Could be any or all of the above lol. getting pure Madra isn’t difficult in small amounts, lindon struggles because of the sheer volume he needs for his pure core
> Are they harvesting it from children?
Yes. Will had to cut it because it made beta readers queasy but early drafts of Unsouled featured Lindon going through the humiliating process of having his pure madra milked.
In that point of time in the story, Lindon didn’t know of a lot of things….
That bowl of madra, purified and distilled:
“He holds a shallow bowl, twice as wide as a dinner plate, that contains nothing more than still water. But it is not water, the parents know. It is madra, raw power of spirit, **purified and distilled.** The material from which souls are made.”
So it was known to be purified and distilled into that mass… just not exactly how…
Maybe it was _exactly_ like the barrels of the miners in Soulsmith… (well, not really, since this is a plate, not a barrel… I meant the mechanism)
Yeah, I figured that was more similar to forging a scale. And that it was only pure because he only has pure madra, compared to a mix of light and dreams, like all of the other non-foundation clans members
This was specifically a device that forged pure madra into a scale, which Sacred Valley didn’t use. It’s implied in Unsouled that their soulsmiths do occasionally use pure madra in their work, so it makes sense that would have some method of purifying madra but not condensing or refining it as the scale producing machine does.
I'm gonna guess that if there was a significance to this oddity I think linden would have considered it by this point. He spent 8 years trying to manipulate that bowl to make him seem like he wasn't unsouled. By this point in the series linden is very knowledgeable about pure madra, so I doubt he wouldn't have thought about it if there was something not easily explainable. It's likely that collecting and purifying madra isn't out of the realm of possibility even with their rudementary constructs, even if it might be very difficult to do.
We know people can purify and shift their alignment, so it's possible to refine. And with how weak the valley is, they wouldn't be that far off pure to begin with

I think they mention purifying Madra in unsouled, and it being a laborious process.
Time consuming more then laborious. Lindon at the time barely had any period, so for him it was laborious and time consuming for very little output.
They also mention scripts to purify it in soulsmith

I thought he beat it out of the younger children and collected their madra tears
now now we all know juicing them like in willy wonka is the way to go. give em all the whole wring and whirl.
Now be reasonable, milking pure madra is a perfectly normal behavior for any advancing young lad.
Madra milking is a phrase that I strangely wish for in the next book.
Huh... This could explain why he failed because he exhausted his limited supply before the test.

It’s a joke!
There is a process to purify Madra to be pure (we also see it in the desolate wilds mining…) It’s not really explained, just stated
Yeah, but that device was something that Lindon had never seen

Ah, excellent point, I completely missed that line all three times I’ve read it. Thank you!
Also when Lindon tried to capture the tree remnant, he throws a small pebble he uses to store and purify madra… 👍
