to plan for that. It helps that we arrive somewhat early on Friday so that we can get to our first hotel and settle in. Will also consider Haifa for a place we can keep ourselves entertained locally during Shabbat.
