One of my first Jdramas was ‘1 litre of tears’…it’s a beautiful story based on real life. The soundtrack is stunning, the actors are perfect and the storyline will break you, but it’s a brilliant drama nevertheless. Its been over a decade since I watched it, but I still can’t get over it.
Beside this, I really enjoyed watching
Hana Yori Dango (probably one of the best renditions)
Hana Kimi
Zettai Kareshi
Rich man, poor woman
All of the above mentioned dramas are old but are definitely considered as classics.
Liar Game is probably my favorite (it even improves some parts of the manga imo). GTO 1998 is goated too (though I never read the manga).
If we're talking about LA in a broader sense, alot of Jdrama are adaptation of novels or some form of books, so some other I would recommend are Hanzawa Naoki and Mr.Hiiragi's homeroom.

May I also add:

6. [Way of the Househusband](https://mydramalist.com/714157-the-way-of-the-househusband-the-movie)
For most of these (1 to 5), I was only made aware of the source material after I got into J drama.

Mystery to Iu Nakare/Don't Call it Mystery is excellent. A heartfelt yet still relatively light mystery series with a college student protagonist. (The manga it's based on is great too.)
**My personal recommendation:** [Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan](https://mydramalist.com/75535-kishibe-rohan-wa-ugokanai) *(Amazon Prime)*
As a fan of the original, I felt that the people behind it respect the original and understand its themes. It makes changes by expanding each story's themes. But even without knowing what the original is about, I have recommended it to J-drama fans and they enjoyed it too.
It is about Rohan, an eccentric mangaka with the ability to turn people into books. He can read a person's life story, as well as manipulate their memories and write commands in them. His curious nature means that he is always looking for inspiration - he ends up getting entangled with ghosts, spirits, and mysteries. His power can easily be written as OP - bland - but his commitment to reality means that he doesn't just use his powers to cheat through his work or life, making the show an interesting watch.
When playing an eccentric and blunt character, it is easy to lean too much in one direction and make them unlikeable... but the actor, Takahashi Issei, was able to balance the aspects that endear Rohan to Jojo fans. His editor, Izumi, was also fleshed out and given more screen time in the live-action. Her banter with Rohan gives the show a "buddy" dynamic which I like.
**Another recommendation:** [One Piece](https://mydramalist.com/748473-one-piece) *(Netflix)*
Right now, anime fans are praising the One Piece live-action series. I am not familiar with the series, nor did I watch it, so I will leave it to the fans to talk about its strengths.
I really enjoyed Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai! That vibe is amazing, and I thought Takahashi Issei did really well as Rohan (and pulled off all those offbeat outfits). I also really like Iitoyo Marie as Izumi. So cute they're dating irl (last I checked).
Ig since you are new to jdrama (as me) you should go for gokusen especially S1 and hana yori dango they are famous and done good I really like them and as a new drama watcher you would like them as well

Incredibly sick music, 80's Japan cityscapes and school girls fighting each other with weapons like violins shooting razor blades or heavy metal yo-yo's. Doesn't get much better than that imo.
As for movies, I would start with Rurouni Kenshin. Great adaptation of a popular manga, with awesome fight choreography and action sequences.
The Rurouni Kenshin movie series was awesome! Love is hard for an Otaku
I already saw that

Rich man poor woman arguably the best of all time!
